IIP Fall 14 Workshop CFP "Whose Information is It Anyway?
by Richard Denny Taylor 16 Jun '14

16 Jun '14

Colleagues, Kindly consider the following Call for Papers. Thank you. Richard Taylor Penn State Institute for Information Policy Whose Information Is It Anyway? In Search of a New Balance A by-invitation experts' workshop New America Foundation September 10-12, 2014 CALL FOR PAPERS Traditional notions of individual and public rights with respect to information are being redefined across a broad front, raising profound challenges to freedom of speech, assembly, association, and communication. The aggregation, archiving and use of information also have profound implications for the future of national security and business strategy. Currently, decision-makers are responding to capabilities enabled by new technologies, for which appropriate usage norms have not yet emerged, and are struggling to formulate coherent strategies addressing some fundamental questions. Can and should the legitimate demands of border security, law and order and the prevention of terrorism limit an individual's rights over personal and/or private information? What restraints on the collection, aggregation and use of personal information should exist? How do we balance the principles of zones of personal privacy, the right to control one's most personal information, and ownership rights over digital media, with the benefits of vibrant markets in information goods and services? Is there a general right to have one's personal information removed from all commercial digital databases? Are there practical models that respect human dignity without crippling data aggregators? Vociferous information ownership debates are taking place in the copyright and intellectual property fields as well. The digitization of content has enabled access to works that have not been in circulation for years, if not centuries. Yet some copyright/IP holders have suggested that works in the public domain, if not actively defended, should be privatized, and works that currently benefit from the time-limited protection of law for the public s benefit should become the permanent property of private rights holders, effectively ending the public domain. There are modest examples of alternatives: the Open Source community; the Creative Commons/copyleft movement; the increasing emergence of collaborative no-charge academic journals, etc. What are the practical models that strengthen the public domain, and still provide sufficient incentives for creative productions? We've heard the traditional answers to these questions and invite prospective authors to comment in an independent, scholarly, and innovative way on topics regarding control of information in the 21st Century. Multidisciplinary approaches are encouraged that combine theory and evidence to evolve integrative and long-term perspectives on information rights. The Institute for Information Policy (IIP) at Penn State and the X-Lab at the New America Foundation (NAF) are pleased to announce this call for papers that offer new (or updated) perspectives and theories about the balance between the rights of individuals, states, businesses and the public in information and personal data. Authors of selected papers will be invited to present them during a three day, invitation-only workshop designed to bring together a diverse group of experts and to be held at the New America Foundation in Washington, DC. This Workshop is the 9th in a series of events on "Making Policy Research Accessible," organized by the IIP, with the support of the Ford Foundation and the Media Democracy Fund. Presenters at the workshop will be invited to submit their completed papers for review by the Journal of Information Policy ( <http://www.jip-online.org> www.jip-online.org) The workshop will take place on September 10-12, 2014, the days leading to the 42nd annual TPRC conference. Invited topics include, but are not limited to: . Information policy and national security . Balancing privacy and security . Data mining and privacy . The SOPA/PIPA debate aftermath . New avenues for academic publishing . Personal freedoms in the digital age . Cybersecurity . Patent reform and patent "trolls" . Individual ownership of personal information . by Jim T 15 Jun '14

15 Jun '14

Hi everyone, Apologies, but we wanted to remind folks of the *June 15* deadline for submission to this mini-track. It's shaping up to be quite a good one. *Obligatory apologies for cross-posting.* *HICSS 48 minitrack – Social Media and Location Information* Jim Thatcher and Britta Ricker would like to announce and invite submission to a new minitrack at the HICSS 48 <http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_48/apahome48.htm> conference to be held this January 5-8, 2015 in Hawaii. The minitrack, *Social Media and Location Information <http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/HICSS_48/Tracks/DSM/DSMLocation.pdf>, *is a sub-track of the *Digital and Social Media <http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/HICSS_48/Tracks/DigitalandSocialMedia.htm>* track. The Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) will be held at the Grand Hyatt Kauai <http://kauai.hyatt.com/en/hotel/home.html> (more information on the venue is here <http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_48/accommodation48.htm>). The conference CFP is found here <http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_48/48CFP-final.pdf>. In addition to the amazing venue, HICSS is one of the top conferences in paper citation index rating. Papers are peer-reviewed and all accepted papers are published in the IEEE Digital Library and made available for free to all parties. The conference attracts a diverse, transdisciplinary set of researchers and promotes lively, interactive sessions and the cross-pollination of ideas. *Our Call for Papers follows:* This minitrack focuses broadly on the location information generated through the use of digital and social media with a particular emphasis on how that information may be collected and interpreted to better understand how location and environment intersect with social, political, and economic forces. We would like to attract papers that examine social media through an explicitly spatial lens. These would include papers interested in the technical praxis of gathering and visualizing spatial information as well as theoretical papers exploring the generation, capture, use, and exchange of spatial information with respect to social science theory. We call for papers that address the production, capture, and study of location information in social media through both technical and theoretical perspectives. Papers are encouraged to address “location information” in a broad sense that includes both precise geolocated coordinates and more general expressions of space and place. This includes, *but is not limited to*, papers that: - Offer new technical solutions to the capture, interpretation, or visualization of spatial media; - Examine the epistemological and ontological effects of spatial social media upon users; - Present empirical work on the creation or consumption of spatial social media; - Advance our understanding of how spatial social media relate to social and political processes; - Present new work on the role of economic forces in the creation and use of spatial social media, for example, location-specific advertising; or - Explore spatial social media as a means of better understanding urban and non-urban environments. The deadline for submission is *June 15th. *Please take a look at the *author instructions.* <http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_48/authorinstructions.htm> If you have any additional questions, don’t hesitate to contact Jim or Britta. http://jimthatcher.net/?p=104

