Used for surveillance, drones hunt or kill. But could their air power also be understood as cultural capital? http://transformations-blog.com/would-you-mind-my-drone-taking-a-picture-of…

Win a copy of “OccupyMedia! The Occupy Movement and Social Media in Crisis Capitalism”
by Christian Fuchs 20 Sep '14

20 Sep '14

http://www.triple-c.at/index.php/tripleC/announcement/view/22 You can win one of 20 copies of Christian Fuchs’ new book “OccupyMedia! The Occupy Movement and Social Media in Crisis Capitalism” http://fuchs.uti.at/books/occupymedia-the-occupy-movement-and-social-media-… by participating in tripleC: Communication, Capitalism & Critique’s (http://www.triple-c.at) commonist social media contest: Send tripleC a self-made picture (jpg format) as well as a 500 word short text that symbolises and deals with the following two questions: What’s wrong with capitalism and capitalist social media such as Google, Facebook, Twitter, Weibo, etc. ? How would a commonist social media world look like? Send your picture (just one), text (500 words, not more), and postal address until Saturday Sep 27 to the tripleC office: office(a)triple-c.at The books will be given to the senders of the first 20 submissions (submissions affirmative of capitalism and opposed to commonism are excluded from winning because they contradict question #1). Only one submission per person is possible. By participating you agree that your picture and text will be published together with other submissions in a blog post on http://fuchs.uti.at/blog (if you don’t want to have your name mentioned, then say so in your submission) Zero Books will publish the book at the end of October 2014, so the winners will be among the first getting to read the book. About the book: The Occupy movement has emerged in a historical crisis of global capitalism. It struggles for the reappropriation of the commodified commons. Communications are part of the commons of society. Yet contemporary social media are ridden by an antagonism between private corporate control (YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) and self-managed, commons-based activist media. In this work, Christian Fuchs analyses the contradictory dialectic of social media in the Occupy movement. Drawing on a political economy framework and interpretation of the results of the OccupyMedia! Survey, in which more than 400 Occupy activists reported on their social media use, OccupyMedia! The Occupy Movement and Social Media in Crisis Capitalism shows how activists confront the contradictions of capitalism and communication in the age of crisis and social media. The book discusses the contradiction between commercial and alternative social media and argues that the existence of a surveillance-industrial complex expressed in the PRISM system shows the urgent necessity to create social media beyond Facebook and Google. Table of Contents 1. Introduction: The Crisis of Capitalism 2. Protests in Crisis Capitalism 3. Occupy and Digital Media 4. Research Method: The OccuyMedia! Survey 5. Results of the OccupyMedia! Survey 5.1. Analysis of the Respondents’ Demographic Data 5.2. Defining the Occupy Movement 5.3. Occupy and Social Media 5.4. Communicating Activism 5.5. Corporate and Alternative Social Media 6. Call For Abstracts: Information Ethics Roundtable on Transparency and Secrecy
by Kay Mathiesen 19 Sep '14

19 Sep '14

Information Ethics Roundtable 2015 April 9-10, 2015 University of Wisconsin-Madison, Union South http://ier2015.org Call for Papers Theme: Transparency and Secrecy Keynote Speakers Louise Amoore, Professor of Geography, Durham University (UK), author of The Politics of Possibility: Risk and Security Beyond Probability (Duke University Press, 2013). Christopher Kutz, C. William Maxeiner Distinguished Professor of Law; Director, Kadish Center for Morality, Law and Public Affairs, University of California, Berkeley. Transparency is important in a variety of ways, and disputes about transparency and secrecy permeate much of our public discourse. This year’s meeting of the IER seeks papers from a variety of perspectives and disciplines addressing questions about transparency and secrecy, for example: - - What is transparency? What does it mean for something to be kept secret or made transparent? - - What justifies transparency in different domains? - - When is transparency bad, or unjustifiable? When is secrecy good, or justifiable? - - Lots of organizations seek to make government and corporate actions transparent (e.g., fact-checking organizations, open records advocacy organizations, market watchdog groups). Do they succeed? What criteria should we use to determine whether they succeed? Do they introduce other questions of information flow? - - What policies in scientific research and publishing, in journalism, in government, and in commerce best promote transparency? - - Is secret law really law? - - Is it possible to maintain and build trust within a climate of secrecy? The goal of the 2015 Roundtable is to bring together scholars and professionals to examine these and related issues pertaining to transparency and secrecy, broadly construed. Hence, we welcome submissions on these and any related topics, and we encourage submissions from a broad range of disciplines. Please submit an abstract of about 500 words to ier(a)slis.wisc.edu by January 5, 2015. Abstracts will be peer reviewed, and notification of acceptance status will be sent by January 20, 2015. Paper drafts for commentators will be due by March 10, 2015. More information is available at http://ier2015.org. For specific questions and inquiries, please contact organizer Alan Rubel at arubel(a)wisc.edu.

In this course, weâll analyze the interaction between society and contemporary information technologies, in a multicultural and comparative perspective. In doing so, weâll examine what data and evidence are in the social sciences, how it is used, and how it is interpreted." In the second half of the course, we'll explore starting an all-language, MIT OCW-centric university and school, World University and School, asking further (in the context of the first half's focus on how the information revolution emerged), and in terms of questions about agency (from a Castellian perspective), in what ways to grow this conversation remarkably and flourishingly on the internet? In what ways can WUaS build on great universities in innovative ways? And what are some of the inter-lingual implications of this? We'll also problematize the 9 main areas below at WUaS - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/. And we'll develop your questions into course themes.
