Researcher Job Opening: Enabling Connected Learning, Data & Society
by danah boyd 17 Nov '14

17 Nov '14

JOB OPENING: RESEARCHER, ENABLING CONNECTED LEARNING The Data & Society Research Institute is looking to hire a researcher who can help design and execute a research agenda to enable connected learning. Full job description available here: http://www.datasociety.net/jobs/2014/11/researcher-enabling-connected-learn… Data & Society is a New York City-based research institute dedicated to addressing social, technical, ethical, legal, and policy issues that are emerging because of data-centric technological development. D&S brings together researchers, entrepreneurs, activists, policy creators, journalists, geeks, and public intellectuals to gather, debate, and engage one another on the key issues introduced by the increasing availability of data in society. The Enabling Connected Learning Initiative Enabling Connected Learning is a new Data & Society initiative, spearheaded by our founder, danah boyd, and supported through a grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The goal of the project is to better understand the relationship between U.S. governmental policy, technology development, and innovative learning and education initiatives. This project recognizes the importance and goals of connected learning an educational approach designed to leverage technology and learner-driven interests to enable learning. This project is also seeking to enable the cities of learning movement in order to create bridges between different learning environments, all with the learner at the center. Federal and state policies focused on children, education, and technology shape what learning initiatives are possible. Privacy, safety, and security all shape the trustworthiness of different digital platforms and learning ecosystems, even as data can be used to enable new forms of learning and new opportunities for advancing education. While these issues are publicly debated and politically fraught, research to ground these conversations is limited. The goal of this project is to better understand exactly how existing and proposed policies affect connected learning initiatives. Job Description We are seeking either a full-time or part-time researcher to help drive the research components of this project. Start date is negotiable and the appointment is for two years (with renewal possibilities). Applicants should have a PhD in a social science or related field or significant experience doing similar types of research. Applicants may be postdocs or more advanced researchers. This is a fully funded position with benefits and vacation; salary is dependent on experience. The appointment requires residency in New York. Travel may be necessary, both for conducting the research and for disseminating findings. This project will involve qualitative interviewing and may also involve content analysis, policy analysis, and survey work depending on the questions that emerge from the initial research. The researcher would work as a part of a research team, collaborating with danah and with other research assistants and researchers. Core findings from the work will be published through white papers and in public-facing venues but researchers are also encouraged to publish scholarly contributions in peer-reviewed venues. This position is ideal for a qualitative researcher who is seeking to do impact-oriented research at the intersection of education and learning, policy, and technology; to be a part of a research team; and to be situated in a community of researchers all looking to understand the intersection of technology and society. While researchers are also encouraged to pursue their own research agenda during this appointment, executing this project must take priority. Qualifications • PhD in social science or related field, or equivalent research experience • Exceptional written and oral communication skills • Demonstrated interest and knowledge in qualitative methodology and some combination of education/learning, technology, and policy • Curious and collaborative self-starter who can help drive a project forward (usually involves herding cats) • Knowledge of some combination of: education/technology policy, education technologies, digital media & learning initiatives, and/or education practices is a plus APPLICATION PROCESS To apply, please send an email to danah boyd at learning-job(a)datasociety.net with the subject “Connected Learning Application” and include the following attachments: • One-page, single-spaced personal statement, including a description of research experience, interests, and professional goals • CV or resume • Writing sample (preferably a journal article or equivalent research document) • Links to online presence (e.g., blog, homepage, Twitter, journalistic endeavors, etc.) • The names and email addresses of two recommenders • A cover letter that includes citizenship/legal residency status, current city of residence, available start date, and any other practical consideration that may be important for us to know We will begin reviewing applications immediately and will continue to do so until we find the right researcher. Please contact us should you have any questions about the position. Questions about the opportunity or process will not reflect negatively on your application. The work and well-being of the Data & Society Research Institute is strengthened by the diversity of our network and our differences in background, culture, experience, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, and much more. We welcome applications from people of color, women, the LGBTQIA community, and persons with disabilities.

Statistical software and Internet data gathering
by Peter Timusk 17 Nov '14

17 Nov '14

Using an Application Programming Interface (API) call to twitter by registering a twitter application I was able to gather data from twitter. I prefer statistical software like SAS or R and both of these can make http requests built into some code and then import the JSON web data file. I would recommend learning this programming yourself as it does not take a deep knowledge of programming and gives one fairly fine grained control on data gathering and is much cheaper than using a canned application. R software is free here www.r-project.org Many publishing mathematical statisticians are using R and are publishing new R routines these days. The other approach is to teach computer scientists social science I guess. I think they would be using python computer language these days. Peter Timusk This is my own opinion and I do not speak for my employer or associations I am a member of or volunteer with including charities and political parties unless otherwise noted.

