Reminder: Deadline Sept 30 - CFP: Special Issue of First Monday on Technology Non-use
by Eric P. S. Baumer 26 Sep '14

26 Sep '14

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Extended Abstracts Due *September 30* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Across the numerous disciplines that investigate the relationships between humans and technology, most research focuses on technology use and technology users. User studies, usability metrics, techno-determinism, socio-determinism, user-centered design, participatory design, end user programming, user appropriation, technology adoption, diffusion of innovations, technology and development: such research overwhelmingly focuses on people using technology. We seek to problematize this focus by turning our attention to situations in which a particular individual or group of individuals are unable or choose not to use some specific technology or technological system. Focusing explicitly on non-use can function as a dialectic maneuver, an inversion that provides a novel perspective on, and potentially fuller understanding of, the complex, multifaceted relations among society and technology. We seek to explore these relationships and their broad ramifications rather than simply to transform non-users into users. Studying non-use in its many forms can highlight sociotechnical configurations that may be overlooked due to a singular focus on technology use. To this end, we seek submissions from a broad array of disciplines representing a diverse collection of methodological approaches to the topic of technology non-use. Studying non-use may require novel empirical investigations, methodological approaches, conceptual tools, and theoretical developments. Many and varied technologies may be relevant to consider: digital and analog, modern and ancient, computational and mechanical, popular and obscure, etc. Through this special issue, we also seek to avoid reifying a binary distinction between use and non-use. The point is not to draw ever clearer lines that help us understand what distinguishes non-use(rs) from use(rs). Rather, this special issue aims to explore the complex sociotechnical situations where various forms and degrees of non-use arise. We hope to provide a foundational repository for the topic of non-use through which scholars from many diverse fields can be in conversation with one another. Topics for submissions might include: - case studies of unique or notable instances of non-use - conspicuous or performative non-use - development, ICT4D, and the “digital imperative” - digital divide(s) and/or disenfranchisement - diverse reasons for or causes of non-use (or use): choice, compulsion, structural limitation, etc. - identity management - media and/or technology refusal - methodological innovations for studying non-use - organizational or institutional contexts - partial or situational non-use - social, political, or cultural dimensions of non-use - surveillance avoidance - modifications of existing theories or new theoretical contributions - typologies, taxonomies, categories, or degrees of non-use (and/or use) - any other topics that can be a touchstone for scholars interested in non-use Timeline: - Extended Abstracts Due - *September 30* - Feedback from Editors on Abstracts - October 31 - Full Submissions Due - January 15, 2015 - Issue Appears - August 3, 2015 Authors are requested to submit an extended abstract of 400-500 words to nonuse2014[at]gmail[dot]com. Selected authors will be invited to submit a full paper for the special issue and will receive feedback to help craft final submissions. Editors: Eric P. S. Baumer Morgan G. Ames Jed R. Social Networking on the Dark Web
by Robert W. Gehl 25 Sep '14
25 Sep '14
Hi, all -- While we're on the topic of alternative social media sites such as Ello, I thought I'd bring a new article of mine to the list's attention. It's called "Power/freedom on the dark web: a digital ethnography of the Dark Web Social Network." It will be published in New Media and Society, and you can see an advance version here: http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2498629 The article explores a social network that is only accessible through Tor. Despite this, the site has grown quite a bit in the past year, with many privacy-conscious members signing up on this non-commercial, anti-surveillance social networking site. Experience as Evidence? Symposium - Registration closing Sun, Sept 28
by Fadhila Mazanderani 25 Sep '14
25 Sep '14
Apologies for cross-posting. This is a reminder for anyone interested in this event: registration closes SUNDAY, the 28th of September. ---- EXPERIENCE AS EVIDENCE? A Symposium on the Sciences of Subjectivity in Healthcare, Policy and Practice St Hugh’s College, Oxford 13-14 October 2014 ‘Experience’ has long been referenced as a valuable, if ‘subjective’, resource in a variety of fields. Especially in healthcare, highly personal, embodied understandings of illness have been studied as an alternative to ‘objective’ biomedical knowledge and are often used to critique biomedical reductionism. In the wake of this critique, as well as burgeoning patient activism and health consumerism, over the last fifty years an industry has emerged that aims to capture, process and distribute the patient ‘experience’. This raises a number of questions about the nature of the knowledge generated by these ‘technologies of experience’: – What does it take to turn experience into evidence? What new methods and expertise are emerging in this field? – What promises, pitfalls and politics come with these approaches? – And what are the implications for research, policy and practice? The symposium brings together a multidisciplinary group of leading scholars and practitioners to discuss these and related questions, critically engaging with how the concept of ‘experience’ is articulated, studied, and developed within medical sociology, science and technology studies (STS), health services research, healthcare policy and practice. Speakers include: Samantha Adams, Madeleine Akrich, Havi Carel, Trisha Greenhalgh, Tiago Moreira, Jeannette Pols, Vololona Rabeharisoa, Glenn Robert, Tanja Schneider, Paul Wicks, Alex Wilkie, Kaiton Williams. For more information and registration, see: http://experience-as-evidence.org/ Organizing committee: Angela Martin, Fadhila Mazanderani, Louise Locock, John Powell, Steve Woolgar, Sue Ziebland, Malte Ziewitz Hosted by the University of Oxford’s Health Experiences Research Group (HERG) and made possible with the support of NIHR, the Foundation for the Sociology of Health and Illness and the Wellcome Trust. http://experience-as-evidence.org
