Call for Submissions/Papers: Games and Transmedia
by Karen Schrier Shaenfield 28 Nov '13

28 Nov '13

Happy holidays and sorry for any cross-postings! ---- The International Journal of Gaming and Computer-Mediated Simulations (http://www.igi-global.com/ijgcms) announces a call for papers for a special issue dedicated to the topic of Transmedia and Games guest edited by Dr. Karen Schrier (Marist College, New York). In this special issue of IJGCMS, we invite submissions that help us grapple with the relationship between transmedia and games. Transmedia means “across media,” (Jenkins, 2011), so it could refer to storytelling across media, or playing, writing, branding, learning, selling, creating and thinking across media, as well. Perspectives from a variety of fields—including education, design, computer science, advertising, communication, media studies, cultural studies, psychology or economics—are all welcome. The purpose of this special issue is to address these types of questions, and consider the relationship between transmedia and games. Authors are invited to submit manuscripts that: · Present empirical findings on the use of transmedia and games · Further our theoretical knowledge of games and transmedia · Conduct meta-analyses of existing research on transmedia and games · Present innovative case studies related to games and transmedia · Explore design, production, or implementation models or frameworks in relation to transmedia and games Possible topics to consider, in relation to transmedia, are: · ARGs · Learning and education · Fan, player, and audience participation · Business and funding models · Design and world creation · Global and local participation · Motivational factors · Writing and storytelling · Indie development · Branding and marketing · Co-creation between designers and players · Ethical implications · Distinctions among franchises, seriality, adaptations, and transmedia · Multimodality and intertextuality · Engagement, fun, and flow · Defining and redefining transmedia · Production and design processes Potential authors are encouraged to contact Dr. Schrier (Karen.Schrier(a)marist.edu) to ask about the appropriateness of their topic. Transmedial submissions are also welcome. Deadline for all types of submissions: June 1, 2014. Manuscripts should be submitted in APA format. They will typically be 5000-8000 words in length. Full submission guidelines can be found at: http://www.igi-global.com/journals/guidelines-for-submission.aspx Mission IJGCMS is a peer-reviewed, international journal devoted to the theoretical and empirical understanding of electronic games and computer-mediated simulations. IJGCMS publishes research articles, theoretical critiques, and book reviews related to the development and evaluation of games and computer-mediated simulations. One main goal of this peer-reviewed, international journal is to promote a deep conceptual and empirical understanding of the roles of electronic games and computer-mediated simulations across multiple disciplines. A second goal is to help build a significant bridge between research and practice on electronic gaming and simulations, supporting the work of researchers, practitioners, and policymakers.

CFP: Digital Technologies and Social Transformations: What Role for Critical Theory?
by Delia Dumitrica 27 Nov '13

