With best wishes, Annalisa Murgia & Maurizio Teli ****** *Call for **abstracts* *V Ethnography and Qualitative Research Conference.* Bergamo, Italy *5-7* *June** 2014* *website: *www.etnografiaricercaqualitativa.it *Proposed session: * *It’s a free work… When work relations become passionate* *Session Organizers* Annalisa Murgia, University of Trento, Italy, *annalisa.murgia(a)unitn.it*<annalisa.murgia(a)unitn.it> Maurizio Teli, <ahref Foundation, Trento, Italy, maurizio(a)ahref.eu In contemporary knowledge society, both creativity and the ability to put into play personal resources are recognized as precious and valuable competences. With this workshop, we want to stimulate a reflection within the debate on *free work *(Beverungen et al. 2013; Chicchi et al. 2013), starting with the ambivalent meaning of the word *free*, referring both to the absence of a price and to the domain of freedom. We invite to elaborate on the double face of contemporary work: on one side, it is characterized by low or absent wages, it is so intrusive to become totalizing; on the other side, it is often based on informal registers, on subjects’ desire for freedom, and on the confusion between free time and working time. Drawing upon the contribution on free software development by the anthropologist Christopher Kelty (2008), we can frame this social phenomenon as the expansion of voluntary activities that intertwine with work activities in many forms. What is common among software developers – and among others who describe their work primarily as a passion – is not only the individual expression of creativity, but also the translation of the playful-affective dimension in recursive processes of relation, processes that bring to a preoccupation for the institutional, technological, political and economical conditions which the particular community and its productive activities are based on. These are, therefore, working experiences (paid or unpaid) in which the subjects’ identification and self-expression are conveyed both by putting life itself at work (Morini e Fumagalli 2010; Fleming 2012) and by questioning the social relations within which work is realised (Borghi et al. 2011). The proposed subject of analysis is as wide as heterogeneous, and it includes knowledge work, the creative industries and high tech production chains, emotional and caring work, all sharing the ambivalences of free work. What are the characteristics of the activities wherein subjects invest their affections and desires and that become incorporated by the rhetoric of work as a mission? If, on one side, free work makes economically valuable free expert activities, can it allow the emergence of new forms of collective action? How can we understand the main traits of such phenomenon, in particular from a methodological perspective? *References* - Beverungen, A., Otto, B., Spoelstra, S., Kenny K. (eds.) Dear all, Please consider sending an article for the special section of Mobile Media and Communication on News Consumption in the age of mobile media. Guest Editor Oscar Westlund will be accepting abstracts. The abstracts are due by January 3rd 2013. Please send them to oscar.westlund(a)jmg.gu.se or oswe(a)itu.dk (with “*Mobile Media & Communication *special section” in the subject line), and should be accompanied by an abbreviated biography (approx. 200-300 words). Please see the CFP below for more details. -- Rich L. *News Consumption in an Age of Mobile Media * Call for papers for a special section of *Mobile Media & Communication * titled “News Consumption in an Age of Mobile Media”, to be published in volume 3:2, 2015 (http://mmc.sagepub.com) *Guest Editor*: Oscar Westlund, PhD, Associate Professor, the University of Gothenburg (SWEDEN) and the IT University of Copenhagen (DENMARK) Having their mobile device continuously within an arm´s length has changed the ways people access the news in their everyday life. This marks a recent change in society that raises numerous important research inquires. A retrospective glance shows that the mobile phone has diffused around the globe during the 1990s and 2000s. This development has made mobile communication at any time and any place possible. Now, feature phones have increasingly been displaced by smartphones, which nowadays constitute the major portion of mobile devices being sold globally. Facilitated by the mobile internet, convergence and technological developments of computing and hardware, these mobile devices provide networked functionalities, touch-screen interfaces and mobile ecosystems loaded with customized apps as well as accessibility to responsive web designs. Such mobile devices have in recent years become adopted, used and domesticated in a plethora of ways and situations. Alongside these we find that also tablets have gained significance, offering largely similar affordances (although not traditional voice calls), but with slightly larger screen sizes. Mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets can be used for functionalities, such as search engines, social networking sites, games and utility services, but also news provided by both legacy news media and new publishers. Mobile news has gained precedence not only in the interstices of our everyday lives, but also, many people have established the mobile device as a key way in which to keep informed about the news. This special section focuses the salient case of *access to and use of mobile news. *The social, cultural, and technological phenomenon of mobile news constitutes an important area of mobile media development. More importantly, mobile news also marks a paradigmatic shift to the role news plays in our everyday lives. This development also has great impact on the future of journalism and legacy news media. This special section of the international journal *Mobile Media & Communication *will bring together scholarly work that examines the evolving nature of news consumption with mobile devices. The issue welcomes theoretical essays, research reviews and empirically sound articles exploring a range of phenomena found in the nexus of mobile devices and news. TFull articles should be no more than 7,000 words in length, including references, etc. Please submit an abstract of 700-800 words that clearly spells out the theoretical construct, research questions, and methods and results. For empirical studies still in progress, please outline the current state and the timeline. Also include the names, titles, and contact information for 2-3 suggested reviewers. Abstracts are due by January 3rd 2013, to oscar.westlund(a)jmg.gu.se or oswe(a)itu.dk (with “*Mobile Media & Communication *special section” in the subject line), and should be accompanied by an abbreviated biography (approx. 200-300 words) Providing the abstract meets the criteria for the call, and is selected for inclusion in the special section, full manuscripts are due by March 15th 2014. Submission of full papers is done through http://mmc.sagepub.com, and these will be peer-reviewed prior to considered for acceptance. 2 post docs in the Living Archives project at Malmö University, Sweden
by Marie Gustafsson Friberger 20 Nov '13

