A Canadian-American sociologist, his overarching interest is in the paradigm shift from group-centered relations to networked individualism. His research examines virtual community, the virtual workplace, social support, community, kinship, friendship, and social network theory and methods. His methodological contributions have been for the analysis of ego-centered or "personal" networks - defined from the standpoint of an individual. This calls for somewhat different techniques than the more common social network practice of analysing a single large network. Barry Wellman said "I am deeply honoured by this. And want to pay tribute to the many NetLab members - and Networked co-author Lee Rainie - who have been my wonderful intellectual playmates through the years." OII Acting Director, Dr Victoria Nash said "Barry Wellman's approach to studying the networks that connect us as individuals has had a profound effect on the field of Internet research, reflected in much of the work of our colleagues and students. We are delighted to honour his contribution today. " The top-cited Canadian sociologist, Wellman's current work continues to focus on the interplay between information and communication technologies, especially the Internet, social relations and social structure. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2007. The award will be presented on 7th November in Oxford, at an awards dinner and ceremony that also includes Lifetime Achievement awards for Sir Tim Berners Lee and Dame Stephanie Shirley.

Trust is at the heart of every meaningful learning experience, whether it's between educator and student, mentor and learner, or peers and their learning networks. As learners become more immersed in digital learning experiences, trust has also become increasingly important in connected learning environments. The press release announcing the Trust Challenge, the fifth Digital Media and Learning Competition, details how the MacArthur Foundation and HASTAC are responding to the Aspen Institute Task Force's report about Learners and the Internet, particularly challenges facing trust in connected learning environments. The $1.2 Million Learning Challenge: Building Trust Online Fifth Digital Media & Learning Competition responds to Aspen report citing the need for a safe and open internet to foster learning WASHINGTON – June 17, 2014 – HASTAC and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, responding to a landmark Aspen Institute report, announced a $1.2 million challenge to foster trust in online learning environments and help educators harness one of the most powerful tools of the digital age—online networks. The 5th Digital Media and Learning Competition, dubbed The Trust Challenge, will offer year-long development grants of up to $150,000 to teams with the most promising innovations for fostering trusted learning environments online. The open invitation for proposals is supported by the MacArthur Foundation through a grant to the University of California, Irvine, administered by HASTAC, an alliance of more than 14,000 humanists, artists, social scientists, scientists and technologists working together to transform the future of learning. The Trust Challenge is a response to a new report by the Aspen Institute Task Force on Learning and the Internet that called for innovations that enable people to pursue learning experiences online in an environment that is safe and private. The task force focused on American education, but the Trust Challenge is an international competition because the challenge is global. “The Aspen Institute Task Force on Learning and the Internet has highlighted the transformative role that digital media can play in helping every learner to reach his or her full potential,” said David Theo Goldberg, a HASTAC board member and the director of the University of California Humanities Research Institute. “Our competition seeks to advance solutions that build the trusted environments learners need online so they can safely and confidently access the rich learning opportunities the Internet affords.” In the Task Force report, Learner at the Center of a Networked World, also made public on Thursday, Honorary Co-Chairs Jeb Bush and Rosario Dawson argue a trusted online environment is necessary for effective learning. “Technology should revolve around the learner, not the other way around,” they wrote. “And the learner should possess the digital age literacy tools to use and understand the media in both the virtual and physical worlds.” The Aspen Institute report envisions a future of openness and innovation in education if America can shift away from a fear-based approach to using the Internet that unwittingly blocks access to valuable learning resources. “Just as the digital revolution changed many industries, its promise is now being realized in learning environments inside and outside schools,” said Connie Yowell, MacArthur’s Director of Education and a leading proponent of Connected Learning. “The Internet is a vital link, and innovative educators are helping learners create unique and personalized learning pathways as they follow their interests online, connect to supportive peers and mentors, and become the creative makers and producers today’s economy rewards. Our goal is to support this explosion of interest-driven learning by ensuring all learners can safely and confidently leverage these rich digital resources.” The Trust Challenge is open to museums, libraries, school districts, schools, higher education institutions, community organizations, developers, researchers and others committed to creative, open connected learning. Successful projects will develop digital projects and tools designed to build privacy, security, and safety into its digital offerings and build awareness around data and trust. Projects might include web or online applications, digital badge systems, data management platforms, online learning content or other innovations. Winners will receive grants of $10,000 to $150,000 as well as a year of programming designed to support successful project development. *Call for Chapters: Alternate Reality Games and the Cusp of Digital Gameplay* Series: Approaches to Digital Game Studies, Bloomsbury Editors: Antero Garcia, Colorado State University & Greg Niemeyer, University of California, Berkeley Alternate Reality Games (ARGs) challenge what players understand as “real.” Though prominent examples of ARGs have persisted over the past two decades, only recently have ARGs come to the prominence as a unique and highly visible digital game genre. Adopting many of the same strategies as online video games, ARGs blur the distinction between the “real” and the “virtual.” We seek chapter proposals for a proposed collection that explores and defines the possibilities of ARGs. With ARGs continuing to be an important and blurred space between digital and physical gameplay, this collection offers clear analysis of game design, implementation, and ramifications for game studies. Divided into three distinct sections (noted below), this collection emphasizes first hand accounts by leading ARG creators, scholarly analysis of the meaning behind ARGs from noted critics and researchers, and explication of emerging visualization and data collection methodologies. We are particularly interested in cultivating research from various disciplinary perspectives; by balancing the voices of designers, players, and researchers, this work highlights how the Alternate Reality Game genre is transforming the ways we play and interact today. We seek chapter proposals that fit within one of the following three book sections: *Section One – Development and Execution* Chapters in this section of the book detail the design and implementation of ARGs. Authors pay attention to specific fictions, audiences, and goals within these ARGs and offer a clear step-by-step behind the scenes look at how these game