Interestingly, however, they also prominently share the core transformations experienced in contemporary capitalism. The convergence of work, labour and other aspects of life -- the rapid development of algorithmically driven technical systems and their intensifying role in social organisation -- the practical and legitimation crisis of institutions, echoed by renewed attempts at self-organisation. Each article in this special issue addresses a received truth which circulates unreflected amongst both academics analysing these phenomena and practitioners engaged in the respective scenes. Questioning such myths based on empirical research founded on a rigorous theoretical framework is what a journal such as the Journal of Peer Production can contribute to both academic and activist discourses. Shared machine shops have been around for at least a decade or so, which makes for a good time to evaluate how they live up to their self-professed social missions. Call for expressions of interest PhD Scholarship - Disability on Television: Access, representation and reception Department of Internet Studies Curtin University is looking for an outstanding scholar for a full-time PhD scholarship to work on a large-scale study of disability and television. The study aims to assess the mutually important areas of accessibility and representation to explore the importance of digital televisions to the social inclusion of Australians with disability. Using an innovative multimodal research programme the project leverages participatory media to gain new user centred insights. The project will also offer insights regarding newer forms of television through a usability analysis of the range of web-capable devices that can be used to access TV to discover whether they are more or less enabling for people across a diverse range of disabilities. The successful applicant will be a full team member of an Australian Research Council grant that asks, 'How does digital television create a social space for people with disability, when impairment makes watching television challenging and social stigma against disability is perpetuated through representation?' Possible areas of research include: * Television's transition to the internet and the implications for people with disability * Television accessibility * The representation of disability on contemporary forms of television such as online streaming platforms * The representation of disability (and audience response to it) on contemporary drama such as Game of Thrones * The intersections between television representation and online discussion * Employment of people with disabilities in television industries The successful applicant will work with Dr Katie Ellis. Applicants with disciplinary backgrounds in media studies, disability studies, communications or the digital humanities are encouraged to apply. The award is to commence in 2015. The migrant populations keep some of their original cultures with them that influence their communication about health outcomes. Meanwhile, migrant populations are constantly exposed to and adopting cultural values and practices in their host countries or regions, which gradually alter their health related communication and behaviors. On the one hand, migrants' health communication and behaviors have become an important social topic in many countries especially in North America and some European countries with a relatively long history of having immigrants from other countries. On the other hand, in countries like China, urbanization accelerates migration within the country, primarily with economically and socially disadvantaged population migrating from rural to urban areas. Both international and internal migration bring new challenges to public health systems. Our edited book aims to critically review theoretical frameworks and literature, as well as discuss new practices and lessons related to culture, migration, and health communication in different countries. Scope and Recommended Topics: We invite chapters that critically review the strengths and limitations of widely applied theoretical frameworks such as assimilation, acculturation, cultural adaptation, culture-centered approach, cultural safety, cultural competency, and intercultural sensitivity. The review of those theoretical frameworks should be embedded in public health and health communication contexts. Taking a communication perspective, this edited book will examine how differences among different cultural communities relate to health communication at interpersonal, group, and societal levels. We are interested but not limited to chapters on the following topics: * Health communication disparities among immigrant groups * Health information diffusion among migrant groups * Social support and migrant groups' health communication This edited book will also discuss how content and format of media in combination with other social factors such as social capital and social networks influence individuals' health beliefs and behaviors. For instance, we are interested in receiving book chapters on the following topics: * Comprehensive literature on media effects on migrants' health behaviors * Media coverage and public discourse on migrants' health * Media campaigns and migrant population Health communication is always situated in certain social, political, historical, and cultural contexts. This book addresses a few important contextual factors that practitioners and researchers need to be aware of in research, practice, and policy making. As such we also solicit stimulating health communication cases on immigrants' health to be included with in-depth analysis of their unique contexts. Target Audience: The target audience for this book will consist of upper-level undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty members and practitioners in both communication studies and health sciences, as well as their respective allied fields such as media studies, telecommunications, journalism, sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, medical science, nursing, public health, psychology/psychiatry, and medical informatics. In addition to speaking to an academic audience, authors are encouraged to write so as to provide valuable information and resources to practitioners, administrators, and policy makers working in the health sector. Specialists in communication play an important, albeit often hidden, role in these processes. Translators and other international professional communicators operate as mediators to facilitate understanding across global, international, national and local contexts through diverse communication channels. Translating today often involves several agents with different roles, responsibilities and skills. This entails creative work, various innovative procedures, and collaborative networks in highly technological, distributed environments. All these agents can be seen as text producers with an increasing expertise in the tools and skills of their trades to find, manage, process, and adapt information to target audiences. Despite disperse attempts at acknowledging the importance of approaching professional communication as translation or as involving translation-related skills (e.g., Hoft 1995; Weiss 1995, 1997; Melton 2008), translation often remains invisible both in the literature and in the training of (international) professional communicators. The extant literature in Communication Studies that actually addresses translation usually tends to emphasize, and concentrate on, localization issues, and it often draws from functional approaches to translation as production of a communicative message or instrument (e.g., Vermeer 1996; Nord 1997; Reiss 2000). In Translation Studies, on the other hand, there