CFP: A Safe Refuge? Minorities and the State in Iranian Cyberspace
by Vit Sisler 25 Sep '14
25 Sep '14
A Safe Refuge? Minorities and the State in Iranian Cyberspace Call for Papers CyberOrient: Online Journal of the Virtual Middle East Editor-in-Chief: Daniel Martin Varisco Guest Editor: Bronwen Robertson and James Marchant Submission deadline: 30 April 2015 (Full Papers) Aim The Iranian state has consistently restricted spaces for minorities to express their identities, especially where such identities are construed as representing a threat to the religious, political and sexual orthodoxies promulgated by the clerical establishment. As a result, many members of assorted Iranian minority groups have taken to cyberspace to build communities, articulate self- and group-identities, organise to overcome discriminatory practices, and connect with their allies from across national borders and around the world. With the election of Hassan Rouhani to the presidency there have been renewed hopes for an improvement in the position of Iran’s minorities, though tangible improvements have been slow to materialise. Whilst the state is slow to take steps that would improve the position of Iran’s minorities, it is ultimately down to these communities to organise and find solutions to their myriad concerns. This special issue of CyberOrient invites contributors to explore how Iranian minority groups have embraced technology to overcome state marginalization, strengthen communities, and push back against entrenched societal prejudices. Topics might include the role of online networks in community formation; the impact of state filtering programmes upon minorities; the effectiveness of phone apps in providing communities with support and education; the extent of access to communications technology by minority communities; and the capacity for diaspora organisations and communities to affect the position of Iranian minorities. About CyberOrient CyberOrient (http://www.cyberorient.net/) is a peer-reviewed journal published by the American Anthropological Association, in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague. The aim of the journal is to provide research and theoretical considerations on the representation of Islam and the Middle East, the very areas that used to be styled as an “Orient”, in cyberspace, as well as the impact of the internet and new media in Muslim and Middle Eastern contexts. Submission Articles should be submitted directly to Bronwen Robertson (bronwen(a)smallmedia.org.uk) James Marchant (james(a)smallmedia.org.uk) and Vit Sisler (vit.sisler(a)ff.cuni.cz) Articles should be between 6,000 and 8,000 words (including references), and follow the AAA style in referencing and citations. Upon acceptance, articles will be published online with free access in Fall 2015. CAMRI Seminar Oct 1: Jenny Chan - Dying for an iPhone: The Labour Struggle of China’s New Working Class
by Christian Fuchs 25 Sep '14
Dying for an iPhone: The Labour Struggle of China’s New Working Class Jenny Chan CAMRI Research Seminar Wednesday, October 1, 2014 University of Westminster Harrow Campus, 14:00-16:00 Room A7.01 Attendance: register per e-mail to christian.fuchs(a)uti.at until Monday, Sep 30, 20:00 http://www.westminster.ac.uk/camri/research-seminars/dying-for-an-iphone-th… CAMRI Research Seminars – Autumn 2014 programme: http://www.westminster.ac.uk/camri/research-seminars This sociological research analyzes the ways in which the integration of the electronics manufacturing industry in global supply chains has intensified labour conflicts and class antagonism. The Taiwanese transnational corporation Foxconn Technology Group holds more than 50 percent of market share in global electronics manufacturing. Its 1.4 million employees in China far exceed its combined workforce in 28 other countries that comprise its global empire. I assess the conditions of a new generation of Chinese workers on the basis of the intertwined policies and practices of Foxconn, international brands (notably Apple), and the local government, as well as the diverse forms of collective actions workers deploy to defend their rights and interests. Within the tight delivery deadlines, some Foxconn workers leveraged their power to disrupt production to demand higher pay and better conditions. While all of these labor struggles were short-lived and limited in scope to a single factory, protestors exposed the injustice of “iSlavery,” garnering wide media attention and civil society support. Contradictions of state-labor-capital relations, however, remain sharp. In the authoritarian regime, notwithstanding the resilience of the Chinese state in the face of sustained popular unrest over the last two decades, my ethnographic study highlights the unstable nature of precarious labor in its hundreds of millions. Jenny Chan was Chief Coordinator of SACOM (Students and Scholars Against Corporate Misbehavior) http://sacom.hk/ between 2006 and 2009. Educated at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Hong Kong, she went on to pursue her doctorate in sociology and labour studies as a Reid Research Scholar at University of London. She was awarded the Great Britain-China Educational Trust for dissertation writing (PhD diss. 2014). On September 1 2014 she joined the University of Oxford as Departmental Lecturer in Contemporary Chinese Studies, the School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies. Her recent articles have appeared in Current Sociology, Modern China, The Asia-Pacific Journal, The South Atlantic Quarterly, Global Labour Journal, New Labor Forum, Labor Notes, New Internationalist and New Technology, Work and Employment. http://www.ccsp.ox.ac.uk/dr-jenny-chan
