Case Studies in Strategic Communication (ISSN 2167-1974) is an online, peer-reviewed, open access journal dedicated to the study of strategic communication through the case study form. There are no fees to read or publish in CSSC. CSSC accepts and publishes case study submissions on a rolling basis in annual volumes. Case studies illustrate the strategies, tactics, and execution of communication campaigns through in-depth coverage of a single situation. CSSC welcomes cases covering a range of topics and industries in the domains of public relations, advertising, marketing, and social media. Cases published in CSSC to date have addressed the way a Major League Baseball team integrated social media in its stadium; how the CDC incorporated YouTube videos during the 2009 H1N1 flu epidemic; how a community service project strengthened internal communication for a college sports team; and other topics. CSSC does not publish traditional scholarly research papers. Rather, the focus of the journal is to publish case studies suitable for use in teaching and learning contexts, similar to the form and use of Harvard Business School cases and the cases of the Arthur W. Funded Ph.D. positions at UT Austin available for study of Information Work

We invite applications for two fully funded PhD positions, starting in August 2014, available for incoming doctoral students to join our study of information work in the Information Work Research Group, School of Information, University of Texas at Austin [1]. Applications are due November 15, 2013 (see below). The faculty and students in the IWRG undertake empirical and analytical studies of information workers in their workplaces, exploring how work and occupations are changing. We draw primarily on ethnography, participant observation, interviews, historical analysis and archival analysis to explore occupations such as records managers, remote financial professions, digital humanists, data analysts, open source software developers and online community managers. Both positions provide full tuition, a stipend of $20,000 and research travel support for two years. As Ph.D. students in the School of Information you would be eligible for continued funding through incoming grants, teaching assistantships and instructor positions; successful students should expect full-time support through the completion of their PhD. Austin is home to SXSW Interactive and a rapidly growing technology sector, and is an energetic, young city that is a great place to live and work through your Ph.D., offering excellent employment and education opportunities for spouses and families. We welcome inquiries from students interested in pursuing academic careers, coming from diverse academic and social backgrounds. Applicants with professional work experience are particularly encouraged to apply, as are students currently completing their masters or undergraduate degrees. Alternative Computation and Unconventional Spaces Monica Stephens, Humboldt State University Josef Eckert, University of Washington Newly emergent features of the computational turn (e.g., Berry 2011) posit new challenges for geographers practicing computer-mediated research. While geographers maintain a strong relationship with geographic information systems, new technologies, hardware, and practices suggest exciting new avenues for computational research. Geographic “big data” demand new, computationally intensive approaches to geospatial analysis. Textual artifacts from social media sources augment traditional geospatial inquiry, but also serve as data for non-GIS computational work such as natural language processing, topic modeling, or social media analysis. These provocative treatments suggest ways in which information can be geographic, yet not necessarily require explicit Cartesian expression. Results of such analyses have determined uneven distributions of data, and limits to the representational abilities of GIS. We’re excited to push beyond traditional GIS techniques to explore other ways in which our digital beings are expressed through space and place. This session welcomes both empirical and theoretical work that advances computer-mediated research in novel ways. We welcome papers on the following topics (or any closely related): 1) Digital humanities-inspired inquiry for Geography 2) Alternative methodologies for the digitally underrepresented 3) Novel geospatial and other computer-mediated approaches to “big data” analyses 4) Non-Cartesian geographic information and its analyses 5) Computer-mediated research located in underrepresented spaces (rural areas, impoverished places, etc.) 6) Geographic natural language processing, topic modeling, or other textual analysis 7) Relational spaces of Social Network Analysis Please send related abstracts to Joe Eckert (jeckert1(a)uw.edu) and Monica Stephens (monica.stephens(a)humboldt.edu) no later than October 31, 2013.