27 Nov '13

CFP: Digital Technologies and Social Transformations: What Role for Critical Theory? Special Issue of the Canadian Journal of Communication Guest Editors: Delia Dumitrica and Sally Wyatt Contact email: cjcissue(a)ucalgary.ca In the past two decades, social research on the role of digital technologies in contemporary transformations has increasingly emerged as a disciplinary field in its own right. This has entailed a shift away from optimistic accounts of the alleged potential of these technologies to address social problems and alleviate inequalities, to a more nuanced understanding of the mutual shaping of digital technologies and existing social structures. Calls for recuperating the role of critical theory in understanding digital technologies (e.g. Feenberg 1991, 1999; Fuchs 2008, 2009) have emphasized the need to develop and refine suitable conceptual and methodological tools. The aim of this special issue is to map the use of critical theory in research on digital technologies. These technologies are often lauded for their capacity to harness creativity and knowledge, and proposed as a quick fix to the challenges and shortcomings of traditional hierarchies of power. Critical theory has emerged as an effort to constantly relate reflection on social aspects to existing configurations of power. The special issue brings together current research seeking to relate interpretation of digital technologies to power relations. The notion of power remains, of course, a notoriously problematic one; from its Marxist definition as (class) oppression to the post-structural (Foucaultian) power/knowledge pair, the common thrust of critical approaches has been to expose inequity and create conceptual and material spaces where more fair and egalitarian social arrangements can be imagined and enacted. Authors are encouraged to reflect on the role of power, in all its aspects, in their approach to digital technologies. We welcome a diverse approach to critical theory, including (but not restricted to) the traditional Marxist framework developed by the Frankfurt School, as well as subsequent revisions stemming from post-structuralism, postmodernism, feminism, queer theory, postcolonialism and indigenous epistemologies. We are also particularly interested in approaches that draw upon Canadian traditions, such as those inspired by the work of McLuhan, Smythe, Mosco, etc. Submissions should directly engage with the question of power, either in terms of conceptualizing technology or in terms of reflecting on technologys role in social transformations. We invite authors to submit papers exploring this problematic with reference to diverse themes and cases, including, but not limited to studies of: - Digital technologies and democratic/economic empowerment (e.g. destabilizing authoritarian regimes; alleviating the democratic deficit; including marginalized or disenfranchised groups; new forms of politics, etc.); - Digital technologies and the state (e.g. security; cybercrime; public policy; governance, etc.); - Digital technologies and power in everyday life (e.g. cyber-identity; sociability; social ties; social capital; networks; mundane Panopticism; etc.); - Digital technologies and relations of production (e.g. immaterial labor; knowledge creation/mobilization; big data; cloud computing; cultural production; etc.); - Digital technologies in social sciences (e.g. critical thinking; modes of learning; evaluation and monitoring of scholarly labor, gamification, etc.). Extended abstracts (600 words) will be accepted until December 1, 2013. Abstracts should explicitly discuss how the role of power/ critical theory will be addressed in the context of the respective argument/ case. Please include a prospective title, 5-7 keywords and a short bio-note about yourself. We welcome abstracts in either English or French. The editors will review the abstracts and invite submission of full-length papers (7,000 9,000 words) for blind peer-review. An invitation to submit a full-length paper is not a guarantee that the paper will be accepted, and all articles will undergo a peer-review process. Deadline for the submission of full-length papers: March 1, 2014. To submit your abstract, or for any further queries regarding this special issue, please contact the issue editors directly: cjcissue(a)ucalgary.ca All submissions should follow the Canadian Journal of Communication submission guidelines: http://www.cjc-online.ca/submissions Works Cited Feenberg, Andrew. DEADLINE REMINDER: CFP – Hashtag Publics (Edited Book Collection) – Nov 30
by Nathan Rambukkana 27 Nov '13

