Department of Media, Culture, and Communication Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development New York University Clinical Assistant Professor, Non-Tenure-Track The Department of Media, Culture, and Communication in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development at New York University invites applications for a Clinical Assistant Professor specializing in digital-software literacy. The appointment, which will begin September 1, 2013, is a one-year, teaching-intensive non-tenure-track appointment that is renewable upon review. We are seeking applicants for a clinical assistant professor to teach courses and lead initiatives in digital-software literacy primarily for undergraduates with some involvement in the MA program. This position will be key to fostering departmental initiatives in digital-software-coding literacy for our large number of undergraduate majors, and designing courses that integrate theory and technical skills. The Department of Media, Culture, and Communication serves over 750 undergraduate majors and offers MA and Ph.D. programs of study. NEW BOOK ANNOUNCEMENT The Donald McGannon Communication Research Center at Fordham University is pleased to announce the publication of the second volume in the Center’s Everett C. Parker Book Series: Rethinking Media Pluralism by Kari Karppinen (Fordham University Press, 2013). This provocative new book argues that media pluralism needs to be rescued from its depoliticized uses and re-imagined more broadly as a normative value that refers to the distribution of communicative power in the public sphere. In Rethinking Media Pluralism, Kari Karppinen contends that the notions of media pluralism and diversity have been reduced to empty catchphrases or conflated with consumer choice and market competition. He suggests that in this narrow logic, key questions about social and political values, democracy, and citizenship are left unexamined. To solve this difficult issue, the author argues that media pluralism should be understood, instead, in terms of its ability to challenge inequalities and create a more democratic public sphere. This book will be valuable to scholars, students, activists, and media policy makers. According to The Institute for Information Law’s Natali Helberger, “uncertainty or disagreement over how to conceptualize media pluralism is a persistent stumbling block in academic and policy debates. Tackling this difficult issue is an important, brave and necessary exercise, and it is what this book does.” Kari Karppinen is a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Social Research at the University of Helsinki, Finland. His research interests include media and communication policy, media and democracy, political philosophy, and theories of the public sphere. He is currently working on a research project titled “Facing The Coordinating Challenge: Problems, Policies, and Politics in Media and Communication Regulation,” which is funded by the Academy of Finland. The Donald McGannon Communication Research Center conducts, supports, rewards, and disseminates research that informs the communications policymaking process and ethical decision-making in the management of media organizations. The McGannon Center seeks to contribute to the development of a tradition of rigorous research into media performance and media policy, with a particular emphasis on the interaction between the economic and the public service dimensions of media performance. Please excuse this query, but i'm looking for work on the sociology of computer modelling. i can find masses of stuff on doing sociology with computers, but almost nothing on the social dynamics of the modeeling process. Given that modelling depends on negotiated guesses, simplifications, broad summaries and so on, it is clearly a social process, and i would have thought there must be masses of stuff. i have only found Paul Edwards 'A Vast Machine' and i'm not quite sure it is what i want.... Colleagues, Just to remind to those who are interested that the deadline for submissions of Abstracts for the Workshop below is coming up. Call for Paper Proposals "Theory of Broadband: Regulation, Networks and Applications" A by-invitation Experts' Workshop to be held at The Columbia Institute for Tele-Information, Columbia University New York, NY, May 30-June 1, 2013 As broadband becomes the dominant technology over which all media and telecommunications services are delivered, the traditional differences between content and conduit, mass media and interpersonal communications, and mobile and fixed uses made of technology are blurred. This has been observed and discussed for a while but theoretical dimensions on how technology changes regulatory, societal and economic structures have lagged. As we are moving to an entirely new generation of media, new academic approaches are needed to guide networks, users, content providers, and policy makers, This calls for analysis and new conceptual and methodological models. The Institute for Information Policy at Penn State University (IIP), and the Columbia Institute for Tele-Information (CITI) are pleased to announce this call for paper proposals in which "Theory of Broadband: Regulation, Networks and Applications" serves as the main theme. Authors of selected papers will be invited to present them during a two day by-invitation workshop designed to bring together up to a dozen experts and to be held at Columbia University in New York, NY. This Workshop is one of a series of events on "Making Policy Research Accessible," organized by the IIP, with the support of the Ford Foundation and the Media Democracy Fund. Presenters at the workshop will be invited to submit their completed papers for review by the Journal of Information Policy ( <http://www.jip-online.org/> www.jip-online.org) We seek papers that focus on the next generation of issues.
