CFP: Special Issue of The Journal of Community Informatics
by Colin Rhinesmith 13 Jul '14

13 Jul '14

Call for Papers: The Journal of Community Informatics (http://ci-journal.net) Special Issue – Research Methods for Community Informatics The Journal of Community Informatics (JoCI) is seeking scholarly articles and notes from the field for a special issue on Research Methods for Community Informatics. Community Informatics is the study and the practice of enabling communities with Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs). JoCI is an international journal that focuses on how researchers and practitioners work with communities towards the effective use of ICTs to improve their processes, achieve their objectives, overcome the “digital divides” that exist both within and between communities, and empower communities and citizens. This is possible in areas such as health, cultural production, civic management and e-governance, among others. JoCI is a focal point for the communication of research of interest to a global network of academics, community informatics practitioners, and national and multi-lateral policy makers. JoCI is currently indexed in the IBSS and Google Scholar as well as several indexes of Open Access journals. Efforts are underway concerning additional scholarly indexing. More information regarding JoCI is available at http://ci-journal.net. The guest editors for the special issue are: Dr. Colin Rhinesmith (University of Oklahoma, USA), Dr. Mark Wolfe (University of Alberta, Canada), and Andy Bytheway (Retired Professor of Information Management at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, South Africa). Objective This special issue will focus on the methods used to investigate how ICTs can support local economic development, social justice, and political empowerment. Community Informatics (CI) is a point of convergence concerning the use of ICTs for diverse stakeholders, including community leaders and activists, nonprofit groups, policymakers, users/citizens, and the range of academics working across (and integrating) disciplines as diverse as Information Studies, Management, Computer Science, Social Work, Planning and Development Studies. This diversity brings with it a range of methodological approaches – and tensions – to the field of CI. The special issue seeks to both disentangle and organize the use of existing methods in CI research and to explore innovative new approaches used by researchers and practitioners in their work with communities. Topics This special issue seeks articles focused on methodological topics and issues related to community informatics research. We encourage contributions that come from a wide range of perspectives, including (but not limited to): Conceptual foundations. What are the pros and cons of positivist, interpretivist, and critical methods in the CI context? Data elicitation. What techniques are needed for reliable data to be collected in local communities, and what is the role of the cloud, “big data,” and data analytics in this context? Measures of success. What is the extent to which key variables and measures of CI investment success are actually understood? Ethics. How are research ethics understood in the context of CI work? Comparative analysis. How can shared local and global research resources be developed for comparative studies in different regions of the world? Cross-cultural studies. How are data elicitation techniques and methods used in a cross-cultural context? Extant theory. What is the applicability of other extant theories from related research areas (e.g., MIS, anthropology, science and technology studies, etc.) to the field of CI methodology? We also invite authors to submit “Notes from the Field” from CI practitioners and policy makers that describe relevant methodological topics and issues. Submission procedure and deadlines Full original and unpublished articles for this special issue should be submitted via the JoCI website. Authors are invited to submit full-length papers between 5000-7000 words and notes from the field between 3000-5000 words. All full-length research articles will be double blind peer-reviewed. Notes from the field containing insights and analytical perspectives from practitioners and policy makers are also encouraged – these will not be peer-reviewed. All authors should provide a note to the editors via the website indicating their interest in having their submissions considered for the special issue on “Research Methods for Community Informatics.” Interested authors should consult the journal’s editorial policies and author guidelines for submissions at http://ci-journal.net/index.php/ciej/information/authors. Full article draft submissions due: November 15, 2014. Notes from the field due: December 15, 2014. All inquiries should be directed to: Colin Rhinesmith, Guest Editor Email: crhines(a)illinois.edu (before August 1, 2014) / crhinesmith(a)ou.edu (after August 1, 2014) --- Colin Rhinesmith, Ph.D. Graduate School of Library and Information Science University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign http://people.lis.illinois.edu/~crhines