[CFP] 5th Workshop on Semantics for Smarter Cities
by Tope Omitola 13 Jun '14

13 Jun '14

APOLOGIES FOR MULTIPLE POSTINGS CALL FOR PAPERS: 5th Workshop on Semantics for Smarter Cities Call For Papers: http://blog.soton.ac.uk/s4sc/ collocated with the 13th International Semantic Web Conference – Riva del Garda, Italy, 20 October, 2014. Important Dates (All deadlines are Hawaii time) 07.07.2014 – full paper submission deadline 31.07.2014 – notification of acceptance 25.08.2014 – submission of camera ready version 20.10.2014 – Workshop date ———————————————————————————————————————— 5th Workshop on Semantics for Smarter Cities Call For Papers collocated with the 13th International Semantic Web Conference – Riva del Garda, Italy, 20 October, 2014. The world’s population is rapidly urbanizing. By 2005, the world’s population had increased to 6.5 billion, with about 50% living in cities. By 2025, UN projections show that the world population is expected to exceed 9 billion with roughly 75% expected to live in cities. This rapid urbanization is continuing to put tremendous pressure on traditional urban infrastructures, such as roads, water, and energy, and on societal institutions. This urbanization challenges require new approaches that will transform modern cities to comfortable, economically successful, and environmentally responsible habitats. We are also seeing a rapid rise in the connection and usage of billions of low-end and affordable smart devices to the Internet, i.e. the Internet of Things, and witnessing the expansion of the Web into more areas of our personal lives. These trends make possible a new generation of smart city applications and services, with new smart city applications emerging as more data from different sources (e.g. from utility services, transport services, environmental data, and from social sensing) become available. These smart city data are large in volume, multi-modal, vary in quality, formats, and representation forms. These data need to be processed, aggregated, and higher-level abstractions need to be created from these data to make them suitable for the event processing and , knowledge extraction methods that enable intelligent applications and services for smart city platforms. Semantic Web technologies and Linked Data together with data analytics solutions play a key role in providing inter-operability, association analysis, information and knowledge extractions, and reasoning about trust, privacy, provenance, and security in smart city frameworks. Scope and Objectives This workshop will explore the interfaces between the Web, the Web of Data, and the City Smart environment. It will further explore how the Web, and the intelligences built on top of, and around the Web, can make the notion of the Smart Connected City possible and realizable. The workshop aims to gather researchers, city departments, service providers, application developers, entrepreneurs, and citizens to present and debate Semantic Web technologies, Linked Data and data analytics and evaluations for smart city applications as well as impact of user engagements and social networks. The workshop will also focus on related standardization activities in W3C, IEEE and ETSI. It continues on from the successful earlier workshops on the same theme at AAAI 12 (http://research.ihost.com/semanticcities12/) IJCAI 13 (http://research.ihost.com/semanticcities13/) SemCity13 (http://aida.ii.uam.es/wims13/semcity.php) and AAAI 14 (http://research.ihost.com/semanticcities14/) Topics of interest include but are not limited to: 1. Semantic platforms to integrate, manage and publish smart city data Provenance, access control and privacy-preserving issues in open data Collaborative and evolving semantic models for cities. Challenges and lessons learned Semantic data integration and organization in cities: social media feeds, sensor data, simulation models and Internet of things in city models Big data and scaling out in semantic cities. Managing big data using knowledge representation models Knowledge acquisition, evolution and maintenance of city data Challenges with managing and integrating real-time and historical city data. 2. Process and standards for defining, publishing and sharing open city data Platforms and best practices for city data inter-operability Foundational and applied ontologies for semantic cities. 3. Robust inference models for semantic cities Large-scale stream reasoning Semantic event detection and classification Spatio-temporal reasoning, analysis and visualization. 4. City applications involving semantic models Intelligent user interfaces and contextual user exploration of semantic data relating to cities Use cases, including, but not limited to, transportation (traffic prediction, personal travel optimization, carpool and fleet scheduling), public safety (suspicious activity detection, disaster management), healthcare (disease diagnosis and prognosis, pandemic management), water management (flood prevention, quality monitoring, fault diagnosis), food (food traceability, carbon-footprint tracking), energy (smart grid, carbon footprint tracking, electricity consumption forecasting) and buildings (energy conservation, fault detections) 5. Best way to work with translation provider and Qualtrics?
by Robinson,Cory 13 Jun '14

