European meta data researchers wanted
by Mathias Klang 21 Jul '14

21 Jul '14

Hi, Part of my work is for Commons Machinery (commonsmachinery.se) and we are applying for an EU grant. As part of this process we would like to include European researchers interested in culture and metadata. This should be a good opportunity for PhD students. Please contact me if you are interested. See the short proposal sketched out below regards Mathias *The **Snappy Title **Project* Commons Machinery and partners are planning to apply for funding for a project, the goal of which is to bridge the gap between audiences and artists by making cultural material more useable online. Succinctly, we're developing tools that make it possible to link back to the original context of images, even when those images are distributed and shared widely online. With this e-mail, we're looking for partners in academia, among cultural institutions, artists, and from the community itself -- as thought partners, active participants in the project, participants in our reference group or in other forms. *The Funding* We're applying for a small scale Cooperation Project under Creative Europe, with an expected deadline for submission the 1st of October 2014. The EU funds up to EUR 200,000 for small scale projects, and require a 40% co-financing by applicants. We're looking for a project that lasts 1½-2 years, with a start date in May 2015 - but we'll draft the final details in collaboration. Organizations from any part of the world may join, but there are restrictions on the funding that could be made available for organizations from outside of the EU (and some other countries, full list on http://ec.europa.eu/culture/opportunities/documents/eligible-countries_en.p…) *The****Background* Our online environment is awash with images, however many of these images have been moved from their original context and no longer retain the information that gives them meaning. When organizations and individuals put images online they are often viewed in within a single web domain, collection or authorship. However, due to the ease in copying, images are often removed from their original contexts and, through this, they lose some of their meaning and value; it becomes impossible to trace them back to their origin. From a practical point of view, it's also an issue for users who want to correctly reuse an image in accordance with copyright legislation; they must save copyright and other information to adequately attribute the creator, and maintain this information through all stages of their work. This system is unwieldy, complex, and unreliable. Using new technology with tool integration, information about the images could seamlessly follow the image without effort from the users. This system would not be limited to copyright basics such as authorship but can include a range of additional information about the image, for example, where the original is, which collection it belongs to, which organization retains rights to the image (if any!), and where users can learn more about the image. Such information could be automatically visualized and made available to users, even when they encounter images outside of their original context, for instance when an image has been shared online, posted in a forum, or made available on another web site. This is of interest to organizations connected with the image (such as galleries, libraries, archives, and museums). Such organizations, as well as the artists themselves and the audience, would all benefit from having a stronger association between each and every digital image and its' context. *The **Solution **& Our Hypothesis* Commons Machinery is working to create an infrastructure and the tools needed to make this association persistent. Our Elogio web service will enable an audience to save and use images, while keeping all relevant contextual information intact. It will also allow holders of information about images to make such information available through this common infrastructure in a way that when the audience encounter their images online, the contextual information is displayed, and when a user saves or uses an image, the original context is carried over into the resulting work. Our hypothesis is that if this information is made available to the audience, it would increase the bond between audiences and artists, and between audiences and cultural institutions. By visualizing the context in which images used online originally has appeared, we believe that the viewers will feel a stronger connection with the artists and the institutions holding the originals, leading to a potential in retaining and enlarging their audience, as well as improving the experience of viewing images online and deepening the relationships. *The Project & The **Test* The technology is still in its early stages, and our hypothesis is just this -- a hypothesis. Through this project, we would hope to learn more about how this kind of technology can be used for audience engagement, and if it does indeed lead to deeper and more relevant relationships. We envision a project where each main partner has specific and complementary skill sets and expertise. The content providers -- cultural institutions -- know their content and are interested in making it more usable to the public while ensuring that links back to their institution remain intact. Our systems developers will collaborate with these participating institutions in tailoring the system to their needs, providing education and training, and gathering data on its use. Research partners will be engaged in the gathering and analysis of the empirical data through qualitative interviews with the participants, surveys among users, and analysis of the data generated from the use of the system. Researchers will be actively involved by conducting in depth interviews with stakeholders, gathering empirical data about each of their needs. The data from the use of the system together with interviews will provide material for researchers working to evaluate the system in the wider context of sharing cultural material online. Community partners will be engaged throughout the project in raising awareness and interest in the project and the work by holding workshops, training sessions and facilitating other meetings involving the projects' stakeholder groups. The project will provide education and training materials about metadata and its usage to help content providers and individuals alike. *What we're looking for* If you, as an individual, as representing an organisation or institution, or your organization or institution as a whole, has an interest in the project, we invite you to email us at hello(a)commonsmachinery.se <mailto:hello@commonsmachinery.se> to introduce yourself. As mentioned in the beginning, we're looking for participants in our reference group of the project that will continuously influence the project by giving their thoughts on issues we'll be facing along the way. We're also looking for GLAM institutions and other information holders who may want to participate in the project by delivering information to it, and, with our help, engaging with their own audiences to try the tools (primarily browser extensions). We can only have a very limited number of such core partners though, but we'll aim to make the instructions available broadly so that others can also participate. In terms of research partners, we're looking for people and universities with a background and interest in researching these kinds of audience engagements through technology, or who have other complementary research agendas which they feel are interesting to explore in collaboration. -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mathias Klang, Associate Professor, University of Göteborg Website: http://klangable.com US Cell: 215 882 0989 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Hi Rich & the rest of the community Two titles come to my mind - both directly related to the introduction of phones: Assa Doron and Robin Jeffrey: The Great Indian Phone Book: How the Cheap Cell Phone Changes Business, Politics, and Daily Life (2013) Heather Hudson: When Telephones Reach the Village: The Role of Telecommunication in Rural Development (1984) BR, John Willy Bakke -----Original Message----- From: Air-L [mailto:air-l-bounces@listserv.aoir.org] On Behalf Of Rich Ling Sent: 2. juli 2014 09:10 To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org Subject: [Air-L] Suggestions for literature on adoption of technology as background for our study of mobiles in Myanmar Dear all, Along with colleagues from Nanyang Technical University, I am starting an ethnographic study of the adoption and diffusion of mobile phones in Myanmar. The study is also being supported by Telenor. Myanmar is one of the last countries in the world without a well developed mobile communication network (the others are North Korea, Cuba and Eritrea). We are starting to put together the literature review and we are interested in gathering suggestions. We are using Jonathan Donner's lives and livelihoods idea to frame the work. Beyond that I would like to get the wisdom of the crowd regarding the articles and books that examine the question of introducing new technology to a society and tracing the social consequences of the technology. I think, for example, of Cottrell's Death by Dieselization or perhaps Sharp's Steel Axes for Stone-age Australians. I know that neither of these two articles are about ICTs and that both are as old as dust, but they focus on socio-technical transitions and their social consequences. What are the other articles and books in this genre that might help us focus on the transition from face to face interaction to mediated communication? Thanks in advance. CFP: 2nd Call - Problematizing Cyber Wars
by Vit Sisler 18 Jul '14

