by Michael Zimmer 18 Jun '14

Forwarding CFP for 'The Governance of Digital Technology, Big Data, and the Internet: New Roles and Responsibilities for Business' in Business & Society. Apologies for cross-posts. -- Michael Zimmer, PhD Assistant Professor, School of Information Studies Director, Center for Information Policy Research University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee e: zimmerm(a)uwm.edu w: www.michaelzimmer.org Begin forwarded message: Call for Papers: Special Issue of Business & Society The Governance of Digital Technology, Big Data, and the Internet: New Roles and Responsibilities for Business Guest editors:Mikkel Flyverbom, Copenhagen Business School Ronald Deibert, Citizen Lab, Munk School of Global Affairs, University of Toronto Dirk Matten, Schulich School of Business, York University, Toronto Background The importance of digital technologies for social and economic developments and a growing focus on data collection and privacy concerns have made the internet a salient and visible issue in global politics. Recent developments, such as the information released by Edward Snowden and others, have increased the awareness that the current approach of governments and business to the governance of the internet and the adjacent technological spaces raises a host of ethical issues. Examples include states tracking citizens online, governments filtering or turning off the internet at will, and corporations using personal data for commercial purposes. The significance and challenges of the digital age have been further accentuated by a string of highly exposed cases of surveillance and a growing concern about how states and corporations use digital traces to do various sorts of tracking and profiling of citizens and users. Despite this growing focus on digital formations, surprisingly little research has explored questions about the relations between business, governance and the internet. This special issue of Business & Society therefore invites scholars to explore what some have referred to as the ‘internet-industrial complex’ – the intersections between business, states and other actors in the shaping, development and governance of the internet. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to the following aspects: · The unclear relations between companies and governments in the internet domain; · The roles and responsibilities of very visible internet companies such as Google and Facebook; · The largely covert operations of state- and private actors in internet surveillance, data aggregation and profiling; · Questions of internet governance, such as new policy initiatives challenging the historical US control over core components of the internet infrastructure; · Organizational developments, such as the emergence of multi-stakeholder forums, where business, governments and civil society actors seek to shape the internet domain; The growing importance of large internet companies in advocacy, policy debates and lobbying efforts. These developments include the increasingly visible and well-resourced presence of internet companies and internet-focused think tanks in settings such as Washington DC and Brussels, and the worldwide spread of policy directors, research centers and advocacy efforts funded by internet companies; · The rapidly growing ecosystem of mobile phones and applications which allow for new communications and information experiences – even in in countries that have weak democracies or authoritarian regimes; · New questions about tracking and data sharing in mobile applications which can (and sometimes do) give themselves permission to access a wide range of users’ data contained in their devices, from contacts, to archives of text messages, to images and videos as well as geo-location. Whether, how, and how often such data is shared with governments in particular jurisdictions, and to what extent device and application manufacturers proactively take steps to either filter or monitor users, are some of the most important questions of concerning government-private sector interaction; · The growing focus on data as a resource for economic, organizational and regulatory developments. In this area, we see not only widespread excitement about ‘big data’, but also a growing focus on data protection and privacy, and an emergent pressure for corporations to be more transparent about their collection, use and recirculation of data; · The potential and real benefits of internet usage and technological developments for wider society, and reflections on future avenues and possibilities for the governance of the internet. Types of Submissions This special issue seeks to expand our knowledge of the intersections between business management, global governance and the digital domain. As such it invites contributions from a broad range of social and political science disciplines, including business, law, politics, international relations, sociology, and philosophy. The Special Issue will feature papers that pave new empirical and conceptual ground in this emergent field of research. We seek both papers that deliver in-depth empirical explorations of the topic and papers providing theoretical conceptualization, analytical vocabularies and innovative methods for the understanding of the intersection between business and governance in the internet domain. We particularly encourage submissions that develop our theoretical understanding of the phenomena by showcasing relevant conceptual and analytical approaches, such as (but not limited to) institutional theory, actor-network theory, cultural theory. This may include a variety of theoretical approaches from various social science disciplines including media studies, governance, organization and communication. Submission process and schedule · Authors should submit their manuscripts through ScholarOne Manuscripts by March 1st, 2015 to http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/bas. · Be sure to specify in the cover letter document that the manuscript is for the special issue on “Governance of Digital Technology.” · Manuscripts should be prepared following the Business & Society author guidelines: http://www.sagepub.com/journals/Journal200878/manuscriptSubmission. · All articles will be double-blind peer reviewed by at least three anonymous referees. · The editors welcome informal enquiries related to the proposed topics. · Authors of papers selected for publication will be invited for a manuscript development workshop (time and location TBA) before the final submission is due. Routledge compendium of major mobile communication articles
by Rich Ling 18 Jun '14