27 Nov '13

(will apologies for cross-posting) Hello All, The deadline is fast approaching for our proposed edited book collection Hashtag Publics. If you were planning on submitting something, please note the Nov 30 abstract deadline (and if you have something in mind, but cannot make that date, please get a hold of me by then to express your interest). All the best, Nathan -- Hashtag Publics: The Power and Politics of Networked Discourse Communities (Edited Collection) Much has been written about the public sphere potential of blogs and microblogs (e.g. Siles, 2011; Papacharrissi & Oliveira, 2012; Bastos et al. 2013), as well as the political potential of online space in general (e.g. Bohman, 2004; DeLuca & Peeples, 2002; Downey & Fenton, 2003). In fact, since the dawn of the Internet age, discussion of the democratic potential of Internet-mediated space has been one of the major top-level conversations. And yet, a lot of that discussion gets mired in an orthodox Habermassian take on what we can—or should—consider a democratic public sphere, i.e., one where rational critical discourse on matters of societal importance (such as, most critically, the actions of the State) can take place by citizens stepping out of their private roles as interested individuals and into a public space where disinterested discussion and debate could occur. While one can argue the merits of Habermas’s public sphere, this collection looks broader, widening its ambit to take in the other kinds of discussion and debate that are facilitated by networked technology. Taking our cue from critical public sphere theorists such as Nancy Fraser and Michael Warner, this collection is interested in those Other publics. More-or-less subaltern, more-or-less rational, more-or-less critical, and almost certainly partial, affective, interested and loud. It’s interested in angry publics. It’s interested in fringe publics. It’s interested in the kinds of publics that do politics in a way that is rough and emergent, flawed and messy, and ones in which new forms of collective power are being forged on the fly, and in the shadow of loftier mainstream spheres. Specifically, this collection will investigate the publics of the hashtag, that piece of twice-repurposed typographical meaning, that rebel punctuation moving to establish itself in new regimes of discourse and communication—beyond its birth as a “pound” or “number” sign; beyond its digital neonacy as a symbol marking out IRC channels in the hay-day of early 90s chatroom enthusiasm (Zappavinga 791); beyond it’s re-appropriation as a ground-up search symbol in tweets; to how it has the potential to organize new structures of discussion, new “potential discourse communities” (Zappavinga 801) where in-line metadata acts as both text and metatext simultaneously (801), drawing entangled discourse together across technologies in a way that is both new and worthy of more sustained study. Hashtags are hybrids in the taxonomy of types of information. They are both text and metatext, information and tag, pragmatic and metapragmatic speech. They are deictic, indexical—yet what they point to is themselves, their own dual role in ongoing discourse. Some have argued that when it comes to the online organization of information there is a tension of type between chronological and contextual modes (Benovitz 124). Chronological organization (for example, a thread) can sometimes fail to address the contextual embeddedness of a conversation; while contextual organization (for example, through a hyperlink) might be able to provide greater context (Benovitz 124), yet itself risks loosing a temporal aspect, how a topic has developed over time. The hashtag, functions in the space between the contextual and the chronological. It’s a node of continued context across media, conversations and locales, and yet it emerges temporally, self-developing through time, pointing to itself as it points to the other texts it marks as within its ambit. In this way hashtags push the boundaries of specific discourses. In their development they are proposed and either sink back into the woodwork or rise to prominence through repetition, through use, through uptake (Bruns, 2011). The hashtag has the ability to mark the discursive boundaries of an event, and are in fact events themselves, striding that dual role as text and metatext. Some previous studies have looked at the role of hashtags in relation to political discourse. Most of these are centred around analyzing how the hashtag operates on Twitter during major—but usually temporally short—political events. Studies of hashtags such as #Jan25 #Tahrir, #Egypt and #spill have been analyzed, for example, with respect to their role in Arab Spring protests and revolutions (e.g., Papacharissi & Oliveira, 2012) and the 2010 BP spill in the Gulf of Mexico (Bruns & Burgess 2012). On a short timescale, events and studies such as these demonstrate how the hashtag can work as a uniting thread of discourse that allows those who use it to feed into an ongoing and evolving conversation—even to contribute to a critical mass that can be a part of forcing change. This collection will build on this foundational research but will also be interested in looking as political hashtags on longer time scales, and for events that are ongoing. It’s also interested in how these kinds of hashtag can spill beyond Twitter into other spaces of social networking—such as recent uptake of hashtag mechanics on Facebook—and even to other media spaces such as television and print. Topics can include, but are not limited to: ## The role of hashtags in developing spot or ongoing protest movements (e.g., #Iran (Bastos, et al 2013), #occupy (Milberry, 2013). ## The way hashtags can work to assemble critical oppositional theory and politics (e.g., #RaceFail (Rambukkana, 2013), #feminism, #anticapitalism, #homophobia, #equality, #IdleNoMode). ## The use of hashtags to target specific news or political issues over longer time scales (e.g., #climatechange, #robocalls, #shitharperdid, #RobFord). ## The spill of hashtags (especially political hashtags) into other applications and media technologies such as Facebook, blogs, news site comment threads, Pinterest, Flickr, Television, Print. ## The use of hashtags as ways to link and bolter subaltern publics and the identities and communities therein (e.g., #polyamory, #trans*, #desi, #goth, #metal, #comiccon, #fanfiction, #slash). ## The use of hashtags to create both physical and virtual common spaces through practices such as live-tweeting conferences, protests, events, live news, etc. ## Papers focusing on the deep theory of the hashtag along political and public sphere dimensions, especially in relation to topics such as affect and anger, entanglement and networks, virtual/actual space and hashtags as events. ## Papers focusing on the methodologies of researching the hashtag that use political or subcultural examples as case studies. The goal is to assemble a collection of exemplary abstracts and then approach some top-tier academic publishers with social media studies/technology studies/digital studies collections. If interested, please send a 750-word abstract, collection of keywords and a 150-word bio to the editor, Dr. Nathan Rambukkana (n_rambukkana(a)complexsingularities.net) by 30 Nov. 2013. Looking for panelist on Online Gender Gap for AEJMC Midwinter Conference, Norman, OK Feb. 28-March 1
by Kristin Dagmar Eckert 26 Nov '13

