Digital Crossings in Europe, special issue on digital media and migration out now
by Leurs, K.H.A. (Koen) 06 Jun '14

06 Jun '14

Dear list-members, [Apologies for x-posting] With this note I would like to kindly inform you all of the publication of a special issue on digital media and migration I guest-edited with Sandra Ponzanesi called “Digital Crossings in Europe” in the Intellect journal Crossings. Journal of Migration and Culture. Access the special issue via this link: http://www.intellectbooks.co.uk/journals/view-Article,id=17785/ ‘On digital crossings in Europe’ explores the entanglements of digital media and migration beyond the national and mono-ethnic focus. We argue how borders, iden¬tity and affectivity have been destabilized and reconfigured through medium-specific technological affordances, opting for a comparative and postcolonial framework that focuses on diversity in conjunction with cosmopolitan aspirations. Internet applica¬tions make it possible to sustain new forms of diaspora and networks, which operate within and beyond Europe, making issues of ethnicity, nationality, race and class not obsolete but transformed. It is therefore important and timely to analyse how these reconfigurations take place and affect everyday life. Using a critical approach to digital tools that avoids utopian notions of connectivity and borderlessness, this article highlights the dyssymmetries and tensions produced by the ubiquitousness of digital connectivity. – Blurb from our introductory essay. Hello Roya For collecting (and analysing) tweets, you could try the free Chorus software: http://www.chorusanalytics.co.uk/ It runs as standalone software in a Windows-based environment - no server required. And it can collect tweets from individual users (as well as search terms including hashtags etc). For an example of how Chorus has been applied to a project exploring racialized hashtags, see: http://www.darkmatter101.org/wiki/notracist_twitter best regards Sanjay Sharma Brunel University, UK http://www.brunel.ac.uk/sss/sociology/staff-profiles/sanjay-sharma twitter: @sanjay_digital ------------------------------------------------------------- > From: Air-L [mailto:air-l-bounces@listserv.aoir.org] On Behalf Of Roya M. ScraperWiki makes it very easy to gather tweets from all users on Twitter, but I'm looking to limit the data set to specific users. Is there a simple way to do this? If not - is there another program that will collect the data in a more streamlined way? > > Thanks, > > Roya Moussapour > _______________________________________________

Deadline extension for Workshops co-located with Hypertext 2014
by Denis Parra 05 Jun '14

05 Jun '14

Apologies for cross posting New deadline: Jun 27th 2014 (23:59 Chile Time) ============================================================ New dates for paper submission to workshops co-located at Hypertext 2014: - DataWiz: Workshop on Data Visualization. - LinkQS: Workshop on Linking The Quantified Self. - SP 2014: Workshop on Social Personalization. - WLT 2014: Workshop on Hyperlinking in the Web of Linked Things. -------------------------------------------------------------- Important Dates: ** Submission Deadline: Jun 27th 2014 (23:59 Chile Time) ** Notification of Acceptance: Jul 11, 2014 ** Final Papers Due: Jul 23, 2014 ** Workshop date: September 1, 2014 ============================================================ DataWiz: Workshop on Data Visualization. Martina Deplano, University of Turin, Italy. Andrè Panisson, ISI Foundation, Italy. Giancarlo Ruffo, University of Turin, Italy. Web page: http://datawiz2014.di.unito.it/ Abstract: DataWiz aims at bringing together an interdisciplinary audience (e.g. computer and cognitive scientists, designers, data journalists), in order to discuss tools, models and metaphors useful to understand and explain input or output data through advanced graphical user interfaces. In fact, interacting with data by means of intriguing visual representations, that can eventually be accessed from the Web, is a fundamental approach to accurately present scientific findings in an appealing way. The aim is to leave to the observer (likely an expert of the domain) the task of exploring complex phenomena, without the pain of dealing with issues such as data complexity and overload of information. This workshop focuses on both scientific and information visualization, and discussions of best practices and innovative approaches are welcome. ============================================================ LinkQS: Workshop on Linking The Quantified Self. Amon Rapp, Università di Torino, Italy. Frank Hopfgartner, Technische Universität Berlin, Germany. Till Plumbaum, Technische Universität Berlin, Germany. Bob Kummerfeld, University of Sydney, Australia. Judy Kay, University of Sydney, Australia. Eelco Herder, L3S Research Center Hannover, Germany. Web page: http://linkqsws.wordpress.com/ Abstract: Quantified Self tools help users to collect their data, aggregate them through some forms of reasoning, and feed them back through data visualizations. Although the current spread on the market of these kinds of tools, many issues arise in their usage. Looking at diverse fields of research, such as User Modeling, Web of Things and semantic web it is now possible to imagine to overcome some of these issues. This workshop aims to discuss the new opportunities that arise from these research fields. ============================================================ SP 2014: Workshop on Social Personalization. Peter Brusilovsky, University of Pittsburgh, USA. Leandro Balby Marinho, Federal University of Campina Grande, Brasil. Denis Parra, Pontificia Universidad Católica, Chile. Eliana Scheihing, Universidad Austral, Chile. Christoph Trattner, Know-Center, Austria. Web page: http://columbus.exp.sis.pitt.edu/sp2014/ Abstract: For the Social Personalization workshop, we aim to attract researchers from all over the world working in the fields of User Modeling, Personalization and Recommendations where the social context plays a fundamental role. This topic is important because it involves leveraging new sources of information that are specific for social systems such as shared items and tags, user public profiles, social connections, and logs of user social activities in order to improve people's information access in a wide variety of tasks and across different devices. The goal of this workshop is to share and discuss research that goes hopefully beyond classic personalization techniques, trying to capitalise potentially useful information available in social data for paving the way to more efficient personalized information access technologies. ============================================================ WLT 2014: Workshop on Hyperlinking in the Web of Linked Things. Carlos Buil-Aranda, Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, Chile. Federica Cena, University of Torino, Italy. Ilaria Torre, University of Genoa, Italy. Web page: http://wlt.dibris.unige.it Abstract: The Web is now evolving from a mere network of connections among virtual content and data to a network of connections among real things and objects. In such new emerging Web, hyperlinks are consequently changing their nature. They can now connect very different kinds of resources that are real world things, data and documents; moreover they can be typed, i.e. they can describe the kind of relationship between the resources they connect, following the Linked Data principles. This workshop aims to discuss the new issues that arise from the rapid changes in this research field. ============================================================ Denis Parra Assistant Professor, CS Department School of Engineering, PUC CHile http://denisparra.github.io

