CFP: HICSS Minitrack: Citizen Journalism and Social Media Archiving [REMINDER, DUE 15th June]
by Natalie Harrower 09 Jun '14

09 Jun '14

Dear AoiR-ists: We're interested in your papers! REMINDER of CFP due 15th JUNE 2014: HICSS Minitrack: Citizen Journalism and Social Media Archiving http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/HICSS_48/Tracks/DSM/DSMCitizen.pdf Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) 48 January 5-8, 2015, Grand Hyatt, Kauai, Hawaii Submissions via the HICSS conference system: http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_48/apahome48.htm Twitter hashtag: #hicss_sja Focus: This multidisciplinary minitrack is part of Digital and Social Media track and is focused on the areas of citizen/social journalism and social media archiving, which pose distinct, yet complementary, research challenges. By pairing these topics in one multidisciplinary minitrack we hope to stimulate an exchange of ideas between multiple domains of research and industry, including news media, digital archiving and preservation, social network analysis, semantic web and linked data, communication studies and cultural studies. To this end we welcome papers in either of these two areas or papers that address their intersection. In this minitrack we are interested in addressing a variety of research questions from both theoretical and pragmatic perspectives. For example, how we can best utilize social media for news production? What technologies can we use for breaking news detection, filtering, aggregation and contextualization? How can we assess the veracity of social media content and sources? What moral, legal, and ethical issues arise when professional journalists use social media as a source? How can we organize, interpret, and retain a record of social media around news events? What does this record contribute to our larger understanding of news, and the writing of news? How can rigorous archiving and preservation of social media help researchers and journalists in their work on social movements, citizen engagement, political events, and network formation? Context: The exponential growth of social media as a central communication practice, and its agility in announcing breaking news events more rapidly than traditional media, has changed the journalistic landscape: social media has been adopted as a significant source by professional journalists, and conversely, citizens are able to use social media as a form of direct reportage. Social media content now forms a significant part of the digital content generated every day, and provides a platform for voices that would not reach the broader public through traditional journalistic media alone. In this emerging environment, citizen microblogs and other user- generated content constitute an important part of history and popular memory, in particular when attempting to capture significant events and the varied perspectives that accompany these events. The flow of citizen generated reporting through social media is ephemeral and disordered; it quickly becomes inaccessible if not captured and stored in some way. This is in contrast to traditional journalism, which has well-developed archival practices, enabling the news production life cycle to reuse and rediscover content. This new landscape calls for technologies and methodologies to 1) rapidly and efficiently capture, filter and verify content in a way that generates immediate value for journalistic purposes; and 2) properly annotate and archive this information for longer-term preservation, access and reuse in the news life-cycle (e.g. for contextualization, investigative reporting or comprehensive storytelling). If not preserved, or if preserved without careful attention to subsequent access and discoverability, there is a risk of losing the diversity this rich social narrative contributes to traditional news media. Topics of Interest: Keeping the application domains of the minitrack in mind, topics of interest include, but are not limited to: • The role of user generated content in the news production life-cycle
 • Veracity, trust and provenance of social media sources and content • Approaches to archiving social media content • Event and topic detection and clustering
 • Information and entity extraction
 • Social network and community analysis • Semantic Web and Linked Data technologies for archival, discovery and enrichment of social media content • Opinion mining and sentiment analysis
 • Story curation, contextualisation and recommendation
 • Ethical challenges in archiving and broadcasting social media content For more information, please visit the minitrack web page at http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/HICSS_48/Tracks/DSM/DSMCitizen.pdf. Ambient/Ubiquitous Media & Open Source ?The medium is the message!? ? This conference track focuses on the definition of ambient and ubiquitous media with a cross-disciplinary viewpoint: ambient media between technology, art, and content. The focus of this track is on applications, location based services, ubiquitous computation, augmented reality, theory, art-works, mixed reality concepts, the Web 3.0, and user experiences that make ubiquitous and ambient media tick. Open source - The last decade has seen a significant increase in open source initiatives such as open source software, open standards, open content, open media, or even open source hardware. On the one hand, the open movement has created new kinds of opportunities such as new business models and development approaches. On the other hand, it has introduced new kinds of technical and non-technical challenges. Media Business, Media Production and Media Management Media business and media management face the challenges of the emergence of new forms of digital media and focuses on leadership practices, business models and value chains. It discusses competition, patterns of media usage, advertising models, and how traditional media can cope with the challenges coming from digital media focusing on media business and media management issues. Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) The wide field of HCI is to discuss issues around human computer interaction modalities, consumer experience, design of computer systems, human aspects, universal media access, ergonomics, communication, novel interaction modalities, privacy, trusted systems, interaction theories, and sociological and psychological factors. This theme of devotes to several of these aspects, and is targeted to the scientific community dealing with several applied and theoretical aspects of HCI and user experience. Digital Games The culture and business of digital games is becoming increasingly varied. The current trends range from novel interface innovations and digital distribution channels to social game dynamics and player-generated content. The games track is open for theoretical works, empirical case studies and constructive projects. ICT & E-Government In recent years, ICT has played a pivotal role in the development of digital economy. This technology facilitates the rapid accumulation and dissemination of information, group interaction, communication, and collaboration. ICT has become one of the core elements of managerial reform around the world. Since the launch of web 2.0 and emergence of ICT infrastructure, processes and policies many governments and public officials use new online tools to communicate among themselves, and with organizations and citizens. Information Systems & Management in Creativity Industry The media and entertainment industry is the third largest industry segment for investments in information systems. This particular industry segment is faced with tremendous challenges in terms of organizational, transformational, leadership, customer behaviour, and technological changes. One particular challenge is the transformation of the analogue media world into its digital counterpart. As of today, the successive research of business information management and systems focusing on media and entertainment industries is rather fragmented and stretches over a wide area of research islands such as social media, eCommerce, or eBusiness. To face this challenge, this theme focuses on information management and systems for media and entertainment industries and highlighting their particular needs in production, distribution, and consumption in the larger context of media and entertainment industries. Hybrid Media Already today, the wall between physical and digital is starting to be less noticeable. For example, digital devices are now combined with traditionally non digital things, some examples being paper, cardboard and clothing. Application-toy hybrids are also common, such as digital games which utilize physical toys in some form. The hybrid media track is for publications where traditional media meets new media and where physical meets digital. Demonstrations The aim is to gather demonstrations from researchers and professionals from the communities related to the topics of MindTrek. The objective for the demonstrations is to provide a forum for exchanging experiences, practical projects, or media demonstrators. The target audience includes members of the academic community, industry, or laboratories who can demonstrate the results of their research projects with a practical implementation. Special academic sessions (e.g. tutorials, demonstrations, workshops, and multidisciplinary sessions) will be held parallel to the MindTrek business conference. Academic speakers and authors are warmly welcome to register for the business conference tracks as part of the academic conference with our special registration rate. [Apologies for cross-posting] CFP HICSS minitrack Collective Intelligence and Crowds: Structure, Roles, and Identity Track: Digital and Social Media Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) 48, January 5-8, 2015, Kauai, Hawaii http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/ Papers Due: June 15, 2014 via the HICSS conference system http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_48/apahome48.htm We live surrounded by socially constructed identities. Some examples are organizations, nations, websites, companies, products and even persons. These identities are constituted through a complex interplay of interactions, a kind of distributed cognition. Communication requires not only a representation in an individual’s mind but also the knowledge that there is a similar representation in the minds of others. Platforms built on top of the Internet have changed the way we can create such shared representations. They allow people to aggregate knowledge from socially distant areas. They also allow diverse groups of people – and maybe machines in the form of artificial intelligences – to negotiate identities. We can build collective intelligences that themselves will steer the quest for knowledge. The collectives can be self-catalyzing, deciding individually or collaboratively what to do next, out of which novel and practical ideas emerge. While these open design collectives rely on organic growth and slow embedding of members in the network, alternative structures based on crowds can be assembled more rapidly. Between the two extremes are a host of different organizational structures, in which already committed members of a community are deployed to create or improve ideas. And the traces of these new organizations are also varied, ranging from ephemeral short messages to curated collaborative knowledge repositories. The output often takes the form of digital media. We are interested in papers that observe, analyze, or visualize these organization structures and the innovations they produce, papers that simulate this production through software, papers that analyze the phenomena of crowdsourcing, collective intelligence and collaborative mass knowledge production, and design research that creates and evaluates new tools and processes. We are particularly open to papers that explore unusual ways of modelling emergent organizations: models that demonstrate or reflect the influence of social systems on user behaviours, models that consider the multiple connections between people, technology, and institutions, models of technological and social affordances, models that break personal identity into sub-relations, and models that examine the emergence of roles, identity, and institutions. We are interested in