18 Jul '14

Problematizing Cyber Wars Call for Papers CyberOrient: Online Journal of the Virtual Middle East Editor-in-Chief: Daniel Martin Varisco Guest Editor: Helga Tawil-Souri Submission deadline: September 30, 2014 (Full Papers) Aim According to military analysts, since the 1991 Gulf War and even more so since the Hezbollah-Israel 2006 war, we have entered a new phase of warfare, in which kinetic and traditional military power are losing importance to symbolic and media power. Perhaps unsurprisingly given a still-widely held Orientalist view in military circles, many such perspectives revolve around wars and conflicts in the ‘Middle East’ or against ‘Islam’ more broadly – taking place in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Israel/Palestine, Syria, but also on cyber networks and mobile phones. While these claims are of course hyperbole, this special issue of CyberOrient invites articles on questions of how we might define wars in a (new) media-age in the region; whether, why, and how (new) media are increasingly sites of warfare; the relationships between ‘virtual’ and ‘real’ battlespaces. Topics could include the significance of targeting (and bombing) telecommunications and media infrastructures; the use of (new) media as outlets for propaganda during wartime; the mediatization of war and the militarization of media; the role of participatory or social media and mobile communications during and in wars; relationships or differences between official, military, alternative, citizen, and grass-roots (new) media uses during war and conflict; the expanding definition of warzones; commemoration and memorialization of war in a digital age; among others. We welcome submissions from across disciplines and methodological approaches that are empirically and critically grounded. About CyberOrient CyberOrient (http://www.cyberorient.net/) is a peer-reviewed journal published by the American Anthropological Association, in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague. The aim of the journal is to provide research and theoretical considerations on the representation of Islam and the Middle East, the very areas that used to be styled as an “Orient”, in cyberspace, as well as the impact of the internet and new media in Muslim and Middle Eastern contexts. Submission Articles should be submitted directly to Helga Tawil-Souri (helga(a)nyu.edu) and Vit Sisler (vit.sisler(a)ff.cuni.cz) Article should be between 6,000 and 8,000 words (including references), and follow the AAA style in referencing and citations. Upon acceptance, articles will be published online with free access in spring 2015. Toward an Internet Bill of Rights
by Ian O'Byrne 18 Jul '14