20 Nov '13

The Living Archives project at Malmö University is looking for two two-year post docs. One position is for candidates with a background in computer science. Relevant backgrounds for the other position is cultural studies, memory studies, artistic or performance research, media and communication studies, or closely related subject area. Living Archives is a research project funded by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) and run by Malmö University. The official title of the project is Living Archives: Enhancing the role of the public archive by performing memory, open data access and participatory design. More information about the project: http://livingarchives.mah.se/about/ The Post Doctorate based in the Faculty of Technology and Society will address the creation and use of archives, combined with open data aspects. Relevant aspects include metadata, linked data, mobile devices, physiological data, gaming and crowdsourcing. Further, it is relevant to explore how to mobilize the archive by moving it onto mobile platforms and explore how live data communicated by mobile devices might become instant archives. Ideally, prototype development and evaluation will be combined with critical perspectives in order to establish tools, methods, and best practices in this area. The Post Doc may propose a sub project relevant to the goals of the Living Archives project, or he/she may choose to collaborate actively with one of the sub projects already existing in the Living Archives project. The Post Doctorate based in the Faculty of Culture and Society will take a social, cultural and critical perspective on archives. This candidate should have a background in cultural studies, memory studies, artistic or performance research, media and communication studies, or closely related subject area. This person might analyze how digital archives for cultural heritage can become social resources, how they can facilitate social change, create cultural awareness and collective collaboration. She or he might also attend to those archiving practices that are not institutionalized or formally recognized: diverse, heterogeneous archiving practices that occur constantly but are largely unacknowledged. Contemporary practices associated with mobile media, storytelling, gaming, open data, and performance are relevant. The Post Doc may propose a particular sub project relevant to a specific archive or set of archiving practices, or they may choose to collaborate actively with one of the sub projects already existing in the Living Archives project. More information about the positions can be found here: http://livingarchives.mah.se/2013/11/post-doctorate-positions/ Application deadline: December 10, 2013

International Conference on 'Crony Journalism: Redefining Journalistic Practices' on 18-19 January, 2014 at the Centre for Journalism & Mass Communication, Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, India
by Mausumi Bhattacharyya 20 Nov '13

