Book Announcement: Going Viral
by Karine Nahon 26 Nov '13

26 Nov '13

Hi AoIR-ists, * I apologize in advance for the self-promoting email* Our first book 'Going Viral' has just been published by Polity. The book is an interdisciplinary look (relying heavily on social science) of virality as a process. The book discusses how to identify information that goes viral, what makes something go viral, and the impact virality has on individuals and society. Virality is a consequence of dialogues and tensions among many forces. The main tension occurs between emergent sharing patterns of users (usually constituted through bottom-up processes) and the control mechanisms exerted on information flows (usually driven by top-down processes, e.g. network gatekeeping and social and network structures). We discuss these tensions in the book. The book also discusses virality as a mechanism that reproduces social norms, but at the same time a mechanism that challenges institutions and their structure. Viral events may play a role in events that destabilize traditional institutions not only by spreading information, but also by bringing people together who share common concerns or grievances. Since virality spreads quickly and is resistant to control, it may have the power to circumvent the regulatory power of the prevailing social structure. AoIR has been one of my main intellectual homes, and if you happen to read the book, I would love to hear what you think. by Hilary Culbertson 25 Nov '13

25 Nov '13

Hemispheric Pathways: Critical Makers in International Networks April 24-27, 2014 Ministerio de Cultura, Lima, Peru Submissions Deadline: 5:00 p.m. EST, November 30, 2013 The challenges facing the Western hemisphere are multidimensional and complex. Urban agglomeration, economic development, ecological crisis, military conflict, digital privacy, impediments to advanced learning, negotiations of multiple cultural and historical perspectives—these are problems with scientific and human factors that must be considered together. HASTAC 2014 challenges participants to consider the interplay of science, technology, the social sciences, the humanities, and the arts in the context of addressing the urgent contingencies facing the evolving hemisphere. Themes addressed by the conference include: – humanities research and hemispheric grand challenges – indigenous culture and technology – technology and education–open learning, peer learning, and issues of access, equity for primary and/or higher education – technology and interhemispheric communication of knowledge and publishing – Heritage, Patrimony, Memory and the Digital – new publics, movements going global and communities of the future – technology and social identity and roles: gender, race, and other identities – digital animation and other visualization media arts and sciences – games and gaming, including for learning – community development including the importance of art and culture districts – Mobile technologies and everyday life – Improvisation, tinkering, hacking HASTAC 2014 will be composed of keynote addresses, paper presentations (variations detailed below), hackathons, workshops, birds of a feather meet ups, as well as performances and tech demos. We will accept proposals for participant presentations in the following categories: 5-8 minute lightning talks; 15-20 minute talks; curated panels (lightning talks, longer talks, curated conversation); project demos; digital and/or print posters; creative performances; hackathons; birds of a feather sessions; post conference workshops (April 28th). Submission portal will be open soon, with support for proposals written in Spanish and English. We are now accepting proposals for participant presentations in the following categories: 5-8 Minute Lightning Talks We seek focused, inspiring talks that can serve as both provocation and an introduction to your work in progress or your wider interests. We require: 1) complete contact information including valid phone, e-mail, and institutional affiliation, if any; 2) brief (200-250 word) bio; 3) a half-page abstract of the work you would like to present that must discuss its relationship to the conference themes; 4) any technical requirements or other support that may be required for your presentation. 15-20 Minute Talks We also seek more traditional papers that really require more time to develop a sustained argument than a lightning talk would allow. Please let us know in your submission if you would allow us to simultaneously consider your presentation submission for a lightning talk instead of a full talk. We require: 1) complete contact information including valid phone, e-mail, and institutional affiliation, if any; 2) brief (200-250 word) bio; 3) a one-page abstract of the work you would like to present that must discuss its relationship to the conference themes; 4) any technical requirements or other support that may be required for your presentation. Curated Panels If you would like to curate a panel of 3-5 lightning talks, a traditional panel of 3 papers or a structured conversation among key thinkers, we require: 1) complete contact information including valid phone, e-mail, and institutional affiliation, if any, for all participants; 2) brief (200-250 word) bio for all participants; 3) a one-page abstract of the panel’s theme that must discuss its relationship to the larger conference themes, clearly identifying how each panelist will contribute; 4) identification of the panel/group organizer who will be required to facilitate the panel/group involvement; 5) any technical requirements or other support that may be required for the presentation. Project Demos Designed to showcase well-developed digital projects or tools. Demos will be grouped in a single room and will, ideally, remain up for an entire conference day. You will have a dedicated 2 hour slot to engage with conference participants without