CfP tripleC special issue "Interrogating internships" (ed. Nicole Cohen, Greig de Peuter, Enda Brophy)
by Christian Fuchs 12 Nov '13

12 Nov '13

http://www.triple-c.at/index.php/tripleC/announcement/view/17 Call for Papers: Special issue of tripleC: Communication, Capitalism & Critique Interrogating Internships Edited by Nicole S. Cohen (University of Toronto Mississauga), Greig de Peuter (Wilfrid Laurier University), Enda Brophy (Simon Fraser University) When publisher Condé Nast cancelled its internship program in October 2013, the response was mixed: many cheered the end of a program that asked debt-laden youth to labour for free, while others lamented the closure of one of the only routes into media work. When depicted in the mainstream media, internships are surrounded by an aura of glamour: rapper Kanye West did a stint at luxury designer Fendi, Lady Gaga arranged one at designer Philip Treacy, and Hollywood portrayed the phenomenon in the movie The Internship. The gloss is fading, however: digital electronics manufacturer Foxconn was caught employing student interns on dubious terms on its assembly lines; former interns launched a successful class-action suit against Fox Searchlight Pictures; and Ross Perlin’s Intern Nation: How to Earn Nothing and Learn Little in the Brave New Economy (Verso, 2011) was vital in pushing internships into a critical spotlight internationally. Within just a few years, internships have become a high-profile subject, garnering media attention, catalyzing activism, provoking government action, and sparking lawsuits against massive corporations. Although internships are prevalent in communication, cultural, media, and entertainment industries, scholarly literature on internships from communication and cultural studies remains limited. This special issue of tripleC seeks to situate internships within the labour turn in research in communication studies and beyond. The issue will interrogate some of the multiple articulations between and among internships, capitalism, communication, and culture. Employers in the media and cultural sectors are regularly singled out as playing a key role in perpetuating the normalization and intensification of unpaid or low paid intern labour, illuminating the interplay of glamourous occupations, the reserve army of labour, and discount wages. For many young people, internships provide an initial encounter with and formative experience of the capitalist labour market, yet the relationship between internships and the category of exploitation is not necessarily straightforward. And many youth are shut out of internships altogether, highlighting the way class divisions structure entry into communication and cultural industries. Internships are also an emerging trope in popular media culture, with television shows ranging from Girls to Gallery Girls pointing to the gendered dimension of internships. And, if internships are in the international spotlight today, it is thanks to growing intern labour activism and the way interns and their allies have turned their communicative capacities to alternative ends, raising awareness through DIY video-making, engaging in creative online protest and campaigns, and effectively naming-and-shaming intern employers via social media. Internships are an entry point for interrogating contested conditions of life and labour in communicative capitalism at a time when precarity is an overarching structure of feeling. So, we invite articles, reports, interviews, and pieces that develop key concepts from academics, activists, and interns (current and former) on issues including but not limited to: * the political-economic context of the spread of (unpaid) internships * the relationship of internships to student debt and youth unemployment * social exclusion based on class, race, and gender and intersectional analysis of the social relations of internships; * the production of meaning, e.g., discourse analysis of media coverage of intern issues, everyday talk of internships (‘paying your dues,’ ‘getting a foot in the door’); * representations of internships in popular media culture; * government regulation, policy proposals, legal issues, and class-action law suits; * ‘passionate labour,’ governmentality, self-exploitation, working for exposure, network sociality, and reputational economies; * case studies of internships within and/or across particular sectors of the arts, media, and cultural industries (e.g., journalism, fashion, film); * historical perspectives on internships in the communication and cultural industries; * intern activism within and beyond the union movement; strategies, tactics, and organizing models; * critical and contextualized biographical accounts of internship experiences; * the role of education institutions in the intern economy; * genealogy of the term ‘intern’; * elite internships and access; * theoretical key concepts for interrogating internships, such as exploitation, youth, and intersectionality, etc. Length: * Peer-reviewed academic articles: 5,000-8,000 words not including references * Interviews, reports from organizations, non-academic articles: 1,000-2,500 words not including references * Key concept entries: 1,000-2,000 words not including references Publishing Schedule: Jan. 15, 2014: deadline for proposals (300-500 word abstract) Feb. 1, 2014: notification of acceptance (scholarly articles still subject to peer review) June 1, 2014: deadline for first drafts Aug. 1, 2014: editorial feedback provided Oct. 1, 2014: final drafts submitted Nov. 1, 2014: publication of special issue Please send queries and abstract proposals (including title, abstract of around 300-500 words, affiliation, contact data, brief biographical note) via email to the 3 co-editors: Nicole S. For this task, articles should employ critical theories and/or empirical research inspired by critical theories and/or philosophy and ethics guided by critical thinking as well as relate the analysis to power structures and inequalities of capitalism, especially forms of stratification such as class, racist and other ideologies and capitalist patriarchy. The journal is especially interested in how analyses relate to normative, political and critical dimensions and how they help illuminating conditions that foster or hinder the advancement of an inclusive, just and participatory information society. It publishes both theoretical and empirical contributions as well as reflections and book reviews. Follow tripleC on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CommCapCritique

