IR14 and the political situation

Hello fellow aoir-heads - especially you located in the US. In 10 days, we'll meet up in Denver, and I really look forward to IR14. However, could you please tell if there is anything in the present political situation that I as a foreigner ought to prepare for? Do I for example need to bring loads of cash or do I run the "risk" of being stuck? (I actually like that prospect better than most!) I'm not really alarmed - on the other hand, it's very hard to follow (not to say understand) the details in the administrative shut down. IR14 extra sightseeing

Does anyone have plans they want to share about extra sightseeing in Denver, so may be we could go as a group(s)? I know there are some game researchers planning some gaming clubs visits or I hear about that on Twitter. I am getting around on the public transit and spent an hour online last night on the RTD web site and Google Earth planning the buses to all the scheduled events from my hotel etc.. I would love to get out to something like Red Rocks park and also check out museums and the parks in the city. The science and tech museum is in one large park. I did not though book any extra days (Tuesday-Sunday) perhaps I can do one museum the night of arrival Tuesday. The planned events sound good so I am not sure I would want to miss those.

International Communication Association (ICA) Conference 2014 Seattle, Washington 22-26 May 2014 *CFP: Navigating a Networked Death panel * >From online memorials to crowdfunding funeral costs, the particular sociocultural and technological protocols of social network sites (SNS) undeniably impact experiences of death and mourning. SNS have become major loci for coping with loss and memorializing loved ones. People can simultaneously augment existing funerary practices and create new practices that take advantage of the unique affordances of SNS. As networked and collaborative forms of mourning extend into our online experiences, SNS may become a way of intensifying existing social networks, fomenting new bonds, even while collaborating on, contesting, or negotiating the memory of the deceased. While recent works have analyzed the specific modes of interaction on Facebook walls or MySpace memorials, we seek to better understand the relationships between these online interactions and on-the-ground relationships either affected or created by these exchanges. As the novelty of SNS responses to death fades, we must take a closer look at how these post-mortem social networking practices have become incorporated into everyday life. We are most interested in the relationship between the network of grievers and an individual who has died, and how the deceased becomes a particularly dense node in a constellation of relationships. In this panel, we seek to bring together diverse perspectives on a topic that will affect everyone. As a universal aspect of life, death provides a lens through which to examine networked social bonds. The presentations in this panel will discuss the ways in which we might conceptualize links between online mourning practices and the embodied relationships they reflect, influence, and produce. Potential papers may explore the use of social media to plan memorial services, to collectively cope with loss, or the interactions between different members of an individual’s social circle on SNS and in face-to-face meetings. Especially pertinent are themes related to mourning, grief, memorialization, subjectivity, privacy, authority, collaboration, and affect. PRism Special Issue CFP: 'Fandom, Brands and Public Relations', Amber Hutchins and Natalie Tindall, prfandom(a)gmail.com Traditional public relations methods of communicating with target publics have changed. The idea of engaged publics or audiences has arisen in multiple fields, including audience studies, media studies, sport culture, participatory culture, marketing, cultural studies, and public relations. The conceptions of the public in previous models are no longer valid across all campaigns. With the advent of social media, content producers and audiences can be one and the same. Fans have more ownership on a global scale, without the limitations of physical proximity, yet our current conceptions of public do not delineate between active and super-active publics, let alone discuss engagement with information beyond processing and seeking it or dealing with publics virtually who are highly motivated to communicate with organizations and brands. Also, in public relations, there is a huge shift to community managers. Yet, there is not a lot of knowledge about the publics who are interacting within the community; this is a place where this special issue can provide significant insight. Fandom and participatory culture have been identified, discussed, and lamented over in these areas and in various global contexts, and these conversations are synonymous and parallel with the ideas outlined in the segmentation strategies and the robust research on the situational theory of publics. However, little conversation between those areas has occurred. For example, online community management of fans and critics is a relatively new method practitioners use to engage stakeholders and public. Although there has been some work on offline community