23 Oct '14

Hi folks, I am excited to announce that we are launching a new MA in Social Technologies here at Arizona State University, starting in Fall 2015. Please circulate this information and forward to students who might be interested. Priority deadline for applications is Feb 15, 2015. The Masters in Social Technologies (MAST) is a groundbreaking program for students who wish to understand how new technologies affect social and organizational change and to apply that understanding in a variety of professional contexts. Focused on the increasing prominence of social technologies in nearly every facet of contemporary life, MAST is an interdisciplinary degree anchored in social, behavioral, cultural, and design approaches to this new reality. Our faculty members are leading experts in the study of globalization, surveillance, social networking, online activism, computer gaming, networked learning, collective behavior, social media and social change, cultural theory and technology, sport and social media, and the political economy of media. Our flexible curriculum consists of two core courses (Theories of Social Technology and Applied Social Technology), a graduate-level research methods course, a series of elective courses, and a six credit-hour applied project. Working closely with our faculty, students select their coursework and develop a final project appropriate to their educational and vocational goals. Students leave the program with a thorough grounding in social theory and research methods, applied to the social uses of interactive environments, networked technologies, and mobile computing. Graduates from the program are well prepared for doctoral work in social technologies, as well as careers in social media, community management, distance collaboration, and professions that use communication technologies to interact with clients, interest groups, and the general public. Onlife Initiative - book launch - 2. Dec. 2014 - European Parliament
by Charles Ess 23 Oct '14

23 Oct '14

Dear AoIR-ists, Forwarded on behalf of Nicole Dewandre and our participating colleagues. Something to look forward to after you have recovered from Korea? (smile) Please pass on to potentially interested lists and colleagues. - charles ess Professor in Media Studies Department of Media and Communication University of Oslo P.O. Box 1093 Blindern NO-0317 Oslo Norway email: charles.ess(a)media.uio.no == Dear all, Mobile access to internet, IoT, Big Data: all these developments concur to the blurring of the distinction between the off-line and the online environments. The Onlife Initiative explored the societal consequences of this radical transition, and called for the need of re-engineering fundamental notions on which policy frameworks are built. · Is autonomy a good proxy for freedom, now that relationality is at the heart of the life experience? · Can privacy be ensured through proper data management, or other aspects come into play? · Is precaution about anticipation and risk-avoidance or about critical accompaniment of technological developments? · Can attention be considered as an asset, or are our attentional spheres part of our integrity? · Will transparency and control provide a sense of fairness and respect, or will it lead to an experience of saturation and exhaustion for users? · Between representation and direct participation, how does democracy evolve? Addressing this type of questions is of utmost importance if policy-making is to succeed in fostering responsible innovation. Join the debate in the European Parliament on December 2 at 17.00 (Possibility of mainstreaming to be confirmed) Robert Madelin, director general of DG CONNECT, will moderate the discussion. Eva Kaili and Paul Ruebig, MEPs, will chair and close the meeting. The panelists are Mireille Hildebrandt, Stefana Broadbent, Claire Lobet-Maris, Charles Ess, Peter-Paul Verbeek, Yiannis Laouris and myself. The debate will be followed by a drink. New book: Sharing Our Lives Online: Risks and Exposure in Social Media
by David Brake 23 Oct '14

23 Oct '14

Dear colleagues, I wish I could be out there in Korea telling you about this! My book "Sharing Our Lives Online: Risks and Exposure in Social Media" about why people share personal details about their lives on social media and the personal and societal consequences of these practices has just been published by Palgrave Macmillan. At the micro-sociological level its analysis draws on insights from interviews with individual social media users. The book also takes into account a range of macro-sociological influences including the power of software defaults, the changing technological landscape of sharing and the commercial imperatives of the new media industry. It critically reviews the literature about online danger and it ends with recommendations for the industry, policy makers and educators. On a personal note, the book acknowledges the vital role that the AoIR played in helping this book reach fruition. Thank you everyone. While this is a theoretically-informed and fully referenced academic text I am an ex-journalist and I am confident it should be readable by a broad range of students. I have structured the introductory chapter in particular so that it provides a succinct overview of the whole book. Students will also be pleased to hear it is already available in softcover ($28/£18 list) and on Kindle ($18/£10) as well as in hardback ($95/£65). Official details, a sample and further information can be found at http://www.palgrave.com/products/title.aspx?pid=528259 - you can get 30% off via this site if you are not Canadian or Australasian by quoting PM14THIRTY but only to the end of the month. Apologies for cross-posting - if however (paradoxically) after a day or two I have somehow failed to cross-post to a list you are aware of where scholars might find it interesting, please pass it on. And of course I would be pleased to hear if you adopt the book to teach with and find it useful, if you would like to review it or if there are problems I should address. Best wishes, David -- Dr David Brake, Professor of Journalism, Humber College, Dep’t of Media Studies & Information Technology 3199 Lake Shore Blvd W, Toronto ON M8V 1K8 Office: +1 416 675 3111 x79323 @drbrake http://davidbrake.org/ skype:davidbrake