18 Jun '14

Dear all, Along with Gerard Goggin and Larisa Hjorth, I am helping to pull together a Routledge compendium of articles that encompasses the major works in mobile communication. I have my ideas as to which articles are most central, there is, for example the early article by Lana Rakow and Vija Navarro on the gendering of the mobile and Horst and Miller on Jamaica. However, I am always interested to hear what others might think. Please let me know which articles that have been the most important in developing the study of mobile communication and mobile media. -- Rich L.

CFP - Political Studies Association, Media & Politics Group Annual Conference
by Andy 18 Jun '14

18 Jun '14

Hello Colleagues, A reminder: deadline for abstracts is 1 July 2014. Please publicise to your PhD students as well - this is a very supportive space for postgraduate work to be discussed (alongside leading luminaries) and there are some PG travel bursaries and prizes to boot. We look forward to welcoming you to autumnal Wales! Best wishes, Andy *Political Studies Association Media & Politics Group* *Annual Conference* *Theme: Media, Persuasion and Human Rights* *Hosted by Network for Media & Persuasive Communication* *Bangor University, Bangor, N.Wales* *Call for Papers* *Conference Date: *Mon. 10th - Tues. 11th Nov. 2014 *Website: * http://www.bangor.ac.uk/creative_industries/media-persuasion/index.php.en *Email: *mediapoliticsconference(a)bangor.ac.uk We welcome papers on any aspect of Media and Politics, or on this year’s conference theme of Media, Persuasion and Human Rights. While human rights may appear inalienable in international law and covenants, in fact they are sites of contestation, conflict and redefinition, variably implemented across the globe. Reflecting our theme, our key note speakers include Prof. Jon Silverman (University of Bedfordshire) who is currently working on the influence of the media's reporting of war crimes trials in West Africa on civil society. We seek papers on any of the following themes. 1. *Media and Politics* - any aspect. 2. *Media, Persuasion* *and Human Rights*, including: a) *Mediating Norms.* Jeremy Bentham once called human rights ‘nonsense upon stilts’. What is the philosophical status of human rights and how are deontic norms complicated, challenged and threatened by current geo-political events and their mediation? Are liberal social aspirations being redefined and eroded? Did they ever exist? What betterment do we have to aim for today? b) *Communicating Trade-offs.* When governments balance rights against each other (eg trading-off the right to privacy or freedom from torture in exchange for national security), how do the media respond? How does the complexity of decision-making and trade-offs get communicated? What are decision-makers’ insights on balancing and communicating rights? c) *Contestation and Articulation*. What human rights are privileged by, and contested through, the media? How have these changed over time? How do articulatory struggles play out across the media, and via what persuasive ‘actants’, including NGOs, investigative journalists, the public, lawyers, companies, corporations, governments, and international governance bodies? d) *Media Forms*. How does the struggle over articulation vary across different media forms and genres? How do minority media and the rise of mass self-broadcasting enable perverted viewing and production (eg torture porn, tour of duty war mementos), and with what implications for the normalization of abnormal situations (too taboo for mass view), and for the social enactment of human rights? e) *New Media, New Rights?