CFP: "Technologies and Recording Industries" (Creative Industries Journal, Fall 2015)
by Eric Harvey 02 Oct '14

02 Oct '14

*Hi all, please circulate widely and direct any questions to myself or Kyle at the below emails. Thanks!* CFP: Technologies and Recording Industries Creative Industries Journal, Special Issue 8.2 (Fall 2015) *Deadline: March 6, 2015* The past 15 years have proven transformative for music recording industries around the world, as digital technologies from the ground up (mp3s) and the top down (streaming platforms) have helped transform the landscape of production, promotion, distribution, retail, and fandom. Yet while these transformations have recently upended assumptions about musical practice for artists, industry workers, fans, journalists, and researchers, a broader historical perspective situates them in a legacy more than a century long. Indeed, a history of recording industries told from a media and technology perspective is one of constant flux. The introduction of new media technologies has continually reorganized the practices, regimes of value, discourses, and power relationships of the recording business. This issue of the Creative Industries Journal seeks to address the constitutive roles of technologies in shaping recording industry practices. How have the introduction and adoption of new tools of production, distribution, promotion, or consumption facilitated changes in the creative and industrial practices surrounding popular music in a variety of global contexts? Following Williamson & Cloonan (2007) and Sterne (2014), we specify “recording industries” instead of “music industries” to focus attention on the myriad creative and industrial processes related to music (or, broadly, sound) recordings, and to evade the tendency to group a variety of disparate music and sound-related industries (licensing, instrument sales, live performance) under one heading. We use the plural to assert the multiplicity and variety of recording industries that have emerged over time, which may not have anything to do with the current corporate-owned, multinational recording industry. Possible topics for this issue include, but aren’t limited to: - Connections between technological formats and genres - Streaming services and music distribution - Discourses surrounding the vinyl record resurgence - Collectors and collecting practices - Record stores and the recording industries - New technologies and global/local regimes of representation - Music, technology, and identity - Industry practices of the digital music era - Trade papers and the recording industries - Media mobility vs. audio fidelity - Sound recordings and radio - Television and the recording industry - Failed or ephemeral formats - Re-issues and new formats - Record label histories - Technological experimentation - From cylinder to disk - Recordings as material culture - The history of personal recordings - Internationalization of recording technologies/industries - The recording industry and children’s media - Spoken-word phonography - Taste-making and technologies To be considered for publication, articles should be between 5000 and 6000 words, double-spaced in Harvard Style. For more information on style and formatting, please see Intellect’s style guide. All submissions in these categories will be blind reviewed. Queries regarding potential submissions also are welcome. Authors are responsible for acquiring related visual images and the associated copyrights. *For more information or to submit a query, please contact the issue’s editors Kyle Barnett (kbarnett(a)bellarmine.edu <kbarnett(a)bellarmine.edu>) or Eric Harvey (ericharvey(a)weber.edu <ericharvey(a)weber.edu>) All submissions are due via email by March 6, 2015.* Creative Industries Journal is a peer reviewed journal with a global scope, primarily aimed at those studying and practicing activities which have their origin in individual creativity, skill and talent, and which have a potential for wealth creation. These activities primarily take place in advertising, architecture, the art and antiques market, crafts, design, fashion, film, interactive leisure software, music, the performing arts, publishing, television and radio. -- Eric Harvey, Ph.D. Assistant Professor Department of Communication Weber State University 1395 Edvalson St. Ogden, UT 84408

