Fwd: Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships (all welcome-jh)
by Jeremy hunsinger 03 Jun '14

03 Jun '14

If you are interested in doing something with us at laurier in communication studies/internet studies/cultural studies/etc/, and we have some cool things going on, drop me or my colleagues a note. ---- Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships – Call for applications Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships are the most prestigious postdoc fellowships in Canada, and are available to postdoctoral fellows working in all fields that fall under any of the three tri-council funding agencies: NSERC, SSHRC & CIHR. The aim of the program is to attract and retain top-tier national and international postdocs and to position these postdoctoral fellows for success as research leaders of tomorrow. The application requirements for these prestigious awards (valued at $70,000/year for 2 years, beginning between April and October of 2015) are unique, in that they are not only based on the merit of the applicant and their potential to launch a successful research-intensive career, but also focus on the synergy between the applicant, the proposed supervisor, and the host institution (and its commitment to the research program and environment with which the applicant is to be affiliated). Applicants must therefore complete their application in full collaboration with the proposed host institution. This year’s national application deadline is September 24, 2014. But because of the extensive nature of the applications, and the required institutional elements, the internal deadline for pre-applications (notices of intent) to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies is August 22, 2014. Applicants who will be supported by the university for the national competition will be notified by September 3, 2014. We encourage faculty to recruit exceptional postdoctoral researchers whose research aligns well with one of the research strengths of the university to submit an application to FGPS by the August internal deadline. For more information about the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship program, and the institution’s internal process and application requirements, please follow these links: http://banting.fellowships-bourses.gc.ca/home-accueil-eng.html http://www.wlu.ca/page.php?grp_id=36&p=24457 Questions can be directed to Matt Smith, Associate Dean, Postdoctoral Affairs (msmith(a)wlu.ca) -- jeremy hunsinger Center for Digital Discourse and Culture Virginia Tech www.tmttlt.com () ascii ribbon campaign - against html mail /\ - against microsoft attachments http://www.stswiki.org/ sts wiki http://transdisciplinarystudies.tmttlt.com/ Transdisciplinary Studies:the book series I am always doing that which I can not do, in order that I may learn how to do it. -Pablo Picasso

Call: RESPECT 2nd Policy Workshop Barcelona 17-18, 2014
by Christian Fuchs 03 Jun '14

03 Jun '14

Call for Abstracts Technology and Crime: Law, Privacy and Policy in the Era of Big Data RESPECT 2nd Policy Workshop Barcelona September 17-18, 2014 http://respectbarcelona.eu/ For years, information about crimes has been collected. However, the use of data to contribute to public safety as well as to prevent and solve crimes has changed significantly with the proliferation of data-mining devices and processes. In the era of big data, analysing and understanding is more of a challenge than simply gathering data. At the same time, the existence of large-scale surveillance programmes and the routine collaboration between the public and private sector raise concerns about the space for law and privacy in these new practices. This all poses a challenge to policymaking, where the demands for increased security, privacy, transparency and accountability need to be negotiated and acted upon. At this crucial moment for the intersection between security, law and technology, we are seeking papers that address any of the topics mentioned above, as well as contributions presenting new approaches to the issues at stake. Abstracts of no more than 300 words (including authors, affiliation, contact details and at least 3 keywords should be sent before June 30th via https://www.easychair.org.

CfP Middle East Journal of Culture and Communication. Digital Intimacies: Exploring digital media and intimate lives in the Middle East
by Elisabetta Costa 03 Jun '14