applying the ideas of James March, Mark Granovetter, Harrison White, Charles Tilly and related scholars to information systems. We are looking for papers about the mechanisms (in the sense of Bhaskar) that explain the emergence of collective identity. In sum, the content of the track is open to analysis of collective intelligence, new knowledge creation, and crowdsourcing. Included also is the analysis of social interaction as a way of describing underlying social structure, and in particular the social construction of identity and roles.. Thus the track is open to a wide range of content areas that lend themselves to the analysis of relations between people, collectives, and machines, as well as the products produced as a result of these relations. In this minitrack, we are aiming to attract an audience from five groups: first, those interested in collective intelligence and crowdsourcing and who find a home in information systems departments; second, those in information schools who study these topics; third, computer scientists who are interested in the analysis of network and crowd processes, fourth, those who use social networks to describe social structure and fifth, industry practitioners. [Apologies for cross-posting] CFP HICSS minitrack Global, International, and Cross-Cultural Issues in IS Track: Internet and the Digital Economy Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) 48, January 5-8, 2015, Kauai, Hawaii http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/ Papers Due: June 15, 2014 via the HICSS conference system http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_48/apahome48.htm This minitrack focuses on the sociotechnical dynamics and the ways in which the Internet affects people, groups, organizations, and societies. We are in particular interested in the impact of global, international, and cross-cultural issues on ICT development, implementation and use across the globe. Globalization has historically been tied to technological innovation, and the present era of a networked information society is no different. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have provided the infrastructure for multinational businesses, created new cultural connections irrespective of geographic boundaries and distances, and allowed an increasingly mobile global population to be connected to their friends, families, and cultures no matter where they are. The issues surrounding global, international, and cross cultural issues in Information Systems (IS) attracted much scholarly attention and have been explored under myriad contexts. The minitrack welcomes submissions that relate to all aspects of global IS, or IS research situated in a global, international or cross-cultural context. The minitrack is open to all methodological approaches and perspectives. We are interested in empirical and theoretical work that addresses these and related socio-technical issues. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Research that considers the impacts of cultural values (e.g. on adaptive user interfaces) * Research on global Cloud sourcing strategies * Cross-national and cross-cultural comparisons of ICT adoption, use and development (e.g. Internet diffusion and impacts compared between different economies) * Effects of global social computing on organizational work organization and practices (e.g. pricing strategies) * Issues relating to globally distributed teams (e.g. the adoption and use of social media by cross-national virtual teams, worker motivation, and human error diversity) * Issues relating to Internet adoption and the digital society at the national level (e.g. digital infrastructure sophistication across countries) *Issues relating to global knowledge management (e.g. different knowledge-sharing cultures in multi-national corporations) *Issues relating to cross-national legislation and regulation (e.g. implications of different regulations governing Green IT in the EU vs. US or Asian countries) * Issues relating to global ICT governance (e.g. sustainable strategies for standardization and harmonization in evolving business networks) * Single country studies showing implications for other locations or results different from other contexts (e.g. impact of ICT policies on a transition economy) * Multi-country studies of ICT adoption, use, and development (e.g. e-commerce adoption involving multiple countries) * Global impacts of big data on governments, multinational companies, NGOs and other organizations Minitrack Organizers: Pnina Fichman, School of Informatics and Computing, Indiana University, Bloomington; fichman(a)indiana.edu<mailto:fichman@indiana.edu> Edward W.N. solicit input on a course about social media and public policy
by Christina Wu 06 Jun '14

06 Jun '14

Dear colleagues, I am slated to teach the course for the second time about new media technology and public policy, this time with a heavier emphasis on policy areas related to the social media. As I am revamping the course to reflect recent policy developments, as well as to make it more hands-on (I am being reminded time and time again that students would like to "do" things that are challenging but also fun), I would love to seek your expert opinions about this topic, along with ideas about class activities. No suggestions will be redundant. Please feel free to share sub-topics, assignments, and if it is not too much to ask, even syllabuses. I intend to have a built-in online element to this course, given that it is about the digital media. Students will create and share things here during the semester, some of which could culminate into a final product (textual as well as audio-video). My hope is to use some more popular platforms such as Wordpress and Youtube, so that students can carry their work from this class forward into the "real world". If you have experiences to share in this department, I will be grateful. Thank you all in advance! I would be happy to compile a list of things from the on-list and off-list responses and share with everyone if there is such a demand. Best, JCW -- Jingsi Christina Wu, PhD Assistant Professor Department of Journalism, Media Studies, and Public Relations Hofstra University, Hempstead, New York
