I'll be teaching a section of a course, Computer Mediated Communication, in the Fall and would like recommendations for textbooks, readers, and other material. The person who has been teaching the course at my school has used Online Communication by Wood & Smith. But, since this was last revised in 2005, it is a bit dated. Also, I'd really like to use a text that has a robust companion web site, test item file and/or PPTs. As the class is housed in the Department of Communications, I will be exploring the social effects of different computer-supported communication technologies. However, I will, via text or other material, want to expose the students to the "workings" of some CMC. That might be participating in self help groups on Face Book or Yahoo Groups, developing a Blog with Word Press, editing articles on Wikipedia or even doing some simple HTML coding. Soliciting Submissions to the IR15 Doctoral Colloquium

The Association of Internet Researchers believes that its emerging researchers are the best in the disparate fields that constitute the field/s. In keeping with its commitment to students’ scholarship, we continue the tradition of bringing emerging and established scholars together through the Internet Research 15.0 Doctoral Colloquium (#IR15DC). The IR15DC offers PhD students working in internet research or a related field a special, day-long forum, to be convened on 22 October 2014 (IR15’s designated “Pre Conference Event” day). For many years, this pre-conference event has provided students with the opportunity to a concentrated amount of time with senior scholars to share research projects, address methodological and theoretical challenges, and exchange informal advice on juggling the multiple pressures associated with job searching, publishing, and finishing the dissertation. This year, Mary L. Gray will coordinate IR15DC. She will be joined by a diverse group of colleagues representing the range of AoIR scholarship. The final list of IR15DC Mentors will be announced 1 June (if you plan to attend IR15 and would like to be considered for a spot as a Senior Mentor, please contact Mary ASAP directly at mLg {at} microsoft {dot} com). Interested students should prepare a) a two-page summary of your research. This should provide a context for the research, describe the methods being used, the progress to date, and primary concerns and issues; and b) A brief statement indicating why you want to participate in this doctoral colloquium and what you hope to get out of it. The 2014 Steve Jones Internet Research Lecture features Ian Bogost, at 1:30 pm on Sunday, May 25 in Seattle Sheraton, Redwood A, during the International Communication Association’s 64th Annual Conference, Seattle, May 22 - 26. Ian Bogost is a video game designer, critic and researcher. He holds a joint professorship in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication and in Interactive Computing in the College of Computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he is the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts Distinguished Chair in Media Studies. He is a founding partner at Persuasive Games. His research and writing consider video games as an expressive medium, and his creative practice focuses on games about social and political issues, including airport security, consumer debt, disaffected workers, the petroleum industry, suburban errands, pandemic flu and tort reform. In his lecture, Bogost states that thoughts are things. A word that we'd first associate with matter so quickly becomes one of matters, of affairs, incidents, penchants, circumstances, activities, notions. Bogost discusses, how we can learn to live with things, where things mean stuff rather than ideas and events? How do we approach a world so replete, so overburdened with stuff that it's literally falling apart from the wear? How do we think of ourselves as really just another thing among others, rather than their masters and mistresses? How can we respect things for what they are, irrespective of our contact or concern, and how do we really do so, not just late one weird night, but every day, habitually, for real? And how do we do so without descending into the anguish of nihilism, without simply concluding that the universe is fundamentally indifferent? MobileHCI brings together people from diverse areas which provides a multidisciplinary forum for academics, hardware and software developers, designers and practitioners to discuss the challenges and potential solutions for effective interaction with and through mobile devices, applications, and services. MobileHCI maintains a small number of tracks along with a wide range of other program aspects to encourage the exchange of research results, ideas and future research endeavours. Penetration testing is an “ethical hacking” activity intended to improve an organisations defences against cybercrime. Penetration testing is the evaluation of the resistance of an information system to external threats. The goal of the project is to develop a research – with direct collaboration between sociology and computer security - that will study the social and organisational practices of penetration testing and broaden our understanding of what it means for information systems to be secure. We welcome applicants from a range of disciplinary backgrounds (e.g. Sociology, Social Sciences, Media Studies – but not limited to these). The Studentship will commence in September 2014 for a period of up to 3.5 years.