Best, Jim, Craig, and Ryan *Critical Data, Critical Technology: in Theory* Discussant: David O'Sullivan <http://geography.berkeley.edu/people/person_detail.php?person=486> In recent years, geographers and other social scientists have begun engaging new data infrastructures, representational technologies, and the resulting analyses as they have emerged in private industry, academic research, and government agencies. Moving beyond simple claims of the "end of theory" (Anderson 2008), it is no longer a question of if anyone thinks 'big data' calls for academic analysis. The challenge is now *how* to approach the complex epistemological and ontological issues raised by emerging data and technology writ large. In turn, the new forms of analyses and sources of data have spurred academic debates over the social and political implications of data analytics and technology (Crampton et al. 2014; Kitchin and Dodge 2011). Recently, researchers have proposed a series of prompts that indicate an incipient criticalapproach to data studies (boyd and Crawford 2011; Dalton and Thatcher 2014). However, in this field's nascence, more questions have been raised than answers. For example, geographers and social scientists have yet to address the ways a critical study of data might intersect with and draw from larger critiques of technology. In these paired sessions, we seek to explore and evaluate critical approaches to data, analytics, and new spatial technologies in a common forum. This session focuses on theorizations and conceptual approaches and the complex ontological and epistemological commitments entailed in them. Promising questions include: - How do we situate big data spatially and temporally? In what ways have these contexts impacted its particular development and adoption processes? - What is at stake in data and analytics today? What can/does data change? - Does big data pose challenges to current understandings of 'participation' and 'democracy'? - What relations of power emerge alongside big data? - What formations of surveillance, sousveillance, and privacy are developing? - Who are the subjects in play and how are they subjectified? Under what conditions and relationalities have these actors become subjects of big data? - What are users' experiences and perceptions of big data 'on the ground'? How does this impact the ways in which they leverage spatial big data technologies or produce data? Potential considerations include privacy, social networks, activism, and citizen science. - What lines of resonance or distinction may be drawn between the political economies of 'traditional' spatial technologies/data and spatial big data? How are we to understand the emergent political economic relations of big data specifically? - What new, alternative conceptions of data and knowledge do these processes open? What new systems of knowledge are produced as technologies seek to quantify and calculate ever-more of everyday life and experience? *Critical Data, Critical Technology: in Praxis* Discussant: Monica Stephens <http://www.floatingsheep.org/p/monica-stephens.html> Big data is currently engaged in diverse sectors, including academic research, civic engagement, urban administration, digital humanitarianism, international development, and public health. These diverse practices show potential for integrating principles and lessons from criticalscholarship, but much work needs to be done to build and maintain these connections. How can big data be practiced critically? In what ways is this work already being done? What can practitioners learn from applied studies of technology? How might big data become part of criticalpractice? How can critical scholars benefit from a greater understanding of existing praxis outside the walls of the academy? Recently, researchers have proposed a series of prompts that indicate an incipient critical approach to data studies (boyd and Crawford 2011; Dalton and Thatcher 2014). However, in this field's nascence, more questions have been raised than answers. For example, the very definition and utility of 'small data' remains contested. In these paired sessions, we seek to explore and evaluate critical approaches to data, analytics, and new spatial technologies in a common forum. In this session, we are interested in how practitioners are mobilizing data, technologies, and analytics in ways that resonate with 'critical data and technology studies'. We are interested both in existing practices and in potential connections between theory and praxis. Promising questions include: - How is big data being used right now in various sectors, and in what ways do these practices resonate with or challenge some of the ideas from critical data and technology studies? - How can big data be used to challenge social and political relations? For instance, how is big data utilized in activism, protests, social justice movements, and community organizing? Can researchers use data and technologies in their scholar-activism? - How can new approaches challenge the power effects existing relations of data, technology, and knowledge production? - What application areas are particularly amenable to lessons from critical data and technology studies? In what ways can these lessons translate into new practices? - How can scholars of critical data and technology studies distribute the results of our research to practitioners, in ways that affect positive changes? - How can we build and maintain bridges between researchers and practitioners? *If interested in participating in either session, please submit an abstract of no more than 250 words to Jim Thatcher (**jethatch(a)uw.edu <jethatch(a)uw.edu>**) on or before October 15th, 2014.* *Please indicate in the submission whether you are interested in participating in the Theory or Praxis session.* *Organizers*: Jim Thatcher, University of Washington - Tacoma; Craig Dalton, Bloomsburg University; Ryan Burns - University of Washington -- Ryan Burns Dept of Geography, University of Washington 859-582-9125 http://burnsr77.github.io _______________________________________________ The Air-L(a)listserv.aoir.org mailing list is provided by the Association of Internet Researchers http://aoir.org Subscribe, change options or unsubscribe at: http://listserv.aoir.org/listinfo.cgi/air-l-aoir.org Join the Association of Internet Researchers: http://www.aoir.org/

Fwd: [GAMESNETWORK] Call for papers DiGRA 2015 (14-17 May Lüneburg, Germany)
by Mia Consalvo 29 Sep '14