competing with other events. You will have wireless access and a table. While we endeavor to provide projectors or other equipment for participants who make a request at the time of submission, presenters will be responsible for bringing all required technology with them. We require: 1) complete contact information including valid phone, e-mail, and institutional affiliation, if any; 2) brief (200-250 word) bio; 3) a half-page abstract of the work you would like to present and a link to a project url with images or video documentation; 4) any technical requirements or other support (including any space requirements beyond a table) that may be required for the presentation. Please indicate any equipment that is absolutely required and that you cannot bring with you. In the event that we cannot guarantee access to the equipment, we regret that we may not be able to accept your demo. Digital and/or Print Posters Print posters (4 x 3’) and electronic posters (to be projected) are solicited for emerging projects, ideas, and scholars. In presenting your research with a poster, you should aim to use the poster as a means for generating active discussion of your research. Limit the text to about one-fourth of the poster space, and use visuals (graphs, photographs, schematics, maps, etc.) to tell your story. Required: 1) complete contact information including valid phone, e-mail, and institutional affiliation; 2) brief (200-250 word) bio; 3) a half-page abstract of your work that must discuss its relationship to the conference themes; 4) statement clearly identifying whether your poster will be hard-copy or digitally projected; 5) a digital draft of your poster. Creative Performances We are soliciting creative interventions too – e-lit readings, ARGs and mobile cinema, talks that cross boundaries between the academic and the poetic, tech wearables, etc. We see these as being integrated into conference sessions (i.e. if you have a five-minute piece, we might schedule it as a lighting talk), as potentially being part of scheduled evening entertainment (a 30-minute interactive dance performance or e-poetry reading), or as taking place outside of/alongside scheduled time (ie a mobile game that conference participants can download). 1) complete contact information including valid phone, e-mail, and institutional affiliation, if any; 2) brief (200-250 word) bio; 3) a one-page abstract of the work you would like to present that clearly identifies the genre you are working in and how, ideally, you would like it to be scheduled during the conference (including time and space requirements). Your abstract must discuss its relationship to the conference theme; 4) any technical requirements or other support (including any space requirements). Please indicate any equipment that is absolutely required and that you cannot bring with you. In the event that we cannot guarantee access to the equipment, we regret that may not be able to accept your creative submission. Maker Space We are soliciting proposals for individuals or groups to create an informal maker space, where conference participants can share, exchange, and experiment with new online tools, personal fabrication technologies, open source electronics such as Arduino, and other creative and learning devices and gadgets. To submit your candidature, we require: 1) complete contact information including valid phone, e-mail, and institutional affiliation, if any; 2) brief (200-250 word) bio; 3) a half-page abstract of the technology, software or gadget you would like to present. Your abstract should also discuss its relationship to the conference themes; Birds of a Feather Sessions Birds of a Feather Sessions will be conversations among experts and those interested in similar topics or technologies. Sessions will aim to assemble teams and plans for multi-institutional collaborations that will extend well beyond the duration of the conference. In order to submit a theme for a session, we require: 1) complete contact information including valid phone, e-mail, and institutional affiliation, if any; 2) brief (200-250 word) bio; 3) a half-page abstract of the theme or technology you would like to discuss along its relationship to the conference theme. Your abstract should also indicate the outcomes you would like to see from this group session. Post-conference Hackathons Post-Conference Hackathons will be sessions led by developers that will aim to stitch the varying expertise of participants into a day-long work session to develop a resource such as a website, database, application, or interactive visualization. All are welcome to participate. Full-day time slots only. Post-conference Workshops Post-Conference Workshops will take place on April 28th, 2014. Full-day or half-day workshops will be considered. If you have new tools, new approaches or seek a new community of collaborators we can provide an opportunity for you to offer full and half workshops. For consideration we require: 1) complete contact information including valid phone, e-mail, and institutional affiliation, if any; 2) brief (200-250 word) bio; 3) a one- or two-page abstract of the workshop that clearly describes the goals of the workshop, its relationship to the conference theme; its target audience (and any specialized background required for participation) and whether the proposal is for a full day or half-day workshop; 4) a brief explanation of the space and technical resources required to run the workshop. All proposals will be reviewed, but we regret that we cannot provide reviewer feedback. We welcome applications from scholars at all stages of their careers from all disciplines and fields, from private sector companies and public sector organizations, from artists and public intellectuals, and from networks and individuals. CFP Deadline Reminder: 1984: Freedom and Censorship in the Media – Where Are We Now?
by Mark Mckenna 25 Nov '13

