2014 Steve Jones Internet Lecture: Ian Bogost
by Sarina Chen 22 May '14

22 May '14

The 2014 Steve Jones Internet Research Lecture features Ian Bogost, at 1:30 pm on Sunday, May 25 in Seattle Sheraton, Redwood A, during the International Communication Association’s 64th Annual Conference, Seattle, May 22 - 26. Ian Bogost is a video game designer, critic and researcher. He holds a joint professorship in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication and in Interactive Computing in the College of Computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he is the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts Distinguished Chair in Media Studies. He is a founding partner at Persuasive Games. His research and writing consider video games as an expressive medium, and his creative practice focuses on games about social and political issues, including airport security, consumer debt, disaffected workers, the petroleum industry, suburban errands, pandemic flu and tort reform. In his lecture, Bogost states that thoughts are things. A word that we'd first associate with matter so quickly becomes one of matters, of affairs, incidents, penchants, circumstances, activities, notions. Bogost discusses, how we can learn to live with things, where things mean stuff rather than ideas and events? How do we approach a world so replete, so overburdened with stuff that it's literally falling apart from the wear? How do we think of ourselves as really just another thing among others, rather than their masters and mistresses? How can we respect things for what they are, irrespective of our contact or concern, and how do we really do so, not just late one weird night, but every day, habitually, for real? And how do we do so without descending into the anguish of nihilism, without simply concluding that the universe is fundamentally indifferent? This event is co-sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research (www.cccsir.com) University of Illinois, Chicago, and the International Communication Association. For more information about this event, please contact Shing-Ling Sarina Chen, sarina.chen(a)uni.edu.

A Manifesto for Music Technologists
by Jonathan Sterne, Dr. 21 May '14

21 May '14

Dear Colleagues, I am writing to call your attention to a manifesto on music, technology and culture at http://www.musictechifesto.org We are hoping it will spur lots of critical discussion, as well as new kinds of collaborations, both across academic disciplines that don't normally talk with one another, and across institutions that don't normally work together. More details are below my signature, but if you support the project, please consider signing on. Thanks for reading. Sincerely, --Jonathan -- Jonathan Sterne Professor and James McGill Chair in Culture and Technology Acting Director, Media@McGill (2014-15) Department of Art History and Communication Studies McGill University http://sterneworks.org http://mcgill.ca/ahcs http://media.mcgill.ca MP3: The Meaning of a Format (Duke, 2012) -- On 24 March 2014, 21 people came together at Microsoft Research New England for a symposium called “What Is Music Technology For?” held just after the first Music Tech Fest in North America. Those at the symposium were motivated by a passion for music, a fascination with technology and culture, and a concern for how music technology is now developing. Recognizing the fertility of music technology as a subject that bridges computational, scientific, social scientific and humanistic approaches, we looked for common ground across those fields. We debated and developed a set of shared principles about the future of music technology. Built from the notes of that day’s event, and revised together in the weeks that followed, this manifesto is the collaboratively-authored product of this meeting. The symposium was organized by Nancy Baym, Microsoft Research, and Jonathan Sterne, McGill University.

Reminder: Special Issue on Transmedia & Games/IJGCMS
by Karen Schrier Shaenfield 21 May '14

