Dear Internet researchers, Could any of you point me to articles that look at the role of gender in on-line activism, particularly the use of social media in activism? My own efforts at compiling a lit review on this subject has produced some work, but it would be helpful if I could identify some seminar work in the field. I'd be happy to compile what I receive for those that are interested. Yet our understanding of the complex mechanisms governing networks and collective behaviour is still deplorably shallow. Fundamental concepts of on- and off-line networks such as power, authority, leader-follower dynamics, consensus emergence, information sharing, conflict, and collaboration are still not well defined and investigated. These are all crucial to illuminate the advantages and pitfalls of collective decision-making, which can cancel out individual mistakes, but also spiral out of control. In recent endeavours, data from Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Wikipedia, and weblogs have been shown to strongly correlate to, and even predict, elections, opinions, attitudes, movie revenues, and oscillations in the stock market, to cite few examples. Similar data provided insights into the mechanisms driving the formation of groups of interests, topical communities, and the evolution of social networks. They also have been used to study polarization phenomena in politics, diffusion of information, and the dynamics of collective attention. However, a deeper understanding of these phenomena is still very much on demand. In parallel, and even preceding the surge in interest towards social media, the area of agent-based modeling (ABM) has grown in scope, focus and capability to produce testable hypotheses, going beyond the original goal of explaining macroscopic behaviors from simple interaction rules among stylized agents. The aim of this satellite is to address the question of ICT-mediated social phenomena emerging over multiple scales, ranging from the interactions of individuals to the emergence of self-organized global movements. We would like to gather researchers from different disciplines and methodological backgrounds to form a forum to discuss ideas, research questions, recent results, and future challenges in this emerging area of research and public interest. Relocation of IR15: Join us in Daegu, Korea!

We are excited and pleased to announce that IR15: Boundaries and Intersections will be held in Daegu, Korea, from October 21-24. (Please note the slight date change: the conference will start one day earlier than originally planned.) Our local hosts will be Han Woo Park, Professor, Department of Media & Communication, YeungNam University, Korea; and Leslie Tkach-Kawasaki, Associate Professor, Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Tsukuba, Japan. Prof. Park also hosts the DISC conference, taking place in Daegu this year in December (http://www.slideshare.net/hanpark/disc-2014-cfp-v3) Daegu is easily accessible from Seoul via air, train, or bus. This vibrant city is home to IT industry (and is the birthplace of Samsung), as well as significant cultural attractions (including several UNESCO World Heritage Sites). Our venue will be the Beomeo Saint Western Hotel, a newly opened hotel in the Beomeo district. Lodging will also be available in nearby hotels. Hi everyone, this job announcement might be of interest to you: At our internet research institute in Berlin (http://www.hiig.de, co-hosting IR 17), we are looking for a post-doc in Internet Research, Infrastructures and Governance in Berlin. ## Post-Doctoral Research Fellow Internet Infrastructure and Governance 12 Months http://www.hiig.de/en/open-position-post-doctoral-research-fellow/ The Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG) seeks applications from post-doctoral researchers for the position of a research fellow in Internet Policy and Governance. The candidate is expected to develop a research program focussing on governing infrastructures in digital societies. This post is a 0.75 FTE position and is available immediately for 12 months in the first instance, with the possibility of renewal thereafter, funding permitting. The salary is based on public sector wages (salary grade: TV-L 14, approx. € 35-40k p.a. gross salary, depending on your working experience, plus child allowances). Applications are invited from outstanding candidates with a PhD in social sciences. The succesful candidate will join the Internet Policy & Governance research team which investigates public and private forms of ordering from a social science perspective with a focus on the interplay between socio-cultural, technical and legal norms shaping the development of the Internet. In order to complement these research activities we seek a post-doctoral research fellow who investigates questions at the intersection of technologies, regulation, discourses and culture (in short: society) with regard to internet infrastructure. Along these lines, the research perspective shall not be restricted to a regulatory perspective on infrastructure but rather represent an articulate sensibility for “governing infrastructures” taking the the politics of infrastructures and technologies into account. Job Description • The succesful candidate is expected to develop and carry forward a research strategy addressing the governance of internet infrastructure and relevant discourses (eg. Net Neutrality, Routing, Big Data, Politics of Platforms). • A core task of this position is the acquisition of third-party funding facilitating the sustainable developement of this research agenda. • The successful candidate will develop and implement empirical case studies taking the lead in project management, data collection and analysis, and the dissemination of results. • The ideal candidate enjoys working with a multidisciplinary team of researchers and actively contributes to the intellectual exchange but also the management and administration of the research unit; the fellow will also mentor junior researchers and support the director. • The succesful candidate is expected to publish in top-rated journals and open-access outlets and to give presentations at national and international conferences. • There are no teaching obligations attached to this position, but teaching agreements with Berlin’s Universities are possible. With low entry barriers, participatory culture-based communities often encourage online participation and expression even as they promote expression, awareness, mentor-ship,and skill training. Premised on a dynamic understanding of citizenship, we analyze how participatory culture interactions encourage young people across political affiliations and social values to create, discuss and organize to engage with specific civic issues and events. We then ask how these interactions lead to new forms of organizing and action. > Over the past four years, MAPP conducted five case studies of diverse youth-driven communities which translate mechanisms of participatory culture into civic engagement and political participation. Our findings stress the interplay between individual growth, organizations, networks, communities, and platforms. As MAPP researchers learned, these groups often succeed by tapping practices of cultural appropriation, storytelling and remixing, working across organizational contexts, deploying metaphors from popular culture, and drawing on sustained engagement with interest-driven and friendship-based networks. MIT OCW-centric, C.C. World University and School has a new web URL - http://worlduniversityandschool.org

WUaS is planning to facilitate open, C.C., wiki schools in all 7,106 languages and 242 countries, in addition to accrediting in countries with 'large' languages for free degrees; Wikipedia is in at least 300 languages and MIT OCW is in at least 8 non-English languages, by way of comparison. As MIT OCW- and great universities- OER-centric wiki schools, please feel free to teach, learn, and add resources to the current Wiki (which presently has about 670 wiki pages, all in English, so far). Hi everyone, I am currently starting research on online mob/vigilante justice and was wondering if anyone is researching the same topic or know of any studies/resources. Prime examples of online mob justice include the failed hunt for the Boston bomber by Reddit users or many of the 'human flesh search engine' cases in China. I would be grateful for any suggestions.
