The SJRC, brings together faculty and graduate students from across all divisions of the University to address contemporary problems that entangle questions of science and knowledge with those of ethics and justice. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to SJRC’s efforts to foster a new domain of research and teaching in science and justice. Possible related areas of research and teaching might include biodata and society, biotechnology and the environment, environmental modeling and environmental politics, technoscience and difference, and sustainability. I thought many of you on this list would find of great interest our latest paper out today, which represents one of the first pilot large-scale content analyses of JSTOR, DTIC, and the Internet Archive. The hope is that this paper will serve as a blueprint and template for others and inspire, seed, and enable a new wave of large-scale internet and literature content analysis research and to open the door to new disciplinary applications like socio-cultural and area studies work. For those interested in working with academic literature collections like JSTOR, government document repositories like DTIC, or the open web via the Internet Archive, this paper provides a blueprint for how to work with the collections, their nuances, artifacts, and strengths, lessons learned (for example how to work with the Internet Archive's 1.6-billion PDF archive in the absence of fulltext search or metadata), and general workflows. http://dlib.org/dlib/september14/leetaru/09leetaru.html ABSTRACT The vast array of academic literature published by the humanities and social sciences disciplines codifies our collective scholarly understanding of how societies function and the beliefs, ideals, and ethnic, religious, and tribal contexts that undergird global societal behavior, yet this material has been largely absent from the recent computational revolution in the study of culture. Applying temporal, geographic, thematic, and citation algorithms to an archive of more than 21 billion words spanning 1.5 million publications from 7 collections, including the entire contents of JSTOR, DTIC, CORE, CiteSeerX, and the Internet Archive's 1.6 billion PDFs, academic literature is seen to offer a powerful new lens onto global culture. Four case studies demonstrate using this archive to map the Nuer ethnic group and identify its top experts, map the literature on food and water security, explore the thematic underpinnings of the Rwandan genocide, and construct a network over the ethnic groups of the world as seen through the combined academic literature of the past half century. Problematizing Cyber Wars Call for Papers CyberOrient: Online Journal of the Virtual Middle East Editor-in-Chief: Daniel Martin Varisco Guest Editor: Helga Tawil-Souri Submission deadline: September 30, 2014 (Full Papers) Aim According to military analysts, since the 1991 Gulf War and even more so since the Hezbollah-Israel 2006 war, we have entered a new phase of warfare, in which kinetic and traditional military power are losing importance to symbolic and media power. Perhaps unsurprisingly given a still-widely held Orientalist view in military circles, many such perspectives revolve around wars and conflicts in the ‘Middle East’ or against ‘Islam’ more broadly – taking place in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Israel/Palestine, Syria, but also on cyber networks and mobile phones. While these claims are of course hyperbole, this special issue of CyberOrient invites articles on questions of how we might define wars in a (new) media-age in the region; whether, why, and how (new) media are increasingly sites of warfare; the relationships between ‘virtual’ and ‘real’ battlespaces. Topics could include the significance of targeting (and bombing) telecommunications and media infrastructures; the use of (new) media as outlets for propaganda during wartime; the mediatization of war and the militarization of media; the role of participatory or social media and mobile communications during and in wars; relationships or differences between official, military, alternative, citizen, and grass-roots (new) media uses during war and conflict; the expanding definition of warzones; commemoration and memorialization of war in a digital age; among others. We welcome submissions from across disciplines and methodological approaches that are empirically and critically grounded. About CyberOrient CyberOrient (http://www.cyberorient.net/) is a peer-reviewed journal published by the American Anthropological Association, in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague. But despite that interest, we still lack a systematic research agenda on search engine use and searcher behaviours, perhaps because the potential for the data is so broad and the fields of study being applied so vast that it is difficult to coordinate and discuss across disciplines. Consequently, researchers usually focus on the methods popular in their fields, but are unaware of other methodological approaches and/or software tools that could help them achieve their research goals. Thus, by collaborating across disciplines, there is substantial opportunity to introduce new methods and research questions to investigators who are working along similar lines but without awareness of each other. GOALS, OBJECTIVES AND OUTCOME The goal of the workshop is to bring together researchers from academia and industry, who are interested in understanding search engine use, both as a primary and secondary source to reflect on user behaviour. We are interested in discussing methods and results in various areas, aiming for establishing a research agenda for information science researchers interested in Web searching. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Theories of Web search engine user behaviours * Evaluating search engine user interfaces * Information retrieval evaluation methods applied to Web search engines * Query log analysis * Eye-tracking research * User guidance in the search process * Incorporating user behaviours into search engine optimization techniques * Usability and user experience in Web searching * Using and sharing information found through search engines * Understanding user behaviours through triangulation of methods (e.g., transaction-log analysis, lab-based studies, online questionnaires, diary studies) TYPES OF SUBMISSIONS The workshop invites short research papers and position papers, as well. We also welcome overviews of relevant research done within a research group over the last few years. Accepted submissions will be presented in a 20-minute presentation. Call for Papers: The Journal of Community Informatics (http://ci-journal.net) Special Issue – Research Methods for Community Informatics The Journal of Community Informatics (JoCI) is seeking scholarly articles and notes from the field for a special issue on Research Methods for Community Informatics. Community Informatics is the study and the practice of enabling communities with Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs). JoCI is an international journal that focuses on how researchers and practitioners work with communities towards the effective use of ICTs to improve their processes, achieve their objectives, overcome the “digital divides” that exist both within and between communities, and empower communities and citizens. This is possible in areas such as health, cultural production, civic management, and e-governance, among others. JoCI is a focal point for the communication of research of interest to a global network of academics, community informatics practitioners, and national and multi-lateral policy makers. JoCI is currently indexed in the IBSS and Google Scholar as well as several indexes of Open Access journals. Efforts are underway concerning additional scholarly indexing. The guest editors for the special issue are: Dr. Colin Rhinesmith (University of Oklahoma, USA), Dr. Mark Wolfe (University of Alberta, Canada), and Andy Bytheway (Retired Professor of Information Management at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, South Africa). Objective This special issue will focus on the methods used to investigate how ICTs can support local economic development, social justice, and political empowerment. Community Informatics (CI) is a point of convergence concerning the use of ICTs for diverse stakeholders, including community leaders and activists, nonprofit groups, policymakers, users/citizens, and the range of academics working across (and integrating) disciplines as diverse as Information Studies, Management, Computer Science, Social Work, Planning and Development Studies. This diversity brings with it a range of methodological approaches – and tensions – to the field of CI. The special issue seeks to both disentangle and organize the use of existing methods in CI research and to explore innovative new approaches used by researchers and practitioners in their work with communities. Topics This special issue seeks articles focused on methodological topics and issues related to community informatics research. We encourage contributions that come from a wide range of perspectives, including (but not limited to): • Conceptual foundations. What are the pros and cons of positivist, interpretivist, and critical methods in the CI context? • Data elicitation. What techniques are needed for reliable data to be collected in local communities, and what is the role of the cloud, “big data,” and data analytics in this context? • Measures of success. What is the extent to which key variables and measures of CI investment success are actually understood? • Ethics. How are research ethics understood in the context of CI work? • Comparative analysis. How can shared local and global research resources be developed for comparative studies in different regions of the world? • Cross-cultural studies. How are data elicitation techniques and methods used in a cross-cultural context? • Extant theory. What is the applicability of other extant theories from related research areas (e.g., MIS, anthropology, science and technology studies, etc.) to the field of CI methodology? We also invite authors to submit “Notes from the Field” from CI practitioners and policy makers that describe relevant methodological topics and issues. Submission procedure and deadlines Full original and unpublished articles for this special issue should be submitted via the JoCI website. Authors are invited to submit full-length papers between 5000-7000 words and notes from the field between 3000-5000 words. All full-length research articles will be double blind peer-reviewed. Notes from the field containing insights and analytical perspectives from practitioners and policy makers are also encouraged – these will not be peer-reviewed.
