military communications?
by Charles Ess 19 May '14

19 May '14

Hi all, One of our Master¹s students wants to examine how businesses engaged in military production (including weapons and weapons systems) re-present themselves in their public communications - especially vis-a-vis (presumed) national reputations for / ostensible interests in peacemaking. This work is inspired by a previous MA thesis here examining how two prominent Norwegian military production companies re-present themselves in a country more widely known for the Nobel Peace Prize (and, for example, whose major national holiday - 17th of May - celebrates national independence primarily through children¹s parades: no military fly-overs, no military units in the parade, no military equipment on display, etc.) The focus, however, will be on a major weapons company in the U.S., and using a different method of analysis (on the ethos / rhetoric at work, rather than a frame analysis). We would be extremely grateful for 1) any suggestions for helpful research and related academic sources that might contribute? And/or 2) if anyone has good contacts with colleagues who work within these industries and who might be willing to be interviewed, suggestions along these lines would also be greatly appreciated. FWIW: I¹ll be attending the upcoming ICA, including two days of pre-conferences. If anyone would like to meet up over coffee or beer to talk about this project, I¹d be delighted. Many thanks in advance, - charles Professor in Media Studies Department of Media and Communication Director, Centre for Research on Media Innovations <http://www.hf.uio.no/imk/english/research/center/media-innovations/> Editor, The Journal of Media Innovations <https://www.journals.uio.no/index.php/TJMI/> My latest book, Digital Media Ethics, is now available from Polity: http://www.politybooks.com/book.asp?ref=0745656056 University of Oslo P.O. Looking for research on the negative well-being effects of News Feed browsing
by Galen Panger 19 May '14

19 May '14

Hi everyone (this is my first post to air-l!), I've been doing a bit of work looking into the finding by a few researchers including Burke et al. that News Feed browsing (and other forms of passive consumption in social networks) leads to lower well-being outcomes. Am trying to expand my horizons on the work that's been done exploring the possible causes of this effect; in interviews with Facebook users, for example, I've heard people talk about feeling like time on FB is wasted, or like they're seeing another (unattractive, irritating) side of their friends. Then, more academically, are suggestions that social comparison (everyone's cheery and accomplished and I compare unfavorably with that) or social transparency (I can see when my friends are hanging out without me) might also play a role. Google Scholar searches and the like haven't turned up much for me, but maybe (probably) I'm missing something—does anyone have work in this area that they can point me to, or suggestions of good work by others? I'd greatly appreciate some help expanding my understanding of the literature in this area. Thanks and best regards, Galen -- galen(a)ischool.berkeley.edu

CFP: HICSS 48 minitrack – Social Media and Location Information
by Jim T 17 May '14

17 May '14

Obligatory apologies for cross-posting. *HICSS 48 minitrack – Social Media and Location Information* Jim Thatcher and Britta Ricker would like to announce and invite submission to a new minitrack at the HICSS 48<http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_48/apahome48.htm> conference to be held this January 5-8, 2015 in Hawaii. The minitrack, *Social Media and Location Information <http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/HICSS_48/Tracks/DSM/DSMLocation.pdf>, *is a sub-track of the *Digital and Social Media <http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/HICSS_48/Tracks/DigitalandSocialMedia.htm>* track. The Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) will be held at the Grand Hyatt Kauai <http://kauai.hyatt.com/en/hotel/home.html> (more information on the venue is here<http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_48/accommodation48.htm>). The conference CFP is found here<http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_48/48CFP-final.pdf> . In addition to the amazing venue, HICSS is one of the top conferences in paper citation index rating. Papers are peer-reviewed and all accepted papers are published in the IEEE Digital Library and made available for free to all parties. The conference attracts a diverse, transdisciplinary set of researchers and promotes lively, interactive sessions and the cross-pollination of ideas. *Our Call for Papers follows:* This minitrack focuses broadly on the location information generated through the use of digital and social media with a particular emphasis on how that information may be collected and interpreted to better understand how location and environment intersect with social, political, and economic forces. We would like to attract papers that examine social media through an explicitly spatial lens. These would include papers interested in the technical praxis of gathering and visualizing spatial information as well as theoretical papers exploring the generation, capture, use, and exchange of spatial information with respect to social science theory. We call for papers that address the production, capture, and study of location information in social media through both technical and theoretical perspectives. Papers are encouraged to address “location information” in a broad sense that includes both precise geolocated coordinates and more general expressions of space and place. This includes, *but is not limited to*, papers that: - Offer new technical solutions to the capture, interpretation, or visualization of spatial media; - Examine the epistemological and ontological effects of spatial social media upon users; - Present empirical work on the creation or consumption of spatial social media; - Advance our understanding of how spatial social media relate to social and political processes; - Present new work on the role of economic forces in the creation and use of spatial social media, for example, location-specific advertising; or - Explore spatial social media as a means of better understanding urban and non-urban environments. The deadline for submission is *June 15th. *Please take a look at the *author instructions.* <http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_48/authorinstructions.htm> If you have any additional questions, don’t hesitate to contact Jim or Britta. http://jimthatcher.net/?p=104