20 Nov '13

*International Conference on 'Crony Journalism: Redefining Journalistic Practices' on 18-19 January, 2014 at the Centre for Journalism & Mass Communication, Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, India* *A Brief Word about Visva-Bharati:* A study of the evolution of Visva-Bharati during the lifetime of its founder, Rabindranath Tagore, offers an insight into what this institution was intended to achieve. Rabindranath Tagore, the Nobel Laureate, founded a school for children at Santiniketan and it was around this nucleus that the structure of an unconventional university developed through careful planning. In May 1951, Visva-Bharati was declared to be a Central University and "An Institution of National Importance" by an Act of Parliament. It was granted the status of a unitary, teaching and residential university. The status and function of all the major institutions have been redefined in successive Amendment Acts and the University has continued to grow by giving accreditation to new institutions in response to needs newly felt. Visva-Bharati is ensconced in a rural setting in the district of Birbhum, about 160 km by road from Kolkata. The nearest railway station is Bolpur (Santiniketan) on the Eastern Railway and the air-terminal is Kolkata Airport. The University campus at Santiniketan, about 3 km from the railway station can be reached in a little over two hours from Kolkata by train. By train it is about 146 km. The University has two campuses, one at Santiniketan and the other at Sriniketan, which is about 3 km from Santiniketan. The institutional buildings and departments are distributed among them. *A Brief Word about Centre for Journalism and Mass Communication (CJMC):* Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore's interest in media and communication is well known. His contribution to different literary journals and his naming Indian Broadcasting Service as “Akashbani” testify to this. Visva-Bharati started its Centre for Journalism and Mass Communication in 2000, with PG Diploma Course in Journalism and Mass Communication, reflecting the founder’s mindset. The Centre started preparing future communicators and fine-tuned them for connecting with people across the world. A full-fledged two-year MA course started in 2003-2004 with 25 students. Today, the Centre takes pride in offering PhD course as well. The PG degree curriculum is different here with thrust on all the media tools, ranging from print to electronic, from broadcasting to narrowcasting, from the very beginning. Initiation to the practicalities of communication is early, so that the absorption is complete. Students undertake visual, radio and newspaper projects in the first two semesters of study. These two semesters also have Communication Principles, Media Laws, History of Press, Heritage and Cultural Studies (with thrust on Tagore Studies) in the course. Third semester is devoted to Advertising, Public Relations, Development and Rural Communication. Every student specializes with one of the subjects among Magazine Journalism, Media Management and Science Journalism in the fourth semester. In this semester, every student completes a dissertation and undergoes media training too. It is one of the very few media learning institutions, which has its training publication (lab journal), *“Visva-Bharati Chronicle”*. This is a tabloid publication, which is ‘of’ the students and ‘by’ the students but ‘for’ the entire community. It gives the budding communicators a real taste of the practical field of journalism. *About The Seminar:* “We live in a system that espouses merit, equality, and a level playing field, but exalts those with wealth, power, and celebrity, however gained.” -Derrick Bell, Ethical Ambition The latter half of the last millennium was taken by storm by a particular idea of social evolution. The idea was that of meritocracy as given by Michael Young in his seminal work, ‘The Rise of the Meritocracy’. Young in his work satirizes the concept of meritocracy which he feels shall give way to deep discontent and ultimate rejection of the same. Fifty-five years later, today we find that Young’s assertions have indeed come true. While the idea of meritocracy is one that is apparently supported by all, nevertheless, it is an idea that is mostly limited to utopian discussions. While a lot is being said about the role and importance of the fourth estate, the media, in today’s world, the facts remain to say that the media today is plagued by a number of issues. However, perhaps the danger that haunts the media scenario the most today is the nexus between the powers that be and the media houses. This nexus between the outsiders and the insiders pertaining to the field of journalism is pejoratively ascribed to as crony journalism. Such has been the impact of cronyism that it not only threatens to radically change the traditional nature and ideals of journalism but also re-structure the working mechanism of the media houses which increasingly find themselves at the mercy of people with vested interests whose primary interest remains in anything but journalism. Such people consider the media to be either a profit-making endeavour or a power-sustaining tool. No wonder then, the Gandhian ideal of service being the sole aim of journalism has been shown the door to exploit the potential of the media to maximise the scope of individual goal-attainment. Such an approach has visibly resulted in the lack of faith among the masses pertaining to the functioning of the media. This certainly does not augur well for the future of the media as it is the media that exists for the people and not the other way round. Keeping the above concerns in mind, this seminar is a humble effort towards bringing to light the issues concerning crony journalism in today’s context and the possible ways of countering them. An entire session will also be devoted exclusively to the role of the social media in today’s scenario as the mainstream media finds it increasingly hard to shake off the effects of cronyism and the social media remains the only medium that may still be ascribed as an institution ‘of the people, by the people and for the people’. Thus, we keenly look forward to thoughtful endeavours by academicians, scholars and media professionals alike that are likely to contribute towards formulating a possible roadmap for approaching and addressing the concerns of crony journalism bearing in mind the causes, effects and solutions pertaining to the same in today’s perspective. We welcome submissions on the following thrust areas pertaining to the concerns of cronyism in today’s scenario: *1. **Meritocracy vs. Cronyism: The Media Dilemma* *2. **Cronyism- Redefining News Values* *3. **Favouritism in Media Practices and Ethical Concerns *** *4. **Media: The New-Age Political Tool*** *5. **Editorial Freedom and its Challenges Today*** *6. **Social Media: Checking or Promoting Cronyism*** *Call for Papers**:*** Interested participants are requested to submit their abstracts by 26thNovember, 2013 at cronyjournalism.cjmc(a)gmail.com / cjmcvb(a)gmail.com. CFP: CCA 2014/Technology and Emerging Media
by Guillaume Latzko-Toth 20 Nov '13

