help with Facebook analysis - research project social movement organizations

Dear all, I head a research project on the Internet and social movement activism. More specifically, we are doing a research on the uses of different Internet platforms by the student movement in Chile. We are currently setting up the project webpage, and as soon as it is ready I will let you know, so those of you who might be interested can access more detailed information on the project, including preliminary results. One of the main goals of our project is to analyze how the uses of these platforms have changed through time, more specifically between the beginning of 2011 and the end of 2013. We are also interested in understanding the differences in uses of the various social network sites (for deliberation, information sharing, protest coordination, etc.), and in better understanding their impacts on the relationship between the leadership and the students in general. The reason for this message is that we are struggling to define a research strategy to gather Facebook data (fanpages, groups and events). So far we have been able to do social network analysis with Twitter data, and we have also been looking into YouTube and the use of webpages and blogs. We are also beginning to do content analysis with posts (using Nvivo). About Facebook, we are wondering if any of you have had experience using netvizz. We want to get data on how well connected the fanpages of the students´ organizations are among themselves, and other types of social network data. However, netvizz limits the access to the past 999 posts, which is a serious limitation to us, because, as explained above, we are interested in going back to 2011. Would you know of other options, besides netvizz? Any other tips? I am very grateful for your help! The world’s population is rapidly urbanizing. By 2005, the world’s population had increased to 6.5 billion, with about 50% living in cities. By 2025, UN projections show that the world population is expected to exceed 9 billion with roughly 75% expected to live in cities. This rapid urbanization is continuing to put tremendous pressure on traditional urban infrastructures, such as roads, water, and energy, and on societal institutions. This urbanization challenges require new approaches that will transform modern cities to comfortable, economically successful, and environmentally responsible habitats. We are also seeing a rapid rise in the connection and usage of billions of low-end and affordable smart devices to the Internet, i.e. the Internet of Things, and witnessing the expansion of the Web into more areas of our personal lives. These trends make possible a new generation of smart city applications and services, with new smart city applications emerging as more data from different sources (e.g. from utility services, transport services, environmental data, and from social sensing) become available. These smart city data are large in volume, multi-modal, vary in quality, formats, and representation forms. These data need to be processed, aggregated, and higher-level abstractions need to be created from these data to make them suitable for the event processing and , knowledge extraction methods that enable intelligent applications and services for smart city platforms. Semantic Web technologies and Linked Data together with data analytics solutions play a key role in providing inter-operability, association analysis, information and knowledge extractions, and reasoning about trust, privacy, provenance, and security in smart city frameworks. Scope and Objectives This workshop will explore the interfaces between the Web, the Web of Data, and the City Smart environment. It will further explore how the Web, and the intelligences built on top of, and around the Web, can make the notion of the Smart Connected City possible and realizable. The workshop aims to gather researchers, city departments, service providers, application developers, entrepreneurs, and citizens to present and debate Semantic Web technologies, Linked Data and data analytics and evaluations for smart city applications as well as impact of user engagements and social networks. The workshop will also focus on related standardization activities in W3C, IEEE and ETSI. David Marshall, Christopher Moore, and Kim Barbour In the contemporary moment where aspects of our lives are rendered visible for display, circulation and exchange via our involvement in online cultures, investigating the concept of persona and the production of the networked self is critical to understanding the patterns and flows of everyday and extraordinary public identities. Persona is usually perceived as a mask of identity, something that clouds and occludes a truer or raw version of ourselves, or thought of in a Goffman-like way as a form of "role-playing" and "impression management". The production of persona can therefore be seen as something strategic, something essential to the modern experience, and ultimately something that is filled with affect and agency as the individual both constructs and inhabits these public identity formations. Persona inhabits a space between the fictive and the real and has been explored as constitutive of what it means to be human/citizen (Cicero), what constitutes consistency of character (literary persona), what allows a public figure to negotiate a surveilled life (celebrity persona or an artistic persona), and even what kind of avatar/identity and presentation of the self is presented in play and the broader structures of social interaction and participation in game cultures (gamer persona) and fandoms. http://ivc.lib.rochester.edu/cfp-invisible-culture-issue-23-blueprints<http://ivc.lib.rochester.edu/> “Blueprints” – Issue 23 For its twenty-third issue, InVisible Culture: An Electronic Journal for Visual Culture invites scholarly articles and creative works that consider the multiple valences of the topic: blueprints. In his theoretical manifesto, Toward An Architecture, Le Corbusier wrote, “The plan is the generator. Without plan there can be neither grandeur of aim and expression, nor rhythm, nor mass, nor coherence. . . . The plan is what determines everything; it is the decisive moment.” The plan or blueprint is the primary tool of the architect’s and the drafter’s trades—a technical document that bridges creative impulse and constructive labor, intent and execution, virtuality and materiality. Taking shape as a conversation among concept, form, and representation, a blueprint insistently nudges its spectator’s gaze outside its frame. It is understood as a necessary stage on the way to something larger, something grander, something more, and is usually seen not as a self-contained object, but as prescription directed toward a particular outcome. Yet a blueprint may also be the terminus of the unrealized and the unrealizable. Étienne-Louis Boullée’s Cénotaphe à Newton, Le Corbusier’s Ville Contemporaine, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Broadacres, and the Chicago Spire are among the many visionary designs abandoned at the drawing board, whose construction in real space we may now only imagine. In Issue 23, we would like contributors to consider how blueprints—and more broadly, agendas, manifestos, models, or prophesies—negotiate between the present and an imagined, idealized, or impossible future. What qualities and limitations are shared by conceptual architecture and other speculative mediums? How do plans and prototypes function as a critique of present realities? What is the aesthetic value of diagrams, renderings, sketches, or preparatory studies? What occurs when we no longer consider the model as process, but as finished product? What are the mechanisms through which the plan attempts to fill the gap between language and image or event? We welcome papers and artworks that further the various understandings of blueprints. Possible topics of exploration include, but are not limited to: * Conceptual architecture * Models, prototypes, renderings, and preparatory studies * Graphs, cyanotypes, etchings, and other media related to tracing * Political manifestos * Prophecy and speculation * Disparity between concept and execution * Representations of utopia or dystopia * World’s Fairs and Expos * Storyboards and scripts * Unfinished or posthumously completed works * Dance and performance notation * Digital urban planning Please send completed papers (with references following the guidelines from the Chicago Manual of Style) of between 4,000 and 10,000 words to ivc[dot]rochester[at]gmail[dot]com by October 15, 2014.
