Book on activist DDoS actions launching this week!
by Molly Sauter 17 Oct '14

17 Oct '14

My new book on the activist use of distributed denial of service actions is launching this week. Check it out on Amazon <http://www.amazon.com/The-Coming-Swarm-Hacktivism-Disobedience/dp/162356456…> or contact Bloomsbury for an examination copy <http://www.bloomsbury.com/us/the-coming-swarm-9781623564568/>. And if you'll be in New York, Boston, Toronto, or Montreal in the next six weeks, come to one of the awesome book events <http://oddletters.com/2014/10/16/the-coming-swarm-book-tour/> we have scheduled. In *The Coming Swarm*, Molly Sauter examines the history, development, theory, and practice of distributed denial of service actions as a tactic of political activism. The internet is a vital arena of communication, self expression, and interpersonal organizing. When there is a message to convey, words to get out, or people to unify, many will turn to the internet as a theater for that activity. As familiar and widely accepted activist tools-petitions, fundraisers, mass letter-writing, call-in campaigns and others-find equivalent practices in the online space, is there also room for the tactics of disruption and civil disobedience that are equally familiar from the realm of street marches, occupations, and sit-ins? With a historically grounded analysis, and a focus on early deployments of activist DDOS as well as modern instances to trace its development over time, *The Coming Swarm* uses activist DDOS actions as the foundation of a larger analysis of the practice of disruptive civil disobedience on the internet. -- oddletters http://oddletters.com/ author of *The Coming Swarm: DDoS Actions, Hacktivism, and Civil Disobedience on the Internet <http://www.amazon.com/The-Coming-Swarm-Hacktivism-Disobedience/dp/162356456…>*

Fwd: CFP: Bilingual Conference "History of Gender in Games"
by Mia Consalvo 17 Oct '14