18 Jul '14

Hi all, I'd like to share and invite you in to the early stages of an initiative currently getting started. We'd like to bring the Internet community together to synthesize the prior work and develop an Internet Bill of Rights. There is a good amount of prior work that has been shared online in this area. I'd be interested in bringing together the collective wisdom in the AoIR society to help develop a framework of freedoms and rights we believe to be inherent in online spaces. To that end, I've shared a blog post <http://wiobyrne.com/toward-an-internet-bill-of-rights/>, and Google Doc <https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Ddgjd_AyB2aftB1qrtyTaZqcIcwxgT9AuAM6dku…> to act as a working copy. Please join in and lend your support in this initiative. Once we have a minimum viable product, I'll move the contents of the Google Doc to Wikipedia for further editing and comments. Thanks again, -Ian _________________________ W. CFP for AAG 2015: Digital Connectivity, Inclusion, and Inequality at the World’s Economic Margins
by Mark Graham 18 Jul '14

18 Jul '14

*Digital Connectivity, Inclusion, and Inequality at the World’s Economic Margins* AAG Annual Meeting <http://www.aag.org/cs/annualmeeting/call_for_papers>, Chicago, April 21-25, 2015 *Organisers: * *Mark Graham <http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/people/?id=165> and Chris Foster <http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/people/?id=356>, University of Oxford* We are in the throes of a global transformation of digital connectivity. Over six billion people have access to phones and two and a half billion people use the internet. Meanwhile, governments, international organisations, and corporations are developing plans, projects, and policies to connect the remaining disconnected. Fibre-optic cables, laptops for every child, and drones, balloons, and satellites all beaming down internet access are just some of the strategies being actively planned to bring connectivity to the rest of the world in the coming years. As we approach a situation in which almost half of humanity is online, we need to explore the difference people expect connectivity to make at the world’s economic peripheries. Will connectivity amplify or deepen economic inequalities? Should we expect empowerment, inclusion, and opportunities; or further exploitation and extraversion? This session brings together papers that seek to explore the differences that connectivity makes, and can make, in the contemporary international division of labour and on-going global shifts in economic flows. It will critically explore ‘Bottom of the Pyramid’ networked capitalism, and the opportunities, struggles, and alternatives that it underpins. It will also facilitate a space for research that addresses the central question of ‘who benefits and who doesn’t from the increasing networking of the world’s population?’ *Potential topics include:* - Discourses around connectivity, inclusion, and exclusion in the Global South - ICT and development policies and who they ultimately benefit. - Changes to global value chains or production networks - Opportunities for upgrading or disintermediation - Empirical or theoretical engagements with the idea of ‘connectivity’ and the roles that it can play amongst the world’s poorest - Contemporary or historical treatments of the links between connectivity and inequality - Alternative ways of imagining or envisioning connectivity at the world’s economic peripheries - Case studies of global ‘body shopping’, digital work, or bottom of the pyramid capitalism - Policies and initiatives for digital connectivity which support inclusion and reduced inequality *Submission Procedure:* To be considered for the session, please send your abstract of 250 words or fewer, to: mark.graham(a)oii.ox.ac.uk and christopher.foster(a)oii.ox.ac.uk The deadline for receipt of abstracts is October 1 2014. Notification of acceptance will be before October 7. All accepted papers will then need to register for the AAG conference at aag.org. Accepted papers will be considered for a special issue or edited volume edited by the organisers. ------------------------------------------ Dr Mark Graham Associate Professor and Senior Research Fellow Oxford Internet Institute University of Oxford Research Fellow Green Templeton College University of Oxford Visiting Research Associate School of Geography and the Environment University of Oxford oii.ox.ac.uk/people/graham <http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/people/graham> | geospace.co.uk <http://www.geospace.co.uk> | Information Geographies <http://geography.oii.ox.ac.uk> | wikichains.org <http://www.wikichains.org> | @geoplace <http://twitter.com/geoplace> | zerogeography blog <http://www.zerogeography.net/> <http://twitter.com/geoplace>

