#ELD15 Opens Call for Proposals
by AJ Kelton 28 Oct '14

28 Oct '14

The 2015 Emerging Learning Design Conference (ELD15) is accepting proposals for its 5th annual conference, to be held May 29th 2015 on the campus of Montclair State University. *INITIAL PROPOSAL DEADLINE – NOVEMBER 21st, 2015. See below for details.* - For the Call for Proposals Submission Form – click HERE <https://msusurveys.montclair.edu/index.php/771656/lang-en> - For the ELD15 Session Types – click HERE <http://eld.montclair.edu/eld-call-for-proposals/session-types/> - For the Call for Proposals FAQ – click HERE <http://eld.montclair.edu/eld-call-for-proposals/eld-call-for-proposals-faq/> *ROLLING SUBMISSION / EARLY ACCEPTANCE MODEL* The theme for this year's conference is *CONNECT, CONSTRUCT, CREATE: ENGAGING APPROACHES TO TEACHING AND LEARNING* ELD uses a “rolling submission” model for proposals: every proposal will be reviewed and given feedback within 2 weeks of submission. Your submission will either be accepted or you’ll be provided feedback from our reviewers and offered an opportunity to revise and resubmit. We’ll continue this process of accepting or giving constructive feedback to proposals until all presentation slots are filled or we reach our INITIAL PROPOSAL DEADLINE of November 21st, 2014. Submissions will still be accepted after November 21st, but they will be considered in the second round of proposals. We will work with those who submitted by the EARLY ACCEPTANCE DEADLINE and then look toward later submissions to complete the program, should presentation slots still be available. Why this model? Two main reasons: we've seen that having revise-and-resubmit cycles make our conference’s presentations the best they can be for our attendees, and accepting excellent proposals as they arrive is a great way to let our prospective audience know what to look forward to even before the whole program is finalized. In addition, this model is easier on our reviewers as we don’t get a rush of proposals on deadline day. How do you submit a proposal? Go here <http://eld.montclair.edu/eld-call-for-proposals-faq/> to read some brief instructions on what we need in your submission, and then go to URL and supply that information. We’ll be in touch to confirm your submission was complete, and then let you know within a couple weeks the response from our reviewers. Accepted conference presentations have the potential to be included as proceedings in the Journal of Emerging Learning Design <http://eldj.montclair.edu/>. -- ----- AJ Kelton Director of Emerging & Instructional Technology College of Humanities and Social Sciences - Montclair State University Doctoral Candidate Educational Communication and Technology - New York University ---------- Emerging Learning Design 2015 http://eld.montclair.edu Twitter: @ELDConf <http://twitter.com/ELDConf> ---------- http://www.ajkelton.net Twitter: @aj_kelton <http://twitter.com/aj_kelton>

CFP - Art Matters International Conference 1024 **Last Call!**
by Lara Portolés 27 Oct '14