25 Nov '13

Apologies for cross posting. This is a reminder that the deadline for the submission of abstracts for the conference is Saturday 30th November. Please find all information below. *1984:Freedom and Censorship in the Media – Where Are We Now? <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1J88rmGLVg&feature=youtu.be>* A conference to be hosted at the Centre for Research in Media and Cultural Studies at the University of Sunderland on the 8th and 9th of April 2014. *Confirmed keynote speakers:* Professor Martin Barker, University of East Anglia Jerry Barnett, Sex and Censorship Professor Julian Petley, Brunel University Professor Clarissa Smith, University of Sunderland Worries over effects of media content and technologies are never far from the headlines. When anxieties centre on protecting children and the fortification of the social fabric, regulation often seems like the first resort. The year 2014 will see the thirtieth anniversary of the 1984 Video Recordings Act (VRA): this event offers the opportunity to reflect on how and why concerns about individual media technologies and particular media genres become so important that campaigners and politicians can claim that ‘the very soul of the nation’ is at stake. Using the VRA as a starting point, this conference aims to critically examine the key issues in politics and campaigning which shape calls for censorship. If new technologies always spark old anxieties around ‘effects’ and propensities to cause ‘harm’, what might we learn from extant legislation and their implementation? As we settle into the internet age and media on demand, policing national media borders seems ever more futile, yet the clamour for legislation to protect children and society shows no signs of abating. We invite submissions that explore issues relating to censorship which may be specific to the history, implementation and legacies of the Video Recordings Act but we also welcome papers which examine media regulation/censorship in their broader cultural contexts, which are national and international in focus and which draw connections between contemporaneous issues and their historical antecedents. Suggested topics: § Censorship § Evolving practices and technologies of media classification and/or censorship § ‘Problematic’ media cultures § Regulation of representations of sex, gender and sexualities § Digital and online censorship § Oppositional voices § Protecting and questioning national borders § Campaigns and campaigners § Activism/activists and the political arena § International narratives of censorship § British regulation in a global context § National and international regulation/censorship § Documentary and avant-garde § Controversies around computer games § History of contemporary film censorship/classification § Audiences and the social experiences of censorship § Censorship and the creation of communities of dissent § Regulations and government policy Proposals for individual papers or pre-constituted panels are welcomed. The submission deadline is 1st December 2013 and notifications of acceptance will be made by 6th January 2014. Proposals should include title, abstract (350 words), 3-5 key bibliographical references, along with the name of the presenter, institutional affiliation and biographical information (100 words). Panel organizers are asked to submit panel proposals including a panel title, a short description of the panel and information on all the papers following the guidelines listed above. Panels may consist of three speakers with a maximum of 20 minutes speaking time each. All submissions, expressions of interest and enquiries should be sent to: admin(a)where-are-we-now.co.uk Kind Regards, Mark McKenna and Alessandra Mondin Centre for Research in Media and Cultural Studies University of Sunderland http://www.where-are-we-now.co.uk http://www.crmcs.sunderland.ac.uk/

