CFP Reminder: Special Issue of The Journal of Community Informatics
by Rhinesmith, Colin H. 14 Sep '14

14 Sep '14

Call for Papers: The Journal of Community Informatics (http://ci-journal.net) Special Issue – Research Methods for Community Informatics The Journal of Community Informatics (JoCI) is seeking scholarly articles and notes from the field for a special issue on Research Methods for Community Informatics. Community Informatics is the study and the practice of enabling communities with Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs). JoCI is an international journal that focuses on how researchers and practitioners work with communities towards the effective use of ICTs to improve their processes, achieve their objectives, overcome the “digital divides” that exist both within and between communities, and empower communities and citizens. This is possible in areas such as health, cultural production, civic management, and e-governance, among others. JoCI is a focal point for the communication of research of interest to a global network of academics, community informatics practitioners, and national and multi-lateral policy makers. JoCI is currently indexed in the IBSS and Google Scholar as well as several indexes of Open Access journals. Efforts are underway concerning additional scholarly indexing. More information regarding JoCI is available at http://ci-journal.net. The guest editors for the special issue are: Dr. Colin Rhinesmith (University of Oklahoma, USA), Dr. Mark Wolfe (University of Alberta, Canada), and Andy Bytheway (Retired Professor of Information Management at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, South Africa). Objective This special issue will focus on the methods used to investigate how ICTs can support local economic development, social justice, and political empowerment. Community Informatics (CI) is a point of convergence concerning the use of ICTs for diverse stakeholders, including community leaders and activists, nonprofit groups, policymakers, users/citizens, and the range of academics working across (and integrating) disciplines as diverse as Information Studies, Management, Computer Science, Social Work, Planning and Development Studies. This diversity brings with it a range of methodological approaches – and tensions – to the field of CI. The special issue seeks to both disentangle and organize the use of existing methods in CI research and to explore innovative new approaches used by researchers and practitioners in their work with communities. Topics This special issue seeks articles focused on methodological topics and issues related to community informatics research. We encourage contributions that come from a wide range of perspectives, including (but not limited to): • Conceptual foundations. What are the pros and cons of positivist, interpretivist, and critical methods in the CI context? • Data elicitation. What techniques are needed for reliable data to be collected in local communities, and what is the role of the cloud, “big data,” and data analytics in this context? • Measures of success. What is the extent to which key variables and measures of CI investment success are actually understood? • Ethics. How are research ethics understood in the context of CI work? • Comparative analysis. How can shared local and global research resources be developed for comparative studies in different regions of the world? • Cross-cultural studies. How are data elicitation techniques and methods used in a cross-cultural context? • Extant theory. What is the applicability of other extant theories from related research areas (e.g., MIS, anthropology, science and technology studies, etc.) to the field of CI methodology? We also invite authors to submit “Notes from the Field” from CI practitioners and policy makers that describe relevant methodological topics and issues. Submission procedure and deadlines Full original and unpublished articles for this special issue should be submitted via the JoCI website. Authors are invited to submit full-length papers between 5000-7000 words and notes from the field between 3000-5000 words. All full-length research articles will be double blind peer-reviewed. Notes from the field containing insights and analytical perspectives from practitioners and policy makers are also encouraged – these will not be peer-reviewed. All authors should provide a note to the editors via the website indicating their interest in having their submissions considered for the special issue on “Research Methods for Community Informatics.” Interested authors should consult the journal’s editorial policies and author guidelines for submissions at http://ci-journal.net/index.php/ciej/information/authors. Full article draft submissions due: November 15, 2014. Notes from the field due: December 15, 2014. All inquiries should be directed to: Colin Rhinesmith, Guest Editor Email: crhinesmith(a)ou.edu<mailto:crhinesmith@ou.edu> --- Colin Rhinesmith, Ph.D. Assistant Professor School of Library and Information Studies University of Oklahoma email: crhinesmith(a)ou.edu<mailto:crhinesmith@ou.edu> phone: (405) 325-3921 web: http://crhinesmith.com

2nd CFP for AAG 2015: Digital Connectivity, Inclusion, and Inequality at the World's Economic Margins
by Mark Graham 13 Sep '14

