Hello, My colleague Ylva and I are hoping to organize a panel at IR14 in Denver http://ir14.aoir.org on the use of social media for coping with grieving and bereavement. If you are interested in participating please send us your short paper. In order to put together the panel application we need your submission by 1 March, please email your work to us. We will then put together the panel and submit everything to the final deadline by 14 March. Here are the instructions SHORT PAPERS (individual or multi-author) – Minimum 1000 words, 1200 word maximum not including bibliography. Please note the deadline for this MLA special session is March 1st. -- Radical Ecologies: (Re)Grounding Digital Pedagogy A Special Session proposal for the 2014 MLA Convention This special session seeks dynamic workshop-style presentations to engage participants in new ecologies of learning and leading edge ideas that connect ecological and educational systems. The session aims to explore the idea that technology and ecology need not be mutually exclusive and that they can play an essential role in the humanities classroom. Drawing on points of intersection between experiential liberal arts education, digital humanities, biomimicry, sustainability, and ecopsychology, ‘Radical Ecologies’ will engage instructors and administrators in course development strategies and in helping students plan their own learning by using a systems approach to curriculum design. This session is proposed to be an interactive and engaging series of workshops that enable participants to (1) take away tangible first steps to implementing ecologically-based digital course and curriculum design and (2) recognize the opportunities for learners at all levels in thinking experientially and ecologically about curriculum design. Questions might include: How can ecological thinking provide a model for a more intentional and dynamic liberal arts pedagogy? Can digital technologies help us develop more ecologically focused learning environments and curricula? How can teachers integrate ecological thinking into new and existing courses, units, and overall curriculum design? Is there a role for ecological thinking in developing humanities curricula? How can ecological concepts (re)shape digitally-inflected pedagogy? Thank you, and we hope to see you in May! - Morgan, Damien, Mark, and the rest of the GSST conference committee ---------------------------------------------- Governing Technology: Material Politics and Hybrid Agencies *Thursday, May 9 and Friday, May 10**, 2013* *Stanford Humanities Center* *http://governing.morganya.org * This conference aims to bring together two communities of scholars: those examining the ways that states and other institutions have sought to govern technologies, and those examining the ways that technologies have influenced the practice and form of governing. In the process, we will revisit the concept of governance through the lens of *material politics*. As some technologies promise the world and others threaten to overrun it, scholars in the humanities and social sciences have turned a critical eye to the agentive power and material effects of technology, as well as the responses that this power invokes. Research on technology’s entanglements with states, transnational organizations, and other powerful institutions has often taken its cues from science and technology studies. In particular, pioneering work in STS on materiality, on governmentality, and on hybrid and nonhuman agency has become more and more a part of mainstream work in history, geography, anthropology, communication, literary studies, sociology, and beyond. Scholars from across these fields have, in turn, developed new frameworks of analysis that go beyond classic conceptions of governmentality and materiality to incorporate their own disciplinary strengths.