26 Nov '13

Hi everyone A colleague and I are still looking for one more panelist to join our panel for the AEJMC Midwinter Conference, Norman, OK Feb. 28-March 1. If you are interested please e-mail Stine Eckert at keckert(a)umd.edu or Candi Carter Olson at ccartero(a)gmail.com immediately. (Remember the deadline to submit our panel is December 1.) Panel proposal: Where the Women Are: Can creating safe spaces and media training programs even the gender gap in online media? Several studies have shown that men’s voices far outnumber women’s in opinions, editorials, and information production, even online. While the Pew Internet and American Life foundation notes that women do dominate on social media, with 70 percent of female internet users, and 62 percent of men holding a social media account, the 2012 OpEd Byline report shows that women account for only 33 percent of new media bylines. Digital feminism is revolutionizing the ways that the feminist movement engages new audiences in its messages, but digital feminists aren’t always recognized as valuable, radical voices in the movement. After the 2013 PBS documentary Women Who Make America aired, digital feminists took the internet to ask, “Where were we?” Jill Filipovic (Feb. 27, 2013) of the Guardian wrote, While young feminists may not be taking over Fifth Avenue or the offices of Ladies Home Journal, we are taking over the internet….It’s nearly impossible to go on a liberal-minded blog and be more than a click away from a dedicated feminist one. Feminism has so infiltrated the women’s internet that I’m hard-pressed to think of a women’s website—the kind of online properties that have largely replaced traditional women’s print magazines—that doesn’t have both a strong undercurrent of feminism and at least one explicitly feminist writer on staff. Women struggle to make ground in legacy media, where Carolyn Byerly’s 2011 Global Report on the Status of Women in News Media found that women are outnumbered by men 2:1 across the newsroom and 3:1 in management and governing positions. On the Internet, however, women are finding spaces and ways to even gender gaps, even as many of the same structures of gender inequality bridge into the online environment. This panel will examine ways that women are evening the online gender gap by employing activist strategies, education and traditional journalism to spread the feminist message today and create full gender parity in the future cyber-world. In particular, this panel will examine spaces for young women on the internet and the potential of training programs to eventually even the gender gap. These panelists will question whether new media training can succeed in turning young women into future online media leaders when similar projects have failed for other mediums. For example, journalism schools are dominated by women, and yet the amount of women in leadership positions in newsrooms has continued to hover around 30 percent. This panel will also question why digital feminists remain unrecognized by the broader women’s movement, a situation the replicates a historical split between professional newswomen’s work and the women’s movement. Finally, it will examine digital feminism’s many successes, such as forcing Facebook to “do better” about allowing hate speech and misogynistic rhetoric to flourish on its site and twitter storms to draw attention to injustice, and some of the places that cyber-feminism still needs to work.