21 May '14

Hi everyone! I hope everyone is having a great end of the semester/May and enjoying the nice weather! Sorry for any cross-postings. This is a reminder to submit to the special issue of IJGCMS on transmedia and games. The full manuscript is due on June 1st, which is less than two weeks away! -- The International Journal of Gaming and Computer-Mediated Simulations (http://www.igi-global.com/ijgcms) announces a call for papers for a special issue dedicated to the topic of Transmedia and Games guest edited by Dr. Karen Schrier (Marist College, New York). In this special issue of IJGCMS, we invite submissions that help us grapple with the relationship between transmedia and games. Transmedia means “across media,” (Jenkins, 2011), so it could refer to storytelling across media, or playing, writing, branding, learning, selling, creating and thinking across media, as well. Perspectives from a variety of fields—including education, design, computer science, advertising, communication, media studies, cultural studies, psychology or economics—are all welcome. The purpose of this special issue is to address these types of questions, and consider the relationship between transmedia and games. Authors are invited to submit manuscripts that: · Present empirical findings on the use of transmedia and games · Further our theoretical knowledge of games and transmedia · Conduct meta-analyses of existing research on transmedia and games · Present innovative case studies related to games and transmedia · Explore design, production, or implementation models or frameworks in relation to transmedia and games Possible topics to consider, in relation to transmedia, are: · ARGs · Learning and education · Fan, player, and audience participation · Business and funding models · Design and world creation · Global and local participation · Motivational factors · Writing and storytelling · Indie development · Branding and marketing · Co-creation between designers and players · Ethical implications · Distinctions among franchises, seriality, adaptations, and transmedia · Multimodality and intertextuality · Engagement, fun, and flow · Defining and redefining transmedia · Production and design processes Potential authors are encouraged to contact Dr. Schrier (Karen.Schrier(a)marist.edu) to ask about the appropriateness of their topic. Transmedial submissions are also welcome. Deadline for all types of submissions: June 1, 2014. Manuscripts should be submitted in APA format. They will typically be 5000-8000 words in length. Full submission guidelines can be found at: http://www.igi-global.com/journals/guidelines-for-submission.aspx Mission IJGCMS is a peer-reviewed, international journal devoted to the theoretical and empirical understanding of electronic games and computer-mediated simulations. IJGCMS publishes research articles, theoretical critiques, and book reviews related to the development and evaluation of games and computer-mediated simulations. One main goal of this peer-reviewed, international journal is to promote a deep conceptual and empirical understanding of the roles of electronic games and computer-mediated simulations across multiple disciplines. A second goal is to help build a significant bridge between research and practice on electronic gaming and simulations, supporting the work of researchers, practitioners, and policymakers.

Call for Abstracts for Chapters Volume 2 of the International Handbook of Internet Research
by jeremy hunsinger 20 May '14

20 May '14

Apologies for crossposting, please distribute as appropriate: Call for Abstracts for Chapters Volume 2 of the International Handbook of Internet Research (editors Jeremy Hunsinger, Lisbeth Klastrup, and Matthew Allen) Abstracts due June 1 2014; full chapters due Sept. 1 2015 After the remarkable success of the first International Handbook of Internet Research (2010), Springer has contracted with its editors to produce a second volume. This new volume will be arranged in three sections, that address one of three different aspects of internet research: foundations, futures, and critiques. Each of these meta-themes will have its own section of the new handbook. Foundations will approach a method, a theory, a perspective, a topic or field that has been and is still a location of significant internet research. These chapters will engage with the current and historical scholarly literature through extended reviews and also as a way of developing insights into the internet and internet research. Futures will engage with the directions the field of internet research might take over the next five years. These chapters will engage current methods, topics, perspectives, or fields that will expand and re-invent the field of internet research, particularly in light of emerging social and technological trends. The material for these chapters will define the topic they describe within the framework of internet research so that it can be understand as a place of future inquiry. Critique chapters will define and develop critical positions in the field of internet research. They can engage a theoretical perspective, a methodological perspective, a historical trend or topic in internet research and provide a critical perspective. These chapters might also define one type of critical perspective, tradition, or field in the field of internet research. We value the way in which this call for papers will itself shape the contents, themes, and coverage of the Handbook. We encourage potential authors to present abstracts that will consolidate current internet research, critically analyse its directions past and future, and re-invent the field for the decade to come. Contributions about the internet and internet research are sought from scholars in any discipline, and from many points of view. We therefore invite internet researchers working within the fields of communication, culture, politics, sociology, law and privacy, aesthetics, games and play, surveillance and mobility, amongst others, to consider contributing to the volume. Initially, we ask scholars and researchers to submit an 500 word abstract detailing their own chapter for one of the three sections outlined above. The abstract must follow the format presented below. After the initial round of submissions, there may be a further call for papers and/or approaches to individuals to complete the volume. The final chapters will be chosen from the submitted abstracts by the editors or invited by the editors. The chapter writers will be notified of acceptance by January 1st, 2015. The chapters will be due September 2015, should be between 6,000 and 10,000 words (inclusive of references, biographical statement and all other text). Each abstract needs to be presented in the following form: · Section (Either Foundations, Futures, or Critiques) · Title of chapter · Author name/s, institutional details · Corresponding author’s email address · Keywords (no more than 5) · Abstract (no more than 500 words) · References Please e-mail your abstract/s to: internet.research.handbook(a)gmail.com We look forward to your submissions and working with you to produce another definitive collection of thought-provoking internet research. Please feel free to distribute this CfP widely. CFP: Special Issue of the Journal of Faculty Development on Social Media
by Carpenter, Russell 20 May '14