27 Oct '14

Dear colleagues, ****The Call for Papers for the ART MATTERS INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE 2014 ( http://artmattersconference.com/) will close next Friday, 31st October**** ART MATTERS INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE 2014 will take place in Barcelona on December 11-12, 2014. It is hosted by the University of Barcelona, the Open University of Catalonia and Hangar, Centre for art research and production. **Verisión en español and versió en català here: http://artmattersconference.com/** =================================================================== The materials and technologies of the contemporary art invite us to reconsider, not only the role that these play in the articulation of artistic practices, but also the theoretical frameworks that demonstrate the role of the materiality itself inside the Art History. These premises involve new methodological challenges and important epistemological transformations in the examination of art; challenges that must be analysed, discussed and contrasted with the long and fertile tradition of art studies. Fundamental problems such as the distribution of the agencies involved in the investigation and the artistic practice, the lines of temporal causality, the interconnection between materialities and discoursivities, the role of the technology and the society, the spatiality and location of the art, gain relevance from the suggested challenges. Art Matters International Conference 2014 hopes to give space for those researches that, coming from the academy and the professional practice, rebuild the relation between art and its materiality: contributions focused on theoretical, methodological and epistemological reconsiderations and, specially, empirical studies centered on art routines and infrastructures. Perspectives such as Media Archaeology, the Actor-Network Theory or the New Materialisms contribute decisively to the possibility of blurring or even erasing preconceived ontological distinctions –inoperative today-, and traditionally supported by the framework of our modernity. We are alluding to established dichotomies such as subject/object, matter/discourse, theory/practice, social/technological, expert/non-expert that lay out important onto-epistemic challenges to overcome. The interest of the congress is precisely to connect these new perspectives with the tradition of history, theory and art practice, starting always from both the reflection and the experience with the routines, the infrastructures and the art fields. TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION: (A) Researches about art infrastructures: museums, art galleries, centers of production and investigation, archives, exhibition and distribution displays, art market dynamics. (B) Investigations about objects and artistic practices: new materials, technologies inside the art field, production processes, distribution, conservation and preservation of the art and the media, etc. (C) Other art histories and narratives: “minor” or divergent histories, non linear narratives, emergency of novelties, relational temporality and spatiality, forgotten geographical areas, etc. (D) Onto-epistemic and methodological art frameworks: human and non-human agency, relations between practice and theory, experts and non-experts, trans/inter/meta/non-disciplinarity, etc. ============================== ================================= Those people interested in participating are invited to send, before 31st of October, 2014 (included) a communication proposal to artmattersconference(a)gmail.com for its following evaluation. PROPOSAL FORMAT (TWO SEPARATED DOCUMENTS) ***Communication proposal*** Format .doc, .docx, .rtf, .odt Languages: English, Spanish and Catalan Communication title Communication abstract (300 words maximum) Between 3 and 5 keywords. ***Information about the author/authors*** Format .doc, .docx, .rtf, .odt Languages: English, Spanish and Catalan Name and surname Institutional affiliation (in case of having it) Email address Brief curriculum (100 words maximum) Information and contact person (only if the communication is presented by more than one author) Communication title Notification of the communication acceptance will be published on 10th November, 2014. Each paper will have 15 minutes, plus a question and answer time. ================================================================ PUBLICATION Some of the papers presented at ART MATTERS INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE 2014 will be published in a special issue of Artnodes - Journal of Art Science and Technology (http://journals.uoc.edu/index.php/artnodes/) These papers will follow the author guidelines, submission procedure and peer-review process of the journal. ================================================================= FURTHER INFORMATION: http://artmattersconference.com/ You can also send an email to: artmattersconference(a)gmail.com ================================================================= Help us disseminate! Hi Nina, There was just a presentation on social media narratives at #IR15, by Linda Kronman. I happened to bambuser it (with Linda's permission) so you can watch the video here: http://bambuser.com/v/5015944 and the abstract is here https://www.conftool.com/aoir-ir15/index.php?page=browseSessions&form_sessi… The ELMCIP Electronic Literature Knowledge Base is a great resource for finding creative works and scholarship on this sort of work. I added Linda Kronman's talk to the database and in the entry you'll also see links to the entries for the social media fiction she discussed: http://elmcip.net/critical-writing/can-transmedia-storytelling-learn-hypert… You'll find lots more in the ELMCIP Knowledge Base. Social media fiction has many different names. Try searching for things like netprov, twitter fiction, email narratives, transmedia - or follow the tags from each work. Most entries have links to the full text, the website, a PDF or video or other documentation. Some examples of creative works and scholarship - you'll find links to critical writing about each of the creative works and links to creative works and scholarship cited by the critical writing if you follow the link to the database. You can also try clicking on the tags for each work to find others that are similar. The database is ALWAYS in progress and is created by volunteers like you and me, so you'd also be very welcome to sign up as a contributor if you'd like to add more! Many social media fictions disappear once they're performed, so you may have to just look at documentation. Contents of Vol. 12, No. 3 of International Journal of Distance Education Technologies (IJDET, an EI journal)
by Maiga Chang 26 Oct '14