management (or brand communities), primarily in fields outside of public relations, there is not much available for online communities. The work that has been done has been focused on marketing or cultural studies. If you look at our leading public relations and strategic communication journals, research on fans is rare, and the attempt to connect fandom research to segmentation and other public relations theory is nonexistent. The goal of this project is to bring scholarly attention to the disciplines' interaction, engagement, and interaction with fans who are publics. *camra*, a media pedagogy lab, at UPenn's Graduate School of Education & Annenberg School of Communication is holding it's 2nd Annual Screening Scholarship Media Festival (#SSMF2014) and are still accepting submissions. *camra* seeks to push the boundaries of research and media, developing new ways of knowing through audiovisual forms of expression and create an aesthetic sensibility that destabilizes previously held notions of what differentiates art from scholarship. Thus, the festival asks participants to consider the following questions: - *What are the possibilities that advances in media offer for knowledge production? * - *What are the methods and strategies that media makers and academics share in their work?* - * What are the ways in which academics can and should integrate rigorous media production in their research?* Last year we had a range of submissions from artists, filmmakers, scholars, educators, designers and more. The Institute of Network Cultures presents: MoneyLab--Coining Alternatives Over the past few years, while the economic downturn endures and budget cuts prevail, we have witnessed the emergence and rise of alternative payment systems and revenue models in digital media. Online bartering sites, a plethora of crowdfunding platforms, new forms of valuation, e-wallets and crypto-currencies like Bitcoin, are but a few examples. These coincide with the huge growth of mobile money transfer services across Asia and Africa and the general convergence of digital and financial industries. Is this where a healthy economic future lies? Do these economic ventures testify to a paradigm shift from a market-based economy towards a network economy? What are the possibilities, pitfalls and issues at hand? Will these experiments gain wider ‘over the counter’ usage, effectively becoming mainstream? Beyond Hayekian notions of ‘currency competition’, what theories and concepts can help us engage with these developments? MoneyLab: Coining Alternatives aims to critically explore, map and probe the politics, inner-workings and governance of these alternative digital economic forms.It is not enough to merely promote and further develop (technical) alternatives, we also need time to ask ourselves critical questions and re-examine the very underpinnings of our endeavors. Our 1998 conference on ³Culture, Technology, and Communication² (CATaC) was among the first devoted to the roles of culturally-variable norms, practices, and communicative preferences in the designs, implementations, and responses to (networked) information and communication technologies. While certainly successful in academic terms (including publications and conference ranking by the Australian Research Council as among the top 20% of conferences in these domains), what became a biennial series has also been marked as a critical but collegial conference culture that provides a unique oasis for participants who share often radically interdisciplinary interests. (AoIR-ists will feel right at home!) Much has changed, of course, since 1998 - including the "mainstreaming" of our signature focus on culture as inextricably interwoven with ICTs. Accordingly, CaTaC'14 will be a transformational conference - one that will explore new, robustly interdisciplinary ways of attending to the intersections of culture, technology, and communication in critical but cordial fashion. We aim to both celebrate the people and accomplishments of the past conference series, and to transform the conference series through development of new research, directions and approaches. We invite both participation in the opening Doctoral Colloquium and paper and panel submissions that address the intersections between culture, technology, and communication with a focus on either Design/Production or Practice (see descriptions below). Doctoral Colloquium: PhD students will present and collaboratively discuss their current work, and enjoy advice and mentoring from senior faculty across the disciplines represented at CaTaC¹14 including informatics and design, communication and media studies, among others (Monday morning, June 16, 8.30-12.00). Conference tracks. We invite research, reflection, and scholarship that specifically address one or more of our defining elements of culture, technology, and communication while simultaneously exploring the interrelationship(s) between these. More particularly, we invite submissions that do so through focusing on either Design/Production or Practice. Design/Production For this track, we invite individual papers and panels that look at how technical, cultural and communication affordances and constraints intersect in the production of technology, messages and theory construction.