03 Jun '14

*Middle East** Journal of Culture and Communication * *Special Issue Call for Papers * *Digital Intimacies: * *Exploring digital media and intimate lives in the Middle East* Over the last decade, the spread of digital technologies has profoundly reshaped intimate lives worldwide, transforming the ways in which people are involved in intimate relationships and experience love, sexuality and emotions in everyday lives. Like other places, in the Middle East, millions use the internet on a daily basis to access a variety of music and cultural products, and to communicate, create and maintain relationships with partners, family members, friends and lovers, as well as for activism. Indeed, along with providing spaces for different modes of activism and resistance, digital platforms have become critical arenas in which young people negotiate ideas and practices of love, dominant gender roles and religious and societal values. While some work has begun to critically engage with the use of the Internet for activism, very little is known of the ways in which digital platforms and different technologies (including mobile phones) can remold imaginaries and practices of love and friendship and mediate the ways in which "intimacy" is experienced and lived in the Middle East. This special issue aims to fill the gap in the scholarship on intimate lives and digital media in Middle East by focusing on the everyday uses of digital platforms and addressing their material, gendered and imaginative implications for practices. We welcome articles from a wide range of disciplines (including and not restricted to anthropology, sociology, internet, cultural and media studies) that draw on empirically-grounded studies and that raise broader methodological and theoretical reflections. Some of the questions we hope to address are: 1. New imaginaries of love and marriage: how does people's access to online cultural products (within Islamic and non-Islamic contexts) contribute to remoulding their romantic imaginations, conventional courtship practices and intimate desires? 2. Digital media practices: which are the actual media practices whereby young people create, maintain, and end intimate relationships through digital media? How do social media expand inter-personal communicative possibilities and wide people's social networks beyond immediate family and community based networks? 3. Digital media in long distance relationships: how are digital media used in long-distances relationships between family members and lovers, in national and transnational contexts? 4. Digital media and social change: how do media practice challenge, reproduce and reinforce dominant social practices and gendered imaginaries? What is the impact of online practices on the way people experience intimacy in the every-day life? 5. Digital technologies, sex and sexuality: how do people have sex online? How do they produce and consume pornography? 6. The use of the internet by LGBTQ people: how do they create network, form communities and communicate online? Deadline for submission of abstracts is 30 September 2014. Abstracts should not exceed 500 words and should provide a short explanation of your contribution to this special issue, provide a clear description of the proposed approach, the theoretical framework and empirical data. Notification of acceptance of abstracts: 15 November 2014 Deadline for submission of complete manuscripts: 30 March 2015 Articles should be between 6000- 7000 words long and include an abstract of 150 words, the author's affiliation and email address and at least five keywords Please send a paper proposal along with a short bio by 30 September 2014 to Elisabetta Costa (University College London) at e.costa(a)ucl.ac.uk; and to Laura Menin (University of Milano Bicocca) at l.menin(a)campus.unimib.it. CFP: MOBILE TRASH Edited by Mél Hogan & Andrea Zeffiro (January 2016) For this special issue of Wi: Journal of Mobile Media [wi.mobilities.ca], we are gathering contributions that address the idea of ‘mobile trash.’ The intention of this issue is to reconfigure the concepts of ‘mobile’ and ‘mobilities’ in relation to trash, by its various definitions and formations, from new materialism, feminism, media ecology, media archaeology, and queer frameworks. We’re especially interested in short pieces (2500 words) and creative interventions that explore mobile trash as pollution, fumes, compost, satellites, e-waste, toxins, bodies, drones, viruses, hacks, landfill, etc. We welcome pieces that poetically engage the politics of trash and speak to its borders, transitions, movements, materialities, shifts, contagions, ecologies, permutations, mutations, and invisible transferences. The online issue goes live January 2016 and will be accompanied by a print-on-demand issue. If interested, please send us a 300 word abstract to info(a)technotrash.org Include your name, personal URL, and title of submission. Timeline / Deadline for abstracts: Nov 1, 2014. / We will let you know if your project is selected by Feb 1, 2015. / Final submissions due: Sept 1, 2015. / Issue goes live: January 1, 2016. http://technotrash.org/cfp-mobile-trash-2016/

Sociomateriality and previous empirical research
by Karin Bolldén 03 Jun '14

03 Jun '14

Dear Colleagues I am a PhD Candidate writing a thesis on online teaching practices in a higher education context and have difficulties navigating through all the previous empirical studies published. Is there anyone on this list who has knowledge of: 1. published empirical studies in a higher education context, using sociomaterial perspectives/practice theory as a theoretical perspective (in particular Schatzki) when analysing online teaching? 2. a recent handbook or research overview on online teaching and learning in higher education or a recent handbook in distance education/e-learning in general that could serve as a starting point for getting an overview of the current research situation in the field? 3. a text that deals with the different concepts that are used to denominate the field (such as distance education and e-learning) and also gives some clarity on which concepts that are mostly used at the moment? I am sincerely grateful for anything you would like to share with me. Best regards Karin Bolldén PhD Student in Adult Learning Department of Behavioural Sciences and Learning Linköping University, Sweden