New books: Digital Rebellion and Low Power to the People
by christina dunbar-hester 16 Nov '14

16 Nov '14

(with apologies for x-posting) Announcing two new books of potential interest to people on this list: *Digital Rebellion: The Birth of the Cyber Left* (History of Communication Series, University of Illinois Press), by Todd Wolfson *Digital Rebellion *examines the impact of new media and communication technologies on the spatial, strategic, and organizational fabric of social movements. Todd Wolfson begins with the rise of the Zapatistas in the mid-1990s, and how aspects of the movement--network organizational structure, participatory democratic governance, and the use of communication tools as a binding agent--became essential parts of Indymedia and all Cyber Left organizations. From there he uses oral interviews and other rich ethnographic data to chart the media-based think tanks and experiments that continued the Cyber Left's evolution through the Independent Media Center's birth around the 1999 WTO protests in Seattle. As Wolfson shows, understanding the intersection of Indymedia and the Global Social Justice Movement illuminates their foundational role in the Occupy struggle, Arab Spring uprising, and the other emergent movements that have in recent years re-energized radical politics. Over the next decade, several hundred of these newly created low-wattage stations took to the airwaves. In *Low Power to the People*, Christina Dunbar-Hester describes the practices of an activist organization focused on LPFM during this era. Despite its origins as a pirate broadcasting collective, the group eventually shifted toward building and expanding regulatory access to new, licensed stations. These radio activists consciously cast radio as an alternative to digital utopianism, promoting an understanding of electronic media that emphasizes the local community rather than a global audience of Internet users. Dunbar-Hester focuses on how these radio activists imputed emancipatory politics to the “old” medium of radio technology by promoting the idea that “microradio” broadcasting holds the potential to empower ordinary people at the local community level. The group’s methods combine political advocacy with a rare commitment to hands-on technical work with radio hardware. The book follows the ways in which activists’ hands-on, inclusive ethos was hampered by persistent issues of race, class, and gender. Projecting utopian politics onto technology resulted in unanticipated challenges. Dunbar-Hester’s study of activism around an “old” medium offers broader lessons about how political beliefs are expressed through engagement with specific technologies. It also offers insight into contemporary issues in media policy as the FCC begins issuing a new round of LPFM licenses in 2014. SBP Grand Data Challenge 2015
by Kang Zhao 15 Nov '14

15 Nov '14

The Grand Data Challenge of the 2015 International Conference on Social Computing, Behavioral Modeling & Prediction Overview This year's SBP Grand Challenge problem asks participants to consider the following question, "how can we use publicly available data on the web and elsewhere to find social inequality and to aid the disadvantaged?" From the Arab Spring to the recent Gamergate scandal, the use of social media in understanding and mitigating social inequalities and prejudice has increased at a rapid pace. At the same time, data used for decades to study the ways in which social inequalities permeate every facet of social structure have become increasingly accessible. While many have taken advantage of these resources to produce new and interesting approaches to understanding social inequalities and ways to prevent them, there is much interesting and useful work still to be done. For example, the following questions may be of interest: How are stereotypes of disadvantaged individuals perpetuated in social media? How do differing levels of Internet access affect the presence and attitude of individuals online? How has the distribution of poverty changed over time as American cities have grown, and how has this affected the impoverished population in a negative or positive way? These are by no means the only questions of interest, and are only intended to give a rough idea of what might be an interesting topic to explore for this challenge problem. Submission All submissions must be in the form of a 4-6 page single column paper with a minimum font size of 10. Note that only the abstract will be included in the proceedings, and thus should not conflict with any concurrent or future submissions of this work to other venues. Submissions will be judged by a based on their novelty, adherence to relevant social science literature, and technical rigor. All submissions must be made to our submission site, https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=sbpgdc2015 Important Dates Paper Submission January 20th, 2015 Winner Notification February 28th, 2015 SBP 2015 Conference March 31st – April 3rd, 2015 Prizes To Be Determined Last year, the winner received a cash prize as well as a travel reimbursement to present their work at the conference. This year will likely be much the same. We will update this portion when the prizes have been finalized. Example Datasets We have provided some sample datasets to get contestants started on their submissions. These datasets are merely intended to provide a starting point, and are not required for the submission. Contestants are encouraged to provide their own datasets for the community. All of the datasets that follow are available on the SBP Grand Challenge website (http://sbp-conference.org/challenge/) Ferguson Protests - Tweets pertaining to 2014 protest activity in Ferguson, Missouri. Contains 1.1M Tweets 7-14 days after the first protests. We'll have Tweet IDs up for this dataset within two weeks. Census Data - The US Census department provides an API (http://www.census.gov/developers/) to quickly access large volumes of census data. Gamergate - Tweets pertaining to the Gamergate scandal collected by Andy Baio for his article about the incident (http://bit.ly/medium-gamergate) Social Computing Repository - Contains data from a collection of social media sites including Digg, Foursquare, and Twitter. 1st Call for Papers: HWID2015 working conference on “Interaction Design for Pervasive and Smart Workplaces” (IFIP TC13.6 WG)
by Jose Abdelnour-Nocera 14 Nov '14

