Colleagues, I'm delighted to announce that the Political Studies Association Media & Politics Group Annual Conference will be held this November at Bangor University in N.Wales, hosted by Bangor University's network for Media & Persuasive Communication. We welcome papers on any aspect of Media and Politics, or on this year’s conference theme of Media, Persuasion and Human Rights. While human rights may appear inalienable in international law and covenants, in fact they are sites of contestation, conflict and redefinition, variably implemented across the globe. Reflecting our theme, our key note speakers include Prof. Jon Silverman (University of Bedfordshire) who is currently working on the influence of the media's reporting of war crimes trials in West Africa on civil society. *Conference Date: *Mon. 10th - Tues. 11th Nov. 2014 *Website: * http://www.bangor.ac.uk/creative_industries/media-persuasion/index.php.en *Email: *mediapoliticsconference(a)bangor.ac.uk We seek papers on any of the following themes. 1. *Media and Politics* - any aspect. 2. *Media, Persuasion* *and Human Rights*, including: a) *Mediating Norms.* Jeremy Bentham once called human rights ‘nonsense upon stilts’. What is the philosophical status of human rights and how are deontic norms complicated, challenged and threatened by current geo-political events and their mediation? Are liberal social aspirations being redefined and eroded? Did they ever exist? What betterment do we have to aim for today? b) *Communicating Trade-offs.* When governments balance rights against each other (eg trading-off the right to privacy or freedom from torture in exchange for national security), how do the media respond? How does the complexity of decision-making and trade-offs get communicated? What are decision-makers’ insights on balancing and communicating rights? c) *Contestation and Articulation*. What human rights are privileged by, and contested through, the media? How have these changed over time? How do articulatory struggles play out across the media, and via what persuasive ‘actants’, including NGOs, investigative journalists, the public, lawyers, companies, corporations, governments, and international governance bodies? d) *Media Forms*. How does the struggle over articulation vary across different media forms and genres? How do minority media and the rise of mass self-broadcasting enable perverted viewing and production (eg torture porn, tour of duty war mementos), and with what implications for the normalization of abnormal situations (too taboo for mass view), and for the social enactment of human rights? e) *New Media, New Rights?* What novel opportunities and challenges do new media technologies present for human rights that intrinsically rely on the media, such as the right to privacy and freedom of speech? f) *Mobilisation*. In what ways do media inform and mobilise the public regarding their human rights? This may range from the practices of bearing witness (eg sousveillant communication); to the generation of empathy, intimacy, and a new solidarity through media forms that invoke engagement, identification and pleasure (eg Twitter, film, reality TV, comedy, music)? g) *Gender*. Is there such as thing as 'gendered' human rights? How does gender impact and influence mediated construction of human rights around the globe? How has the media engaged in the representation of gendered and sexualised human rights abuses (for example mass rape, comfort women, sex trafficking and enforced prostitution)? h) *Cultural Imperialism?* What are non-western insights on human rights liberal discourse, and how are these dealt with in various national and trans-national institutions ranging from satellite TV to the International Criminal Court? We encourage diverse responses to the theme, but are especially interested in interdisciplinary responses, not least from policy-makers, activists, philosophers, information-management specialists, computer scientists, journalists, security analysts, and those with expertise in law or politics. *Abstract submission* All proposals should include the following: title and name, institutional affiliation and address, and email address; together with, a paper title, an abstract of not more than 300 words, an indication of which theme(s) you are addressing, and up to five key words about your paper. Please also indicate whether or not you are a postgraduate student. Please indicate which section you wish your proposal to be considered under: 1. 10-15 minute panel presentation; 2. Practice-based work (15 mins - comprising showing of practice-based piece (or an extract) plus any accompanying discussion/context). Abstracts should be sent *by 1**st** July* to mediapoliticsconference(a)bangor.ac.uk . All abstracts will undergo peer review and decisions on papers will be given within 3 weeks of the submission deadline. *Postgraduates & James Thomas Memorial Prize* Postgraduate students are invited to submit a full paper that will be entered into the James Thomas Memorial Prize. This annual award is presented to the most outstanding paper by a postgraduate student at the Media and Politics Group Annual Conference. While abstracts must be submitted by 1st July, full papers must be submitted by 1 October 2014, to allow time for them to be reviewed by the MPG conveners. Dear AoIR Colleagues, For those of you studying various aspects of communication, collaboration and technology in globally distributed teams, groups, and networks, we invite you to submit a paper to the minitrack on Global Virtual Teams (GVT) for the 48th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS). HICSS-48 will be held from 5-8 January 2015 at the Grand Hyatt on Kauai. Yet for scholars, the selfie phenomenon represents a paradox. As an object, the selfie lends itself to cultural scorn and shaming. As a cultural practice, however, selfie circulation grows by the moment, moving far beyond the clichéd province of bored teenagers online. The rapid spread of camera-enabled mobile phones worldwide means that selfies have become a global phenomenon. Yet dominant discourses about what selfies are, and what they mean, tend to be extremely U.S. focused. In this special section, we aim to provide international perspectives on selfies. As an act of production, we are interested in why selfie-making lends itself to discussions featuring words like “narcissistic” or “empowering.” As a media genre, we are interested in the relationship of the selfie to documentary, autobiography, advertising, and celebrity. As a cultural signifier, we