Those at the symposium were motivated by a passion for music, a fascination with technology and culture, and a concern for how music technology is now developing. Recognizing the fertility of music technology as a subject that bridges computational, scientific, social scientific and humanistic approaches, we looked for common ground across those fields. We debated and developed a set of shared principles about the future of music technology. Built from the notes of that day’s event, and revised together in the weeks that followed, this manifesto is the collaboratively-authored product of this meeting. The symposium was organized by Nancy Baym, Microsoft Research, and Jonathan Sterne, McGill University.

This is a reminder to submit to the special issue of IJGCMS on transmedia and games. The full manuscript is due on June 1st, which is less than two weeks away! -- The International Journal of Gaming and Computer-Mediated Simulations (http://www.igi-global.com/ijgcms) announces a call for papers for a special issue dedicated to the topic of Transmedia and Games guest edited by Dr. Karen Schrier (Marist College, New York). In this special issue of IJGCMS, we invite submissions that help us grapple with the relationship between transmedia and games. Transmedia means “across media,” (Jenkins, 2011), so it could refer to storytelling across media, or playing, writing, branding, learning, selling, creating and thinking across media, as well. Perspectives from a variety of fields—including education, design, computer science, advertising, communication, media studies, cultural studies, psychology or economics—are all welcome. The purpose of this special issue is to address these types of questions, and consider the relationship between transmedia and games. Authors are invited to submit manuscripts that: · Present empirical findings on the use of transmedia and games · Further our theoretical knowledge of games and transmedia · Conduct meta-analyses of existing research on transmedia and games · Present innovative case studies related to games and transmedia · Explore design, production, or implementation models or frameworks in relation to transmedia and games Possible topics to consider, in relation to transmedia, are: · ARGs · Learning and education · Fan, player, and audience participation · Business and funding models · Design and world creation · Global and local participation · Motivational factors · Writing and storytelling · Indie development · Branding and marketing · Co-creation between designers and players · Ethical implications · Distinctions among franchises, seriality, adaptations, and transmedia · Multimodality and intertextuality · Engagement, fun, and flow · Defining and redefining transmedia · Production and design processes Potential authors are encouraged to contact Dr. Schrier (Karen.Schrier(a)marist.edu) to ask about the appropriateness of their topic. Call for Abstracts for Chapters Volume 2 of the International Handbook of Internet Research