13 Jun '14

I’m preparing a cross-national survey using Qualtrics.com, and will deploy the survey in two languages. My translation provider is not familiar with the Qualtrics platform, and I’m leery of providing access to my account. Does anyone have recommendations for how to best translate a survey without having to provide account access to the translator? It does appear that Qualtrics allows one to download the survey as a CSV file, and then create a second survey upon importing a CSV file. A possible workflow: 1. Send the CSV file in the first language to the translator, 2. having translation completed on the sent file, 3. and then creating the second language survey by uploading the translated CSV file to Quatrics. Open and grateful for any suggestions! - Cory Robinson -- Stephen Cory Robinson cory.robinson(a)colostate.edu<mailto:cory.robinson@colostate.edu> Office: Clark C258A http://colostate.academia.edu/StephenCoryRobinson

Maddalena & Packer win of 2014 James Carey Award
by Mark D. Johns 13 Jun '14

13 Jun '14

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- June 13, 2014 Contact: Dr. Mark D. Johns, Executive Director Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research c/o Department of Communication Studies, Luther College Decorah, Iowa 52101 USA Tel: (563) 387-1347 email: mjohns(a)luther.edu Maddalena & Packer win of 2014 James Carey Award IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Kate Maddalena, a Ph.D. student at North Carolina State University, and Dr. Jeremy Packer, associate professor of communication at NCSU, are the winners of the 2014 James W. Carey Media Research Award competition sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research (www.cccsir.com) Maddalena and Packer are co-authors of a paper, The Digital Body: Telegraphy as Discourse Network, to be published later this year in the journal, Theory, Culture & Society. The Carey Award, established in 2004, is presented annually from among nominated or submitted books or journal articles published in the previous year. The award honors the late Dr. James W. Carey (1934-2006). Dr. Carey was recognized as one of the North American pioneers in applying cultural approaches to the study of mass media. To be worthy of the award, the work must be of highest quality and employ Carey's theories to focus on communication and public life, journalism, or popular culture. The winning entry this year was chosen from an exceptionally strong field of works submitted by a long list of outstanding scholars. "This article considers the use of flag telegraphy by the U.S. Signal Corps during the U.S. Civil War as it functioned as a proto-technical medium that preceded wire telegraphy as a military communications technology. Not only was flag telegraphy a historical step towards contemporary technical media, it was also an early iteration of the digitization of communication." A member of the review committee commented, "I thought Maddalena and Packer's article was the most interesting from a theoretical standpoint. They succeeded in applying new methods and theories to an old medium." The Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research is a non-profit organization established to promote the scholarship of the late Carl J. Couch and his academic associates. Couch is recognized as the founder of The New Iowa School in sociological and communication inquiry, and was a pioneer in the qualitative research of information technologies. The Center provides networking opportunities for students and scholars who conduct social and Internet research, inspired by Couch's work. - 30 -

Johns, Executive Director Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research c/o Department of Communication Studies Luther College, Decorah, Iowa USA 52101 Tel: (563) 387-1347 email: mjohns(a)luther.edu DeWolf Winner of Couch Award DECORAH, Iowa -- Ralf De Wolf, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Media and Communication Studies at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, is the winner of the 2014 Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award. The Couch Award is presented annually by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research (www.cccsir.com) and recognizes excellent student-authored papers. De Wolf's paper, "Intergroup Boundary Coordination and Privacy Rules: Using a Remix Approach for Studying Offline and Online Privacy in Youth Organizations" uses the concept of the "remix" to analyze how youth organizations negotiate their offline and online privacy. His work reveals how spatial, temporal, and social boundaries are lengthened and translated online to maintain privacy. However, explicit privacy rules adopted by youth organizations for offline environments create tension between individual and group privacy concerns. The Couch Award was established in 2002 as the centerpiece of an extensive awards program. Competition is open to graduate or undergraduate students of all disciplines, and winners are selected by a committee of university professors. The winner will receives a cash award as well as the opportunity to present the paper at the international conference of the Association of Internet Researchers in October. The Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research is a non-profit organization established to promote the scholarship of the late Carl J. Couch and his academic associates. The Center provides networking opportunities for students and scholars who conduct social and Internet research inspired by Couch's work. - 30 -