17 Oct '14

FYI.. please circulate widely: *Call for Papers* Game History Annual Symposium: 2015 Edition *History of Gender in Games * Bilingual Conference (French/English) June 26-27, Grande Bibliothèque (Montreal, Canada) Website : www.sahj.ca Since the beginning of the 1990s, many scholars have shown concern for the plethora of gender stereotypes and sexist narratives in video games, as well as for the lower percentage of female players and of female game designers. Over time, the solutions advanced to avoid sexism and to bridge the gaps between men and women followed three different trends. *First Wave of Game Feminism* Considering the growing importance of technological literacy during the 1990s, many were promoting the creation of computer games specifically designed for girls. Even though these games risk naturalizing gender binaries, it seemed more realistic to transform the game industry one step at a time, by creating spaces where young girls feel comfortable to play. Simultaneously, groups like *Quake Grrl* proved that female players can enjoy beating boys at their own games. *Second Wave of Game Feminism* Between 2000 and 2010, the number of female players increased, but the rarity of women designers, the marginalization of professional female players, and the proliferation of stereotypical avatars persisted. While the conception of gender as socially constructed was spreading, more voices called for gender-neutral games. Some scholars also surfed on this “second wave” of game feminism by turning their attention to the contextual factors that explain gender disparity within gaming practices. Such discussions on gender in games, however, remained mostly centered around white heterosexual women. *Third Wave of Game Feminism* After two decades of game feminism, many scholars are now shifting their focus toward alternative representations of gender, LGBTQ themes, as well as self-reflexivity, diversity, sexuality, and masculinity in video games. Inspired by the most recent developements in gender and queer studies, more researchers adopt an intersectional approach to gender/race/class/age, or a postmodern approach to gender as something that we “do” and that is open to exploration on an individual basis, thus initiating a “third wave” of game feminism. *Conference* Presented in partnership with TAG (Technoculture, Arts and Games, Concordia University), CMS|W (Comparative Media Studies | Writing, MIT), Canada Research Chair In Game Studies & Design (Concordia University), LUDOV (Laboratory for the Documentation and Observation of Video Games, UdeM), Homo Ludens (UQAM), and BAnQ (Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec), this second edition of the *Game History Annual Symposium* will not only provide opportunities to review the history of gender in games, but also to document the emergence of a “third wave” of game feminism. Professionals and scholars from any and all disciplines are invited to submit a proposal in French or in English that would fit in one of these four tracks: *Track 1: Game Feminism* Invited speakers: Suzanne De Castell and Jennifer Jenson, co-founders of *Feminists in Games* (FIG) How have studies of gender in games evolved in the past decades? Have scholars found ways to work on this topic without essentializing gender differences and homogenizing the category “woman?” How can we describe the third wave of game feminism in comparison with the first and the second ones? How can studies of gender in computer games benefit from studies of gender in “traditional games” (role-playing games, board games, dolls, etc.)? *Track 2: Game Representations* Invited speaker: Adrienne Shaw, author of *Gaming at the Edge: Sexuality and Gender at the Margins of Gamer Culture* (University of Minnesota Press, 2015) How have gender representations in games changed? What similarities and differences can be observed between those found in computer games and those found in “traditional” games? Are stereotypical protagonists still pervasive, or there is more room for nuanced, androgynous, and queer avatars? Are there more serious games, indie games, or machinima that challenge stereotypes, educate players on gender issues or question heteronormativity? *Track 3: Game Design* Invited speaker: Brie Code, Lead programmer of *Child of Light* (Ubisoft, 2014) How has the participation of women as players and developers transformed game design? Has the game industry created new genres that are more appealing to women? Has it incorporated, in traditional genres, new elements that attract female players? Does the evolution of game design reflect a change of values regarding gender equality or a better tolerance of diversity? Do computer games provide more freedom than “traditional” games in terms of gameplay? *Track 4: Game Culture* Invited speaker: Todd Harper, author of *The Culture of Digital Fighting Games: Performance and Practice* (Routledge, 2013) How have gender dynamics evolved in game communities? Have those communities opened up to female players and gaymers? To what extend are sexism and sexual harassment still pervasive in geek culture? Are there new pockets of resistance? How and in what areas has the game industry changed its marketing to reach wider audiences than the core young male demographic? *Abstract Submission* Proposals of 800 words (plus bibliography) should be sent to GameHistoryMTL(a)gmail.com before *January 11, 2015*. The proposals should be *anonymous*, include a title, and provide a clear synopsis for a 20-minute presentation. In your email, please specify which track you want to be part of, provide your name, affiliation, and a short biography. Submissions will be reviewed by members of the scientific committee. A double-blind peer review publication project will be launched after the conference. *Conference chairs for the 2015 Edition* Mia Consalvo, Professor at Concordia University Gabrielle Trépanier-Jobin, Postdoctoral Researcher at MIT *Cultural Events* • Screening of the movie *Gaming in Color* (2014) • Exhibition “Gender in Games” • Closing Reception • Montreal International Jazz Festival -- Mia Consalvo, Ph.D. Professor and Canada Research Chair in Game Studies & Design Director, the mLab Co-editor of Sports Videogames, 2013, Routledge Concordia University 7141 Sherbrooke Street West CJ Bldg, 4.407 Montreal, Quebec Canada 514.848.2424 .2574

Fwd: CFP: User Experience, Social Media, and Enterprise Systems for HCI in Business for HCI 2015 in Los Angeles
by Honglei Li 17 Oct '14

