Reminder: Concepts and Methods Workshop, UC, 27 August
by Mathieu.O'neil 15 May '14

15 May '14

Reminder - two weeks to deadline! Concepts and Methods Workshop: Structural Approaches to Online Communities and Networks News & Media Research Centre, University of Canberra Wednesday 27 August 2014 In this workshop graduate students and early-career researchers will have the opportunity to present their work (including work-in-progress) and obtain feedback from a panel of specialists. The workshop will be open to the public. The workshop has two main objectives. First, we wish to assess to what extent the methodological and conceptual tools used to analyse online communities can be applied to the personal networking behaviour of social media users. Second, we are interested in fostering a dialogue between, broadly speaking, ethnographic ("qualitative") and structural ("quantitative") researchers. Specialist panel: Professor Caroline Haythornthwaite, School of Library, Archival and Information Studies, The iSchool at The University of British Columbia Associate Professor Robert Ackland, Research School of Social Sciences, Australian National University Associate Professor Mathieu O'Neil, Faculty of Arts and Design, University of Canberra Panel members will discuss some of the latest conceptual and methodological developments in web social science, social network analysis, and online field theory. In addition, the workshop will represent an opportunity to explore connections and confrontations with: -content analysis -critical and feminist approaches -diffusion and information cascades -frame analysis -issue ballistics -mixed methods -organizational behaviour -sentiment analysis -social influence Applicants are encouraged to focus on key characteristics of online communities and networks, including but not limited to: -activist, diasporic and health communities -codes of conduct, rules and norms -emergence and disappearance -influentials and followers -mobilization and engagement -participant capabilities and skills -personal and collective identity -topologies of online communities Submission process: Proposals should be emailed to Mathieu O'Neil <mathieu[dot]oneil[at]canberra[dot]edu[dot]au> by 31 May 2014. As the research may not be complete, we do not expect abstracts to include all findings and conclusions. However abstracts should outline what kind of findings and conclusions the authors expect to present. Specifically the abstract should include: -the name, institutional affiliation, email address and contact telephone number of the presenter(s) -a title -a description of the paper's core topic, case, and/or argument -the methodological approach and theoretical background -the paper's relevance to related academic literature -expected findings or conclusions Proposal length should not exceed 400 words. More information can be found at the Workshop webpage: http://www.canberra.edu.au/faculties/arts-design/research/research-centres/…

The research context involves the aesthetic function arranged in school work digital home videos published on the internet, especially on YouTube digital sharing interface. This interface where the publications of the videos that are presented in a trial time of technological, market, cultural and social convergence are localizated, in particular has a speaker - in this case the young’s - as its main “spect-author” who lives and moves between this school and Digital Culture. The analytical theoretical line research in this composition is built on the concepts of Aesthetics and Attractor in dialogue with Bakhtin and Canevacci. On the threshold of this communication support, Massimo Canevacci discusses the concept of visual attractor while the high value fetish code that, coupled with good contemporary communication, seduces espetc-actors and performs silenced puzzles. From the philosophical inquiry and under his guidance, was used as a methodological tool for assessing the notion of aesthetic from the ethical-aesthetic principle that understands the Bakhtinian theoretical thinking articulated to life, focused on the socio-historical perspective same as the creation and the expression. The relevance of this process emerges from the single young enunciative chronotope that is manifested in the form of home made videos with a typical stylistic trait and systematically establishing “itself” in their incompleteness and digital dialogicity. An experience not only nurtured by intertextuality already offered by social digital networks, but also by the aesthetic activity around school spaces which this young people are now immersed. 2014-05-14 19:00 GMT-03:00 <air-l-request(a)listserv.aoir.org>: > Send Air-L mailing list submissions to > air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://listserv.aoir.org/listinfo.cgi/air-l-aoir.org > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > air-l-request(a)listserv.aoir.org > > You can reach the person managing the list at > air-l-owner(a)listserv.aoir.org > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of Air-L digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Digital Scholarship: Invitation to my Blogged Doctoral Exam
by jason c young 14 May '14

14 May '14

Dear Air-L Members, First, let me introduce myself to the wider community, since this is my first post here... my name is Jason Young, and I am currently a graduate student in Geography at the University of Washington. While I am still in the beginning stages of my PhD program, I am planning to use my doctoral research to explore the implications of digital technologies for Inuit as they engage in politics of environmentalism in the Arctic. I am writing to the listserv because I would like to invite you all to participate in a digital, scholarly experiment that I started last week. I have become increasingly interested in leveraging digital technologies to open up traditionally closed aspects of the graduate experience. In this spirit I decided to blog an aspect of my graduate work which is traditionally only open to the members of my doctoral community. In particular I blogged my Preliminary Examination this past weekend, which is essentially a practice version of our General or Comprehensive Exams. This exam is designed to explore what knowledge I currently have of relevant literature, in order to suggest further readings which will help me progress in my intellectual development. Opening the Exam process to many eyes has left me feeling a little vulnerable, especially since Prelims is designed to expose holes in my current academic knowledge. However, I am really hoping that this process might help me to gain access to and learn from a wide range of perspectives on my work, and also perhaps to provide a resource for other students as they go through similar exam processes. I thought Air-L might be a good target audience, both because you all might be interested in this type of digital scholarship and also because most of my scholarship has been limited to geographical understandings of technology. I would love suggestions and ideas on readings, etc., which might help me to explore the great work going on across other disciplines. If you are at all interested in the process, you can find more information here: < http://jasoncyoung.com/home/digital-experimentation-expanding-the-prelimina…>. I would certainly appreciate any time you might be able to spend taking a look at the exam, and highly encourage commenting! Thanks so much, Jason PS. Apologies for any duplicate emails via cross-posting!