Apologies for crossposting, please distribute as appropriate: Call for Abstracts for Chapters Volume 2 of the International Handbook of Internet Research (editors Jeremy Hunsinger, Lisbeth Klastrup, and Matthew Allen) Abstracts due June 1 2014; full chapters due Sept. 1 2015 After the remarkable success of the first International Handbook of Internet Research (2010), Springer has contracted with its editors to produce a second volume. This new volume will be arranged in three sections, that address one of three different aspects of internet research: foundations, futures, and critiques. Each of these meta-themes will have its own section of the new handbook. Foundations will approach a method, a theory, a perspective, a topic or field that has been and is still a location of significant internet research. These chapters will engage with the current and historical scholarly literature through extended reviews and also as a way of developing insights into the internet and internet research. Futures will engage with the directions the field of internet research might take over the next five years. These chapters will engage current methods, topics, perspectives, or fields that will expand and re-invent the field of internet research, particularly in light of emerging social and technological trends. The material for these chapters will define the topic they describe within the framework of internet research so that it can be understand as a place of future inquiry. Critique chapters will define and develop critical positions in the field of internet research. They can engage a theoretical perspective, a methodological perspective, a historical trend or topic in internet research and provide a critical perspective. These chapters might also define one type of critical perspective, tradition, or field in the field of internet research. We value the way in which this call for papers will itself shape the contents, themes, and coverage of the Handbook. We encourage potential authors to present abstracts that will consolidate current internet research, critically analyse its directions past and future, and re-invent the field for the decade to come. Contributions about the internet and internet research are sought from scholars in any discipline, and from many points of view. We therefore invite internet researchers working within the fields of communication, culture, politics, sociology, law and privacy, aesthetics, games and play, surveillance and mobility, amongst others, to consider contributing to the volume. Initially, we ask scholars and researchers to submit an 500 word abstract detailing their own chapter for one of the three sections outlined above. The abstract must follow the format presented below. After the initial round of submissions, there may be a further call for papers and/or approaches to individuals to complete the volume. The final chapters will be chosen from the submitted abstracts by the editors or invited by the editors. The chapter writers will be notified of acceptance by January 1st, 2015. The chapters will be due September 2015, should be between 6,000 and 10,000 words (inclusive of references, biographical statement and all other text). Call for Papers May 2015 Special Issue of Journal of Faculty Development Guest Edited by: Russell Carpenter, Eastern Kentucky University Theme: Social Media in Pedagogy and Practice: Networked Teaching and Learning While many forms of social media are no longer considered “new,” their instructional uses continue to both inspire and challenge faculty and students. A variety of social media permeate the classroom whether used for pedagogical or personal purposes. Many instructors also use social media in their personal lives, but its role and potential in the classroom are still evolving. While the dynamic nature of social media provides a number of pedagogical opportunities to engage students in productive ways, integrating social media into class sessions and projects also presents new challenges not faced with other instructional technologies. This special issue invites scholars to highlight the most successful and promising strategies for integrating social media into the classroom while also considering the challenges these technologies present for teaching and learning. Authors might consider the best practices for integrating social media into the classroom for instructional purposes, theories and principles that support the decision to incorporate social media into classroom settings, challenges faced and approaches for overcoming these challenges, and projects that incorporate social media along with learning outcomes. Submissions might also explore, theorize, and assess innovative concepts, approaches, and strategies for classroom instruction using social media. Framing questions can include but are not limited to: ● What classroom activities are best suited for implementing social media? What specific projects might incorporate social media and how were these projects assessed? ● What are the best practices for using social media for instruction? ● How might various forms of social media engage student learning outcomes? What factors should instructors consider when deciding whether to employ social media? ● What are the theoretical frameworks for teaching with social media and how might they inform instruction? military communications?

Hi all, One of our Master¹s students wants to examine how businesses engaged in military production (including weapons and weapons systems) re-present themselves in their public communications - especially vis-a-vis (presumed) national reputations for / ostensible interests in peacemaking. This work is inspired by a previous MA thesis here examining how two prominent Norwegian military production companies re-present themselves in a country more widely known for the Nobel Peace Prize (and, for example, whose major national holiday - 17th of May - celebrates national independence primarily through children¹s parades: no military fly-overs, no military units in the parade, no military equipment on display, etc.) The focus, however, will be on a major weapons company in the U.S., and using a different method of analysis (on the ethos / rhetoric at work, rather than a frame analysis). We would be extremely grateful for 1) any suggestions for helpful research and related academic sources that might contribute? And/or 2) if anyone has good contacts with colleagues who work within these industries and who might be willing to be interviewed, suggestions along these lines would also be greatly appreciated. FWIW: I¹ll be attending the upcoming ICA, including two days of pre-conferences. If anyone would like to meet up over coffee or beer to talk about this project, I¹d be delighted. Looking for research on the negative well-being effects of News Feed browsing

Hi everyone (this is my first post to air-l!), I've been doing a bit of work looking into the finding by a few researchers including Burke et al. that News Feed browsing (and other forms of passive consumption in social networks) leads to lower well-being outcomes. Am trying to expand my horizons on the work that's been done exploring the possible causes of this effect; in interviews with Facebook users, for example, I've heard people talk about feeling like time on FB is wasted, or like they're seeing another (unattractive, irritating) side of their friends. Then, more academically, are suggestions that social comparison (everyone's cheery and accomplished and I compare unfavorably with that) or social transparency (I can see when my friends are hanging out without me) might also play a role. Google Scholar searches and the like haven't turned up much for me, but maybe (probably) I'm missing something—does anyone have work in this area that they can point me to, or suggestions of good work by others?
