CFP Reminder: Digital Intimacies--Middle East Journal of Culture and Communication
by Elisabetta Costa 08 Sep '14

08 Sep '14

*Middle East** Journal of Culture and Communication* *Special Issue Call for Papers * *Digital Intimacies: * *Exploring digital media and intimate lives in the Middle East* Over the last decade, the spread of digital technologies has profoundly reshaped intimate lives worldwide, transforming the ways in which people are involved in intimate relationships and experience love, sexuality and emotions in everyday lives. Like other places, in the Middle East, millions use the internet on a daily basis to access a variety of music and cultural products, and to communicate, create and maintain relationships with partners, family members, friends and lovers, as well as for activism. Indeed, along with providing spaces for different modes of activism and resistance, digital platforms have become critical arenas in which young people negotiate ideas and practices of love, dominant gender roles and religious and societal values. While some works have begun to critically engage with the use of the Internet for activism, very little is known of the ways in which digital platforms and different technologies (including mobile phones) can remold imaginaries and practices of love and friendship and mediate the ways in which "intimacy" is experienced and lived in the Middle East. This special issue aims to fill the gap in the scholarship on intimate lives and digital media in the Middle East by focusing on the everyday uses of digital platforms and addressing their material, gendered and imaginative implications for practices. We welcome articles from a wide range of disciplines (including and not restricted to anthropology, sociology, internet, cultural and media studies) that draw on empirically-grounded studies and that raise broader methodological and theoretical reflections. Some of the questions we hope to address are: 1. New imaginaries of love and marriage: how does people's access to online cultural products (within Islamic and non-Islamic contexts) contribute to remoulding their romantic imaginations, conventional courtship practices and intimate desires? 2. Digital media practices: which are the actual practices whereby young people create, maintain, and end intimate relationships through digital media? How do social media expand inter-personal communicative possibilities and widen people's social networks beyond immediate family and community based networks? 3. Digital media in long-distance relationships: how are digital media used in long-distance relationships between family members and lovers, in national and transnational contexts? 4. Digital media and social change: how do media practices challenge, reproduce and reinforce dominant social practices and gendered imaginaries? What is the impact of online practices on the way people experience intimacy in the everyday life? 5. Digital technologies, sex and sexuality: how do people have sex online? How do they produce and consume pornography? 6. The use of the internet by LGBTQ people: how do they create network, form communities and communicate online? Deadline for submission of abstracts is *30 September 2014*. Abstracts should not exceed 500 words and should provide a short explanation of your contribution to this special issue, provide a clear description of the proposed approach, the theoretical framework and empirical data. Notification of acceptance of abstracts: 15 November 2014 Deadline for submission of complete manuscripts: 30 March 2015 Articles should be between 6000- 7000 words long and include an abstract of 150 words, the author's affiliation and email address and at least five keywords Please send a paper proposal along with a short bio by 30 September 2014 to Elisabetta Costa (University College London) at e.costa(a)ucl.ac.uk; and to Laura Menin (University of Milano Bicocca) at l.menin(a)campus.unimib.it. Learning Analytics and Knowledge Conference (LAK15) Marist College, Poughkeepsie, NY http://lak15.solaresearch.org/call-for-papers The LAK conferences bring together an inter-disciplinary network of leading international researchers who are exploring the role and impact of analytics on teaching, learning, training and development. The call for papers is now open: http://lak15.solaresearch.org/call-for-papers There are three types of submissions, each with different submission dates: 1. Main research conference: http://lak15.solaresearch.org/author-instructions: DUE Oct 14, 2014 2. Practitioner's track: http://lak15.solaresearch.org/practitioner-instructions DUE Nov 3, 2014 3. Doctoral Consortium: http://lak15.solaresearch.org/doctoral-consortium DUE Oct 31, 2014 This is the 5th LAK conference and promises to be our most successful event to date. LAK15 will be held at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY. The practitioner stream (#2 above) is a new focus, as feedback from previous conferences indicated that vendors and academics would like the option of a non-research track that allows for sharing of practices and innovations. Please share this call with colleagues and other venues (listservs, etc).

Tool to convert Website to PDF
by Leonie Tanczer 08 Sep '14

08 Sep '14

Dear All, I am currently looking for software to extract the whole content of a website to automatically convert each site of this webpage to a PDF. I am aware of Acrobat XI Pro. However, after multiple attempts I encountered the problem that it is limited to 10.000 levels (even when indicating to extract the whole site) and the programme crashes before finishing the job. As I am working with governmental websites, with huge amounts of content, this is not sufficient. I am also aware of GNU Wget, yet it only exports the sites in HTML format. As I would like to analyse the content in a Qualitative Data Analysis Software, specifically MAXQDA, which does not allow the import of HTML data, I am struggling here as well. I was wondering if anyone has ever conducted a research with a similar technique before and if you are aware of software which could support my data collection/extraction process. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you, Leonie ___________________________________________ Leonie Maria Tanczer PhD Candidate School of Politics, International Studies & Philosophy Queen's University Belfast Twitter: @leotanczt http://bit.ly/1d7O7kj <http://bit.ly/1d7O7kj>