For example, the TV industry was faced with tremendous change in technologies during the past decade, such as the digital switchover, the introduction of HDTV, or the provision of 3D content. Large scale asset repositories and different workflows in the content production process had to be introduced. Other media industries faced similar challenges, as the emergence of digital publishing, digital content distribution, or advancement of in-house customer relationship management infrastructures, and the digitalization of workflows. This change towards digital implies a more holistic view of information systems and management in media industries to provide optimal system solutions, and eventually cut costs. Where other industries are well researched in terms of their IT system solutions, in media industries the discussion around content repositories, media management solutions, and digital workflows seems to be predominant. Within the context of this publication, a more holistic view towards information systems and management in media industries shall be introduced, and emphasize the importance of research of business information management and systems in media industries. The media and entertainment industry is the third largest industry segment for investments in information systems. And this particular industry segment is faced with tremendous challenges in terms of organizational, transformational, leadership, customer behaviour, and technological changes. One particular challenge is the transformation of the analogue media world into its digital counterpart. As of today, the successive research of business information management and systems focusing on media and entertainment industries is rather fragmented and stretches over a wide area of research islands such as social media, eCommerce, or eBusiness. To face this challenge, this book focuses on information management and systems for media and entertainment industries and highlighting their particular needs in production, distribution, and consumption. The book shall gather a scientific community around the theme of business information management and systems in the larger context of media and entertainment industries. Special Focus on the Notion NEW approaches of Content and Media in Information Systems & Management Applications in Particular in Application Areas as: Big Data, Crowd, Open Data, Linked Data, Cloud Application, New Business Analytics, Information Visualization, Workflow Management, and Global Digital Production Pipelines. =============================================================================================================== Topics of Interest =============================================================================================================== =============================================================================================================== Management, Marketing, Business Aspects and Strategic Importance of IT and IS&M in Creative eMedia Industries =============================================================================================================== o IS as basis of new business models/new media products o business process modelling o customer intelligence either in real-time / non-real-time o enterprise systems and project management o subscriber management & marketing o business model innovations and analytics o personalized and individualized offerings to increase consumer loyalty o increase revenue from intellectual property (IP) rights and royalties o financial performance management o marketing and targeted marketing for media services and consumer feedback management o subscriber management & marketing o target niche groups and create new revenue streams o increase revenue from intellectual property (IP) rights and royalties o financial performance management =============================================================================================================== Consumer, Audience, Human-Computer-Interaction, and User Viewpoints =============================================================================================================== * perception of media content in systems * understanding audiences, advertisement statistics, audience trends, and audience preferences * social media analysis and marketing * collaborative productions * customer intelligence either in real-time / non- real-time * marketing and targeted marketing for media services and consumer feedback management * target niche groups and create new revenue streams * personalized and individualized offerings to increase consumer loyalty * the behavioural, cognitive, motivational and affective aspects of human and technology interaction in media and content production * digital documents/genres; human information seeking and web navigation behaviours; human information interaction; information visualization in media industries * behavioural information security and information assurance; privacy and trust in human technology interaction * user interface design and evaluation for various applications in business, managerial, organizational domains in media * integrated and/or innovative approaches, guidelines, and standards or metrics for human centred analysis, design, construction, evaluation, and use of interactive devices and information systems * information systems usability engineering; universal usability * the impact of interfaces/information technology on people's attitude, behaviour, performance, perception, and productivity * the elderly, the young, and special needs populations for new applications, modalities, and multimedia interaction in content/media industry * user-centred/participatory/informed design and evaluation for different types of applications in a variety of contexts in the media and content industries. =============================================================================================================== Technology Perspective of the Usage of Media in IS&M in Media Industry and the Application of Media in IS&M across Domains: Technology, Processes, Workflows, Infrastructures and Global Production Pipelines =============================================================================================================== o digital content End-to-End o data warehousing; digital archiving & asset management o data warehousing o digital archiving & asset management o digital workflows and workflow management o workflow management applications o process automation o IT supporting new services: cloud, big data, crowd, linked data, and open data o Decision making systems using media content o ?