Call for iConference Workshop Participants
by Nadine Kozak 24 Nov '13

24 Nov '13

Hello AoIR members, My colleague and I have organized a workshop about the Social Studies of Information at the iConference (it is all day on March 4) and we are interested in finding additional participants for roundtables and other activities. The workshop theme and rationale follow. If you are interested in participating, please contact me offlist at kozakn(a)uwm.edu at your earliest convenience. Exploring the Social Studies of Information Organizers: • Thomas Haigh, University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee. thaigh(a)computer.org • Nadine Kozak, University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee. kozakn(a)uwm.edu Why Did I Never Hear About “Social Studies of Information” Before? This full day workshop builds a new community of scholars interested in exploring the potential of the “Social Studies of Information” (SSI) as a meta-identity for information research informed by the humanities and social sciences. We are inspired by the broad field of STS (for either “Science and Technology Studies” or “Science, Technology, and Society”). Calling this the “Social Studies of Information” acknowledges the shared object of study around which iSchools are built. STS-influenced work within iSchools has been balkanized across a range of functional classifications and disciplinary identities, sometimes seen as marginal or esoteric. This includes much work in areas such as information policy, information ethics or philosophy of information, values in design, software studies, socio-technical systems, archival studies, information organization information systems, Kittlerian media studies, information history, community informatics, internet studies, and social informatics. SSI embraces the full range of information-related work, cultures, practices, and institutions rather than being focused exclusively on the use of information technology identities. We are not seeking to supplant the existing identities held by these scholars, but rather to create opportunities for them to discover common ground. So What Actually Happens At the Workshop? We are structuring the workshop to maximize interactivity and involve as many people as possible. Most of the time will be spent either on roundtable discussions, interactive sessions allowing participants to introduce their own ideas and research to the community, or breakout groups gathered round tables to discuss particular topics of interest and report them back to the larger group. We will also be encouraging participants to join informal lunch and dinner groups, and using social media and old fashioned email to keep the community together before, during, and after the workshop. Who Will Be There? We are making an effort to recruit lively, articulate and intellectually versatile scholars from the full range of fields covered by SSI to participate in roundtable sessions and serve as breakout session moderators. Our current provisional program includes: • Caroline Haythornthwaite, University of British Columbia, • Jenna Hartel, University of Toronto • William Aspray, University of Texas at Austin • David Ribes, Georgetown University • Kimberly Anderson, University of Wisconsin--Milwaukee • Howard White, Drexel University • Lai Mai, University College Dublin • Josh Greenberg, Sloan Foundation • Kalpana Shankar, University College, Dublin Isn’t All This Rather Vague? Yes. However we will constantly be updating our workshop program at www.socialstudiesof.info/workshop14. So look there instead. Do You At Least Have Some Goals and Outcomes Naturally. • Discover others with common interests and start to situate own topics and approaches within the broader context of SSI. • Lay the groundwork for further community building, and support ongoing initiatives based around the web domain socialstudiesof.info, including a discussion listserv, syllabus repository and membership directory. • Develop a suitable organizational structure to develop this online hub further and to enlist volunteers able to extend its presence into social media. • Build ties between related initiatives including SSI, the digitalSTS initiative, and the Consortium for the Science of Sociotechnical Systems. Re: [Air-L] Reminder: EJCS special issue on Data Mining / Analytics CfP deadline 9th December
by Helen Kennedy 24 Nov '13

