digitalSTS proposal submission site open (May 1st-June 1st 2014)
by Laura Forlano 03 Jun '14

03 Jun '14

FYI - Deadline extended to June 7th. The digitalSTS submission system is now accepting proposals for the edited volume, from May 1st to June 1st 2014. During June the site will be open for the digitalSTS community to collaboratively review the submissions. Please see digitalsts.net for more information and the full call for proposals. - We invite one-page proposals for an edited volume on “digitalSTS” that advance our understanding of digital objects, phenomena, processes, and methods in Science and Technology Studies. Please submit proposals at submit.digitalsts.net SUBMISSION PERIOD May 1 2014 to June 1st 2014 Proposals will be solicited and adjudicated in one of three categories: (1) Theory and Cases, (2) Methods, and (3) Making. To best tailor your proposed submission, we outline the three categories and their expectations below. Please see digitalsts.net for more information. Strong contributions will draw direct connections to topics, literatures, and inquiries of central importance to STS. They may also engage contributions from intersecting fields such as anthropology, communications, media studies, computer-supported cooperative work, and human-computer interaction. We encourage the broadest possible participation from individuals and groups working across Science and Technology Studies and its constitutive or intersecting domains. In line with the principles and practices of the growing digitalSTS community, this Call for Proposals (and Things!) was generated by community members at the digitalSTS Workshop at 4S in October 2013. Submissions will be discussed and adjudicated in an open, online peer review format before the Editorial Team will select and solicit papers. We welcome all members of the STS community to participate in the process of reviewing proposals. 1. Theory and Cases (a.k.a. “The Handbook”): Submissions to the “Theory and Cases” section should explore or propose a significant or novel contribution to STS theory through an empirical case study focused on digital environments, objects, or practices. Through such studies, we aim tobuild a corpus of theory around the digital within STS, and also contribute to larger debates and established topics within the field (for example: social shaping, actor-networks, ontologies, expertise, feminist STS, science and technology policy, etc.). 2. Methods (a.k.a. “The Field-guide”): We seek submissions that address methods and methodologies for studies of the digital, broadly construed, as well as novel approaches that draw on the enabling capacities of digital approaches for investigations of STS topics. The digital presents many novel phenomena and also provokes a reexamination of existing objects of analysis for STS. The styles for submission are broad: we seek exemplary studies that demonstrate methods, or reflexive papers that explore high level methodologies and hands-on approaches. 3. Making (a.k.a. “The Scrapbook”): This section of the Handbook issues a “Call for Things” targeted at an audience of scholars, designers and makers as well as hybrid identities such as scholar/makers. The call is intended to bring together texts as well as visual materials (such as diagrams, images, prototypes, videos) that use design/making to engage with themes and theories about STS (such as power, materiality), design/making for STS (such as how visual materials and hands-on methods can be incorporated into STS) and design with STS (such as collaborations between scholars and makers). * Note: We recognize that submissions may cross categories; these are provisional and it may be the case that the final handbook is organized otherwise. Deadlines: Online Submission System Open May 1st 2014 Submissions Deadline (One Page Proposal) June 1st 2014 Community Review period: June 1st – July 1st 2014 Submission and Review system at submit.digitalsts.net Editors David Ribes, Georgetown University Janet Vertesi, Princeton University Editorial Team Carl DiSalvo, Georgia Institute of Technology Laura Forlano, Illinois Institute of Technology Steve Jackson, Cornell University Yanni Loukissas, Harvard metaLAB Daniela Rosner, University of Washington Stephanie Steinhardt, Cornell University Matt Burton, University of Michigan Stuart Geiger, University of California Berkeley

