two new datasets - knowledge graph over academic literature and over human rights reports
by kalev leetaru 24 Sep '14

24 Sep '14

I thought many of you would find of great use two new GDELT Global Knowledge Graph (GKG) datasets released late yesterday. The first is the set of underlying GKG datasets behind our paper that data mined more than 21 billion words of academic literature from JSTOR, DTIC, CORE, CiteSeerX, CIA, and the Internet Archive ( http://dlib.org/dlib/september14/leetaru/09leetaru.html) In the hopes of seeding new kinds of research that incorporate the cultural knowledge of the world's academic literature, we are making the GKG datasets behind that paper available for open research. NOTE that these do NOT contain the text of the articles themselves, only the metadata computed from each article, which includes computed metadata of the references cited in each paper, allowing applications such as identifying the most cited authors and institutions relating to specific geographies, topics, and socio-political groups. The full GKG dataset collection of around 40GB is available: http://blog.gdeltproject.org/announcing-the-africa-and-middle-east-global-a… We have also released a new Human Rights GKG, which encodes in quantitative form a cross-section of the world’s public knowledge of human rights issues across the world, scattered across the hundreds of thousands of textual reports, calls to action, alerts, field interviews, and other material published by organizations throughout the globe. This initial GKG encodes over 110,000 documents encoding a number of the major international human rights report archives, offering a computable overview of global human rights issues over the decades: http://blog.gdeltproject.org/announcing-the-new-human-rights-global-knowled… The GDELT GKG format encodes lists of social groups, organizations, locations, major themes, emotions, and a range of other metadata computed from each document, making it possible to conduct a wide array of studies that blend spatial, semantic, citation, and network analyses ( http://blog.gdeltproject.org/introducing-gkg-2-0-the-next-generation-of-the… ). We're very much looking forward to seeing what you all are able to do with these new GKG collections! For more information on the GDELT Project more broadly, see the main site (http://www.gdeltproject.org/) or the blog ( http://blog.gdeltproject.org/) ~Kalev

New anthology: Everyday Feminist Research Praxis
by Leurs, K.H.A. (Koen) 23 Sep '14

23 Sep '14

Apologies for cross-posting dear colleagues. I'm excited to announce the publication of the following anthology edited by Domitilla Olivieri (Utrecht University, Netherlands) and Koen Leurs (LSE, UK) EVERYDAY FEMINIST RESEARCH PRAXIS. Doing Gender in the Netherlands Everyday Feminist Research Praxis: Doing Gender in The Netherlands offers a selection of previously unpublished work presented during the 2011, 2012 and 2013 Netherlands Research School of Gender Studies (NOG) conferences. Reflecting the wide spectrum of interdisciplinary gender studies, this volume is organised into four sections along four conceptual knots. These thematic entry-points are space/time, affectivity, public/private, and technological mediation. The central emphasis of this volume is twofold: first, the everyday is approached as a concretely grounded site of micro-political power struggles. Second, the contributors make explicit connections between theory and their everyday feminist research practices. They provide a reflexive account of their research, and put into words what drives them. The relation between theory and practice has been a key concern of feminist research in recent decades. The two domains are here not considered as oppositional, but rather contributors chart their interconnections and entanglements. The authors cover a wide topical area that includes, amongst others, digital representations of women movements; European homonationalism; fashion modelling and labour; sexual identities; child-birthing discourses; digital documentaries; fan fiction; and the post-human. As a whole, the interventions show how feminist research praxis remains crucial in critically disentangling naturalized routines of daily life, which in turn enables the scrutiny of, for example, the arbitrariness of entrenched power relations and the revealing of contradictory and layered, personal and collective, everyday trajectories. Everyday feminist research praxis, thus, energises possibilities for new forms of recognition, representation and redistribution of power. HARDBACK ISBN-13: 978-1-4438-6011-6 ISBN-10: 1-4438-6011-5 Date of Publication: 01/08/2014 MORE INFORMATION: http://www.cambridgescholars.com/everyday-feminist-research-praxis SAMPLE CHAPTER: INTRODUCTION AVAILABLE FOR FREE IN PDF FORMAT: http://www.cambridgescholars.com/download/sample/61775 REVIEWS: “A significant contribution to the field, this rich interdisciplinary collection shows the timely importance of feminist scholarship today. It provides the exhilarating scope, theoretical vigor and state-of-the-art scholarship I connect with feminist scholars that traverse Dutch Gender Studies. The overall result provides original takes on topics at the core of present feminist debates – from which scholars and students in many interdisciplinary humanities and social science disciplines will learn immensely. There is of course a risk in reading it; nothing about your everyday life will ever appear mundane again.” —Cecilia Åsberg, Associate Professor of Gender Studies (Tema Genus), Linköping University; Founding Director, The Posthumanities Hub; Co-Director, GEXcel International Collegium “This lively volume will come as a breath of fresh air to readers of many different feminist persuasions in many different parts of the world. Rigorously non-universalizing, the authors revel in the irreducible diversity of the micro politics of gender at sites that range from transnational library projects to online porn sites, from Mandarin-speaking mothers in the Netherlands to a struggle over gay marriage that leaves the nominative “Europe” in a legal shambles. Modeling rich intergenerational as well as transnational and interdisciplinary intra-actions, the essays evoke a universe of new possibilities for feminist exploration. The conversation among pioneering feminist scholars of my own generation that comprises the Epilogue moved me deeply and gives all that comes before it an astonishing depth of field.” —Prof. Marguerite Waller, Chair, Department of Gender and Sexuality Studies, University of California, Riverside TABLE OF CONTENTS: SECTION I: NEGOTIATING SPACE-TIME Preface section 1: Negotiating Space-Time Louis van den Hengel 1. Call for submissions for the annual Screening Scholarship Media Festival now open! #SSMF2015
by Corrina Laughlin 22 Sep '14

