Lee Rainie & Barry Wellman MIT Press http://amzn.to/zXZg39 Print $15 Kindle $9 Old/NewCyberTimes http://bit.ly/c8N9V8 ________________________________________________________________________ Dear AoIR Members ASA's Section on Communications and Information Technologies is running a membership drive right now. And if you are a student who is already an American Sociological Association member, you are eligible for a FREE CITASA membership! Just fill out the online form at the following address to receive a free section membership: http://tinyurl.com/CITASA-freestudent The deadline is September 20th for requesting a free membership. Please note: we can only provide the free section memberships, so students must already be a member of the ASA, but that is already true for all students who attended the recent annual meetings in San Francisco. As background, the number of panels that CITASA gets at each ASA is directly determined by section membership. Thus, each membership is important to maintaining a vibrant space for research on communications and technology. If we can get about 25 students to request free section memberships (which is not unusual), we are likely to go over the 400 member mark for the first time in our history and get an additional session at the 2015 ASAs! Also we are creating a section that will foster more work in Media Sociology, which includes creating more space and opportunities for those scholars to share their work. So, we really hope you will forward this to any student who might be eligible and implore them to fill out this online form. Thanks so much for your help in this effort! Sincerely, Barry Wellman and Erin M. Evans PhD Candidate Department of Sociology University of California, Irvine emevans(a)uci.edu http://www.sociology.uci.edu/socio_grad_profile/emevans

Call for chapter proposals: Conditions of Mediation
by Scott Rodgers 06 Sep '14

06 Sep '14

Apologies for cross-posting CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS Conditions of Mediation: Phenomenological Approaches to Media, Technology and Communication Editors: Tim Markham and Scott Rodgers In June 2013, the ICA preconference Conditions of Mediation (see http://conditionsofmediation.wordpress.com for further information) brought together scholars from a wide range of perspectives – including audience studies, political theory, metaphysics, media archaeology, software studies, science and technology studies, cultural geography and urban studies – to critically reflect on both the merits and limits of phenomenological approaches for understanding media, in philosophical, theoretical, political and empirical terms. Inspired by this very successful conference, we are now preparing a proposal for an edited book under the same title. The proposed format of the book is to have a substantive introduction, two ‘dialogues’ involving Graham Harman, Lisa Parks, Paddy Scannell, Shaun Moores, Nick Couldry and David Berry (based on their keynote papers), and 10-12 short paper chapters of 4000 words (excluding bibliography). We are therefore issuing an Open Call for Chapter Proposals. If you are interested in contributing a chapter to this edited book, please send a chapter title and 400 word abstract by no later than 15 September 2013 to Scott Rodgers at s.rodgers(a)bbk.ac.uk. Those that are subsequently invited to submit a full chapter will need to have this completed by 1 March 2014. Please direct any inquiries to Scott Rodgers at s.rodgers(a)bbk.ac.uk. We look forward to receiving your chapter proposals.

Coders Needed in Two New Areas
by Shulman, Stu 05 Sep '14

05 Sep '14

The AoIR community has generated a wonderful stream of student and faculty text data coders over the years. We have enjoyed working with language and topic specific expert groups and expect to grow the number of opportunities for students to earn money while learning about text classification and. Right now we are searching for two skill sets: - Arabic speaking coders who want to work with Islamic State Twitter data. - English speaking coders with an understanding of, and professional interest in, the cosmetics industry. We currently pay $13/hour. All active coders receive a gratis Enterprise individual DiscoverText account which can be used for personal research. Please email me directly and send your CV if you are interested in either post. ~Stu -- Dr. Stuart W.