However, they note, a functional infrastructure and means for researchers to collaborate across the disciplines and around the world is conspicuously absent. The *Immersive Learning Research Network* aims to fill that gap by promoting an open interdisciplinary research agenda, global forums, and a comprehensive scholarly toolset for those seriously involved in producing and understanding immersive learning experiences. CFP - JoPP Special Issue on Feminism and (Un)Hacking
by Mathieu.O'Neil 18 Jul '14

18 Jul '14

<apologies for repeated posts> Journal of Peer Production (JoPP) CFP for Special Issue on Feminism and (Un)Hacking Editors: Shaowen Bardzell (Indiana University), Lilly Nguyen (University of California - Irvine), Sophie Toupin (McGill University) There has been a recent growth in interest in feminist approaches to practices like hacking, tinkering, geeking and making. What started off as an interest in furthering representations of women in the technical fields of computer science and engineering, often along the lines of liberal feminism, has now grown into social, cultural, and political analyses of gendered modes of social reproduction, expertise, and work, among others. Practices of hacking, tinkering, geeking, and making have been criticized for their overtly masculinist approaches, often anchored in the Euro-American techno-centers of Silicon Valley and Cambridge that have created a culture of entrepreneurial heroism and a certain understanding of technopolitical liberation, or around the German Chaos Computer Club (CCC). With this special issue of the Journal of Peer Production, we hope to delve more deeply into these critiques to imagine new forms of feminist technical praxis that redefine these practices and/or open up new ones. How can we problematize hacking, tinkering, geeking and making through feminist theories and epistemologies? How do these practices, in fact, change when we begin to consider them through a feminist prism? Can we envision new horizons of practice and possibility through a feminist critique? In this call, we understand feminist perspectives to be pluralistic, including intersectional, trans, genderqueer, and race-sensitive viewpoints that are committed to the central principles of feminism--agency, fulfillment, empowerment, diversity, and social justice. We refer to the term hacking with a full understanding of its histories and limitations. That said, we use it provisionally to provoke, stimulate, and reimagine new possibilities for technical feminist practice. Hacking, as a form of subjectivity and a mode of techno-political engagement, has recently emerged as a site of intense debate, being equally lauded as a political ethos of freedom and slandered as an elitist form of expertise. These fervid economic and political ideals have been challenged and at times come under attack because they not only displace women and genderqueer within these technological communities but, more importantly, because they displace gendered forms of reflection and engagement. Drawing on a growing community of feminist scholarship and practices, we hope to build on this momentum to invite submissions that reconceptualize the relationship between feminism and hacking. We aim to highlight feminist hackers, makers and geeks not only as new communities of experts, but as new modes of engagement and novel theoretical developments. In turn, with this special issue, we hope to challenge both concepts of feminism and hacking to ask several questions. How can feminist approaches to hacking open up new possibilities for technopolitics? Historically, hacking discourses center on political and labor aesthetics of creation, disruption, and transgression. How can feminist theories of political economy push technopolitical imaginaries towards alternate ideals of reproduction, care, and maintenance? Conversely, we also ask how notions of hacking can open up new possibilities for feminist epistemologies and modes of engagement? We seek scholarly articles and commentaries that address any of the following themes and beyond. We are also interested in portraits, understood broadly, of feminist hackers, makers and geeks that help us better understand feminist hacker, maker and geek culture. We also solicit experimental formats such as photo essays or other media that address the special issue themes. · What is distinctive about feminist hacking or hackers? How does feminist hacking practices help create a distinct feminist hacking culture? · Why are feminist hacking practices emerging? Which constellation of factors help the emergence of such practices? · What do we know about the feminist hacker spectrum? i.e. what are the differences among feminist hacking practices and how can we make sense of these distinctions? · What tensions in hacking and/or in hacker practices and culture(s) come to the fore when feminist, anti-patriarchal, anti-racist, anti-capitalist and/or anti-oppression perspectives are taken? · What does feminist hacker ethic(s) entail? · What kind of social imaginaries are emerging with feminist hacking and hackers? · What kinds of hacking are taking place beyond the Euro-American tradition? Submission abstracts of 300-500 words due by September 8, 2014, and should be sent to femhack(a)peerproduction.net. All peer reviewed papers will be reviewed according to Journal of Peer Production guidelines; see http://peerproduction.net/peer-review/process/ Full papers and materials (peer reviewed papers around 8,000 words; testimonies, self-portraits and experimental formats up to 4,000 words) are due by January 31st, 2015 for review.