* What novel opportunities and challenges do new media technologies present for human rights that intrinsically rely on the media, such as the right to privacy and freedom of speech? f) *Mobilisation*. In what ways do media inform and mobilise the public regarding their human rights? This may range from the practices of bearing witness (eg sousveillant communication); to the generation of empathy, intimacy, and a new solidarity through media forms that invoke engagement, identification and pleasure (eg Twitter, film, reality TV, comedy, music)? g) *Gender*. Is there such as thing as 'gendered' human rights? How does gender impact and influence mediated construction of human rights around the globe? How has the media engaged in the representation of gendered and sexualised human rights abuses (for example mass rape, comfort women, sex trafficking and enforced prostitution)? h) *Cultural Imperialism?* What are non-western insights on human rights liberal discourse, and how are these dealt with in various national and trans-national institutions ranging from satellite TV to the International Criminal Court? We encourage diverse responses to the theme, but are especially interested in interdisciplinary responses, not least from policy-makers, activists, philosophers, information-management specialists, computer scientists, journalists, security analysts, and those with expertise in law or politics. *Abstract submission* All proposals should include the following: title and name, institutional affiliation and address, and email address; together with, a paper title, an abstract of not more than 300 words, an indication of which theme(s) you are addressing, and up to five key words about your paper. Please also indicate whether or not you are a postgraduate student. Please indicate which section you wish your proposal to be considered under: 1. 10-15 minute panel presentation; 2. Practice-based work (15 mins - comprising showing of practice-based piece (or an extract) plus any accompanying discussion/context). Abstracts should be sent by 1st July to mediapoliticsconference(a)bangor.ac.uk All abstracts will undergo peer review and decisions on papers will be given within 3 weeks of the submission deadline. *Postgraduate Travel Bursaries* There are 3 travel bursaries of £100 each to support the travel expenses of postgraduate students (who must be PSA members to be eligible) to the November conference. This will be awarded competitively based on quality of submitted abstracts. *Postgraduates & James Thomas Memorial Prize (Prize **£100**)* Postgraduate students are invited to submit a full paper that will be entered into the James Thomas Memorial Prize. This annual award is presented to the most outstanding paper by a postgraduate student at the Media and Politics Group Annual Conference. While abstracts must be submitted by 1st July, full papers must be submitted by 1 October 2014, to allow time for them to be reviewed by the MPG conveners. A Canadian-American sociologist, his overarching interest is in the paradigm shift from group-centered relations to networked individualism. His research examines virtual community, the virtual workplace, social support, community, kinship, friendship, and social network theory and methods. His methodological contributions have been for the analysis of ego-centered or "personal" networks - defined from the standpoint of an individual. This calls for somewhat different techniques than the more common social network practice of analysing a single large network. Barry Wellman said "I am deeply honoured by this. And want to pay tribute to the many NetLab members - and Networked co-author Lee Rainie - who have been my wonderful intellectual playmates through the years." OII Acting Director, Dr Victoria Nash said "Barry Wellman's approach to studying the networks that connect us as individuals has had a profound effect on the field of Internet research, reflected in much of the work of our colleagues and students. We are delighted to honour his contribution today. " The top-cited Canadian sociologist, Wellman's current work continues to focus on the interplay between information and communication technologies, especially the Internet, social relations and social structure. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2007. The award will be presented on 7th November in Oxford, at an awards dinner and ceremony that also includes Lifetime Achievement awards for Sir Tim Berners Lee and Dame Stephanie Shirley.