call for chapter: Closed Systems / Open Worlds
by Jeremy hunsinger 03 Jun '14

03 Jun '14

Closed Systems / Open Worlds Edited by: Jeremy Hunsinger (Wilfrid Laurier University), Jason Nolan (Ryerson University) & Melanie McBride (York University) This book will consist of explorations at the boundaries of virtual worlds as enclosed but encouraging spaces for exploration, learning, and enculturation. Game/worlds like Second Life, OpenSim, Minecraft, and Cloud Party are providing spaces for the construction of alternatives and reimaginings, though frequently they end up more as reproductions. We seek to challenge those spaces and their creativities and imaginings. These worlds exist as both code and conduct. Code is a modulating multiple signifier, in that the interpreters of the code vary from human to machine and that our understanding of the signifier changes the worldliness in itself. The conduct of both participants and administrators of these spaces influences how they flourish and then fade. As such the worlds and their anima/animus are socially constructed fictions where authors/creators/users, both above and below the actions are sometimes in concert, yet often in conflict with the space and intentions of the originators. This book seeks critically engaged scholars who want to risk the possibility of change in the face of closed systems. We are looking for critical or speculative essays that must be theoretically, empirically and/or contextually grounded chapters of 5000-6500 words plus apparatus. Doctoral students and non-tenure faculty members will be afforded blind peer review upon request. We are aiming for 12 -14 chapters that define the boundaries and thus likely futures of research on virtual worlds. Dates Aug 1, 2014 – 250 word précis with 5-10 key references Aug. 30, 2014 – accept/reject proposals Feb 1, 2015 – final draft due July 1, 2015 – feedback from reviewers September 1, 2015 – final version December 1, 2015 – in press Queries and submissions: ClosedandOpenBook(a)gmail.com Topics may include: alternative and minor game/virtual/etc. worlds archeologies/genealogies of virtuality augmented and mixed-reality worlds distributed cognitions early explorations in virtual learning environments the freedom of limitations identity construction and/or identity tourism the limits of simulation and emulation memories and forgetting in virtual worlds multisensory virtual environments multisensory exclusions in virtual worlds narratival and post-narratival andragogies, ‘learning worlds’ negative spaces as learning spaces (bullying, trolling, flaming, etc.) in virtual worlds non-social virtual worlds (dwarf fortress, some forms of minecraft, etc.) real world virtual worlds and boundaries (Lego, Hello Kitty, WebKinz, etc.) replication of real world environments/problems surrealism, unrealism and constructable alterities of/within virtual worlds transformative virtual classroom vapourware and virtuality the virtuality of learning -- jeremy hunsinger Center for Digital Discourse and Culture Virginia Tech www.tmttlt.com () ascii ribbon campaign - against html mail /\ - against microsoft attachments http://www.stswiki.org/ sts wiki http://transdisciplinarystudies.tmttlt.com/ Transdisciplinary Studies:the book series I am always doing that which I can not do, in order that I may learn how to do it. -Pablo Picasso

Second Call for Papers: HICSS 48 minitrack – Social Media and Location Information
by Jim T 03 Jun '14

03 Jun '14

Hi everyone, Britta and I wanted to remind folks that the deadline for paper submission is *June 15th *which is rapidly approaching. *Obligatory apologies for cross-posting.* *HICSS 48 minitrack – Social Media and Location Information* Jim Thatcher and Britta Ricker would like to announce and invite submission to a new minitrack at the HICSS 48 <http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_48/apahome48.htm> conference to be held this January 5-8, 2015 in Hawaii. The minitrack, *Social Media and Location Information <http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/HICSS_48/Tracks/DSM/DSMLocation.pdf>, *is a sub-track of the *Digital and Social Media <http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/HICSS_48/Tracks/DigitalandSocialMedia.htm>* track. The Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) will be held at the Grand Hyatt Kauai <http://kauai.hyatt.com/en/hotel/home.html> (more information on the venue is here <http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_48/accommodation48.htm>). The conference CFP is found here <http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_48/48CFP-final.pdf>. In addition to the amazing venue, HICSS is one of the top conferences in paper citation index rating. Papers are peer-reviewed and all accepted papers are published in the IEEE Digital Library and made available for free to all parties. The conference attracts a diverse, transdisciplinary set of researchers and promotes lively, interactive sessions and the cross-pollination of ideas. *Our Call for Papers follows:* This minitrack focuses broadly on the location information generated through the use of digital and social media with a particular emphasis on how that information may be collected and interpreted to better understand how location and environment intersect with social, political, and economic forces. We would like to attract papers that examine social media through an explicitly spatial lens. These would include papers interested in the technical praxis of gathering and visualizing spatial information as well as theoretical papers exploring the generation, capture, use, and exchange of spatial information with respect to social science theory. We call for papers that address the production, capture, and study of location information in social media through both technical and theoretical perspectives. Papers are encouraged to address “location information” in a broad sense that includes both precise geolocated coordinates and more general expressions of space and place. This includes, *but is not limited to*, papers that: - Offer new technical solutions to the capture, interpretation, or visualization of spatial media; - Examine the epistemological and ontological effects of spatial social media upon users; - Present empirical work on the creation or consumption of spatial social media; - Advance our understanding of how spatial social media relate to social and political processes; - Present new work on the role of economic forces in the creation and use of spatial social media, for example, location-specific advertising; or - Explore spatial social media as a means of better understanding urban and non-urban environments. The deadline for submission is *June 15th. *Please take a look at the *author instructions.* <http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_48/authorinstructions.htm> If you have any additional questions, don’t hesitate to contact Jim or Britta. http://jimthatcher.net/?p=104

inquiry on appendices from international handbook of internet research
by Jeremy hunsinger 02 Jun '14

02 Jun '14

As many of you know, Matt, Lisbeth and I are working on a second volume of the international handbook of internet research. In volume 1, we included 2 appendices that I thought might be of interest to the community. One was a self-reported standardized listing of degree programs that teach internet research/internet studies and the other was a self-reported standardized list of research centers, significant figures at the centers, and major research projects/trajectories of the centers. The thought when we created these appendices helped define the field of internet research and documented, in part, the field at the time. What i don't know is that anyone found those appendices useful and to what end people may have used them? I bring this up because it is possible to update and extend those listings, or even create new appendices with new information. So if you found them useful in some manner, please drop me a note letting me know your thoughts. thanks! -j -- jeremy hunsinger Center for Digital Discourse and Culture Virginia Tech www.tmttlt.com () ascii ribbon campaign - against html mail /\ - against microsoft attachments http://www.stswiki.org/ sts wiki http://transdisciplinarystudies.tmttlt.com/ Transdisciplinary Studies:the book series I am always doing that which I can not do, in order that I may learn how to do it. -Pablo Picasso