CFP: CSMC - Digital Labor, Below the Line
by Nina Huntemann 17 Jul '14

17 Jul '14

Please circulate widely and consider submitting your work to this special issue of Critical Studies in Media Communication! CALL FOR PAPERS Critical Studies in Media Communication Special Issue: Digital Labor, Below-the-Line Submission deadline: January 12, 2015 Final drafts due: April 12, 2015 Publication: August 2015 The work required to produce the web and to fill the media devices that increasingly occupy 21st century life is often difficult to see. With a click content appears, images proliferate, and text, sound and video streams across our screens. However, behind the screen exists a globally distributed network of people who toil to create, manage, distribute, promote and update digital content. Their labor reflects new modes of production and shifting divisions of labor that characterize media production in a digital economy. For this special issue of Critical Studies in Media Communication, issue editor Nina Huntemann seeks papers that explore digital media workers “behind the screen.” Submissions should advance scholarship about invisible labor in the digital media industries, and should principally consider the labor produced by those engaged in below-the-line work. Cultural producers in such positions might include social media interns, web content editors and copywriters, online community managers, video game playtesters, 3D animation modelers and riggers, texture artists, video loggers, and digital content asset managers. In addition to workers involved in cultural production, this special issue also invites papers that consider the labor of those working to create and maintain the digital media infrastructure, such as hardware assembly line workers, miners in raw materials extraction, technical support staff (e.g. Genius Bar/Geek Squad), and security personnel at data centers. The editor is particularly interested in manuscripts that consider the special issue theme at the intersections of gender, race/ethnicity, nation/region, sexual orientation, class, and ability. To discuss possible submissions, please email the issue editor Nina Huntemann at nhuntemann(a)suffolk.edu<mailto:nhuntemann@suffolk.edu>. About the Journal Critical Studies in Media Communication (CSMC) <http://www.tandfonline.com/rcsm> publishes scholarship in media and mass communication written from a Cultural Studies and critical perspective. Research articles selected for publication make a substantial contribution to existing literature in media studies, provide novel theoretical insights that have the potential to stimulate further research, and serve as foundational contributions for debates within and beyond the field of communication. While each essay is well researched, primary emphasis is on the theoretical contribution the essay makes through the development of concepts, terms, and ideas that move the field in new and exciting directions. Submission Details All manuscripts must conform to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th edition, 2010) and should not exceed 7,000 words including references, notes, figures, and tables. Shorter pieces will be considered. Essays significantly longer than 7,000 words may be returned. All submissions should be made online at Critical Studies in Media Communication’s ScholarOne Manuscripts site<http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/rcsm>. Please see the journal website<http://www.tandfonline.com/rcsm> for the complete submission instructions for authors. -- Nina Huntemann, PhD. nhuntemann(a)suffolk.edu<mailto:nhuntemann@suffolk.edu> Associate Professor, Suffolk University Book Review Editor, Critical Studies in Media Communication