24 Nov '13

Apologies for mistakenly attaching a document to this reminder - please ignore it. Helen ________________________________________ From: Helen Kennedy Sent: Sunday, November 24, 2013 8:50 PM To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org Subject: Reminder: EJCS special issue on Data Mining / Analytics CfP deadline 9th December Reminder: The European Journal of Cultural Studies special issue on Data Mining / Analytics CfP deadline 9th December Editors: Mark Andrejevic, University of Queensland, Australia; Alison Hearn, University of Western Ontario, Canada; Helen Kennedy, University of Leeds, UK. The widespread use of social media has given rise to new forms of monitoring, mining and aggregation strategies designed to monetize the huge volumes of data such usage produces. Social media monitoring and analysis industries, experts and consultancies have emerged offering a broad range of social media intelligence and reputation management services. Such services typically involve a range of analytical methods (sentiment analysis, opinion mining, social network analysis, machine learning, natural language processing), often offered in black-boxed proprietary form, in order to gain insights into public opinion, mood, networks and relationships and identify potential word-of-mouth influencers. Ostensibly, these various forms of data mining, analytics and machine learning also are paving the way for the development of a more intelligent or ‘semantic’ Web 3.0, offering a more ‘productive and intuitive’ user experience. As commercial and non-commercial organisations alike seek to monitor, influence, manage and direct social media conversations, and as global usage of social media expands, questions surface that challenge celebratory accounts of the democratizing, participatory possibilities of social media. Remembering that Web 2.0 was always intended as a business manifesto – O’Reilly’s early maxims included, after all, ‘data is the next Intel inside’, ‘users add value’ and ‘collaboration as data collection’ – we need to interrogate social media not only as communication tools, but also as techno-economic constructs with important implications for the management of populations and the formation of subjects. Data mining and analytics are about much more than targeted advertising: they envision new strategies for forecasting, targeting, and decision making in a growing range of social realms (employment, education, health care, policing, urban planning, epidemiology, etc.) with the potential to usher in new, unaccountable, and opaque forms of discrimination, sorting, inclusion and exclusion. As Web 3.0 and the ‘big data’ it generates moves inexorably toward predictive analytics and the overt technocratic management of human sociality, urgent questions arise about how such data are gathered, constructed and sold, to what ends they are deployed, who gets access to them, and how their analysis is regulated (boyd and Crawford 2012). This special issue aims to bring together scholars who interrogate social media intelligence work undertaken in the name of big data, big business and big government. It aims to draw together empirically-grounded and theoretically-informed analyses of the key issues in contemporary forms of data mining and analytics from across disparate fields and methodologies. . Contributions are invited that address a range of related issues. Areas for consideration could include, but are not limited to: • Political economy of social media platforms • Algorithmic culture • User perspectives on data mining • The politics of data visualisation • Big data and the cultural industries • Data journalism • The social life of big data methods • Inequalities and exclusions in data mining • Affective prediction and control • Data mining and new subjectivities • Ethics, regulation and data mining • Conceptualising big/data/mining • Social media intelligence at work • Social media and surveillance • Critical histories of data mining, sorting, and surveillance. Prospective contributors should email an abstract of 500-700 words to the issue editors by 9th December 2013 (to h.kennedy(a)leeds.ac.uk<mailto:h.kennedy@leeds.ac.uk>). Full articles should be submitted to Helen Kennedy (h.kennedy(a)leeds.ac.uk<mailto:h.kennedy@leeds.ac.uk>) by 12th May 2014. Manuscripts must be no longer than 7,000 words. Articles should meet with The European Journal of Cultural Studies’ aim to promote empirically based, theoretically informed cultural studies; essayist discussion papers are not normally accepted by this journal. All articles will be refereed: invitation to submit a paper to the special issue in no way guarantees that the paper will be published; this is dependent on the review process. Details • Abstract deadline: 9th December 2013 (to h.kennedy(a)leeds.ac.uk) • Decisions on abstracts communicated by 13th January 2014; • Article submission deadline: 12th May 2014 (to h.kennedy(a)leeds.ac.uk) • Final submission/review process complete: 13th October 2014; • For publication in 2015.

Digital Divide, Civic Engagement Stats for the UK??, U.S. E-Gov state rankings by income?
by Steven Clift 24 Nov '13

24 Nov '13

I am hosting an event in London on Dec 2 - http://uknewvoices.eventbrite.com - where I will be featuring U.S. stats from the Pew study on digital civic engagement. My inclusion focus: http://bit.ly/pewcivic Also note: http://blog.e-democracy.org/posts/2108 I am looking for any similar survey results from the UK or any other country for that matter. Any suggestions? Also, on a related note, I am looking for any analysis comparing US states in terms of lower income and by race use of e-government in general based on the July 2011 ACS survey. What states are reaching lower income residents the best with e-government services? Which states with the highest levels of Internet use are doing the best or worst with lower income access? Once we can see which ones are essentially reaching more people beyond what is driven by simply having more lower income people online, we can start to explore why and how states can increase lower income use of e-government (and open government). My ultimate goal is to build awareness around raising new and more representative voices online - http://e-democracy.org/newvoices See: http://thedataweb.rm.census.gov/ftp/cps_ftp.html#cpssupps http://www.census.gov/prod/techdoc/cps/cpsjul11.pdf http://www.census.gov/prod/2013pubs/p20-569.pdf http://www.ntia.doc.gov/report/2013/exploring-digital-nation-americas-emerg… The main question of interest: HUPRIM6 Do you use the Internet to access government services, forms, or information? (Include tax forms.) Please cc: clift(a)e-democracy.org with your reply. Thanks, Steven Clift