22 Sep '14

Hello internet researchers! Submissions are open for the 3rd annual Screening Scholarship Media Festival (#SSMF2015) from now until November 10th. SSMF brings together mediamakers, artists, activists and scholars for two days of screenings and discussions at the University of Pennsylvania. We hope to gather a wide range of films, soundscapes and recordings, e-books, animation, installations and other media forms for a stimulating festival. This year’s theme is “performing the digital”. See the call for submissions attached and below. Please circulate widely! [https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/2eXjB_BFQaqHoccQYw2pIN9CL3ZZ08cAtXQuFwM-d…] THE THIRD ANNUAL SCREENING SCHOLARSHIP MEDIA FESTIVAL #SSMF2015 March 27 - 28, 2015 University of Pennsylvania Philadelphia, PA This year at the Screening Scholarship Media Festival we invite submissions from scholars, activists, artists, filmmakers, and educators that creatively explore how the social world is performed in and through digital media. Over the last few years, there has been a proliferation of scholarship that looks at media as a vehicle for performing and constituting reality, not merely representing it. With this in mind we ask: What are the ethics and politics of (re)presenting our work on screen? How do multiple lives -- digital, analog, physical -- connect and disconnect through on and offline pathways? What does it mean to be a scholar, artist, and/or educator in the digital age? What are the affordances and tensions of digital media for scholarship, activism, and pedagogy? SSMF will highlight multimodal projects during two days of screenings and discussions showcasing film, soundscapes and recordings, blogs, websites, eBooks, animation, photographs, installations, and other media forms. Online Submissions Open September 22, 2014 Deadline for Submissions is November 10 , 2014 Please visit our website <http://www.camrapenn.org> for the submission guidelines and more information about the festival. camra is also recruiting graduate students and scholars to serve as reviewers for SSMF 2015. If you are interested in serving as a peer reviewer for SSMF, please contact SSMF(a)camrapenn.org. camra asks questions about the affordances, challenges, and possibilities of multimodal scholarship in teaching, learning, mediamaking, and knowledge production. Our aim is to support media-based research and pedagogies, with an explicit focus on: (1) establishing responsive and practical guidelines for the evaluation of multimodal research and scholarship; (2) utilizing participatory, digital, and ethnographic methodologies; (3) creating supportive spaces (both digital and physical) for multimodal work to be showcased; (4) critically examining how technology is changing the processes, relationships and products related to teaching and learning.