14 Nov '14

1st Call for Papers: HWID2015 working conference on “Interaction Design for Pervasive and Smart Workplaces” uwl.ac.uk/hwid2015<http://uwl.ac.uk/hwid2015> Venue: University of West London, Brentford Site, Boston Manor Road, TW8 9GA ,United Kingdom Wednesday and Thursday, 25th – 26th of June 2015<x-apple-data-detectors://1>, in London, United Kingdom Deadline for submissions: 1st of February 2015<x-apple-data-detectors://2>. ========================================================= Theme, Scope and Focus: The HUMAN WORK INTERACTION DESIGN 2015 (HWID 2015) working conference focuses on the integration of work analysis and interaction design methods for pervasive and smart workplaces. Pervasive and smart technologies have pushed work-place configuration beyond linear logic and physical boundaries. As a result, workers’ experience of and access to technology is increasingly pervasive, and their agency constantly reconfigured. While this in certain areas of work is not new (e.g., technology mediation and decision support in air traffic control), more recent developments in other domains such as healthcare (e.g., Augmented Reality in Computer Aided Surgery) have raised challenging issues for HCI researchers and practitioners. The question now is: how to improve the quality of workers’ experience and outputs? This working conference focuses on answering this question to support professionals, academia, national labs, and industry engaged in human work analysis and interaction design for the workplace. Conversely, tools, procedures, and professional competences for designing human-centered technologies for pervasive and smart workplaces will be discussed. We are looking for submissions that provide the HCI field with sound tools, procedures, and professional competencies for designing human-centered technologies for pervasive and smart workplaces. Submissions will include, but are not limited to, one or more of the following topics: - Learning from participants’ experiences in different work domains when applying work analysis to support the interaction design of pervasive and smart workplaces; - Exploring how work analysis and interaction design have evolved, have to evolve, and can be made to co-evolve in order to support workers in pervasive and smart workplaces; - Identify novel ideas, principles, and techniques for how interaction design for pervasive and smart workplaces can ensure high quality usability and user experience for workers; - Addressing the sociotechnical gap in work analysis and interaction design, specifically the little understood gap between social requirements and technical designs. - Designing simple interactions for complex work domains. How humans can manage the workers’ user experiences in pervasive and smart workplaces. These include enterprise, scientific and safety critical systems as well as fields such as digital archeology / heritage computing Submission guidelines: We invite two types of papers: • Full research papers (10 pages) • Industry – case studies & work in progress (4 pages) For submissions to the working conference, the authors must use the LNCS templates and style files available in http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-7-72376-0 . All papers should be in the working conference publication format be submitted by 1st of February 2015<x-apple-data-detectors://4> via https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=hwid2015 . An IFIP Springer copyright form must be filled in for each paper. They can be downloaded from http://www.springer.com/series/6102 . Acceptance notification for conference papers: Notification of acceptance will be provided by 1st April 2015<x-apple-data-detectors://7>. All accepted papers will be published in the working conference proceedings in the form of an electronic copy with ISBN and made available to the participants. Selection of Papers for IFIP Springer Book: During the review process, the reviewers are asked to evaluate (also among papers from industry and students) whether the paper is suitable for an IFIP Springer book. We aim at most accepted full research papers to be included here, but also the possibility to have a very interesting perspective from industry or similar represented. This IFIP Springer book will be available after the conference. In addition, four to five papers will be selected for further development for a special issue in the International Journal of Socio-technology and Knowledge Development. Conference Chairs: José Abdelnour Nocera, Associate Professor, University of West London, United Kingdom Pedro Campos, Assistant Professor, University of Madeira, Portugal Organising Committee Torkil Clemmensen, Associate Professor, Department of IT Management, CBS, Denmark, Denmark Dinesh Katre, Associate Director & HOD, Human-Centred Design & Computing, Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune, India Arminda Lopes, Instituto Politécnico de Castelo Branco, Portugal Effie Law, Reader, University of Leicester, United Kingdom Barbara Rita Barricelli, Research fellow, Università degli Studi di Milano, Italy About the conference: The Human Work interaction Design (HWID) working conference is organized by IFIP TC 13.6 working group, see http://hwid.cbs.dk/. The 1st HWID conference was organized at Madeira, Portugal in 2006 (Clemmensen, Campos, Orngreen, Pejtersen, & Wong, 2006). The 2nd HWID conference took place at Pune, India in 2009 (Katre, Orngreen, Yammiyavar, & Clemmensen, 2010). The 3rd HWID conference was held at Copenhagen, Denmark in 2012 (Clemmensen, Abdelnour-Nocera, Campos, Katre, Lopes, Pejtersen, & Orngreen 2012).