please circulate widely! thanks, Mia ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Jonas Linderoth <jonas.linderoth(a)ped.gu.se> Date: Mon, Sep 29, 2014 at 9:33 AM Subject: [GAMESNETWORK] Call for papers DiGRA 2015 (14-17 May Lüneburg, Germany) To: GAMESNETWORK(a)uta.fi Call for papers DiGRA 2015 Diversity of play: Games - Cultures – Identities 14-17 May 2015, Lüneburg, Germany www.digra2015.org Video game culture has had a self-image of being a distinct cultural form united by participants identifying themselves as ‘gamers’ for many years. Variations in this identity have been perceived either in relation to preferred platform or level of commitment and skill (newbie, casual, core, pro, etc.). Today the popularity of games has increased dramatically, games have become more specialized and gaming is taking place in a number of divergent practices, from e-sport to gamification. In addition, the gamer position includes a number of roles and identities such as: players, learners, time-fillers, users, fans, roleplayers, theory crafters, speed runners, etc. Furthermore, techniques like gamification and game-based learning, as well as the playful use of computer simulation for training purposes, is making it difficult to distinguish games from non-games. Additionally, video game culture is merging with other forms of popular culture and new mobile technologies are making distinctions between digital and non-digital gaming blurred. Yet, whilst the forms of play seem to have become more diverse, the content of games is often only challenged by independent titles. This is the case despite a maturing audience, some of whom now seem to urge for more diverse themes and representations within games. In the light of increasing criticism of the representations and practices that have dominated much of games culture, it seems that the relationship between the identity of the ‘gamer’ and the content of games is undergoing a change. Traditionally, game studies has tried to find common ground, seeking shared definitions and epistemologies. DiGRA 2015 seeks to encourage questions about the ‘Diversity of play’, with a focus on the multiple different forms, practices and identities labeled as games and/or game culture. The conference aims to address the challenge of studying and documenting games, gaming and gamers, in a time when these categories are becoming so general and/or contested, that they might risk losing all meaning. Given this, what concepts do we need to develop in order for our research to be cumulative and how do we give justice to the diverse forms of play found in different games and game cultures? As in the previous year, DiGRA 2015 will accept submissions in five categories: full papers, abstracts, panel, workshops, and events. All submissions will be peer-reviewed using double blind reviewing. In addition, all submissions will receive a meta review and authors of rejected full papers will have the possibility to send a rebuttal if they perceive they have been given biased or uninformed reviewers. The conference welcomes submissions on a wide range of topics, including, but not limited to, the following: Game cultures Games and intersections with other cultural forms Online gaming and communication in game worlds Gender and gaming Games as representation Minority groups and gaming Childhood and gaming The gaming industry and independent games Game journalism Gaming in non-leisure settings Applications of game studies in other domains Gamification System perspectives and mathematical game theory Hybrid games and non-digital games Game design characteristics Technological systems Simulations Deadlines Submission deadlines 22 January (hard deadline) Acceptance/rejection notification 16 March Rebuttal deadline 19 March Camera ready deadline 14 April Location & Date 14-17 May 2015 Lüneburg, Germany At Campus of Leuphana University of Lüneburg Scharnhorststr. 1 D-21335 Lüneburg For more information and the latest updates regarding the DiGRA 2015 conference, see www.digra2015.org Program Chairs Staffan Björk Jonas Linderoth -- Gamesnetwork, discussion list of Digital Games Research Association, www.digra.org Note: to unsubscribe, send "UNSUBSCRIBE GAMESNETWORK" to LISTSERV(a)UTA.FI from your subscribed email account. CFP: InVisible Culture, Issue 23: "Blueprints" (Deadline: October 15, 2014)
by Anderson, Joel Neville 28 Sep '14