20 May '14

Call for Papers May 2015 Special Issue of Journal of Faculty Development Guest Edited by: Russell Carpenter, Eastern Kentucky University Theme: Social Media in Pedagogy and Practice: Networked Teaching and Learning While many forms of social media are no longer considered “new,” their instructional uses continue to both inspire and challenge faculty and students. A variety of social media permeate the classroom whether used for pedagogical or personal purposes. Many instructors also use social media in their personal lives, but its role and potential in the classroom are still evolving. While the dynamic nature of social media provides a number of pedagogical opportunities to engage students in productive ways, integrating social media into class sessions and projects also presents new challenges not faced with other instructional technologies. This special issue invites scholars to highlight the most successful and promising strategies for integrating social media into the classroom while also considering the challenges these technologies present for teaching and learning. Authors might consider the best practices for integrating social media into the classroom for instructional purposes, theories and principles that support the decision to incorporate social media into classroom settings, challenges faced and approaches for overcoming these challenges, and projects that incorporate social media along with learning outcomes. Submissions might also explore, theorize, and assess innovative concepts, approaches, and strategies for classroom instruction using social media. Framing questions can include but are not limited to: ● What classroom activities are best suited for implementing social media? What specific projects might incorporate social media and how were these projects assessed? ● What are the best practices for using social media for instruction? ● How might various forms of social media engage student learning outcomes? What factors should instructors consider when deciding whether to employ social media? ● What are the theoretical frameworks for teaching with social media and how might they inform instruction? What training or professional development might benefit instructors exploring social media for classroom instruction? ● What issues and challenges arise when incorporating social media into the classroom, including political, social, and institutional contexts and expectations? What boundaries, parameters, or guidelines are necessary for classroom use of social media and how might they present challenges, if at all? ● What are the goals for incorporating social media into the classroom and how were these goals achieved, adapted, or revised? How might students contribute to these goals as they use social media in their own learning? Please send 500-word proposals and questions to Russell Carpenter at russell.carpenter(a)eku.edu<mailto:atrussell.carpenter@eku.edu>. Authors of accepted proposals will receive detailed guidelines for manuscript submission. Deadlines September 1, 2014: 500-word proposals due November 15, 2014: Authors notified of review results January 15, 2015: Full articles of 3,000 - 5,000 words returned to guest editor February 15, 2015: Article revisions sent to authors March 30, 2015: Final submissions due to guest editor Russell G. Registration for IR15: Boundaries and Intersections in Bangkok is now open! We’re happy to announce that our registration fees have remained flat since IR12 (2011) in Seattle. And, with much gratitude to our generous sponsors and association members, we are extremely pleased to announce this year the preconference workshops and the conference banquet are included in your registration fee! Extra banquet tickets can be purchased at an additional fee. Workshop space and banquet seating is limited, though, so register early! For more information and to register - please check out the conference wesbite <http://ir15.aoir.org/?page_id=142>. Hope to see you in Bankok in October!