Presidential Records on ICTs
by John Paul Laprise 12 Nov '13

12 Nov '13

Hi everyone, Sharon Traweek's recent post on the SIGCIS listserv about declassification and US government records has prompted me to make a general announcement. I've mentioned this to some of you in conference conversations or you probably are aware of this if you've run across my work but I'd like to make a general announcement for all: For the past eleven years (six years as a grad student and going on five years as a faculty member), I have been pursuing ongoing research on White House information technology policy. To that end, I have been filing regular and persistent requests at Presidential Libraries (Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush (present)) for documents related to a very wide range of ICT keywords. The keyword list is a living list informed by research. In some cases, these records are available but not yet opened and my filing has the effect of fast tracking their availability. In some cases I've filed numerous Freedom of Information Act requests and subsequent appeals to open closed record sets. With classified documents I've filed mandatory review requests and subsequent appeals to declassify records. This takes time and persistence. The end result is that in excess of 200k pages of documents are opened that were not previously available on request. This work continues as the Bush Library comes online and I have made the initial requests to open records there. The long and short of this is that there is a very rich documentary record open and available to interested scholars. Best regards, John Laprise, Ph.D. Assistant Professor of Communication in Residence Northwestern University in Qatar Northwestern University -----Original Message----- From: members-bounces(a)sigcis.org [mailto:members-bounces@sigcis.org] On Behalf Of Sharon Traweek Sent: Tuesday, November 12, 2013 3:40 AM To: members(a)sigcis.org Subject: [SIGCIS-Members] de/classification of US government archives re sci/technology Hi, I would appreciate references to any scholarly studies focused specifically on the opening of US cold war government archives of classified [secret] research in the sciences and engineering fields. I have searched for a review article on this topic, including the changing US government strategies for de/classification, but have not found one. That is, I am looking for research on the history of the de/classification process at US government archives 1945 to the present and public access to such materials concerning science and technology. I am aware of passages on this topic distributed in various histories of particular cold war sciences and technologies and in some histories and legal studies of the US Freedom of Information Act of 1966 and the relevant Presidential Executive Orders [12958/13292/13526] on this topic issued since 1995. new research positions at the Oxford Internet Institute
by Mark Graham 11 Nov '13