Tools to collect network data from Vimeo
by Xanat Meza 08 Sep '14

08 Sep '14

Hello everyone, hope you are well. I have noticed that most studies on video networking sites focus on Youtube, so I would like to explore the possibility of doing something in Vimeo. Anyone has had experience collecting data on this website? Can you recommend any tools for collection and visualization of networks for Vimeo? Thanks in advance, ________________________________ Xanat V. Meza M.A. Media and Communication Cyber Emotions Research Center Yeungnam University B.D. Tools/Methods for Analyzing Photos- ethical issues?
by Janet Salmons, Ph.D. 08 Sep '14

08 Sep '14

I am responding with a follow-up question to Ana Maria Quiros, with plans to collect "to collect photo metadata and am specifically interested in the tags, descriptions, number of likes, and album names of individual photos." And I will pose it generally to the list: I am interested in your view of ethical issues and approaches for such a study. Are you obtaining consent from the people who posted the images? How will you protect anonymity if you plan to use metadata? Will you have any other interactions with them, for example an interview to ask about the motivations behind posting the image? Or their explanation of what the image represents? Just curious.... You might find this study of interest <http://www.natcen.ac.uk/media/282288/p0639-research-using-social-media-repo…>-- about users' perspectives on the use of their posts (including images) as data. Fwd: Re: Tool to convert Website to PDF

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: "Elijah Wright" <elijah.wright(a)gmail.com> Date: Sep 7, 2014 1:57 PM Subject: Re: [Air-L] Tool to convert Website to PDF To: "Leonie Tanczer" <ltanczer01(a)qub.ac.uk> Cc: Something like this: https://sites.google.com/site/torisugari/commandlineprint2 Having a browser engine print to file from cli is only one way to attack this. My first inclination was to suggest piping the output from the lynx text browser through Ghostscript. If you don't care about any of the visual affordances of technology on the web, that would be a heck of a lot quicker. (Eg, do you really just want the words?) You will likely want to use wget or similar to spider the site, then extract the list of urls, then in a second pass use a heavier renderer (big fat firefox....) to convert to pdf. It's going to take a very long time, if you really have 10k+ pages. You might consider truncating the scope of your research to a narrower subset - or otherwise expect to become quite practiced at solving this style of problem. Asking the maxqda folks to enhance their software would be another way to proceed - it's not just you who runs into this perennial problem. :-) --e On Sep 7, 2014 10:56 AM, "Leonie Tanczer" <ltanczer01(a)qub.ac.uk> wrote: > Dear All, > > I am currently looking for software to extract the whole content of a > website to automatically convert each site of this webpage to a PDF. > > I am aware of Acrobat XI Pro. CFP: Case Studies in Strategic Communication
by Daren Brabham 07 Sep '14

07 Sep '14

Case Studies in Strategic Communication (ISSN: 2167-1974) is an online, peer-reviewed, open access journal published by Annenberg Press at the University of Southern California. www.csscjournal.org. Case Studies in Strategic Communication (CSSC) welcomes case submissions for current and future volumes addressing a broad range of strategic communication issues, including campaigns and programs in: public relations, advertising, marketing, integrated marketing communication, social media, crisis communication, online community management, health communication campaigns, and more. CSSC's case studies are ideal for teaching and learning, illustrating in-depth situations in strategic communication. Cases do not resemble typical social scientific research articles found in other journals. Rather, the focus is to tell compelling stories about how organizations launched campaigns, weathered crises, or used particular strategies and tactics to achieve objectives. Now in its third volume, cases published to date have covered topics such as: - Harnessing fans as in-stadium social media brand ambassadors during professional baseball games (Volume 1, 2012) - A college campus advertising campaign to curb binge drinking (Volume 2, 2013) - The CDC's fictional zombie invasion campaign to promote emergency preparedness (Volume 2, 2013) - The 1993 Lucasville prison riot's lessons for crisis communication and media relations (Volume 3, 2013) - Tackling taboo and shame in the marketing of vibrators (Volume 3, 2013) - New Jersey's campaign to reignite tourism after Hurricane Sandy (Volume 3, 2013) CSSC's cases are free to use for your research and teaching. A unique feature of CSSC cases is the inclusion of discussion questions and classroom activities at the end of each article. All submissions undergo blind peer review. As an online journal, hyperlinks and multimedia content used to augment cases are welcome. Cases and instructions for authors can be found at www.csscjournal.org. Questions about the appropriateness of a case submission? Feel free to contact the editor at csscjournal(a)gmail.com. Thanks! db --- Daren C. Tools/Methods for Analyzing Photos
by Ana Maria Quiros 07 Sep '14

Hi Everyone, I'm searching for software and research methods advice for studying online images. I want to collect photo metadata and am specifically interested in the tags, descriptions, number of likes, and album names of individual photos. I'm currently focusing on Pinterest, Flickr, and Instagram but would eventually like to expand the study to include other social media platforms. I found NodeXL to be helpful with mapping Flickr tag relationships but it fails to collect essential meta data to understand the strength of connections. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