designers engineer new modes of play and participation. *Section Two – Alternating Reality – how ARGs are changing games and society* These chapters focus on analysis and critique of ARGs. While some chapters may focus on specific games, other chapters in this section invoke larger trends in ARGs. *Section Three – Data Visualization and Collection* As the ARG genre is dependent on responding to the ways participants interact with one another and with a story’s content, this section of the book looks at how we interpret and construct data. In particular, the genre of digital games is reinventing new data visualization methodologies and this section should illuminate ways games display information during play and as synopsis after a game concludes. Hi Cory, You don't have to grant the translator access to your account (and you shouldn't). If the tab "Collaboration" is available for your survey (My Surveys >> Tasks), you can simply type the translator's email and she'll be granted access to the survey. Qualtrics allow for this kind of collaboration even if the invited user is not under the same license as you. More details here: http://www.qualtrics.com/university/researchsuite/basic-building/getting-sta rted/collaboration/ I've never tried this workaround by transferring CSV files back and forth between you and another user, but I wonder how you're planning to merge the two survey questionnaires later on. In Search of a New Balance A by-invitation experts' workshop New America Foundation September 10-12, 2014 CALL FOR PAPERS Traditional notions of individual and public rights with respect to information are being redefined across a broad front, raising profound challenges to freedom of speech, assembly, association, and communication. The aggregation, archiving and use of information also have profound implications for the future of national security and business strategy. Currently, decision-makers are responding to capabilities enabled by new technologies, for which appropriate usage norms have not yet emerged, and are struggling to formulate coherent strategies addressing some fundamental questions. Can and should the legitimate demands of border security, law and order and the prevention of terrorism limit an individual's rights over personal and/or private information? What restraints on the collection, aggregation and use of personal information should exist? How do we balance the principles of zones of personal privacy, the right to control one's most personal information, and ownership rights over digital media, with the benefits of vibrant markets in information goods and services? Is there a general right to have one's personal information removed from all commercial digital databases? Are there practical models that respect human dignity without crippling data aggregators? Vociferous information ownership debates are taking place in the copyright and intellectual property fields as well. The digitization of content has enabled access to works that have not been in circulation for years, if not centuries. Yet some copyright/IP holders have suggested that works in the public domain, if not actively defended, should be privatized, and works that currently benefit from the time-limited protection of law for the public s benefit should become the permanent property of private rights holders, effectively ending the public domain. There are modest examples of alternatives: the Open Source community; the Creative Commons/copyleft movement; the increasing emergence of collaborative no-charge academic journals, etc. What are the practical models that strengthen the public domain, and still provide sufficient incentives for creative productions? We've heard the traditional answers to these questions and invite prospective authors to comment in an independent, scholarly, and innovative way on topics regarding control of information in the 21st Century. Multidisciplinary approaches are encouraged that combine theory and evidence to evolve integrative and long-term perspectives on information rights. The Institute for Information Policy (IIP) at Penn State and the X-Lab at the New America Foundation (NAF) are pleased to announce this call for papers that offer new (or updated) perspectives and theories about the balance between the rights of individuals, states, businesses and the public in information and personal data. Authors of selected papers will be invited to present them during a three day, invitation-only workshop designed to bring together a diverse group of experts and to be held at the New America Foundation in Washington, DC. This Workshop is the 9th in a series of events on "Making Policy Research Accessible," organized by the IIP, with the support of the Ford Foundation and the Media Democracy Fund. The world’s population is rapidly urbanizing. By 2005, the world’s population had increased to 6.5 billion, with about 50% living in cities. By 2025, UN projections show that the world population is expected to exceed 9 billion with roughly 75% expected to live in cities. This rapid urbanization is continuing to put tremendous pressure on traditional urban infrastructures, such as roads, water, and energy, and on societal institutions. This urbanization challenges require new approaches that will transform modern cities to comfortable, economically successful, and environmentally responsible habitats. We are also seeing a rapid rise in the connection and usage of billions of low-end and affordable smart devices to the Internet, i.e. the Internet of Things, and witnessing the expansion of the Web into more areas of our personal lives. These trends make possible a new generation of smart city applications and services, with new smart city applications emerging as more data from different sources (e.g. from utility services, transport services, environmental data, and from social sensing) become available. These smart city data are large in volume, multi-modal, vary in quality, formats, and representation forms. These data need to be processed, aggregated, and higher-level abstractions need to be created from these data to make them suitable for the event processing and , knowledge extraction methods that enable intelligent applications and services for smart city platforms. Semantic Web technologies and Linked Data together with data analytics solutions play a key role in providing inter-operability, association analysis, information and knowledge extractions, and reasoning about trust, privacy, provenance, and security in smart city frameworks. Scope and Objectives This workshop will explore the interfaces between the Web, the Web of Data, and the City Smart environment. It will further explore how the Web, and the intelligences built on top of, and around the Web, can make the notion of the Smart Connected City possible and realizable. The workshop aims to gather researchers, city departments, service providers, application developers, entrepreneurs, and citizens to present and debate Semantic Web technologies, Linked Data and data analytics and evaluations for smart city applications as well as impact of user engagements and social networks. Best way to work with translation provider and Qualtrics?

I’m preparing a cross-national survey using Qualtrics.com, and will deploy the survey in two languages. My translation provider is not familiar with the Qualtrics platform, and I’m leery of providing access to my account. Does anyone have recommendations for how to best translate a survey without having to provide account access to the translator? It does appear that Qualtrics allows one to download the survey as a CSV file, and then create a second survey upon importing a CSV file. A possible workflow: 1. Send the CSV file in the first language to the translator, 2. having translation completed on the sent file, 3. and then creating the second language survey by uploading the translated CSV file to Quatrics.