11 Nov '13

Dear Colleagues, We have two new jobs available at the Oxford Internet Institute. Please pass these links along to suitable candidates or relevant lists. One is a 36 month post for a <http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/people/newpositions/#p38> researcher <http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/people/newpositions/#p38> with a quantitative background. This researcher will be mapping and measuring knowledge economies in Sub-Saharan Africa. The other is a 30 month post for a <http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/people/newpositions/#p37>researcher<http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/people/newpositions/#p37> that has experience using qualitative methods (they will be studying microwork and virtual labour in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia). Full details of both positions are below. Please also feel free to get in touch with any questions about the jobs. *Researcher - Grade 7: Salary £29,541 - £36,298 p.a.* We are looking for a full-time Researcher to work with Dr Mark Graham on an ERC-funded project which focuses on how new economic practices and processes are taking root in Sub-Saharan Africa as a result of changing connectivities. We plan to map formal and informal types of participation in ‘knowledge economies’ in order to investigate why certain places have sustained their dominance, why others have become more central, and why some places, practices, and initiatives have declined. To do this we are seeking a researcher with experience in quantitative social research. The researcher will work on three stages of the project. First, collecting and bringing together all necessary data. While some of the data are readily available in existing and open datasets, others require the creation of custom scripts and data collection tools. Second, using GIS and statistical packages to comprehensively analyse the data. We plan to employ both inferential models and descriptive graphics and maps. Finally, broadly disseminating this work in a variety of open and accessible formats including a data-sharing tool, an interactive website, open reports, and peer-reviewed academic journal articles. The work will also be used as a base for detailed qualitative research performed by two other members of the research team. The successful applicant will demonstrate an ability to carry out social and spatial statistical analysis, visualise results, write for both public and academic audiences, and work with an interdisciplinary team. We also welcome applications from candidates who are additionally eager to design a future research programme in order to extend the position. Based at the Oxford Internet Institute, this position is available from 1st March 2014 for 36 months in the first instance, with the possibility of renewal thereafter funding permitting. Only applications received before 12:00 midday on 9th January, 2014 can be considered. Interviews for those short-listed are currently planned to take place in the week commencing 27thJanuary 2014. To apply for this role and for further details, including a job description, please click on the link below: https://www.recruit.ox.ac.uk/pls/hrisliverecruit/erq_jobspec_version_4.jobs… *Grade 7: Salary £29,541 - £36,298 p.a.* The Oxford Internet Institute is a leading centre for research into individual, collective and institutional behaviour on the Internet. We are looking for a full-time Researcher to work with Dr Mark Graham and Dr Vili Lehdonvirta on the IDRC-funded project *Microwork and Virtual Production Networks in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia*. Combining archival research, surveys, and interviews, this ambitious project will critically assess the impact of Internet and mobile connectivities on social and economic development, particularly insofar as they open up opportunities for novel forms of online work, such as ‘e-lancing’, ‘microwork’, and ‘game labour’. In this exciting role, the Researcher will carry out a total of approximately six months of fieldwork among virtual workers and organizations in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia, as well as working at OII’s premises in Oxford. The Researcher will also contribute to the dissemination of the findings through peer-reviewed academic papers, project reports, events, blogs and social media. Candidates should have experience of social science research in Development Studies, Geography, Sociology, Social Anthropology, Communications, Organization Studies, Management or related disciplines, training and practical experience in qualitative research methods. Based primarily at the Oxford Internet Institute (with periods of fieldwork), this position is available immediately for 2.5 years in the first instance, with the possibility of renewal thereafter, funding permitting. For qualified candidates, there may also be opportunities to teach course modules on our ‘Social Science of the Internet’ MSc course. Only online applications received before 12:00 midday on 13 December 2013 can be considered. Interviews for those short-listed are planned to take place on 16 January 2014. CFP: Feminist Privilege and Activism Online
by Laura Portwood-Stacer 11 Nov '13