Announcing DML Competition's Trust Challenge: Building Trust in Connected Learning Environments #dmltrust
by Sheryl Grant 17 Jun '14

17 Jun '14

What could be more important than trust? Trust is at the heart of every meaningful learning experience, whether it's between educator and student, mentor and learner, or peers and their learning networks. As learners become more immersed in digital learning experiences, trust has also become increasingly important in connected learning environments. The press release announcing the Trust Challenge, the fifth Digital Media and Learning Competition, details how the MacArthur Foundation and HASTAC are responding to the Aspen Institute Task Force's report about Learners and the Internet, particularly challenges facing trust in connected learning environments. The $1.2 Million Learning Challenge: Building Trust Online Fifth Digital Media & Learning Competition responds to Aspen report citing the need for a safe and open internet to foster learning WASHINGTON – June 17, 2014 – HASTAC and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, responding to a landmark Aspen Institute report, announced a $1.2 million challenge to foster trust in online learning environments and help educators harness one of the most powerful tools of the digital age—online networks. The 5th Digital Media and Learning Competition, dubbed The Trust Challenge, will offer year-long development grants of up to $150,000 to teams with the most promising innovations for fostering trusted learning environments online. The open invitation for proposals is supported by the MacArthur Foundation through a grant to the University of California, Irvine, administered by HASTAC, an alliance of more than 14,000 humanists, artists, social scientists, scientists and technologists working together to transform the future of learning. The Trust Challenge is a response to a new report by the Aspen Institute Task Force on Learning and the Internet that called for innovations that enable people to pursue learning experiences online in an environment that is safe and private. The task force focused on American education, but the Trust Challenge is an international competition because the challenge is global. “The Aspen Institute Task Force on Learning and the Internet has highlighted the transformative role that digital media can play in helping every learner to reach his or her full potential,” said David Theo Goldberg, a HASTAC board member and the director of the University of California Humanities Research Institute. “Our competition seeks to advance solutions that build the trusted environments learners need online so they can safely and confidently access the rich learning opportunities the Internet affords.” In the Task Force report, Learner at the Center of a Networked World, also made public on Thursday, Honorary Co-Chairs Jeb Bush and Rosario Dawson argue a trusted online environment is necessary for effective learning. “Technology should revolve around the learner, not the other way around,” they wrote. “And the learner should possess the digital age literacy tools to use and understand the media in both the virtual and physical worlds.” The Aspen Institute report envisions a future of openness and innovation in education if America can shift away from a fear-based approach to using the Internet that unwittingly blocks access to valuable learning resources. “Just as the digital revolution changed many industries, its promise is now being realized in learning environments inside and outside schools,” said Connie Yowell, MacArthur’s Director of Education and a leading proponent of Connected Learning. “The Internet is a vital link, and innovative educators are helping learners create unique and personalized learning pathways as they follow their interests online, connect to supportive peers and mentors, and become the creative makers and producers today’s economy rewards. Our goal is to support this explosion of interest-driven learning by ensuring all learners can safely and confidently leverage these rich digital resources.” The Trust Challenge is open to museums, libraries, school districts, schools, higher education institutions, community organizations, developers, researchers and others committed to creative, open connected learning. Successful projects will develop digital projects and tools designed to build privacy, security, and safety into its digital offerings and build awareness around data and trust. Projects might include web or online applications, digital badge systems, data management platforms, online learning content or other innovations. Winners will receive grants of $10,000 to $150,000 as well as a year of programming designed to support successful project development. Grantees will be networked with each other and more broadly into a highly innovative, cross-disciplinary community of technologists, educators, scholars and leading thinkers. Organizations and institutions can also win three $5,000 People’s Choice Awards that will support the purchase of approved technology. People’s Choice Winners will be determined by an online vote. Call for Chapters: Alternate Reality Games and the Cusp of Digital Gameplay
by Antero Garcia 17 Jun '14

