Reminder - two weeks to deadline! Concepts and Methods Workshop: Structural Approaches to Online Communities and Networks News & Media Research Centre, University of Canberra Wednesday 27 August 2014 In this workshop graduate students and early-career researchers will have the opportunity to present their work (including work-in-progress) and obtain feedback from a panel of specialists. The workshop will be open to the public. The workshop has two main objectives. First, we wish to assess to what extent the methodological and conceptual tools used to analyse online communities can be applied to the personal networking behaviour of social media users. Second, we are interested in fostering a dialogue between, broadly speaking, ethnographic ("qualitative") and structural ("quantitative") researchers. Specialist panel: Professor Caroline Haythornthwaite, School of Library, Archival and Information Studies, The iSchool at The University of British Columbia Associate Professor Robert Ackland, Research School of Social Sciences, Australian National University Associate Professor Mathieu O'Neil, Faculty of Arts and Design, University of Canberra Panel members will discuss some of the latest conceptual and methodological developments in web social science, social network analysis, and online field theory. In addition, the workshop will represent an opportunity to explore connections and confrontations with: -content analysis -critical and feminist approaches -diffusion and information cascades -frame analysis -issue ballistics -mixed methods -organizational behaviour -sentiment analysis -social influence Applicants are encouraged to focus on key characteristics of online communities and networks, including but not limited to: -activist, diasporic and health communities -codes of conduct, rules and norms -emergence and disappearance -influentials and followers -mobilization and engagement -participant capabilities and skills -personal and collective identity -topologies of online communities Submission process: Proposals should be emailed to Mathieu O'Neil <mathieu[dot]oneil[at]canberra[dot]edu[dot]au> by 31 May 2014. As the research may not be complete, we do not expect abstracts to include all findings and conclusions. However abstracts should outline what kind of findings and conclusions the authors expect to present. Specifically the abstract should include: -the name, institutional affiliation, email address and contact telephone number of the presenter(s) -a title -a description of the paper's core topic, case, and/or argument -the methodological approach and theoretical background -the paper's relevance to related academic literature -expected findings or conclusions Proposal length should not exceed 400 words. *CFP: Commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of Lord of the Rings (The Mithril Turtle)* 2014 is the sixtieth anniversary of *Lord of the Rings*. The Mithril Turtle is the University of Maryland College Park’s commemoration of this important literary and cultural milestone. A variety of events are planned for September 1 – October 17, 2014. Among these is an interdisciplinary discussion series. Tolkien's created world is realistically and compellingly realized, making it ideal for creative exploration of a wide range of disciplines. We invite proposals that use the lens of *Lord of the Rings* and Middle-earth to focus attention upon cutting edge research and scholarship. Topics might include (but are not limited to): · Mithril and Materials Science: How close are we? [Materials Science] · Does formal education exist in Middle-earth? Digital Scholarship: Invitation to my Blogged Doctoral Exam

Dear Air-L Members, First, let me introduce myself to the wider community, since this is my first post here... my name is Jason Young, and I am currently a graduate student in Geography at the University of Washington. While I am still in the beginning stages of my PhD program, I am planning to use my doctoral research to explore the implications of digital technologies for Inuit as they engage in politics of environmentalism in the Arctic. I am writing to the listserv because I would like to invite you all to participate in a digital, scholarly experiment that I started last week. I have become increasingly interested in leveraging digital technologies to open up traditionally closed aspects of the graduate experience. In this spirit I decided to blog an aspect of my graduate work which is traditionally only open to the members of my doctoral community. In particular I blogged my Preliminary Examination this past weekend, which is essentially a practice version of our General or Comprehensive Exams. This exam is designed to explore what knowledge I currently have of relevant literature, in order to suggest further readings which will help me progress in my intellectual development. Opening the Exam process to many eyes has left me feeling a little vulnerable, especially since Prelims is designed to expose holes in my current academic knowledge. However, I am really hoping that this process might help me to gain access to and learn from a wide range of perspectives on my work, and also perhaps to provide a resource for other students as they go through similar exam processes. I thought Air-L might be a good target audience, both because you all might be interested in this type of digital scholarship and also because most of my scholarship has been limited to geographical understandings of technology. I would love suggestions and ideas on readings, etc., which might help me to explore the great work going on across other disciplines. Shelia Postdoctoral Fellowship in Social Impacts of Technology at Michigan State University Posting #8030 Dr. Shelia Cotten, a professor in the Telecommunication, Information Studies, and Media (TISM) department at Michigan State University (MSU), is seeking to hire a Postdoctoral Fellow for a 1 year position. The position is available beginning as soon as July 1, 2014. The postdoc will work with Dr. Cotten to analyze data from existing research projects and to collect survey, interview, and observational data on upcoming research projects. Projects focus on technology usage across the life course and the social impacts of this usage, thus experience studying either specific age groups, and/or the impacts of technology use, would be preferable but is not required. Dr. Cotten studies the intersections of technology use and health. With funding from the National Science Foundation, she has also collected data on one of the largest One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) XO laptop disseminations in the United States. She, with funding from a large National Institute on Aging grant, has conducted a randomized trial to determine the impacts on quality of life of training older adults in assisted and independent living communities to use computers and the Internet. Her current NSF-funded project, Integrating Computing Across the Curriculum (ICAC), a large school system intervention, focuses on outcomes of computer technology and computer technology training programs for students and teachers. Applicants must have defended their dissertation prior to beginning the postdoctoral fellowship. A doctoral degree in Sociology, Psychology, Communication, New Media, Information Science or a related field is required. Candidates must have (1) strong quantitative analysis skills, (2) experience writing manuscripts, and (3) good organizational and time management skills. Prior publications and grant writing experience will enhance the application. The Postdoctoral Fellow is a 12 month, full-time appointment, with salary up to $45,000 depending upon qualifications. In critical media and communications research there has been a marked increase in interest in web-based ways of gathering, generating, and visualizing knowledge. These include digital tools that navigate and map the web itself, infographics, and interactive maps for research, policy-making, activism and advocacy. These techniques make use of official databases but increasingly work with "Big Data" as well as real-time forms of data-gathering through "crowdsourcing" to raise awareness about humanitarian crises, natural disasters, as well as mobilise people around a range of political and social issues. Humanitarian, environmental, and commercial uses of digital tracking, mapping, and crowdsourcing are not always compatible with each other, and they also raise challenging questions about freedom of expression, privacy, intellectual property rights, and research ethics based on informed consent. Moreover, the politics of ownership and control of our data and the data of others is becoming more urgent as large corporations and governments can accumulate this data and then grant or restrict access to it in non-accountable ways. 3rd-year PhD student seeking postdocs in privacy-related research: I’m currently investigating difference in online disclosure of personal information between Americans and Estonians during Ecommerce. Why Estonia? Estonia is considered one of the most technologically developed and digitally connected societies in the world, and investigating their perceptions of disclosing personal information online may provide insights for other societies as they implement the models already in place in Estonia. I’m interested in current postdoc opportunities related to online privacy, smart objects, or ethics of data mining. As an American student, my knowledgeable of related global research centers is somewhat limited.