13 Sep '14

Dear colleagues, As the deadline draws nearer, please consider submitting to the session below. (with apologies for cross positing) *Digital Connectivity, Inclusion, and Inequality at the World’s Economic Margins* AAG Annual Meeting <http://www.aag.org/cs/annualmeeting/call_for_papers>, Chicago, April 21-25, 2015 *Organisers: * *Mark Graham <http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/people/?id=165> and Chris Foster <http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/people/?id=356>, University of Oxford* We are in the throes of a global transformation of digital connectivity. Over six billion people have access to phones and two and a half billion people use the internet. Meanwhile, governments, international organisations, and corporations are developing plans, projects, and policies to connect the remaining disconnected. Fibre-optic cables, laptops for every child, and drones, balloons, and satellites all beaming down internet access are just some of the strategies being actively planned to bring connectivity to the rest of the world in the coming years. As we approach a situation in which almost half of humanity is online, we need to explore the difference people expect connectivity to make at the world’s economic peripheries. Will connectivity amplify or deepen economic inequalities? Should we expect empowerment, inclusion, and opportunities; or further exploitation and extraversion? This session brings together papers that seek to explore the differences that connectivity makes, and can make, in the contemporary international division of labour and on-going global shifts in economic flows. It will critically explore ‘Bottom of the Pyramid’ networked capitalism, and the opportunities, struggles, and alternatives that it underpins. It will also facilitate a space for research that addresses the central question of ‘who benefits and who doesn’t from the increasing networking of the world’s population?’ *Potential topics include:* - Discourses around connectivity, inclusion, and exclusion in the Global South - ICT and development policies and who they ultimately benefit. - Changes to global value chains or production networks - Opportunities for upgrading or disintermediation - Empirical or theoretical engagements with the idea of ‘connectivity’ and the roles that it can play amongst the world’s poorest - Contemporary or historical treatments of the links between connectivity and inequality - Alternative ways of imagining or envisioning connectivity at the world’s economic peripheries - Case studies of global ‘body shopping’, digital work, or bottom of the pyramid capitalism - Policies and initiatives for digital connectivity which support inclusion and reduced inequality *Submission Procedure:* To be considered for the session, please send your abstract of 250 words or fewer, to: mark.graham(a)oii.ox.ac.uk and christopher.foster(a)oii.ox.ac.uk The deadline for receipt of abstracts is October 1 2014. Notification of acceptance will be before October 7. All accepted papers will then need to register for the AAG conference at aag.org. Accepted papers will be considered for a special issue or edited volume edited by the organisers. ------------------------------------------ Dr Mark Graham Associate Professor and Senior Research Fellow Oxford Internet Institute University of Oxford Research Fellow Green Templeton College University of Oxford Visiting Research Associate School of Geography and the Environment University of Oxford oii.ox.ac.uk/people/graham <http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/people/graham> | geospace.co.uk <http://www.geospace.co.uk> | Information Geographies <http://geography.oii.ox.ac.uk> | wikichains.org <http://www.wikichains.org> | @geoplace <http://twitter.com/geoplace> | zerogeography blog <http://www.zerogeography.net/> | Connectivity, Inclusion and Inequality Group <http://cii.oii.ox.ac.uk/> <http://twitter.com/geoplace>

AAG 2015 2nd CFP - From Online Sweat Shops to Silicon Savannahs: Geographies of Production in Digital Economies of Low-Income Countries
by Mark Graham 13 Sep '14