2015 SWPACA Conference CFP- Computer Culture Area
by natasha chuk 22 Sep '14

22 Sep '14

*Call for Papers: Computer Culture Area* 36th Annual Southwest Popular / American Culture Association Conference February 11-14, 2015 Hyatt Regency, Albuquerque, NM www.southwestpca.org PROPOSAL SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Saturday, November 1, 2014 Proposals for papers are now being accepted for the area of Computer Culture, as one of the many areas within the 36th annual conference of the Southwest Popular/American Culture Association (SWPACA). Please consider submitting. This year’s conference theme is: Many Faces, Many Voices: Intersecting Borders in Popular and American Culture COMPUTER is broadly defined as any computational device, whether smartphone or abacus, and any form of information technology, including the origins of concepts of interactive text which may predate computational devices as traditionally conceived. CULTURE is rooted in the concept of cultural meaning. We ask not just operational questions such as, "How do people communicate using computers?" but questions of meaning such as, "What does it mean when people communicate using computers instead of using pre-computer approaches to communication?" Along these lines, we are interested in communication as well as creative practices/applications and how computer technologies shape them. "Computer Culture" can be understood in a variety of ways: - the culture of the computer, that is, as computers interact with each other, what culture do they have of their own? - the culture around the computer, that is, (sub)cultures associated with the production, maintenance, use, and destruction of computers - the culture through the computer, that is, explicit treatment of how computer mediation influences cultural phenomena that exist or has existed in forms that did not involve computer mediation, and what these influences mean - the culture by the computer, that is, the ways in which new (sub)cultures or (sub)cultural phenomena have arisen because of computers and understandings of these given awareness of the nature and/or workings of computers Example questions associated with Computer Culture would include, but not be limited to: - What implications are there because of the powerfulness of (computer/information) technology; and are these implications beneficial, detrimental, inevitable, or avoidable? - What are the cultural origins of computers, computer/information technologies, and practices associated with them? What is the descriptive and prescriptive outlook for the conditions of those cultural forces associated with those cultural origins? - How do cultural forces (such as changes from one generation to the next, trends in education or society, or other cultural phenomena) impact (and are impacted by) computer/information technologies/market-forces, and what do these impacts (in either direction or both) mean? Paper topics might include (but are not limited to) those that address: - issues of (re)presentation through computers (website analysis and design), - methods of discourse involving computers (blogging, Twitter, social networks, viral video, live feeds), - theories focused on the relationship between computers and culture, uses of computers in particular contexts and the impacts thereof (computers and pedagogy, online literary journals, etc.), - the relationship between computers and cultural forces (such as news, politics, and terrorism), - security/privacy/fraud/surveillance and computers (online security issues, spam, scams, and hoaxes), - creative practice, web art, generative and digital art, virtual performance, - the self, the “second self,” identity formation/negotiation, anonymity - “cyberkids,” internet youth cultures - data visualization and digital geographies - hashtag thinking, communities, data organization and archives While we will consider any relevant paper, we have a preference for those that involve transferable methodological approaches. This is an interdisciplinary conference, and other conference attendees would benefit from being able to adapt your research methods to their future research. Scholars, teachers, professionals, artists, and others interested in computer culture are encouraged to participate. Graduate students are also particularly welcome with award opportunities for the best graduate papers. More information about awards can be found at http://southwestpca.org/conference/graduate-student-awards/ Specifically, we would like to highlight the following award opportunities: - The "Computer Culture and Game Studies Award" - The "Heldrich-Dvorak Travel Fellowships" Given how papers may often fall into multiple categories, there may be other award opportunities listed at http://southwestpca.org/conference/graduate-student-awards/ which would be appropriate for your paper. (However, each presenter may only apply for one – not including the Travel Fellowships, which can be in addition.) If you wish to form your own panel, we would be glad to facilitate your needs. This conference is a presentation opportunity. Visit http://journaldialogue.org <http://www.journaldialogue.org/> for information about the organization's new, peer-reviewed journal, Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy. Please pass along this call to friends and colleagues. For consideration, submit 100-200 word abstracts and proposals for panels before Saturday, November 1, 2014 to the conference’s electronic submission system which can be found at: http://conference2015.southwestpca.org/
