Dear Air-listers, As the deadline approaches for this year's Oxford Internet Institute Summer Doctoral Programme (SDP), I'd be very grateful if you could forward this e-mail to any PhD students who may want to apply. The OII SDP brings together PhD students from around the world for a fortnight of study with leading academics in the field. The programme is structured around daily lectures, seminars and social events, aimed at developing student thinking on a range of issues central to the Internet and improving their thesis research. This year's programme will be held at the iSchool at the University of Toronto from 8th-19th July. Participating tutors include faculty from several of the great universities nearby (Barry Wellman, Seamus Ross, Leslie Regan Shade, Rhonda McEwen, Anabel Quan-Haase, Jason Nolan, Ron Deibert and others) as well as faculty from OII (Bernie Hogan, Eric Meyer and Vicki Nash). We also hope to bring back SDP alumni for a day of networking and presentations on the 12th July. The deadline for applications is 25th February. Hi James Conflict in groups can be conceptualized in organizational terms (they distinguish between task, process, etc forms of conflict), in anthropological terms (the group constituting itself against a monstrous "other"). In online communities it can be a way to enforce discipline, reinforce cohesion, indoctrinate newcomers etc. I deal with these issues in my book Cyberchiefs. For organization science perspectives on conflict in distributed teams see the work of people like Pamela Hinds, Karen Jehn, Elizabeth Mannix. For an Internet-specific take see Franco et al. "Anatomy of a flame" and for work that focuses on communication see Lange "What is your claim to flame" and O'Sullivan and Flanagin "Reconceptualising flaming". There are probably many others. Literature on online conflict

Hi all, I wonder if anyone could help. I’m looking for literature that deals with online conflict at a theoretical level. For my doctorate I’m undertaking a digital ethnography of some teacher related online social spaces and conflict appears to be very important for the communities I’ve been participating in, mainly in two ways: firstly in meaning making arguments which develop users’ understandings of their subjects and themselves as professionals (eg arguments about the purpose of their subject, the purpose of teaching etc); and secondly, in arguments in which a majority unifies against a minority to emphasize a particular dominant discourse (eg you have to be a particular kind of person to be a good teacher). In both of these situations conflict seems to be particularly important in relation to the construction and performance of users’ professional identities. I’m trying to develop my thinking on what’s going on here, so am looking for literature that deals with online conflict particularly at a theoretical level. The event will combine presentations and workshops, giving participants hands on experience of new techniques for working with digital data and space for discussion about the methodological, conceptual and disciplinary challenges these emerging techniques and practices are generating. Ways of understanding and analysing digital data and digitally mediated environments are varied and complex. The skills required are increasingly specialised and do not necessarily conform to any particular theoretical or epistemological perspective. At the same time, an expanding set of broadly applicable concepts, techniques and methods are emerging that can be used across, and tailored to, the needs of multiple disciplines in the Humanities. Examples include data visualisation techniques, text and data mining, and network analysis, and theories and concepts around the socio-cultural, socio-political and cognitive processes that affect the use and interpretation of digital data and digitally mediated environments. Key symposium themes to be explored therefore include: - Key concepts and theories that inform the study of digital data and digitally mediated environments. - The wider socio-political, philosophical and cultural concepts/issues surrounding these. - Methodological approaches to the study of digital data and digitally mediated environments. - Particular techniques and tools that can be used to study, analyse, and represent digital data and digitally mediated environments. Locating passive consumers on social network sites

Hi everyone, I’m doing a project that focuses on how people consume and respond to political content on a Twitter-like social network site. I was planning to target both active people who are highly interested in these contents, showing by posting comments (I actually found this group of people via reading the comments they posted on) or re-sending them; and passive consumers, who basically only read these contents. The problem is, it is hard to reach these passive population on a social network site. Does anyone have tips on locating these people or any literature about this question? Many thanks. From its single shard server to the developer's "sandbox" approach to game design, this particular MMOG has become the site of various research activities situated across several academic disciplines. This workshop aims to bring together the multidisciplinary community of scholars currently conducting research on or within EVE Online to share their work and foster new research collaborations. We invite proposals about all stages of research (works-in-progress to completed studies). Interested researchers not currently researching EVE are also welcome to attend. Pointers for Undergraduate degrees in Digital Cultures

Dear All, We are right now trying to conceptualise what an undergraduate degree programme in Digital Cultures could look like. We have been trawling the web but largely we come across graduate programmes that offer it as a degree, and I was wondering if anybody has pointers on where to look and what to keep in mind while trying to conceptualise a degree programme like this. Links to programmes that you think are successful, or just reminders about disciplines/stakes that need to be factored in to build a Bachelor's programme that brings in Historical Review + Critical philosophy + Media Studies + Social Science & Humanities Critique + Computing and Management skills, with a global perspective would be greatly appreciated. If you are already running courses in this field, also, do get in touch because we are thinking of a distributed course creation, and would also be able to commission existing experts from around the world to help us do the design in the coming year or two.