28 Sep '14

Dear Air-L subscribers, InVisible Culture: An Electronic Journal for Visual Culture (IVC) is recirculating the CFP for “Blueprints” as the deadline of Oct. 15, 2014 fast approaches. Please share widely with any potentially interested scholars, artists, relevant listservs and social media platforms, and don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions. Best regards, Joel Joel Neville Anderson PhD Student, Visual and Cultural Studies University of Rochester 978.394.3292 www.joelnevilleanderson.com<http://www.joelnevilleanderson.com> - http://ivc.lib.rochester.edu/cfp-invisible-culture-issue-23-blueprints<http://ivc.lib.rochester.edu/> “Blueprints” – Issue 23 For its twenty-third issue, InVisible Culture: An Electronic Journal for Visual Culture invites scholarly articles and creative works that consider the multiple valences of the topic: blueprints. In his theoretical manifesto, Toward An Architecture, Le Corbusier wrote, “The plan is the generator. Without plan there can be neither grandeur of aim and expression, nor rhythm, nor mass, nor coherence. . . . The plan is what determines everything; it is the decisive moment.” The plan or blueprint is the primary tool of the architect’s and the drafter’s trades—a technical document that bridges creative impulse and constructive labor, intent and execution, virtuality and materiality. Taking shape as a conversation among concept, form, and representation, a blueprint insistently nudges its spectator’s gaze outside its frame. It is understood as a necessary stage on the way to something larger, something grander, something more, and is usually seen not as a self-contained object, but as prescription directed toward a particular outcome. Yet a blueprint may also be the terminus of the unrealized and the unrealizable. Étienne-Louis Boullée’s Cénotaphe à Newton, Le Corbusier’s Ville Contemporaine, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Broadacres, and the Chicago Spire are among the many visionary designs abandoned at the drawing board, whose construction in real space we may now only imagine. In Issue 23, we would like contributors to consider how blueprints—and more broadly, agendas, manifestos, models, or prophesies—negotiate between the present and an imagined, idealized, or impossible future. What qualities and limitations are shared by conceptual architecture and other speculative mediums? How do plans and prototypes function as a critique of present realities? What is the aesthetic value of diagrams, renderings, sketches, or preparatory studies? What occurs when we no longer consider the model as process, but as finished product? What are the mechanisms through which the plan attempts to fill the gap between language and image or event? We welcome papers and artworks that further the various understandings of blueprints. Possible topics of exploration include, but are not limited to: * Conceptual architecture * Models, prototypes, renderings, and preparatory studies * Graphs, cyanotypes, etchings, and other media related to tracing * Political manifestos * Prophecy and speculation * Disparity between concept and execution * Representations of utopia or dystopia * World’s Fairs and Expos * Storyboards and scripts * Unfinished or posthumously completed works * Dance and performance notation * Digital urban planning Please send completed papers (with references following the guidelines from the Chicago Manual of Style) of between 4,000 and 10,000 words to ivc[dot]rochester[at]gmail[dot]com by October 15, 2014. Inquiries should be sent to the same address. Creative/Artistic Works In addition to written materials, InVisible Culture is accepting work in other media (video, photography, drawing, code) that reflect upon the theme as it is outlined above. For questions or more details concerning acceptable formats, go tohttp://ivc.lib.rochester.edu/contribute or contact ivc[dot]rochester[at]gmail[dot]com. Reviews InVisible Culture is also currently seeking submissions for book, exhibition, and film reviews (600-1,000 words). To submit a review proposal, go tohttp://ivc.lib.rochester.edu/contribute or contact ivc[dot]rochester[at]gmail[dot]com. Blog The journal also invites submissions to its blog feature, which will accommodate more immediate responses to the topic of the current issue. For further details, please contact us at ivc[dot]rochester[at]gmail[dot]com with the subject heading “blog submission.” * InVisible Culture: An Electronic Journal for Visual Culture (IVC) is a student run interdisciplinary journal published online twice a year in an open access format. (in reply to a couple of messages about Ello that I noticed.) I've been playing around in Ello for a bit, and I've got a bunch of invites if anyone wants them. it's still a little buggy, but interesting to watch it develop and see if it catches. lots of people from my twitter community are trying it out as well. email me off-list or DM me on twitter if you want an invite! -- sava saheli singh PhD Candidate | Adjunct Instructor | Program Assistant Educational Communication and Technology Program <http://steinhardt.nyu.edu/alt/ect> NYU Steinhardt

Ello/Diaspora

The best critique of Ello I've seen so far comes from a founder of Upcoming and Kickstarter: https://ello.co/waxpancake/post/oy73kFfDdhOPh8Jv9z9pFA Andy Baio notes that Ello is venture capital funded, and unless they have a "very special" relationship with their VCs, it seems unlikely they'll be able to remain ad-free. Diaspora's big failing, IMHO, was that even a friend of mine who codes for a living couldn't get one of its distributed servers set up. It had massive usability issues on that front, meaning its promise of a distributed network was hamstrung from the start as everyone had to rely on centralized servers. Gus