13 Sep '14

Dear colleagues, As the deadline draws nearer, please consider submitting to the session below. (with apologies for cross positing) *From Online Sweat Shops to Silicon Savannahs: Geographies of Production in Digital Economies of Low-Income Countries* AAG Annual Meeting <http://www.aag.org/cs/annualmeeting/call_for_papers>, Chicago, April 21-25, 2015 (sponsored by the Economic Geography and Development Geographies specialty groups) *Organizers:* Mark Graham <http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/people/?id=165>, Nicolas Friederici <http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/people/?id=332>, and Isis Hjorth <http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/people/?id=169> University of Oxford Throughout the early 21st century, Internet and mobile phone access in developing countries has skyrocketed, and today the majority of people on the planet are connected through information and communication technologies (ICTs). Yet, while basic ICT access is increasingly level across income groups and geographies, production in the global digital economy is still, and maybe increasingly, dominated by incumbent multinational technology corporations or fast-scaling web startups. These businesses tend to roll out their products (with some local adaptation) across the globe, but maintain their coordinating and creative activities in places like Silicon Valley, Tel Aviv, or London, exploiting both agglomeration and dispersion economies in digital production (Malecki & Moriset, 2007; Moriset & Malecki, 2009). How does digital production in low-income countries fare in the face of this dominance? Policymakers and the private sector in several low-income countries (especially in Sub-Saharan Africa) have set out to transform their economies through ICTs, explicitly emphasizing local digital production. Two sectors that are often seen as promising are (1) low-skill/cost-competition, such as business process outsourcing and digital microwork, and (2) high-skill/entrepreneurial innovation, such as startups developing and commercializing mobile and online applications. However, what are the concrete and realistic potentials and possibilities for low-income countries to become important hubs for digital production? What are palpable economic outcomes of Kenya’s status as the “Silicon Savannah” or Lagos as the “Silicon Lagoon,” and who are the winners and losers of local ICT entrepreneurship and innovation? Do ICTs really deliver economic inclusion and employment to remote geographies and low-income groups, or are we witnessing the rise of online sweatshops that further enhance exploitation of vulnerable populations? This session will explore these themes, encouraging contributions from a variety of perspectives. We invite authors to consider digital production in low-income/developing countries through lenses such as: - Empirical or theoretical perspectives on digital production and its (uneven) geographies - Discourse around digital production and its promises and risks - Distributions of value creation and extraction across actor groups (winners/losers) - Tensions of scaling versus local adaptation in digital production, in application to geography and inclusion/exclusion effects - Uneven production geographies within countries, in particular, differences and divides between rural/peri-urban/urban clusters - Socio-demographic analyses of economic actors engaging in digital production - Case studies of low-skill/cost-competition digital production (e.g., business process outsourcing, microwork, etc.) - Case studies of high-skill/entrepreneurial innovation in digital production (e.g., mobile/online applications startups, technology innovation hubs) - Analyses and recommendations for local and international policy pertaining to digital production *Submission Procedure:* To be considered for the session, please send your abstract of 250 words or fewer, to: mark.graham(a)oii.ox.ac.uk, nicolas.friederici(a)oii.ox.ac.uk, and isis.hjorth(a)oii.ox.ac.uk The deadline for receipt of abstracts is October 1 2014. Notification of acceptance will be before October 7. All accepted papers will then need to register for the AAG conference at aag.org. Accepted papers will be considered for a special issue or edited volume edited by the organizers. Malecki, E. J., & Moriset, B. (2007). Our intent is to hire the candidate, either senior or junior, best able to help our SI Group lead the development of Social Informatics, an opportunity greatly enabled by the recent merger into the SoIC of the IUB Department of Information and Library Science (ILS). Candidates with interests in ethnography, social and political values in computing, economic and policy perspectives on information technology, and internet and media studies are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants should have an established record (senior level) or demonstrable potential for excellence (junior level) in research and teaching, and a Ph.D. in a relevant area or (junior level) expected before August 2015. The SI Group in the Informatics Division currently has six members whose work is grounded in social science and humanities perspectives, through which we study the way computing and society co-construct each other. As part of the Rob Kling Center for Social Informatics, we have strong ties to other faculty at IUB who share our orientation to Science and Technology Studies, including those involved in Human/Computer Interaction, the new IUB Media School, Cognitive Science, and The Information Society journal. SI faculty and their PhD students share interests in a wide variety of research areas, including Human-Robot Interaction, Information and Communication Technology for Development, Community Informatics, the History of Computing in International Perspective, Organizational Informatics, Computing and Language, Technology Ethics and the Law, Participatory Design, and related areas. The person hired will need to teach in our core curriculum, which includes information ethics and organizational informatics. The SoIC is the first of its kind and among the largest in the country, with unsurpassed breadth. Its mission is to excel and lead in education, research, and outreach spanning and integrating the full breadth of computing and information technology. It includes Computer Science, Informatics, and Library and Information Science, with over 85 tenure-line faculty, 900 graduate students, and 1100 undergraduate majors. Its degrees include B.A. and B.S. in Computer Science, B.S. in Informatics, Master’s in Computer Science, Security Informatics, Bioinformatics, Human Computer Interaction Design, Information Science, and Library Science, and Ph.D.s in Computer Science, Informatics, and Information Science. Hi IR15 participants. I just made a reservation for a twin room at the conference hotel (Beomeo) in Daegu (Oct. 20-25), and in order to save a bit of money I am looking for someone to share it with me. The price will be 375.000 KRW each (if you stay for 5 days) which is 200.000 KRW cheaper than a standard double room for 1 person. Let me know ASAP if you’re interested. Please send a few words about yourself to my email ak(a)dac.au.dk<mailto:ak@dac.au.dk> Oh, and me? who am I? My name is Ane Kathrine, I’m a PhD student from Aarhus University in Denmark, and I’m going to participate in the Doctoral Colloquium and a roundtable at IR15.