17 Jun '14

*Call for Chapters: Alternate Reality Games and the Cusp of Digital Gameplay* Series: Approaches to Digital Game Studies, Bloomsbury Editors: Antero Garcia, Colorado State University & Greg Niemeyer, University of California, Berkeley Alternate Reality Games (ARGs) challenge what players understand as “real.” Though prominent examples of ARGs have persisted over the past two decades, only recently have ARGs come to the prominence as a unique and highly visible digital game genre. Adopting many of the same strategies as online video games, ARGs blur the distinction between the “real” and the “virtual.” We seek chapter proposals for a proposed collection that explores and defines the possibilities of ARGs. With ARGs continuing to be an important and blurred space between digital and physical gameplay, this collection offers clear analysis of game design, implementation, and ramifications for game studies. Divided into three distinct sections (noted below), this collection emphasizes first hand accounts by leading ARG creators, scholarly analysis of the meaning behind ARGs from noted critics and researchers, and explication of emerging visualization and data collection methodologies. We are particularly interested in cultivating research from various disciplinary perspectives; by balancing the voices of designers, players, and researchers, this work highlights how the Alternate Reality Game genre is transforming the ways we play and interact today. We seek chapter proposals that fit within one of the following three book sections: *Section One – Development and Execution* Chapters in this section of the book detail the design and implementation of ARGs. Authors pay attention to specific fictions, audiences, and goals within these ARGs and offer a clear step-by-step behind the scenes look at how these game designers engineer new modes of play and participation. *Section Two – Alternating Reality – how ARGs are changing games and society* These chapters focus on analysis and critique of ARGs. While some chapters may focus on specific games, other chapters in this section invoke larger trends in ARGs. *Section Three – Data Visualization and Collection* As the ARG genre is dependent on responding to the ways participants interact with one another and with a story’s content, this section of the book looks at how we interpret and construct data. In particular, the genre of digital games is reinventing new data visualization methodologies and this section should illuminate ways games display information during play and as synopsis after a game concludes. This edited volume has received initial interest from the Digital Game Studies series editors and we are currently seeking additional chapters to share with the editors and secure a book contract. *The deadline for proposals of 300-500 words is August 15, 2014. Please email your abstract and a 100 word biography to anterobot(a)gmail.com <anterobot(a)gmail.com> (please indicate to which section of the book your proposal is directed). All authors will be notified of acceptance by September 2nd and full chapter manuscripts would be due in April, 2015. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions at the above address.* -- Antero Garcia, Ph.D. Assistant Professor of English Education Ethnic Studies Faculty Associate English Department, Colorado State University 359 Eddy Building Campus Delivery 1773 Fort Collins, CO 80523-1773 http://www.antero.org/

Re: [Air-L] Best way to work with translation provider and Qualtrics?
by Marco Toledo Bastos 16 Jun '14

16 Jun '14

Hi Cory, You don't have to grant the translator access to your account (and you shouldn't). If the tab "Collaboration" is available for your survey (My Surveys >> Tasks), you can simply type the translator's email and she'll be granted access to the survey. Qualtrics allow for this kind of collaboration even if the invited user is not under the same license as you. More details here: http://www.qualtrics.com/university/researchsuite/basic-building/getting-sta rted/collaboration/ I've never tried this workaround by transferring CSV files back and forth between you and another user, but I wonder how you're planning to merge the two survey questionnaires later on. That looks like an exhausting task. -- mtb -----Original Message----- Date: Fri, 13 Jun 2014 17:05:20 +0000 From: "Robinson,Cory" <cory.Robinson(a)colostate.edu> To: "air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org" <air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org> Subject: [Air-L] Best way to work with translation provider and Qualtrics? I?m preparing a cross-national survey using Qualtrics.com, and will deploy the survey in two languages. My translation provider is not familiar with the Qualtrics platform, and I?m leery of providing access to my account. Does anyone have recommendations for how to best translate a survey without having to provide account access to the translator? It does appear that Qualtrics allows one to download the survey as a CSV file, and then create a second survey upon importing a CSV file. A possible workflow: 1. Send the CSV file in the first language to the translator, 2. having translation completed on the sent file, 3. and then creating the second language survey by uploading the translated CSV file to Quatrics. Open and grateful for any suggestions! - Cory Robinson -- Stephen Cory Robinson cory.robinson(a)colostate.edu<mailto:cory.robinson@colostate.edu> Office: Clark C258A http://colostate.academia.edu/StephenCoryRobinson