26 Oct '14

[Apologies if you receive multiple times, please circulate this to your colleagues who might be interested, thank you so much.] [This email includes the table of contents of Vol. 12, No. 3 of International Journal of Distance Education Technologies (IJDET, an EI journal) and the general call for papers of IJDET] ------- Annoucement of the publication of Vol. 12, No. 3 of IJDET (an EI journal)----------- http://www.igi-global.com/journal/international-journal-distance-education-… We are glad to announce the publication of Vol. 12, No. 3 of International Journal of Distance Education Technologies (IJDET, an EI journal). In this issue, SIX papers are included: Implementation of Web-Based Distance Education in Nursing Education in Turkey: A Sample Lesson in Patient Education (pages 1-13) Emine Senyuva, Gulsun Tasocak The research was carried out in 2005-2006 as a descriptive and methodological study. It aimed to obtain students' feedback and to serve as a source for future relevant studies. The setting of the study was Istanbul University Florence Nightingale Nursing College and at Istanbul University Bakirkoy Health College. The sample of the study included 167 students who voluntarily consented to participate in the study. The sample was taken from the population of all students continuing their education at the two study universities. Data were collected utilizing the “Information Form 1” and the “Information Form 2” The students' general mean and standard deviation values on Information Form 2 were (117.02±8.04), and when the arithmetic mean and standard deviation values relating to the sections were examined, the results were as follows: Views about the Design of the patient education course (65.19±3.33), Views about the patient education course (24.71±2.57), Views about web-based distance learning after education (27.19±3.86). These were considered to be satisfactory findings indicating that the students had positive views about the web-based patient education course in general. The opinion of the students about the “Patient Education” lesson was generally positive. There was a significant difference with respect to the scores on the questionnaire between the students with, and students without, the ability of learning by themselves, the scores being higher in the former (p<0.05). http://www.igi-global.com/article/implementation-of-web-based-distance-educ… Problematic but Possible: Online Teaching and Learning in Post-registration Programmes (pages 14-21) Maria Cassar, Josef Trapani This artifact identifies the main challenges experienced by the authors, both nurse educators, in the delivery of a module on evidence based practice exclusively through the use of an e-learning platform. The module has been running for the past four years as part of an entirely online post registration programme for qualified health professionals seeking a baccalaureate qualification, and makes use of asynchronous online discussions coupled with traditional written assignments as assessment methods. The authors' efforts to address the identified challenges are discussed, in view of flagging the measures which may need to be put in place by educators embarking on similar teaching initiatives. http://www.igi-global.com/article/problematic-but-possible/117179 The A-Framework: The Role of Access, Attributes, and Affordance in the Adoption of Distance Education Technology for Lifestyle Change (pages 22-40) Patrick J. Tierney, Susan Moisey This exploratory mixed methods case study examined the use of distance education technology for lifestyle change within the context of obesity treatment and weight management. In the quantitative phase of the study, 19 adults involved in an obesity-related lifestyle change program or change process completed a questionnaire that determined their attitude toward technology adoption, access to various types of information and communication technology and level of connectivity, and the extent to which they used technologies in their daily lives. The qualitative phase consisted of semi-structured interviews with individuals who were currently or had been obese and involved in a weight management program. The participants were provided access to a website which contained a set of online tools and resources believed to assist with weight loss and lifestyle change. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to obtain each participant's perceptions of, and reactions to, the various tools and resources. The A-Framework was developed as a direct result of this study. http://www.igi-global.com/article/the-a-framework/117180 The Influence of Self-Efficacies on Readers' Intention to Use E-Reading Devices: An Empirical Study (pages 41-61) Bor-Yuan Tsai, Jung-Nan Yen E-books and e-Reading Devices (E-RDs) markets have been enlarged due to the rapid progress of digital technologies. What are the possible factors to increase readers' willingness to use electronic devices? To improve the predictive value of the original TAM model, this study incorporates three additional constructs to form e-Reading Device Acceptance Mode: reading self-efficacy, computer self-efficacy and perceived enjoyment. This model consists of six constructs and 11 research hypotheses. The research questionnaires were distributed in Taiwan, and the research results showed that reading self-efficacy shows positive influences on readers' intention to use the E-RDs. On the contrary, computer self-efficacy does not show positive influences on perceived usefulness or perceived enjoyment. Moreover, the perceived ease of use of E-RDs does not show significant impacts on readers' intention to use the devices. Explanations of the causes and reasons are given in this paper, and the finding of this research may provide useful references and materials for e-book publishers, e-reading device developers, and researchers for further studies. http://www.igi-global.com/article/the-influence-of-self-efficacies-on-reade… E-book Usability in Educational Technology Classes: Teachers and Teacher Candidates' Perception toward E-book for Teaching and Learning (pages 62-74) Sunghee Shin This study was designed to enrich the learning experiences of in-service and pre-service teachers in two educational technology classes by adopting e-books as the course material. Graduate students were more positive about their e-book reading experience than undergraduate students, but, surprisingly, more undergraduates (63.6%) became interested in checking out e-book readers from the school library than graduate students (51.9%). Over three-quarters of undergraduates (78.6%) responded positively about the use of e-book readers by the end of the study. Despite their appreciation of e-book features, more than half of both undergraduate and graduate students preferred print books but were willing to use e-books and e-book readers for their readings. Shortcomings of e-books were eye-strain and the limitation of e-book collections. http://www.igi-global.com/article/e-book-usability-in-educational-technolog… Utilizing Twitter and #Hashtags Toward Enhancing Student Learning in an Online Course Environment (pages 75-83) T. Scott Bledsoe, Dave Harmeyer, Shuang Frances Wu The authors offer an answer to the research question, To what extent and in what ways is Twitter helpful to student learning when group hashtags are created and used in collaborative educational environments? Sixty-two students in a spring 2012 graduate online Research Methodology course worked individually and in groups to create discussions on topics of interest through Twitter posts and student-created hashtags. Student participants answered nine qualitative and quantitative questions concerning the Twitter/hashtag exercise and used collaborative blog pages to reflect on their experiences. A grounded theory approach was applied to classify data generated from the nine questions and blog postings. An analysis of the study's data resulted in the discovery of the following four themes: access to information, communication, class engagement, and general feedback. Based on these themes, nine recommendations are offered for maximizing the use of Twitter in an online environment for increased student engagement and learning. http://www.igi-global.com/article/utilizing-twitter-and-hashtags-toward-enh… ------- General Call for Papers for IJDET (an EI journal)----------- The electronic version of this cfp can be seen at http://maiga.athabascau.ca/editors/IJDET-Call_for_Papers-General.pdf International Journal of Distance Education Technologies (IJDET) (http://www.igi-global.com/journal/international-journal-distance-education-…) The International Journal of Distance Education Technologies (IJDET) is a forum for researchers and practitioners to disseminate practical solutions to the automation of open and distance learning.