ask: What social work does a selfie do in communities where it was intended to circulate, and what happens when it circulates beyond those communities? As an emblematic part of the social media’s increased “visual turn,” selfies provide opportunities for scholars to develop best practices for interpreting images online in rigorous ways. Case studies of selfie production, consumption and circulation can also provide much needed insight into the social dynamics at play on popular social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, WeChat and Tumblr. We are seeking scholarly articles from diverse fields, and a wide range of theoretical and methodological approaches, including: media studies, communication, anthropology, digital humanities, computational and social sciences, cultural geography, history, and critical cultural studies. *Possible topics include, but are not limited to:* *Selfie as discourse:* What is the history (or histories) of the selfie? How do these histories map to contemporary media and scholarly discourses regarding self-representation, autobiography, photography, amateurism, branding, and/or celebrity? *Selfie as evidence*: What are the epistemological ramifications of the selfie? How do selfies function as evidence that one attended an event, feels intimate with a partner, was battered in a parking lot, is willing to be “authentic” with fans, or claims particular standing in a social or political community? One uploaded, how do selfies become evidence of a different sort, subject to possibilities like “revenge porn,” data mining, or state surveillance? *Selfie as affect:* What feelings do selfies elicit for those who produce, view, and/or circulate them? What are we to make of controversial genres like infant selfies, soldier selfies, selfies with homeless people, or selfies at funerals? How do these discourses about controversial selfies map to larger conversations about “audience numbness” and “empathy deficit” in media? *Selfie as ethics:* Who practices “empowering” selfie generation? Who does not? Who cannot? How do these questions map to larger issues of class, race, gender, sexuality, religion and geography? What responsibilities do those who circulate selfies of others have toward the original creator of the photo? What is the relationship between selfies and other forms of documentary photoan selfies be used as case studies to better understand the visual turn in social media use? How do selfies “speak,” and what methods might we develop to better understand what is being said? *Formatting and Requirements* To be considered for this collection, a paper of maximum 5,000 words (including images with captions, footnotes, references and appendices, if any) must be submitted by *June 15, 2014*. All submissions should be accompanied by two to three suggested reviewers including their e-mail addresses, titles, affiliations and research interests. Submissions will fall under the category of “Features” which are typically shorter than full research articles. All submissions must adhere strictly to the most recent version of the APA styleguide (including in-text citations and references). How do these discourses about controversial selfies map to larger conversations about “audience numbness” and “empathy deficit” in media? *Selfie as ethics:* Who practices “empowering” selfie generation? Who does not? Who cannot? How do these questions map to larger issues of class, race, gender, sexuality, religion and geography? What responsibilities do those who circulate selfies of others have toward the original creator of the photo? What is the relationship between selfies and other forms of documentary photography, with regard to ethics? *Selfie as pedagogy:* How can selfies be used as case studies to better understand the visual turn in social media use? How do selfies “speak,” and what methods might we develop to better understand what is being said? *Formatting and Requirements* To be considered for this collection, a paper of maximum 5,000 words (including images with captions, footnotes, references and appendices, if any) must be submitted by *June 15, 2014*. All submissions should be accompanied by two to three suggested reviewers including their e-mail addresses, titles, affiliations and research interests. Submissions will fall under the category of “Features” which are typically shorter than full research articles. All submissions must adhere strictly to the most recent version of the APA styleguide (including in-text citations and references). Papers must include the author(s) name, title, affiliation and e-mail address. Any papers that do not follow these guidelines will not be submitted for peer review. Dear all, I'm currently putting together a literature review on the changing media ecology of science and environmental journalism, with a view to the changes occasioned by the rise of new media, and I was wondering if anyone could help me with some advice. I think my major problem is that, without a background in media, I'm struggling even to really clarify what 'new media' means in this context. Even just pinning down the proliferation of technologies is a bit overwhelming and yet I can't really afford to spend more than a page or two on this. I don't think I have the vocabularity to capture how the internet allows traditional media (TV, radio, newspapers, books, etc.) to be accessed from new devices, provided in different ways, etc. and I feel there must be ways of categorising the different dimensions of change, of which I'm not aware. I was wondering if anyone could recommend any literature reviews that succinctly clarify the issues around defining the technological and social rise of new media in a way that can give me the background info to situate my literature review? I know it's a massive topic, but I need something to give me a handle on it, which won't take up too much of the time I should be giving to the rest of the review. Any recommended recent work on journalism and new media would also be great. Commonly the linguistic study of intercultural communication is concerned with analysing miscommunication between speakers from two or more different 'cultures', defined predominantly as large-scale nation and language communities. A downscaled notion of culture entails a fresh look at local cultures: subcultures, small groups, families, communities of practice; every group of persons who use common signs to create meaning-making ensembles of signs that relate to their life-world. We invite papers that address such themes.