11 Nov '13

*please forward widely!* FEMINIST MEDIA STUDIES Commentary and Criticism Call for Papers Issue 14.3 Feminist Activism and Privilege Online Online spaces have proven to be fertile ground for the growth of explicitly feminist activism and communities, with the emergence of many popular blogs, apps, and social media campaigns devoted to raising feminist consciousness and encouraging feminist action. Yet feminism continues to struggle with issues of privilege in online spaces. Questions linger as to whether online feminist activism is accessible by and inclusive of working-class and poor women, women of color, queer and trans women, differently-abled women, women in developing countries, and individuals who do not identify as women. Meanwhile, in other online spaces, including activist ones, feminist perspectives are frequently silenced, often with threats of violence. Given this, we seek papers that explore questions of access and inclusion in online feminist activism, and/or a discussion of feminist perspectives in online activism more broadly. We encourage the submission of papers that go beyond mere description to offer productive critique and shed light on examples of online campaigns and communities that are inclusive of feminists from marginalized groups, especially examples that cross national boundaries. Papers by feminist activists working outside of academic spaces are also particularly welcome. Topics could include, but are not limited to: • Strategies for generating access by and inclusion of diverse participants in online activism • “Trolling,” verbal violence, and policing in online activist spaces • Persistence of “the gender gap” and/or gendered privilege in digital activist movements • Issues in building online networks for transnational feminist activism • Critical reflections on experiences with feminist activism and privilege online • Reviews of books or events relevant to the theme The Commentary and Criticism section of Feminist Media Studies aims to publish brief, timely responses to current issues in media culture, for an international readership. Submissions may pose a provocation, describe work in progress, or propose areas for future study. The editors of Commentary and Criticism will also consider book and event reviews, as well as contributions that depart from traditional academic formats. We encourage all submissions to strategically mobilize critique to also offer a productive contribution to both feminist politics and media studies. Submissions must go beyond mere description in order to be considered for publication in Commentary and Criticism. Potential contributors can write to co-editors, Susan Berridge ( seberridge(a)yahoo.co.uk) and Laura Portwood-Stacer (lportwoodstacer(a)gmail.com) to express preliminary interest. Final essays of between 1500-2000 words are due by February 1, 2014. Email submissions directly to both Susan Berridge and Laura Portwood-Stacer (submissions for Commentary and Criticism will not be correctly processed if submitted through the main Feminist Media Studies site). Please be sure to follow the Feminist Media Studies style guide, which can be found at the following link: http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/journal.asp?issn=1468-0777&linktype=44. by Elinor Carmi 11 Nov '13

11 Nov '13

Hi AOIR's, This is the last reminder to the Radical Media Forum's 2nd symposium - Re-Configuring the Immune System<http://radmediaforum.wordpress.com/the-immune-system/>: Bodies, Words and Worlds that will take place this Thursday, 14th of November, at Goldsmiths College, University of London, RHB Cinema, 17:00-21:00! This event attempts to open up new pathways of critical engagement at the intersections of sciences, technology and humanities by taking the immune system as the bridging entity, concept, and tool. Our aim is to create a transitory platform, in the form of a panel of discussions, in which the biological body, with its associated discourses and practices of immunity, can coalesce with the digital, artistic, and industrial bodies in order to enable a mediated insight of ‘bodies-words-worlds’ within the topic of the immune system. Invited Speakers: Professor Lucy Suchman<http://www.lancaster.ac.uk/fass/sociology/profiles/lucy-suchman> (Lancaster University, UK): Figuring the Other within the Military-Entertainment System. Professor Margit Schildrick<http://www.tema.liu.se/tema-g/medarbetare/shildrick-margrit?l=en> (Linkoping University, Sweden): Chimerism and the Immune System: Demythologising Self/Other Distinctions. Dr. Alex McLean<http://yaxu.org/> (Leeds University, UK): Live Coding: Stepping into Software. Mr. Amir Carmi<http://il.linkedin.com/pub/amir-carmi/15/6ba/619> (Comsecure LTD, Israel): Malware: Accelerated Evolution. You can read all the abstracts here: http://radmediaforum.wordpress.com/the-immune-system/ After each event we will send an open call for our on-line platform where we will curate alternative forms of academic knowledge production. This means we invite scholars to contribute a very wide range of ways of critiquing through images, clips, comics, sound etc. The Radical Media Forum also has Facebook<https://www.facebook.com/RadicalMediaForum> and Twitter accounts: @RMF_Goldsmiths. This event is organised by Andrea Nunez Casal and Elinor Carmi. Please feel free to contact us if you have questions or comments: e.carmi@gold.ac.uk/eu901ac@gold.ac.uk. CFP for Connexions Special Issue: Education and Training for Globally Distributed Virtual Teams
by connexions journal 11 Nov '13