20 Nov '13

(version française plus bas) * CCA 2014 Annual meeting: Call for papers - Technology and Emerging Media * We invite you to submit a proposal (individual paper, panel or roundtable) to the Technology and Emerging Media (TEM) track within the next Canadian Communication Association conference that will take place on May 28-30, 2014 at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario. All participants in the TEM track will have the opportunity to submit a paper based on their presentation, for inclusion in the "TEM Proceedings" that are published online on the sections¹ website: <http://tem.fl.ulaval.ca>. Detailed guidelines will be e-mailed later on to TEM participants. The "Technology and Emerging Media" track covers works addressing a wide range of communication and media-related issues, with a focus on technology and technological innovation. Particularly relevant to the track are proposals addressing the following topics: - Information and communication technologies, notably from the points of view of their design, diffusion, and uses; - Digital media and related social phenomena; - Issues related to recent technological developments in the field of communication: social media/social Web, mobile media, online games, and new diffusion platforms for traditional media. A panel proposal (typically a set of 3 or 4 papers) should contain the list of papers (in desired order), including the author(s) and title for each individual paper, as well as the designated panel chair. Double panels can also be considered if justified by the number of papers. Please note that in addition to the panel proposal, each paper included in the panel must also be submitted individually by its first author. We are glad to announce that the Technology and Emerging Media section was formally established this year as an official CCA interest group. Social Science Research Tools for Human Coders - Recommendations?
by Amar Ashar 19 Nov '13

19 Nov '13

Hi All- I'm writing on behalf of the Media Cloud <http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/research/mediacloud> team at the Berkman Center with a request for research help: does anyone know of existing tools/interfaces that work well for coding URLs? Specifically, we're looking for existing tools that automatically serve up a URL to 1+ human coders, ask 1+ questions of them (including branches), record the answer(s), and then seamlessly serve up the next URL in the set. We've looked at a few different survey and text analysis tools, from Qualtrics to various commercial and open-source platforms, but haven't found one that has this specific function. If anyone knows of anything out there it might be useful for us to look at, including free software we could remix for this purpose, or other recommendations, I'd be grateful. Thanks! Social Media Internship at Microsoft Research New England, Summer 2014
by Nancy Baym 19 Nov '13

