Full programme online! 21-22/5/2014 - Critical Ways of Seeing at Goldsmiths College, London.
by Elinor Carmi 14 May '14

14 May '14

Hello everyone, This two-day workshop and symposium is next week and we have the full programme online! If you are around London then drop by to one or all of the session, but be sure to register here--> http://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/critical-ways-of-seeing-21-22-may-2014-ticket… Critical Ways of Seeing 21-22/5/2014 Visualizing Knowledge and the Digital - Tool, Politics, or Art? Two Day Symposium and Master Class with Dr Philippe Rekacewicz (Head Geographer & Cartographer, Le Monde Diplomatique), Giulio Frigieri (Infographics, The Guardian), Alfredo Cramerotti (Mostyn, Wales' Contemporary Art Centre), Mushon Zer-Aviv (Media Activist, Tel Aviv/New York), Galia Offri (Artist/Tel Aviv), Stefano Cagol (Contemporary Artist, Italy) and Davina Jackson (d-city network). In critical media and communications research there has been a marked increase in interest in web-based ways of gathering, generating, and visualizing knowledge. These include digital tools that navigate and map the web itself, infographics, and interactive maps for research, policy-making, activism and advocacy. These techniques make use of official databases but increasingly work with "Big Data" as well as real-time forms of data-gathering through "crowdsourcing" to raise awareness about humanitarian crises, natural disasters, as well as mobilise people around a range of political and social issues. Humanitarian, environmental, and commercial uses of digital tracking, mapping, and crowdsourcing are not always compatible with each other, and they also raise challenging questions about freedom of expression, privacy, intellectual property rights, and research ethics based on informed consent. Moreover, the politics of ownership and control of our data and the data of others is becoming more urgent as large corporations and governments can accumulate this data and then grant or restrict access to it in non-accountable ways. Hosts: Global Media & Transnational Communications Program and Radical Media Forum of the Media & Communications Department, Goldsmiths College, University of London. Convener: Prof. Marianne Franklin, with Elinor Carmi and Paola Crespi. This two-day workshop brings world-renowned exponents of conventional and radical cartography, media digital activism, and contemporary art once again to the Media & Communications Department. When & Where: May 21-22, 2014, New Academic Building, Goldsmiths College, University of London.? All sessions are open to registered participants. For the full programme and more details please visit: http://radmediaforum.wordpress.com/2013-14-events-2/critical-ways-of-seeing… All the best, Elinor Carmi, MPhil/PhD Candidate, Department of Media & Communications, Goldsmiths College, University of London. www.pinkeee.com Twitter: @pinkeee_

Seeking postdoc in online privacy, smart objects, or data mining
by Robinson,Cory 12 May '14

12 May '14

3rd-year PhD student seeking postdocs in privacy-related research: I’m currently investigating difference in online disclosure of personal information between Americans and Estonians during Ecommerce. Why Estonia? Estonia is considered one of the most technologically developed and digitally connected societies in the world, and investigating their perceptions of disclosing personal information online may provide insights for other societies as they implement the models already in place in Estonia. I’m interested in current postdoc opportunities related to online privacy, smart objects, or ethics of data mining. As an American student, my knowledgeable of related global research centers is somewhat limited. Is anyone currently seeking a postdoc in the aforementioned areas, or know of research centers related to my research? Thanks in advance, - Cory -- Stephen Cory Robinson cory.robinson(a)colostate.edu<mailto:cory.robinson@colostate.edu> Office: Clark C258A http://colostate.academia.edu/StephenCoryRobinson

FINAL CALL: Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award 2014
by Mark D. Johns 12 May '14

12 May '14

CALL FOR AWARD APPLICATIONS Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award 2014 Sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research http://www.cccsir.com/ The Carl Couch Center issues an international call for student-authored papers to be considered for Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award. The Couch Center welcomes both theoretical and empirical papers that apply symbolic interactionist approaches to internet studies. According to basic symbolic interactionist premises, what we understand as self, identity, relationship, and cultural formations are constructed dialogically and interactively. While the works of George H. Mead, Georg Simmel, Erving Goffman and other leading symbolic interactionists have been integral to the study of social interaction, Carl Couch was among the first from this tradition to suggest the importance of engaging in the study of mediated interaction. It is critical that symbolic interactionists move boldly forward, beyond Couch's initial suggestion, to study what has become for many a dominant form of communication in their everyday life. Whether we research identities, emotion, memory, family, work, career, presentations of self, deception, love, loss or other areas, the impact of mediated communication is felt by those interacting within it. As internet-related media continue to influence our everyday interactions--not only with other people but also with technologies, devices, algorithms, platform parameters, and so forth--it becomes crucial for symbolic interactionists to attend to the role of these mediating factors in the interaction process. We encourage any paper that uses a symbolic interactionist approach in internet studies. We also encourage papers that explore the interface between deliberate social interaction and structured (or automated) interactions sponsored or enacted by various technological features, exploring not only how identities, relations, and social formations are negotiated through social interactions, but also how these interactions are mediated further through the use or capacities of various technologies. Papers will be evaluated based on the quality of (1) mastery of symbolic interactionist approaches and concepts, (2) originality, (3) organization, (4) presentation, and (5) advancement of knowledge. Those contemplating entering should note that an interactionist approach demands thoughtful analysis, and not mere description, of social interactions. Evaluation will be administered by a Review Committee of four: Mark D. Johns, Luther College, Decorah, Iowa Jennifer Dunn, Texas Tech University, Lubbock Annette Markham, University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee Camille Johnson-Yale, Lake Forest College, Illinois Competition is open to graduate or undergraduate students of all disciplines. Works that are published or accepted for publication are not eligible for award consideration. Entries should be in English and not exceed 30 pages (approximately 7500 words) in length, including references and appendices. Limit of one entry per student per year. The top paper will receive Couch Award to be presented at the 2014 meeting of the Association of Internet Researchers (aoir.org) in Bangkok, Thailand. The top paper will be awarded a certificate and a cash prize of $300 US and the author will be invited to present their work at a session of the AoIR conference, October 22-25, 2014 in Bangkok. Candidates should send a copy of their paper, with a 100-word abstract, electronically to Mark Johns at mjohns(a)luther.edu Application deadline is May 15, 2014. Notification of award will be sent by June 15. Those with questions or comments about Couch Award application, please contact: Mark D. Johns Communication Studies Luther College, Decorah, Iowa Phone: 563-387-1347 E-mail: mjohns(a)luther.edu