Call for Internet Policy Research Proposals
by Center for Global Communication Studies 16 May '14

16 May '14

Call for Internet Policy Research Proposals The Center for Global Communication Studies is pleased to announce a call for proposals for its Internet Policy Observatory to organizations and individuals conducting research on the conditions, processes, and stakeholders that drive the development of internet policies at the national, regional, and international level. This call is particularly relevant to organizations and individuals interested in what countries do to influence the global internet, what we are calling the 'foreign policies of the internet.' Particular attention will be paid to proposals that look beyond the policies and narratives of European and North American actors to examine how 'emerging' actors and countries are influencing the debate. The thematic focus of the proposals may include, but is not limited to, one of the general areas: *Who and what are the conditions, processes, and stakeholders that are influencing the development of the internet nationally, regionally, and globally? *How are countries and other strategic global players using the internet to reach foreign policy objectives? *The effects of Snowden and the NSA revelations on the creation of internet policies and narratives about the internet in national/regional/and international contexts *An analysis of ‘multistakeholder’ internet governance fora and the stakeholders involved in the global internet governance debate *How normative frameworks and narratives about the internet are “exported” from one country or region to others *Cross-national or national surveys of internet users’ perceptions of key aspects of internet policy including trust, security, and censorship. *The negotiation between public and private governance online. The application deadline has been extended until June 6, 2014. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. For more information about this call and submission guidelines please see http://globalnetpolicy.org/our-research/call-for-proposals/

Papers are encouraged that address communities in a broad sense of its use, including communities of practice, epistemic communities, or communities of inquiry; as well as fully virtual communities, and social media use that supports or complements geographically based community. We particularly encourage papers that: advance our understanding of social network growth, formation, structure and outcomes through social media; advance out understanding of the design of social media technologies and practices for effective community development and maintenance; studies of socio-technical aspects of social media use that explore how the technology relates to social outcomes; theoretical studies that explore models and principles of social media design, use and outcomes. ================================================================================================= CFP: HICSS Social Media & Learning Minitrack Chairs: Maarten de Laat, Caroline Haythornthwaite, Shane Dawson & Dan Suthers Track: Digital and Social Media Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) 48, January 5-8, 2015, Kauai, HI http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/ FULL PAPERS DUE: June 15, 2014 via the HICSS conference system http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_48/48CFP-final.pdf http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/HICSS_48/Tracks/DSM/DSMLearning.pdf This minitrack calls for papers that address leading edge innovation, research methods and design to analyze and support learning through digital and social media. The ability to generate and maintain rich networked connections through social media, social networking, crowdsourcing, cloud technology, and social computing has a profound impact on the way we solve problems, learn, innovate and develop our identities, and the value this creates for individuals and groups. This minitrack will bring together state of the art research that furthers social theories of learning (such as networked learning, learning analytics, collaborative learning, viral learning, and social capital) situated in formal, non-formal and informal learning settings such as schools, higher education, organizations, workplace, leisure, communities and crowds. We call for papers that use, analyze and/or develop technologies, practices, and policies that examine social media and learning. We use the term 'social media' broadly to include many ways of interacting online and many forms of organizing online. We also use the term to include use of multiple media and welcome studies that address use across multiple platforms. We specifically welcome papers that address new and exciting areas of research in the potential of social media for new forms of learning, and the potential value social media creates for connectivity, development, and knowledge growth.