call for delegate, Downscaling Culture Conference
by Dorottya Cserző 11 Jul '14

11 Jul '14

Downscaling Culture Revisiting Intercultural Communication Cardiff University, Wales, UK 18-19 September 2014 Call for delegates In this two-day conference we would like to address culture and intercultural communication from a micro-perspective. Commonly the linguistic study of intercultural communication is concerned with analysing miscommunication between speakers from two or more different 'cultures', defined predominantly as large-scale nation and language communities. A downscaled notion of culture challenges this perspective and encourages a fresh look at local cultures: subcultures, small groups, families, communities of practice; every group of persons who use common signs to create meaning-making ensembles of signs that relate to their life-world. The papers in this conference will focus on such downscaled notions of culture, as well as revisit the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of intercultural communication studies. Participants from across the world present their research on various topics, including food talk, charity discourse, educational policies and world Englishes. A full programme can be viewed on the conference website<http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/encap/newsandevents/events/conferences/downscaling…>. We are pleased to announce the following distinguished speakers: Dr Shobha Satyanath, University of Delhi, India Professor Srikant Sarangi, Aalborg University, Denmark Dr Frances Rock & Amal Hallak, Cardiff University, UK Dr Tereza Spilioti, Cardiff University, UK The registration fee is ?30.00, which includes a conference pack, refreshments, tea, coffee, water and cold lunch for two days. Registration is open until the 26th August 2014. Registration forms can be downloaded from our website and should be emailed to the organising committee at downscalingculture(a)cardiff.ac.uk<mailto:downscalingculture@cardiff.ac.uk>. Please feel free to get in touch with us should you have any queries. Jaspal Singh, Argyro Kantara, Dorottya Cserző??

CFP> The 10th Annual Social Informatics Research Symposium: Connecting (Epistemic) Cultures and (Intellectual) Communities
by Fichman, Pnina 11 Jul '14

11 Jul '14

Second Call for Papers and Participation The 10th Annual Social Informatics Research Symposium: Connecting (Epistemic) Cultures and (Intellectual) Communities Sponsored by: ASIS&T SIG Social Informatics and the Rob Kling Center for Social Informatics, Indiana University Saturday, November 1st, 2014, 8:30 AM - 1:00 PM Sheraton, Seattle Hotel, Seattle Washington, USA Organizers: Pnina Fichman, Indiana University (fichman(a)indiana.edu<mailto:fichman@indiana.edu>) Howard Rosenbaum, Indiana University (hrosenba(a)indiana.edu<mailto:hrosenba@indiana.edu>) School of Informatics and Computing, Indiana University, Bloomington This year we are celebrating a decade of successful and vibrant SIG-SI Research Symposia. Since 2004, established scholars, young researchers and doctoral students interested in the study of people, ICT and work and play have gathered at the SIG-SI ASIS&T Annual Research Symposium to share their work and ideas. Approximately 100 papers, posters and panels have been presented and for the past three years, we have given awards for the best papers published by Social Informatics (SI) faculty and students in the preceding years. This year we gather to celebrate a decade of intellectually challenging and engaging work in SI and hope that you will join us. Our goal remains the same: to disseminate current research and research in progress that investigates the social aspects of information and communication technologies (ICT) across all areas of ASIS&T. Building on the success of past years, the symposium includes members of many SIGs and defines “social” broadly to include critical and historical approaches as well as contemporary social analysis. It also defines “technology” broadly to include traditional technologies (i.e., paper), state-of-the-art computer systems, and mobile and pervasive devices. Submissions may include empirical, critical and theoretical work, as well as richly described practice cases and demonstrations. We are particularly interested in work that assumes a critical stance towards the Symposium’s theme but are also soliciting research on other related social informatics topics. We encourage all scholars interested in social aspects of ICT (broadly defined) to share their research and research in progress by submitting an extended abstract of their work and attending the symposium. Papers that take social informatics further in theoretical conceptualization or empirical grounding are of particular interest to SIG-SI this year as we celebrate a decade of Symposia in ASIS&T. This year’s conference theme is “Connecting Collections, Cultures, and Communities.” In keeping with this theme, the symposium is also soliciting work that focuses on the question of understanding and analyzing connections between social informatics and cognate epistemic cultures and intellectual communities from a social informatics perspective. Some of the questions we ask include: • What are the social and technological forces that enable and constrain connections between SI and cognate intellectual communities? • What are some of the ways in which we can begin to establish and maintain connections among SI and cognate epistemic cultures and intellectual communities? • What can a social informatics approach tell us about the nature of the boundaries among SI and cognate epistemic communities? • What are the challenges and opportunities of engaging in SI work? The schedule for the workshop will involve the presentations of papers and the best social informatics paper awards for 2013 (call to follow). We expect an engaging discussion with lively interactions with the audience. Deadlines: August 9, 2014: Submit a short paper (2000 words), a poster (500 words), or a panel (1000 words) by email to Howard Rosenbaum (hrosenba(a)indiana.edu<mailto:hrosenba@indiana.edu>) and Pnina Fichman (fichman(a)indiana.edu<mailto:fichman@indiana.edu>). September 2, 2014: Author notifications (in time for conference early registration (NOTE: this timeline may be adjusted when the registration dates are announced). Fees: To be determined