Social Data & Tools: Prizes for Academics
by Shulman, Stu 31 May '14

31 May '14

Social Data & Tools: Prizes for Academics (http://bit.ly/1pGuUJo) We felt inspired by the recent #DataGrants experiment sponsored by Twitter that generated more than 1,300 proposals from 60 countries and resulted in six extremely interesting awards. One thing is clear: many more grants of social data licenses are needed to fuel academic research. Texifter is sponsoring social data and tools prizes for academics as a simple contest with 12 winners a month this summer. In addition to social data access, we understand that many academic researchers also need "point & click" web-based tools to simplify the data access and management tasks involving social media APIs and jSON. The Prizes We will award twelve social data prizes with text analytics software licenses every month this summer. These premium social data prizes include access to our powerful online DiscoverText tools to search, filter, cluster, code, and machine classify the data, as well as interactive visual reporting tools include several specialized views for metadata eDiscovery, time series, deduplication, near-duplicate clustering, and other project attributes. No software programming skills required. The twelve monthly prizes are: + One grand prize per month of 10 Historical Twitter Days and credit for 1,000,000 Tweets plus one year of Enterprise access to DiscoverText. Up to one hour of free consulting on research design and social data cleaning. + Two nearly grand prizes per month of 5 Historical Twitter Days and credit for 500,000 Tweets plus six months of Enterprise access to DiscoverText. Up to one hour of free consulting on research design and social data cleaning. + Three prizes of six months of Enterprise access to DiscoverText plus 100,000 credits to capture day-forward Twitter data via the Gnip PowerTrack. + Three prizes of six months of Enterprise access to DiscoverText plus 50,000 credits to capture day-forward Tumblr data via the Gnip PowerTrack. + Three prizes of six months of Enterprise access to DiscoverText plus 25,000 credits to capture day-forward Disqus or WordPress data via the Gnip PowerTrack. Rules to Enter This prize drawing is designed to promote experimentation with the free historical Twitter estimation tool we have in beta known as Sifter. The application provides search and retrieve access to every undeleted Tweet in the history of Twitter. 1. Create a free account on Sifter: http://sifter.texifter.com/Home/Registration. 2. Indicate you are an academic and show your affiliation using a URL during or after the registration process. 3.Send us a copy of your CV via email (info(a)texifter.com) You only need to do this once even if you enter every month. 4. Use Sifter to generate at least one Gnip historical PowerTrack for Twitter estimate spanning no more than 10 historical Twitter days and returning no more than 1,000,000 tweets. Estimates are free and we encourage experimentation with sampling and PowerTrack operators. Create as many estimates as you like. 5. Every user with a valid estimate =<10 Twitter days and =<1,000,000 tweets during a calendar month this summer will be entered into the drawing for a social data research grant prize. 6. Every month, for at least the next three starting with June 2014, we will hold a new drawing. 7. A single user can only win one prize per month, but can enter the drawing every month. We will do a drawing at the end of each month limited to just the first 100 eligible entries to increase the chances of winning a prize to better than 1 in 10. Remember to visit Sifter early in the month before all 100 entries are taken. 8. After the drawing each month we will publish a list of the 12 winners and their academic affiliations on the Texifter blog. 9. Social Data and Software Terms of Service All contest-related social data will be stored in DiscoverText. Use of the data is governed both by the publisher and Texifter Terms of Service. "The Future Need for Tools and Data is Great" This small contest cannot satisfy the pent up demand students and faculty have for tools and data. We do think that these prizes can equip a researcher with sufficient data and advanced analytic tools to run a successful pilot study, or to complete a graduate thesis proposal. It is our hope to grow the social data research grant program over time. If it helps to drives new awareness of the research ecosystem, Texifter would be happy to be a part of the innovative energy pouring into academic research studies of the impact and uses of social data. http://www.discovertext.com/Home/Publications Project Outputs We will invite all of the contest winners to write about their project on the Texifter blog. This is optional, but we have had some great guest research posts lately about school bullying, elections, and reusable learning objects. We hope these software and social data research grants will lead to more reports of innovative teaching and research efforts.

Urgent Announcement Re: IR15 Conference
by Kendall, Lori 30 May '14

30 May '14

Given the extraordinarily difficult and uncertain situation in Thailand, especially in Bangkok, the Executive Committee of AoIR has decided to move the Internet Research 15 conference out of Bangkok. The conference will still take place in October of this year. We are in the process of negotiating a new location, and expect to be able to announce that soon. We are disappointed to have to take this step, and deeply regret the disruption and the inconvenience this change of plans might cause. It was an extremely difficult decision to make. Our Local Host, Soraj Hongladoram, has done a fantastic job of making local arrangements and raising sponsorship for the conference. On account of the change of venue, we will refund all current registration fees paid. We have currently closed registration and will reopen it once we have confirmed the new plans for the conference. If you have already registered for the conference, we will ask you to reregister at that time. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this transition, and will keep you informed as we know more. Lori Kendall President, Association of Internet Researchers prez(a)aoir.org