The first is the set of underlying GKG datasets behind our paper that data mined more than 21 billion words of academic literature from JSTOR, DTIC, CORE, CiteSeerX, CIA, and the Internet Archive ( http://dlib.org/dlib/september14/leetaru/09leetaru.html) In the hopes of seeding new kinds of research that incorporate the cultural knowledge of the world's academic literature, we are making the GKG datasets behind that paper available for open research. NOTE that these do NOT contain the text of the articles themselves, only the metadata computed from each article, which includes computed metadata of the references cited in each paper, allowing applications such as identifying the most cited authors and institutions relating to specific geographies, topics, and socio-political groups. The full GKG dataset collection of around 40GB is available: http://blog.gdeltproject.org/announcing-the-africa-and-middle-east-global-a… We have also released a new Human Rights GKG, which encodes in quantitative form a cross-section of the world?s public knowledge of human rights issues across the world, scattered across the hundreds of thousands of textual reports, calls to action, alerts, field interviews, and other material published by organizations throughout the globe. This initial GKG encodes over 110,000 documents encoding a number of the major international human rights report archives, offering a computable overview of global human rights issues over the decades: http://blog.gdeltproject.org/announcing-the-new-human-rights-global-knowled… The GDELT GKG format encodes lists of social groups, organizations, locations, major themes, emotions, and a range of other metadata computed from each document, making it possible to conduct a wide array of studies that blend spatial, semantic, citation, and network analyses ( http://blog.gdeltproject.org/introducing-gkg-2-0-the-next-generation-of-the… ). We're very much looking forward to seeing what you all are able to do with these new GKG collections! For example, the TV industry was faced with tremendous change in technologies during the past decade, such as the digital switchover, the introduction of HDTV, or the provision of 3D content. Large scale asset repositories and different workflows in the content production process had to be introduced. Other media industries faced similar challenges, as the emergence of digital publishing, digital content distribution, or advancement of in-house customer relationship management infrastructures, and the digitalization of workflows. This change towards digital implies a more holistic view of information systems and management in media industries to provide optimal system solutions, and eventually cut costs. Where other industries are well researched in terms of their IT system solutions, in media industries the discussion around content repositories, media management solutions, and digital workflows seems to be predominant. Within the context of this publication, a more holistic view towards information systems and management in media industries shall be introduced, and emphasize the importance of research of business information management and systems in media industries. The media and entertainment industry is the third largest industry segment for investments in information systems. And this particular industry segment is faced with tremendous challenges in terms of organizational, transformational, leadership, customer behaviour, and technological changes. One particular challenge is the transformation of the analogue media world into its digital counterpart. As of today, the successive research of business information management and systems focusing on media and entertainment industries is rather fragmented and stretches over a wide area of research islands such as social media, eCommerce, or eBusiness. To face this challenge, this book focuses on information management and systems for media and entertainment industries and highlighting their particular needs in production, distribution, and consumption. The book shall gather a scientific community around the theme of business information management and systems in the larger context of media and entertainment industries. Special Focus on the Notion NEW approaches of Content and Media in Information Systems & Management Applications in Particular in Application Areas as: Big Data, Crowd, Open Data, Linked Data, Cloud Application, New Business Analytics, Information Visualization, Workflow Management, and Global Digital Production Pipelines. =============================================================================================================== Topics of Interest =============================================================================================================== =============================================================================================================== Management, Marketing, Business Aspects and Strategic Importance of IT and IS&M in Creative eMedia Industries =============================================================================================================== o IS as basis of new business models/new media products o business process modelling o customer intelligence either in real-time / non-real-time o enterprise systems and project management o subscriber management & marketing o business model innovations and analytics o personalized and individualized offerings to increase consumer loyalty o increase revenue from intellectual property (IP) rights and royalties o financial performance management o marketing and targeted marketing for media services and consumer feedback management o subscriber management & marketing o target niche groups and create new revenue streams o increase revenue from intellectual property (IP) rights and royalties o financial performance management =============================================================================================================== Consumer, Audience, Human-Computer-Interaction, and User Viewpoints =============================================================================================================== * perception of media content in systems * understanding audiences, advertisement statistics, audience trends, and audience preferences * social media analysis and marketing * collaborative productions * customer intelligence either in real-time / non- real-time * marketing and targeted marketing for media services and consumer feedback management * target niche groups and create new revenue streams * personalized and individualized offerings to increase consumer loyalty * the behavioural, cognitive, motivational and affective aspects of human and technology interaction in media and content production * digital documents/genres; human information seeking and web navigation behaviours; human information interaction; information visualization in media industries * behavioural information security and information assurance; privacy and trust in human technology interaction * user interface design and evaluation for various applications in business, managerial, organizational domains in media * integrated and/or innovative approaches, guidelines, and standards or metrics for human centred analysis, design, construction, evaluation, and use of interactive devices and information systems * information systems usability engineering; universal usability * the impact of interfaces/information technology on people's attitude, behaviour, performance, perception, and productivity * the elderly, the young, and special needs populations for new applications, modalities, and multimedia interaction in content/media industry * user-centred/participatory/informed design and evaluation for different types of applications in a variety of contexts in the media and content industries. =============================================================================================================== Technology Perspective of the Usage of Media in IS&M in Media Industry and the Application of Media in IS&M across Domains: Technology, Processes, Workflows, Infrastructures and Global Production Pipelines =============================================================================================================== o digital content End-to-End o data warehousing; digital archiving & asset management o data warehousing o digital archiving & asset management o digital workflows and workflow management o workflow management applications o process automation o IT supporting new services: cloud, big data, crowd, linked data, and open data o Decision making systems using media content o ?