11 Nov '13

Dear Colleagues— We cordially invite you to submit a proposal for a special issue of the journal *Connexions *entitled *Education and Training for Globally Distributed Virtual Teams*. This special issue will feature articles that respond to the following question: “How can we better prepare people to work successfully in international, online contexts?” We are interested in research articles, review articles, focused commentaries, industry perspectives, and teaching cases. Submit proposals to connexionsspecialissue(a)gmail.com on or before 15 January 2014. We have included the text of the Call in this email. To receive a PDF, please respond with your request to this email. If you have any questions, please contact me atbrewer_pe(a)mercer.edu or Kirk St.Amant at stamantk(a)ecu.edu. We would be happy to chat with you. Best, Pam Brewer, Guest Editor Kirk St.Amant, Guest Editor connexions Call for Proposals EDUCATION AND TRAINING FOR GLOBALLY DISTRIBUTED VIRTUAL TEAMS Preparing the workforce of the future Special Issue Guest editors *Pam Estes Brewer* *Mercer University *(email: brewer_pe(a)mercer.edu) *Kirk St.Amant* *East Carolina University *(email: stamantk(a)ecu.edu) Today, information and communication technologies (ICTs) allow individuals located in different nations to collaborate almost as easily as if they were located in the same physical office. As a result, *globally distributed virtual teams *now support the work of organizations across the spectrum of products and services. Such teams are used by a range of for-profit and non-profit organizations including businesses, government organizations, military, and educational institutions. These organizations are increasingly employing individuals located in different nations to engage in various types of collaborative work via ICTs. As a result of such factors, much of the *modern workforce *is now migrating toward a virtual model of work, and forces associated with globalization are changing the nature of competitiveness in the new economy. *Individuals*, in turn, must often adapt rapidly to virtual environments and do so with little or no formal preparation in the types of professional communication practices essential to success in such contexts. As a result, individuals working in internationally distributed teams must generally learn from their mistakes, an effective but often costly approach. Moreover, individuals must also often adapt to working in an environment in which they are regularly paired with new colleagues and clients from different nations, cultures, and language groups. Thus, the modern distributed workplace requires employees to account for and address three central factors—*technology, culture, and language*—in order to succeed in most work-related tasks. An all-important question arising from this situation is, *“How can we better prepare these individuals for this international, online context?”* A 2012 *IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication *special issue on global training reveals, however, that very little information on training—particularly global virtual communication training—has been published in the major professional communication journals in the last ten years. Such a gap needs to be closed if educators and trainers alike wish to prepare adult learners to be successful participants in current (and future) business practices and processes. This special issue on education and training for globally distributed virtual teams seeks to address this topic through *articles on how best to prepare individuals to succeed in this new workplace*. In particular, the editors are interested in articles that answer questions such as: • What types of education and training are most desired by managers and participants of global virtual teams? • How can organizations best prepare virtual team members for working across boundaries of language? What issues affect translation and terminology? What do team members most need to know about World Englishes, English as a Second Language, or English for Specific Purposes? • How can organizations better prepare employees to collaborate and cooperate online and across cultural boundaries? • How can social media be used to prepare individuals for working in intercultural online contexts? • What legal issues can affect or should be included in global virtual team training? What should participants in global virtual teams know about proprietary information and privacy? In addition, the editors of this special issue welcome articles such as: • Industry commentaries (refer to “types of articles” below). • Critical analyses of the many published task/technology models that support global virtual teams. • Critical analyses of virtual team studies in areas such as technical training, adult education, human resources development, educational technology, human performance technology, technical communication, and user experience design. The guest editors are also interested in discussing other prospective topics with potential contributors. Types of articles *connexions *publishes four types of articles: • Original research articles of 5,000 to 7,000 words in length • Review articles of 3,000 to 5,000 words in length • Focused commentary and industry perspectives articles of 500 to 3,000 words in length • Teaching cases of 3,000 to 5,000 words in length Submission Guidelines Interested individuals should send a 150-200 word proposal to connexionsspecialissue(a)gmail.com Proposals should be sent as a .docx, .doc, or .rtf file attached to an email message with the subject line: “Proposal for Special Issue on Globally Distributed Virtual Teams.” All proposals should include the submitter’s name, affiliation, and email address as well as a working title for the proposed article. Production Schedule The schedule for the special issue is as follows: • 15 Jan. 2014 –Proposals due • 15 Feb. 2014 – Decisions on proposals sent to proposal submitters • 15 June 2014 – Manuscripts due • 15 Aug. 2014 – Reviewer comments to authors • 15 Oct. 2014 – Final manuscripts due to editors • Dec. 2014 – Publication of special issue Contact Information Completed proposals or questions about either proposal topics or this special issue should be sent to Pam Estes Brewer and Kirk St.Amant at connexionsspecialissue(a)gmail.com