ECCS'14: Computational Social Science Workshop, Lucca, Italy, 09/2014
by Giovanni Luca Ciampaglia 05 Jun '14

05 Jun '14

Apologies for cross-posting. ============= CALL FOR ABSTRACTS Computational Social Science: Social Contagion, Collective Behaviour, and Networks to be held in Lucca, Italy, 24-25 September 2014 Website: http://cssworkshop.oii.ox.ac.uk/ Important Dates: Abstract submission deadline 22 June 2014 Conference date 24-25 September 2013 Event Overview Technology-mediated social collectives are taking an important role in the design of social structures. Yet our understanding of the complex mechanisms governing networks and collective behaviour is still deplorably shallow. Fundamental concepts of on- and off-line networks such as power, authority, leader-follower dynamics, consensus emergence, information sharing, conflict, and collaboration are still not well defined and investigated. These are all crucial to illuminate the advantages and pitfalls of collective decision-making, which can cancel out individual mistakes, but also spiral out of control. In recent endeavours, data from Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Wikipedia, and weblogs have been shown to strongly correlate to, and even predict, elections, opinions, attitudes, movie revenues, and oscillations in the stock market, to cite few examples. Similar data provided insights into the mechanisms driving the formation of groups of interests, topical communities, and the evolution of social networks. They also have been used to study polarization phenomena in politics, diffusion of information, and the dynamics of collective attention. However, a deeper understanding of these phenomena is still very much on demand. In parallel, and even preceding the surge in interest towards social media, the area of agent-based modeling (ABM) has grown in scope, focus and capability to produce testable hypotheses, going beyond the original goal of explaining macroscopic behaviors from simple interaction rules among stylized agents. The aim of this satellite is to address the question of ICT-mediated social phenomena emerging over multiple scales, ranging from the interactions of individuals to the emergence of self-organized global movements. We would like to gather researchers from different disciplines and methodological backgrounds to form a forum to discuss ideas, research questions, recent results, and future challenges in this emerging area of research and public interest. TOPICS OF INTEREST - Interdependent social contagion process - Peer production and mass collaboration - Temporally evolving networks and dynamics of social contagion - Cognitive aspects of belief formation and revision - Online communication and information diffusion - Viral propagation in online social network - Crowd-sourcing; herding behaviour vs. wisdom of crowds - E-democracy and online government-citizen interaction - Online socio-political mobilizations - Public attention and popularity - Temporal and geographical patterns of information diffusion - User-information interplay - Group formation, evolution and group behavior analysis. - Modeling, tracking and forecasting dynamic groups in social media. - Community detection and dynamic community structure analysis. - Social simulation, cultural, opinion, and normative dynamics. - Empirical calibration and validation of agent-based social models. - Models of social capital, collective action, social movements. - Coevolution of network and behavior. Questions about the conference scope should be directed to the program co-chairs at css2014(a)indiana.edu Submission Instructions Submissions will be made by sending one A4 page abstract in pdf via Easychair <https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=css14>. The deadline for abstract submission is 22 June 2014. The contributions to the event will be evaluated by the programme committee through a peer review process that will account for the scientific quality as well as for the relevance of the contribution to the aims of the satellite. The authors of accepted abstracts will be notified via e-mail by end of July 2014. Invited Speakers (to be completed) János Kertész (Central European University, Budapest, Hungary) Esteban Moro (Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Spain) Alain Barrat (Centre de Physique Théorique, Marseille, France) Organising Committee - Javier Borge-Holthoefer (Qatar Computing Research Institute, Doha, Qatar) - Jonathan Bright (OII, University of Oxford, UK) - Giovanni Luca Ciampaglia (CnetS, Indiana University at Bloomington, USA) - Sandra Gonzalez-Bailon (Annenberg, University of Pennsylvania, USA) - Emilio Ferrara (CnetS, Indiana University at Bloomington, USA) - Alessandro Flammini (CnetS, Indiana University at Bloomington, USA) - Márton Karsai (ENS de Lyon, INRIA, France) - Alessandro Vespignani (Northeastern University – USA, ISI Foundation, Italy) - Taha Yasseri (OII, University of Oxford, UK) - -- Giovanni Luca Ciampaglia ✎ 919 E 10th ∙ Bloomington 47408 IN ∙ USA ☞ http://www.inf.usi.ch/phd/ciampaglia/ ✆ +1 812 287-3471 ✉ gciampag(a)indiana.edu

Hi all - I'm doing a research project at Bowdoin College and trying to use ScraperWiki to gather tweets. ScraperWiki makes it very easy to gather tweets from all users on Twitter, but I'm looking to limit the data set to specific users. Is there a simple way to do this? If not - is there another program that will collect the data in a more streamlined way? Thanks, Roya Moussapour