is an increasing awareness of the need to tend bridges to Communication Studies in research (e.g., Risku 2010; Ehrensberger-Dow & Daniel 2013). However, more dialogue seems necessary to fully grasp the implications and commonalities in all areas of multilingual professional communication, not the least that they are usually ascribed peripheral roles in business, technical, and scientific endeavors. The emerging figure of the multitasked professional communicator has brought translation as part of the document production process to a different level of discussion. It is drawing increasing attention to translators’ profiles and training as competent communicators and vice versa, thus showing that the role translation plays in international professional communication, and the role of international professional communication in translator training cannot be downplayed (Gnecchi et al., 2011). This issue of the *conne**x**ions *journal seeks to build bridges of cross-disciplinary understanding between international professional communication scholars and practitioners and translation scholars and practitioners. It aims to foster debate around the *role of translation as a special kind of international professional communication and also as an integral part of other (international) professional communication instances* . *Inaugural “Sports, Communication, and Technology Summit” hosted by the Marist College Center for Sports Communication* Saturday, March 28, 2015 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Location: Marist College The Marist College Center for Sports Communication is pleased to announce its first Summit on Sports, Communication, and Technology. This day-long event will bring together undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, practitioners, and industry leaders for a robust discussion of and unique skill training in the broadly defined domain of sports communication technology – from video and audio production to sports apps to wearable computing technology at live events. While this event is focused on unique experiences for undergraduate students, there will be important learning endeavors for faculty, graduate students, and those working in the field. We encourage registration and involvement from all groups. The event is open to all those from various and divergent fields with an interest in this topic. To encourage participation, registration is set at $35 for all participants, which goes towards offsetting event costs. The summit will consist of the following events: *Undergraduate Case Study Competition* Student groups of up to six will present a solution to a case that will be assigned approximately two months in advance of the event (the beginning of the spring semester). This case will ask students to solve a problem/quandary in sports using communication technology. The solution can come in a variety of forms: a concept or research paper, a campaign, software, an app, or any other format that best provides a solution to the presented problem. At the symposium, students groups will give a ten minute presentation to the audience and panel of judges on their solution. At the conclusion of group presentations, judges will ask questions to participants. Awards will be given to the winning three groups. More information about the case, including specific guidelines and rules, will be given to teams upon registration and the assignment of the project. *Panel Discussion* The symposium will feature a panel of leading professionals, innovators, and scholars in a discussion of a vital topic in the sports, communication, and technology space. Attendees will be able to ask questions of the panelists after the presentation. This year’s panel will focus on communication technology for the in-arena experience. The panel will focus on ways interactive technology , from smart devices to video boards, have enriched fan experiences at live sporting events and ways that sport producers are enhancing these technologies to keep up with/surpass the at-home viewing experience. Panelists will address successes, challenges, and possible future evolution. *Lunch and Keynote Speaker* Lunch will be provided for all registered attendees. A keynote speaker (to be named) will address the assembly during the lunch period. Additionally, Marist College Center for Sports Communication faculty will discuss the Center’s research agenda in and highlight their student/faculty research collaborations. *Hands-on Tutorials* In 45-minute sessions, professors and practitioners will provide tutorials on relevant sports communication technology. These sessions will offer attendees hands-on experience in some form of sports communication technology, particularly ones that might fall outside of traditional classroom instruction. Sessions will fall into one of the following categories, all as pertinent to sport: video/editing application, web development/design, mobile technology, and social media technology. Several sessions will run concurrently, and each will be limited to approximately 20 students per session. There will be three 45-minute sessions, allowing students to try three different tutorials if they wish. There will be a signup page for each session, allowing for students to sign up in advance and plan their afternoon. *Workshops* In these sessions, student groups will be able to workshop projects and concepts with application to sport media and communication. Examples could include web stories, apps, websites, software, digital productions, hardware, and social media productions, among others. Students will receive feedback and assistance from experts such as faculty, industry professionals, and potential users. These workshops will allow for student developers to present their ideas to experts and receive feedback and constructive critique toward improving these products. Student groups must submit a request in advance for these workshops, as there will be limited spots available. *Faculty/Industry Expert Volunteers* There are several opportunities for faculty and industry experts to volunteer for various tasks at the summit. These primarily include tutorial session leader/assistant and workshop panelist. If you have a particular area of expertise in sports, communication, and technology, please contact any of the summit organizers (listed below) to inquire about volunteering. You may also indicate this on the registration form. All assistance is greatly appreciated and will help make for a more robust learning experience for summit attendees. This award recognizes the growth and importance of new academic formats. Award winners will be announced at the PCA/ACA annual convention in New Orleans, LA in 2015 and posted on the PCA/ACA website at http://www.h-net.org/~pcaacca/ and on other appropriate websites, and in other media forums. Recipients need not be present at the conference to receive the award. *Submissions and Nominations Procedures: * The policies and procedures for the Electronic Awards are similar to all the other awards with a focus on quality and relevancy. *Moving Memories. Remembering and Reviving Conflict, Protest and Social Unrest in Connected Times* The one-day seminar explores the role memories play in contemporary political conflicts, protest movements and social unrest that have become increasingly conducted through connective and ubiquitous media. It assembles a rich array of scholarly work and participatory experiences with regard to the impact of past beliefs, tactics and bonds in current times of struggle and rebellion, in terms of remembering past and reviving novel conflicts. It does so with a special focus on the production and circulation of memories for protest via digital technologies, new media and art.