19 Nov '13

* APPLICATION DEADLINE: JANUARY 31, 2014 * Microsoft Research New England (MSRNE) is looking for PhD interns to join the Social Media Collective for Summer 2014. We are looking primarily for social science/humanities PhD students (including communication, sociology, anthropology, media studies, information studies, science and technology studies, etc.). The Social Media Collective is a collection of scholars at MSRNE who focus on socio-technical questions. We are not an applied program; rather, we work on critical research questions that are important to the future of understanding technology through a social scientific/humanistic lens. MSRNE internships are 12-week paid internships in Cambridge, Massachusetts. PhD interns are expected to be on-site for the duration of their internship. Primary mentors for this year will be Nancy Baym and Kate Crawford. PhD interns at MSRNE are expected to devise and execute a research project during their internships. The expected outcome of an internship at MSRNE is a publishable scholarly paper for an academic journal or conference of the intern's choosing. The goal of the internship is to help the intern advance their own career; interns are strongly encouraged to work towards a publication outcome that will help them on the academic job market. Interns are also expected to collaborate on projects or papers with full-time researchers and visitors, give short presentations, and contribute to the life of the community. While this is not an applied program, MSRNE encourages interdisciplinary collaboration with computer scientists, economists, and mathematicians. We are looking for applicants to focus their proposals on one of the following eights areas: 1) The ethics and politics of big data, algorithms, and computational culture 2) Entertainment and news industries and audiences 3) Affective, immaterial, and other frameworks for understanding digital labor 4) Critical accounts of urban informatics and crisis communication 5) Personal relationships and digital media Applicants should have advanced to candidacy in their PhD program by the time they start their internship (unfortunately, there are no opportunities for Master's students or early PhD students at this time.) Interns will benefit most from this opportunity if there are natural opportunities for collaboration with other researchers or visitors currently working at MSRNE. Applicants from universities outside of the United States are welcome to apply. PEOPLE AT MSRNE SOCIAL MEDIA COLLECTIVE The Social Media Collective is comprised of researchers, postdocs, and visitors. This includes: - Principal Researcher Nancy Baym (http://www.nancybaym.com/) - Principal Researcher danah boyd (http://www.danah.org<http://www.danah.org/>) - Principal Researcher Kate Crawford (http://www.katecrawford.net/) - Senior Researcher Mary L. Gray (http://marylgray.org/) - Postdoctoral Researcher Megan Finn (http://meganfinn.org/) - Postdoctoral Researcher Jessa Lingel (http://jessalingel.tumblr.com/) Previous interns in the collective have included Amelia Abreu (UWashington, information), Jed Brubaker (UC-Irvine, informatics), Jade Davis (University of North Carolina, Communication), Scott Golder (Cornell, sociology), Germaine Halegoua (U. Wisconsin, communications), Tero Karppi (University of Turku, Media Studies), Airi Lampinen (HIIT, information), Jessica Lingel (Rutgers, library and information science), Joshua McVeigh-Schultz (Interactive Media, University of Southern California), Alice Marwick (NYU, media culture communication), Jolie Matthews (Stanford, Learning Sciences), Laura Noren (NYU, sociology), Jaroslav Svelch (Charles University, media studies), Shawn Walker (UWashington, information), Omar Wasow (Harvard, African-American studies), and Sarita Yardi (GeorgiaTech, HCI). For more information about the Social Media Collective, visit our blog: http://socialmediacollective.org/ APPLICATION PROCESS To apply for a PhD internship with the social media collective: 1. Fill out the online application form: https://research.microsoft.com/apps/tools/jobs/intern.aspx Make sure to indicate that you prefer Microsoft Research New England and "social media" or "social computing." You will need to list two recommenders through this form. Make sure your recommenders respond to the request for letters so that their letters are also submitted by the deadline. You will need to include: a. A brief description of your dissertation project. b. An academic article you have written (published or unpublished) that shows your writing skills. c. A copy of your CV. d. A pointer to your website or other online presence (if available). e. A short description of 1-2 projects that you propose to do while an intern at MSRNE, independently and/or in collaboration with current SMC researchers. This project must be distinct from the research for your dissertation. This is important - we really want to know what it is you want to work on with us. We will begin considering internship applications on Feb 1 and will not consider late applications. PREVIOUS INTERN TESTIMONIALS "The internship at Microsoft Research was all of the things I wanted it to be - personally productive, intellectually rich, quiet enough to focus, noisy enough to avoid complete hermit-like cave dwelling behavior, and full of opportunities to begin ongoing professional relationships with other scholars who I might not have run into elsewhere." - Laura Noren, Sociology, New York University "If I could design my own graduate school experience, it would feel a lot like my summer at Microsoft Research. I had the chance to undertake a project that I'd wanted to do for a long time, surrounded by really supportive and engaging thinkers who could provide guidance on things to read and concepts to consider, but who could also provoke interesting questions on the ethics of ethnographic work or the complexities of building an identity as a social sciences researcher. Overall, it was a terrific experience for me as a researcher as well as a thinker." - Jessica Lingel, Library and Information Science, Rutgers University "Spending the summer as an intern at MSR was an extremely rewarding learning experience. Having the opportunity to develop and work on your own projects as well as collaborate and workshop ideas with prestigious and extremely talented researchers was invaluable. It was amazing how all of the members of the Social Media Collective came together to create this motivating environment that was open, supportive, and collaborative. Being able to observe how renowned researchers streamline ideas, develop projects, conduct research, and manage the writing process was a uniquely helpful experience - and not only being able to observe and ask questions, but to contribute to some of these stages was amazing and unexpected." - Germaine Halegoua, Communication Arts, University of Wisconsin-Madison "Not only was I able to work with so many smart people, but the thoughtfulness and care they took when they engaged with my research can't be stressed enough. The ability to truly listen to someone is so important. You have these researchers doing multiple, fascinating projects, but they still make time to help out interns in whatever way they can. I always felt I had everyone's attention when I spoke about my project or other issues I had, and everyone was always willing to discuss any questions I had, or even if I just wanted clarification on a comment someone had made at an earlier point. Another favorite aspect of mine was learning about other interns' projects and connecting with people outside my discipline." -Jade Davis, University of North Carolina, Communication