IR15 Travel Grant Applications
by Kendall, Lori 10 Jul '14

10 Jul '14

In order to increase the diversity of participation in the AoIR annual Internet Research (IR) conferences, the Association of Internet Researchers makes available up to four conference fee waivers and travel stipends per year. This year we will especially favor participation by scholars from the Asia / Pacific region, as well as from South America and Africa. The number of fee waivers and travel stipends will depend first of all upon the ability of the conference budget to sustain such waivers (a judgment to be made by the AoIR Executive Committee upon the advice of the AoIR Treasurer and the local organizing committee) as well as upon the quality of the applications for fee waivers. Applications for fee waivers are invited from student or faculty authors whose paper or panel proposals have already been accepted via the AoIR IR conference reviewing process. All applications should be directed to the President of AoIR (Lori Kendall, prez(a)aoir.org) and must be received by July 31, 2014. Late applications cannot be considered. Applications should be no longer than 2 pages, and must include the following information: 1) A brief description of how the author’s presentation or contribution to the AoIR IR conference will uniquely articulate and/or represent a distinctive perspective (e.g., of persons and/or cultures) otherwise unlikely to be represented at the annual AoIR Internet Research conference. 2) An explanation of the author’s distinctive circumstances that would warrant a fee waiver, and an indication that the applicant will be able to make effective use of the funds. These may include, but are by no means limited to: * exceptionally limited financial resources (e.g., as a graduate student or scholar in a non-OECD country, as a disabled person on a limited income, etc.); * exceptional limits on institutional support otherwise normally available (e.g., travel funds, grant funds, etc.); * other exceptional circumstances that render the usual AoIR IR conference fees an insurmountable obstacle to attending the IR conference in order to present one’s own work. Applicants may also include a letter of support from someone familiar with her / his circumstances, special needs, etc. Such a letter is optional, however, not a requirement. Applications will be reviewed by the AoIR Executive Committee. Fee waivers and travel stipends of up to $500 will be awarded (to be paid out after the conference) on the basis of the Executive Committee’s collective judgment as to which presentations will make the most distinctive contribution to the AoIR IR conference. In order to respect and protect the privacy of the applicants, all Executive Committee discussions and deliberations will be held in strict confidence. The AoIR Executive Committee regretfully acknowledges that there may be more fully meritorious applications than we will be able to award and support. Nonetheless, we hope that awarded fee waivers and travel stipends will not only assist deserving scholars and researchers, but also thereby enrich the IR 15.0 conference in important new ways. Lori Kendall President, AoIR
