Call for nominations for the 2013 Social Informatics Best Paper Award The Special Interest Group for Social Informatics (SIG-SI) of the Association for Information Science and Technology and the Rob Kling Center for Social Informatics (RKCSI) are seeking nominations for an award for the best paper published in a peer reviewed journal on a topic informed by social informatics during the 2013 calendar year. The author or authors will present their paper at the 10th Annual SIG-SI Symposium on Saturday, November 1, 2014 and receive a $1,000 cash award at the 2014 Annual Meeting of the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) in Seattle in November, 2014. Nominations letters should be sent to Howard Rosenbaum (hrosenba(a)indiana.edu) or Pnina Fichman (fichman(a)indiana.edu) by August 15, 2014 and must include a full citation, a brief explanation for the nomination, and a copy of the article. Since 2004, established scholars, young researchers and doctoral students interested in the study of people, ICT and work and play have gathered at the SIG-SI ASIS&T Annual Research Symposium to share their work and ideas. Approximately 100 papers, posters and panels have been presented and for the past three years, we have given awards for the best papers published by Social Informatics (SI) faculty and students in the preceding years. This year we gather to celebrate a decade of intellectually challenging and engaging work in SI and hope that you will join us. Our goal remains the same: to disseminate current research and research in progress that investigates the social aspects of information and communication technologies (ICT) across all areas of ASIS&T. Building on the success of past years, the symposium includes members of many SIGs and defines “social” broadly to include critical and historical approaches as well as contemporary social analysis. It also defines “technology” broadly to include traditional technologies (i.e., paper), state-of-the-art computer systems, and mobile and pervasive devices. Submissions may include empirical, critical and theoretical work, as well as richly described practice cases and demonstrations. We are particularly interested in work that assumes a critical stance towards the Symposium’s theme but are also soliciting research on other related social informatics topics. We encourage all scholars interested in social aspects of ICT (broadly defined) to share their research and research in progress by submitting an extended abstract of their work and attending the symposium. Papers that take social informatics further in theoretical conceptualization or empirical grounding are of particular interest to SIG-SI this year as we celebrate a decade of Symposia in ASIS&T. This year’s conference theme is “Connecting Collections, Cultures, and Communities.” In keeping with this theme, the symposium is also soliciting work that focuses on the question of understanding and analyzing connections between social informatics and cognate epistemic cultures and intellectual communities from a social informatics perspective. Some of the questions we ask include: • What are the social and technological forces that enable and constrain connections between SI and cognate intellectual communities? • What are some of the ways in which we can begin to establish and maintain connections among SI and cognate epistemic cultures and intellectual communities? • What can a social informatics approach tell us about the nature of the boundaries among SI and cognate epistemic communities? • What are the challenges and opportunities of engaging in SI work? The schedule for the workshop will involve the presentations of papers and the best social informatics paper awards for 2013 (call to follow). We expect an engaging discussion with lively interactions with the audience. IR15 Travel Grant Applications

In order to increase the diversity of participation in the AoIR annual Internet Research (IR) conferences, the Association of Internet Researchers makes available up to four conference fee waivers and travel stipends per year. This year we will especially favor participation by scholars from the Asia / Pacific region, as well as from South America and Africa. The number of fee waivers and travel stipends will depend first of all upon the ability of the conference budget to sustain such waivers (a judgment to be made by the AoIR Executive Committee upon the advice of the AoIR Treasurer and the local organizing committee) as well as upon the quality of the applications for fee waivers. Applications for fee waivers are invited from student or faculty authors whose paper or panel proposals have already been accepted via the AoIR IR conference reviewing process. All applications should be directed to the President of AoIR (Lori Kendall, prez(a)aoir.org) and must be received by July 31, 2014. Late applications cannot be considered. Applications should be no longer than 2 pages, and must include the following information: 1) A brief description of how the author’s presentation or contribution to the AoIR IR conference will uniquely articulate and/or represent a distinctive perspective (e.g., of persons and/or cultures) otherwise unlikely to be represented at the annual AoIR Internet Research conference. 