Possible topics include but are not limited to: -- new game mediums and platforms (Facebook, iPhone/iPad/iPod, etc) -- representation or performance of race, class, gender and sexuality in games -- gaming culture, game specific cultures, and multicultural and cross-cultural issues -- game development, design, authorship and other industry issues -- game advertising, reviews, packaging, promotion, integrated marketing and other commercial concerns -- political and legal entailments such as regulation, censorship, intellectual property -- ludology, textual criticism, media ecology, narratology, etc as paradigms for games studies -- player generated content in MUDs and MMORPGs, Mods, maps and machinima -- game genres, platforms, consoles, console wars and connections to other media -- serious games for education, business, healthcare, (military) training, etc -- space and place in games, play spaces, virtual/physical communities, mobile gaming and localization -- digital literacy, discourse practices, social norms and norming, the politics of play -- public discourse/controversy over violence, militarism, sex, criminality, racism, etc in games -- game pedagogy and classroom practices, gamification, learning as play II. Submission Process The Game Studies area of the National Popular Culture Association and the American Culture Association Conference, which began as the Video Games Studies area in 2003, has the most enduring footprint of any North American academic organization that give serious attention to the social and cultural impact of games and gaming. The area continues to grow and offers two avenues for scholars to participate and present their work. A. Paper Proposals For individual paper proposal submissions, please submit a 250-word (maximum) abstract by November 1, 2014. Submissions must be made online at http://ncp.pcaaca.org. Panel Proposals For panel submissions, please submit a 250-word (maximum) panel abstract, as well as 100-word abstracts for each individual presentation, by November 1, 2014. Be sure to include the proposed title of the panel, the organizers name, affiliation, mailing address, and email, as well as this information for all panelists. Panel submissions may take the form of debates, dialogs, roundtable discussions, thematic panels, (or other format,) and should be designed to last approximately eighty minutes. III. So that there will be ample time for discussion, each individual paper presentation should be designed to last approximately twelve to fifteen minutes (there will typically be four presentations per session with time for Q&A). Apologies for cross-posting CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS Conditions of Mediation: Phenomenological Approaches to Media, Technology and Communication Editors: Tim Markham and Scott Rodgers In June 2013, the ICA preconference Conditions of Mediation (see http://conditionsofmediation.wordpress.com for further information) brought together scholars from a wide range of perspectives – including audience studies, political theory, metaphysics, media archaeology, software studies, science and technology studies, cultural geography and urban studies – to critically reflect on both the merits and limits of phenomenological approaches for understanding media, in philosophical, theoretical, political and empirical terms. Inspired by this very successful conference, we are now preparing a proposal for an edited book under the same title. The proposed format of the book is to have a substantive introduction, two ‘dialogues’ involving Graham Harman, Lisa Parks, Paddy Scannell, Shaun Moores, Nick Couldry and David Berry (based on their keynote papers), and 10-12 short paper chapters of 4000 words (excluding bibliography). We are therefore issuing an Open Call for Chapter Proposals. If you are interested in contributing a chapter to this edited book, please send a chapter title and 400 word abstract by no later than 15 September 2013 to Scott Rodgers at s.rodgers(a)bbk.ac.uk. Come join us for a symposium and PhD Masterclass at QUT. #digcult14 Making Digital Cultures of Gender and Sexuality with Social Media Creative Industries Faculty Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane – Australia. Organisers: Ben Light, Jean Burgess, Elija Cassidy and Stefanie Duguay 28/29 October, we will be hosting a symposium dedicated to questions of gender, sexuality and social media followed by a PhD masterclass for students interested in sociocultural qualitative approaches to digital media research. Bringing together leading and emerging scholars in the study of the digital, gender and sexuality, the symposium seeks to further interrogate questions of the contemporary making of digital cultures of gender and sexuality. Whilst difference-based approaches to understanding the gendered make up of social media users and audiences have been considered, this symposium focuses more upon the ways in which gender and sexuality are constructed and circulated with and by this media. Additionally, it will seek to explore how sociotechnical elements of social media are being transferred to other digital cultures of gender and sexuality. Speakers include: Kath Albury (University of New South Wales), Jenine Beekhuyzen (Griffith University), Jean Burgess (QUT), Paul Byron (University of New South Wales), Elija Cassidy (QUT) Stefanie Duguay (QUT), Clif Evers (University of Nottingham Ningbo), Ben Light (QUT), Sharif Mowlabocus (University of Sussex), Susanna Paasonen (University of Turku), Kane Race (The University of Sydney) and Emily Van Der Nagel (Swinburne University). The PhD masterclass on the 29 October will be to enable a small group of 15-20 PhD students to engage with a group of internationally recognized researchers, and with each other, to discuss their work and their plans for its development. Both events are free to attend, but places are limited so early registration is advised. Hi AOIR, Reminder! Michael Salvo and I are pleased to invite you to contribute to our collection Rhetoric and Experience Architecture. We welcome proposals from academic researchers and industry practitioners. Please feel free to contact us about this book project. We will both be at CPTSC and SIGDOC this year, and we are happy to meet with you to discuss your proposal! CFP: Rhetoric and Experience Architecture Experience architecture (XA) is an emerging area of study focused on the research and practice of creating technologies, products, policies, and services that serve the needs of various participants. Situated in the Humanities and Social Sciences, XA focuses onissues addressing usability, interaction design, service design, user experience, information architecture and content management for websites, mobile apps, software applications, and technology services. This collection will focus on the research, theory, and practice of creating compelling experiences across digital and physical spaces based on the foundation of rhetoric. This edited collection will consist of an editors’ introduction and three sections. The first section contains eight to twelve chapters that define field connections between rhetoric and experience architecture. The second section is formed by eight to twelve chapters focused on research methodology. The third section includes eight to twelve short vision statements, modeled after the NEH white paper genre, which offer several paths for exploring interdisciplinary trajectories between rhetorical studies and experience architecture.