Call for Papers: ISA 2015
by Madeline Carr 11 May '14

11 May '14

Hello AoIR fellows, Those of you who work at the intersection of Internet technology and International Relations may be aware that in March, we had a new section approved at the International Studies Association (ISA) conference in Toronto. Science, Technology, Art and International Relations (STAIR) will allow us to share our work in a more focused way and also to begin incorporating work from other disciplines that have relevance for understanding the implications of technology for global politics. It should have special resonance with many of you who work on political aspects of Internet technology. Next year in New Orleans, we will present our inaugural program and I wanted to extend an invitation to any of you who may be interested to submit a paper or a panel/roundtable proposal. The CfP is below but don't hesitate to contact me or the program chairs (listed at the end) if you have any questions. Hope to see some of you in New Orleans! Madeline Call for Papers: International Studies Association 2015 Annual Convention Science, Technology, Art and International Relations (STAIR) Section Deadline: 1 June 2014 http://www.isanet.org/Conferences/NewOrleans2015/Call.aspx The newly chartered ISA section on Science, Technology, Art and International Relations (STAIR) recognizes that science, technology, and art are critical to global politics. They shape much of the everyday reality of international security, statecraft, development, design of critical global infrastructures, approaches to social justice, and the practices of global governance. Science, technology and art (i.e., in the form of creativity, the arts, architecture and design) permeate international affairs in the form of material elements and networks, technical instruments, systems of knowledge and scientific practices. They challenge existing conceptual approaches and prompt us to step beyond IR canons to seek inter-disciplinary collaborations. Through this new section we seek to generate the space for International Relations as a discipline to engage these matters through productive intellectual conversations with existing subsections as well as with other disciplines. STAIR will facilitate theoretical understandings of how we go about creating, assessing, and deliberating scientific, technological and artistic design and their impact on the shifts of contemporary world order. At the next ISA in New Orleans, (February 18th-21st) STAIR seeks to engage particularly with the impact of science, technology and art on ‘global IR’ and how scientific and artistic practices, technological infrastructures and artistic performances open up global understandings of international and global affairs. STAIR encourages submissions of individual papers, (innovative) panels and roundtables that explore the following themes: - the role of STS methods and sensibilities in International Relations - the different ‘regional’ impacts of science, technology and art on International Relations and, especially, the role of technologies and infrastructures in post-colonial contexts - the role of science, technology and art in the rise of non-Western countries and in global power shifts - the ways in which perspectives of science and technology studies (STS) on contemporary developments in science, technology and art challenge traditional modes and practices of International Relations - debates on understanding and misunderstanding the global politics of emerging technologies (such as nano-tech, surveillance instruments and systems, hacking software etc) - indigenous and non-Western technologies and their impact on contemporary global politics - exploring and critiquing the diversity of techno-fetishisms in international affairs - the role STS debates and concepts can play to reframe core notions of IR (including sovereignty, power, anarchy and governance) and to challenge normative assumptions in International Relations - innovative panels and roundtables that explore the possibility of a jointly ‘global’ and ‘interdisciplinary’ International Relations Theory. *Section Programme Chairs:* Michele Acuto, University College London – m.acuto(a)ucl.ac.uk Maximilian Mayer, University of Bonn – maximilian.mayer(a)uni-bonn.de For more info on STAIR & ISA visit: http://www.isanet.org/ISA/Sections/STAIR You can find out more about special elements (including career courses, workshops, innovative panels etc) of ISA’s program under "Special Convention Programs<http://www.isanet.org/Conferences/SpecialConventionPrograms.aspx>" area. Requesting recommendations on interesting digital ethnographies
by Carmel Vaisman 10 May '14

10 May '14

Dear colleagues, I'm teaching a graduate seminar next year on digital ethnographies and I'm covered when it comes to methodology papers or "the usual suspects" doing ethnogrpahies at AoIR. However, i am looking for interesting ethnographies i might not be aware of, ones that might be transgressive in nature, presenting new challenges or dealing with marginalized or unique populations. Less known and interesting works, possibly those of graduate students will be very much appreciated. Thank you, Carmel Vaisman, PhD.