2) An explanation of the author’s distinctive circumstances that would warrant a fee waiver, and an indication that the applicant will be able to make effective use of the funds. These may include, but are by no means limited to: * exceptionally limited financial resources (e.g., as a graduate student or scholar in a non-OECD country, as a disabled person on a limited income, etc.); * exceptional limits on institutional support otherwise normally available (e.g., travel funds, grant funds, etc.); * other exceptional circumstances that render the usual AoIR IR conference fees an insurmountable obstacle to attending the IR conference in order to present one’s own work. Applicants may also include a letter of support from someone familiar with her / his circumstances, special needs, etc. Such a letter is optional, however, not a requirement. Applications will be reviewed by the AoIR Executive Committee. Fee waivers and travel stipends of up to $500 will be awarded (to be paid out after the conference) on the basis of the Executive Committee’s collective judgment as to which presentations will make the most distinctive contribution to the AoIR IR conference. In order to respect and protect the privacy of the applicants, all Executive Committee discussions and deliberations will be held in strict confidence. The AoIR Executive Committee regretfully acknowledges that there may be more fully meritorious applications than we will be able to award and support. Nonetheless, we hope that awarded fee waivers and travel stipends will not only assist deserving scholars and researchers, but also thereby enrich the IR 15.0 conference in important new ways. However, establishing and integrating crowd-based systems into organizations is still an open question. The systems and the collaborative processes they enable appear diametrically in dissonance with the norms and culture of collaboration and knowledge sharing in traditional organizations. They require mechanisms for articulation of work, coordination, cooperation, and knowledge co-creation that are fundamentally different from those in current groupwork systems and processes. This workshop will bring together researchers investigating issues related to crowdsourcing, social computing and collaborative technologies, organizational science, and workplace research, work in industry, government and voluntary sectors, to discuss the future of groupwork systems in the era of crowdwork. We invite position papers that seek to address the following questions that are of interest to the workshop: What is the future of groupwork systems in the era of crowdwork? How do emerging trends in crowdwork, such as organizational collaboration with an undefined network of people, affect how we conceptualize groupwork? What are the implications for the design of groupwork systems? How can groupwork research contribute to crowdwork research? What can be learned from the success stories and failures of groupwork systems of more than two decades to inform the design of effective organizational crowdwork systems? Can the research and design principles of traditional groupware, workflow systems, and CSCW applications be extended to support organizational collaborative work with the crowd? How can collaboration “in the crowd” be motivated and sustained, while promoting openness and mutual knowledge co-creation, safeguarding organizational intellectual capital, and ensuring maximum job satisfaction and career growth for the crowd worker? What are the underlying ideology and principles in the socio-technical architectures of tools for supporting collaboration and knowledge sharing? They are the perfect environments for providing users with highly contextualized data-driven services and data-driven visual and additive content. To build such ambient media environments, semantics play an essential role to deal with a seamless integration of the urban context as well as the digital services to be provided. The application areas range from smart cars, urban informatics, smart homes, ambient assisted living, smart media environments, and new interaction devices. We aim to bring together communities involved in different semantic applications needed for the creation of ambient media environments, like: digital services, media interoperability, open data, user interfaces, human-computer interaction, user-centred and interaction design, user experience, business modelling, knowledge management, etc. This will allow identifying common themes between the participant's current work and research agenda, and, eventually, leading to the discovery of new insights and opportunities. The primary research goal is to assess new trends for applying semantics in digital services for urban contexts and the disciplines involved in the creation of these services. The workshop organizers have extensive experiences in organizing high level workshops through the non-profit International Ambient Media Association (AMEA) they founded. We expect approx. 15-25 attendees to allow a reasonable number of working groups (see Section 4 ?Workshop Format?). 4 Workshop Format and Activities ============================================================================== The workshop is part of a larger set of initiatives and is supported and incorporated with: * iAMEA ? International Association of Ambient Media Ry (www.ambientmediaassociation.org) * the Association of Information Systems (AIS) Special Interest Group (SIG) SIG-eMedia (aisnet.org/group/SIG-eMedia) * iAMEA established an open access journal and series (indexed in Scopus, and within the Finnish publication ranking system) o International Journal on Information Systems and Management in Creative eMedia o International Series on Information Systems and Management in Creative eMedia The workshop will be a full-day workshop grouped into several sessions. We allow the submission of papers up to 10 pages which will be peer-reviewed by members of the program committee. We expect a submission volume of 30 papers, with an approximate acceptance rate of 40%. The workshop will start with a keynote talk followed by short presentations of the papers. Afterwards in a ?Theme Matching? phase common topics will be identified as a starting point for the sub-sequent group work. The workshop participants will be clustered into groups around the identified topics. In an intense exchange phase within the groups, the topics will be further developed. The workshop ends with final presentations by the groups. The format of the workshop intends to open new perspectives to each participant's individual research work, as well as to assess common problems and trends in the design of urban media environments. After the workshop, it is planned that the results of the group work are consolidated in a journal paper to be published in the special issue of the Springer journal on ?Multimedia Tools and Applications?. Also the authors of the best accepted papers of SAME workshop will be invited to submit extended versions of their papers to the special issue.