Apologies for any duplications! This is a reminder that 300-400 word abstracts for the special issue of The Information Society, Connecting Fields: Information, Learning Sciences and Education, are due on 12/15. Abstracts should outline the prospective article and emphasize how it will highlight the bi-directional nature of the special issue theme. Please include 3-6 keywords as well. Please send all submissions, questions, and correspondence to Dr. June Ahn at juneahn(a)umd.edu. Include “TIS Special Issue” in the subject title of your email. ********************* Call for Papers The Information Society Connecting Fields: Information, Learning Sciences and Education (http://www.indiana.edu/~tisj/connecting_fields.pdf) Deadline for extended abstracts: December 15, 2013 Selection notification: January 15, 2013 Final submissions: May 1, 2014 The ways in which people interact with information is evolving rapidly. For example, modern questions about life, love, and where to eat for dinner are negotiated over platforms such as Yelp or Instagram, and well established information environments such as Wikipedia, Twitter, and Reddit are being reconsidered as sites for situated learning. We are fast moving away from clearly demarcated technologies and arenas for information sharing or learning, and instead, evolving toward blended realms of public, peer-oriented interaction made possible by new social norms and technological affordances. This blurring of boundaries affords an opportune moment to consider the connections between information and education, or the information sciences and learning sciences. We need to build bridges between fields, institutions, communities and practices. This blending and merging represents an analytical opportunity to decipher trends, institutionalized assumptions and norms, and conspicuous omissions. We are soliciting abstracts that exemplify this bi-directional perspective, and bring together scholars from multiple fields interested in aspects of information, learning, and education. We welcome both empirical or conceptual works that: (1) critically integrate a lens from information science if the research is grounded in the learning sciences or education, or (2) rigorously incorporate a learning or educational lens if grounded in information science or related fields. We hope that this special issue will be a foundational touchstone through which scholars across information science, learning sciences, and other cognate fields can build a new discourse. We encourage contributions that come from a wide range of perspectives, including (but not limited to): The role of information behavior in learning processes with digital and participatory media The role of information or education institutions, organizations, and networks in facilitating new forms of learning and credentialing Applications of information science, computation, and learning analytics to create new models for continuous feedback, information driven instructional practice, and personalized learning Applications of human-centered design to support and develop new modalities for learning such as games for learning, simulations, mobile and embodied/tangible computing Crowds and online communities (e.g., citizen science, Twittersphere) as Communities of Practice The role of hacker/maker spaces and libraries within the evolving learning ecosystem The role of technology in enabling new institutional logics within education (i.e., massively open online courses (MOOCs), Institute of Play’s Quest Schools in New York and Chicago, and Peer2Peer University) The relationship between information and education policy Any other topics that can be a touchstone for scholars at the intersection of information, learning, and education Guest Editors: June Ahn, PhD Assistant Professor College of Information Studies College of Education University of Maryland, College Park juneahn(a)umd.edu Ingrid Erickson, PhD Assistant Professor Department of Library and Information Science School of Communication & Information Rutgers University ingrid.erickson(a)rutgers.edu Submission Details: Interested authors should submit a 300-400 word abstract with 3-6 keywords by December 15, 2013. Abstracts must address how the paper will highlight the bi-directional nature of the special issue theme. All submissions will be reviewed by the guest editors, and authors will be notified of their selection by January 15, 2014. Selected authors will be invited to submit a full paper for the special issue and will receive feedback to help craft final submissions, which will be due May 1, 2014. All papers will undergo TIS’ standard peer review process. The publication date of the special issue, expected in late 2014, will be determined in concert with TIS editors.
