About the book: The Occupy movement has emerged in a historical crisis of global capitalism. It struggles for the reappropriation of the commodified commons. Communications are part of the commons of society. In this work, Christian Fuchs analyses the contradictory dialectic of social media in the Occupy movement. Drawing on a political economy framework and interpretation of the results of the OccupyMedia! Survey, in which more than 400 Occupy activists reported on their social media use, OccupyMedia! The Occupy Movement and Social Media in Crisis Capitalism shows how activists confront the contradictions of capitalism and communication in the age of crisis and social media. The book discusses the contradiction between commercial and alternative social media and argues that the existence of a surveillance-industrial complex expressed in the PRISM system shows the urgent necessity to create social media beyond Facebook and Google. Transparency is important in a variety of ways, and disputes about transparency and secrecy permeate much of our public discourse. This year’s meeting of the IER seeks papers from a variety of perspectives and disciplines addressing questions about transparency and secrecy, for example: - - What is transparency? What does it mean for something to be kept secret or made transparent? - - What justifies transparency in different domains? - - When is transparency bad, or unjustifiable? When is secrecy good, or justifiable? - - Lots of organizations seek to make government and corporate actions transparent (e.g., fact-checking organizations, open records advocacy organizations, market watchdog groups). Do they succeed? What criteria should we use to determine whether they succeed? Do they introduce other questions of information flow? - - What policies in scientific research and publishing, in journalism, in government, and in commerce best promote transparency? - - Is secret law really law? - - Is it possible to maintain and build trust within a climate of secrecy? Members of the Learning, Education and Games (LEG) special interest group (SIG) of the IGDA <http://www.igda.org/> (International Game Developers Association) have written, reviewed, and edited this new book series. The first volume explores the latest research and practices in designing games for a variety of curricular needs–-including STEM, literacy learning, history education, and computational, ethical, and critical thinking. The book also delves into design issues–-such as aligning goals, designing for an audience, *playtesting*, and assessment. Candidates should demonstrate strong potential to be leading scholars and effective teachers whose research interrogates the relationship between big data, surveillance, privacy and/or ethics. Ideal candidates may be working in a variety of areas, such as, but not limited to: algorithmic culture, cyber-security, data mining and scraping, analytics, digital archiving, cultures of mobility, sousveillance practices, user generated content, and spatial and locative media. We welcome applications from candidates exploring critical, ethically inflected questions about big data from a political economy, policy or cultural studies and humanities perspective. Candidates who are committed to making policy and regulatory interventions in the Canadian and/or international contexts are particularly desirable, as are those who are working with civil society organizations.