17 Oct '14

*Social Media, User Experiences and Enterprise Systems* *Session Chair *Honglei Li, Northumbria University, honglei.li(a)northumbria.ac.uk Nnanyelugo Aham-Anyanwu Northumbria University, nnanyelugo.aham-anyanwu(a)northumbria.ac.uk *Description* User experience refers to the subjective, dynamic and emotional side of technology usage. Originating from the practical side of interface design, user experience has recently been penetrating into the academic field mainly because of the recent user-cantered design stream alongside burgeoning social computing software such as Facebook, LinkedIn, etc. and mobile devices such as Tablet PC like iPad and smartphones. Given this fact, many new software and product developments focus on the enriched user experience to improve product values and expand new business areas. With this wave of user experience design, the software design has gradually shifted from the traditional function-centred method to the user-centred method. User-centred software implies considerations of the holistic user experience including emotional, sensory, communicational and even visual sides of the function. However, the interfaces and functions of most enterprise systems, such as ERP systems are still in their legacy states where users won’t be able to communicate with each other. This session aims at exploring the user experience perspective of enterprise systems to find solutions to tackle the issue of legacy interface of enterprise systems. *Call for Papers* Last decade has experienced a burgeoning growth of diversified social software including social networking software like Facebook, LinkedIn, and SecondLife. Smartphone interface such as IOS and android through iPhone and various other brands brings new perspectives on human computer interactions. Users have come through completely new experience with computer interface and information systems in mobile and social networking applications. However, most enterprise systems such as ERP systems are still using the legacy user interface which is complex to learn and hard to navigate. As today’s workforce gradually sheds the older generation of employees and absorbs the younger ones who have been raised up with vast information technology devices, the views and attitudes on user interfaces of ERP systems will be gradually changed. The needs for interactions with the enterprise systems will be challenged. While fully realization of all user experience dimension might take years, the most convenient solution would be the integration of the social media and the traditional ERP system. Big ERP provider such as SAP has already started their strategic plan to shift toward this direction. SAP is implementing a social media strategy to shift the perception of their ERP software from the company level to the individual level. Their recent plan to acquire Syclo <http://www.syclo.com/>, a leading provider of enterprise mobile applications and technologies, indicates their strategic move the enterprise software to the social level. SAP has also introduced the SAP Jam which allows for social collaboration at the workplace and connects customers, partners and work colleagues with the aim of business-critical problems. SAP Jam can be integrated with and accessed within a firm’s business applications; it can also be accessed on mobile devices and online. Several others ERP vendors like IFS and Oracle also launched their social media-powered ERP software such as IFS. What is the user experience of the current enterprise systems? How users expect from the user experience if they are considered in the development process? Should the enterprise systems be changed to meet the emergent needs of the new generation workforce? What’s the relationship between the use experience of enterprise systems and productivity and business performance? Many interesting issues should centre on interactions of new user experience and the traditional enterprise systems with legacy interface. This session aims at discussing various issues between user experiences and enterprise systems. We welcome high quality papers on the topics of, but not limited to, the following areas: · User Experience of the existing Enterprise Systems · Interaction methods of Enterprise systems · Enterprise systems’ manual or documentation · Ease of use of enterprise systems · User experience requirements analysis for enterprise systems · Influence of stakeholder’s interest on their experience · The relationship between user experience and employee productivity of enterprise systems · Case study of user experience of enterprise systems · User interface analysis of existing enterprise systems such as ERP and BPM systems · Development issues of enterprise systems user interface · User interface design of enterprise systems based on user experience · Social media integration with enterprise systems · Graphical design of enterprise systems · Social experience of enterprise systems · Social identity in enterprise systems · Internal and external factors influencing user experience All submissions will be evaluated for novelty, significance, and soundness. Papers should clearly state the purpose, theory, methodology, results, possible practical implications of the study, and be fully referenced with appropriate international citations. *Important Dates and Submission Method* Deadline for Abstract (Up to 500 words) Submission Sunday 16 November 2014 Notification for Review Results for Abstract Friday 12 December 2014 Deadline for receiving the camera-ready version of invited papers: Friday, 20 February 2015 *If you are interested in submitting the abstract, please reply to Honglei Li *honglei.li(a)northumbria.ac.uk An Invitation will be sent for the submission of the abstract. Call for Papers: Research in the Humanities
by Tama Leaver 16 Oct '14

16 Oct '14

*May be of interest to some of you ...* *Ctrl-Z: New Media Philosophy* Call for Papers: Research in the Humanities <http://www.ctrl-z.net.au/journal/research-in-the-humanities-call-for-papers/> The editors invite submissions to a forthcoming special issue of *Ctrl-Z: New Media Philosophy* on the question of ‘research’ in the humanities today. What counts as research; what doesn’t; and who decides? Does the traditional distinction between critical and creative work still hold? Is creative work, or any form of non-traditional academic work (i.e. whatever doesn’t conform to a notion of the standard academic essay), quantifiable and measurable according to an idea of research modelled on a certain conception of science? And who or what is humanities research for? What are its most appropriate or effective means of dissemination, and what kinds of effects might be expected of it once—*if*—it reaches its proposed destination? The editors have begun to address these questions in earlier issues—see Briggs & Lucy, ‘Art as Research? <http://www.ctrl-z.net.au/journal?slug=briggs-lucy-art-as-research>’ ( http://www.ctrl-z.net.au/journal?slug=briggs-lucy-art-as-research) for example—but there are many other possible responses. Ctrl-Z welcomes contributions in a variety of forms, including: • Essays between 3,000 and 6,000 words • Reviews (books, films, exhibitions, performances, etc.), up to 2,000 words • Audio-visual texts • Short fiction/creative nonfiction between 3,000 and 6,000 words • Poetry Contributors are encouraged to incorporate images in their work, and the journal favours multidisciplinary approaches. The issue is scheduled for publication in 2015, and the deadline for submissions is 31 December 2014. For the journal’s preferred style of presentation, see previous issues. Email submissions to Robert Briggs <R.Briggs(a)curtin.edu.au>.
