Call for Papers: 'mining' Edited by Dean Laplonge and Axel Bruns It's hard to escape the practices of mining. In some ways, we have become obsessed with mining. Mining occupies discussions about the economy, the environment, the labour market, politics and land rights. Our airports are packed full with high-vis people flying to and from mine sites. We seem to view mining as a limitless pit of gold which we can explore/exploit for personal financial gain and to secure research funding. And it's as if there are no limits to what we are willing to mine. The literal interpretation of 'mining' is the extraction of something from the ground. But in addition to such mining of physical resources, the exploitation of information at large scale - known as data mining - is also turning into a burgeoning industry, generating new intellectual and economic opportunities while raising complex ethical concerns. In all its forms, 'mining' therefore is easily associated with engineering, geology, mathematics, economics, sociology, and other scientific practices. But where are the cultural analyses of 'mining'? Where are the articles that engage critically and cleverly with the business and stories of mining? If we consider 'mining' through the lens of gender or ethnicity, through queer studies, poststructuralism or feminism, through the media or critical accounts of academic intervention, what do we come up with? Are there ways of viewing mining that are not tied to the 'hard' sciences? What different views of mining emerge when we view it through a more comprehensive, multidisciplinary lens? The business of mining is not just a matter of extracting minerals from the ground which we can then use for their intended purpose. Data mining is also not just an extraction of 'big data' that uncovers some hidden, absolute truths waiting to be found. The ways we choose to analyse mining result in the way we view this business. This issue of M/C Journal will focus on the differing interpretations and application of 'mining'. Specifically, we hope to re-envision mining as a cultural practice which can be read in multiple ways. We therefore invite authors to offer some innovative interpretations of how mining works, and to explore and expand on the cultures of mining. We encourage authors to speak outside the dominant narrative of mining as a process of extraction of the real and to explore how mining can be viewed otherwise. Areas for consideration include: * the workplace cultures of mine site workplaces and the behaviours of miners * reinterpretations of the history of mining * reinterpretations of the practice of mining as a site of economic development or environmental damage * critiques of emerging practices in data mining * explorations of the data mining industry as it establishes itself * analyses of the relationship between mining and community, environment and people * feminist approaches to mining * gender, sex and sexuality-and their relationship to mining * mining and ownership, privacy, security Prospective contributors should email an abstract of 100-250 words and a brief biography to the issue editors. Abstracts should include the article title and should describe your research question, approach, and argument. Biographies should be about three sentences (maximum 75 words) and should include your institutional affiliation and research interests. Articles should be 3000 words (plus bibliography). All articles will be refereed and must adhere to MLA style (6th edition). mandatory reporting for online health research

Dear AoIRists, I'm facing a tricky problem and would like to borrow your wisdom! I am designing a small pilot project to interview creators of self-injury imagery via email or text chat. Last week I received comments from the REB at my institution (a mental health hospital + research institution) that raised a couple of concerns about ethical responsibility. In particular, I am seeking help/suggestion for the following two questions; 1. How can distress and sucidality be determined by email? 2. How can mandatory reporting requirements be met? Seemingly, these comments are directed to clinical professionals who are eligible to assess the level of urgency in situ (i.e. distress and/or suicidality). So I am not sure how non-medical professionals like myself address this issue to convince the REB. I'm consulting with clinicians but they don't have much experience conducing studies online. Also, mandatory reporting for online researchers is a tricky one. I'm planning to recruit participants at an online forum for self-injurers, where members come from all over the world. How can an online research fulfill mandatory reporting requirements if participants are from different jurisdictions? To whom should I report? Thanks a lot in advance for your help. This novel book advances our understanding of how democratic citizens are transformed by the "Facebook revolution". Despite increasing interest in politics and popular media, there has been little academic work on the impact of Facebook on politics in general, and on democratic processes in particular. The work that does exist has been limited to Facebook's impact on politics as a mobilization tool used by social movement activists. In this book, José Marichal argues that understanding Facebook's impact on political processes requires an understanding of how Facebook's architecture of disclosure shapes the construction of individuals' political identities by drawing users further into their pre-selected social networks. Hi, everyone, Thanks so much for all your help, from those of you commenting both here in the list and off of it. Yes, Barry, it was Nathan Jurgenson's work that first inspired me to carry on with my current project, sorry I didn't mention knowing about it. I also consulted with him initially, well before posting my inquiry. Nathan and PJ Rey are running their third Theorizing the Web conference, this year in NYC. Of course, much work has dealt with the issue some, including mine on relationships, identities and communities, and thanks for your own important list of contributions, your references. Thankfully there is now such a wealth of writing and research available. However, some of us think we still have a way to go in, to use your words, "flesh"-ing out dimensions of the processes. There's really still much more to say about it at this time, imo. Most these days seem to not only accept that online/mobile/cmc interaction is real but that it is less discrete from other activities than many of us early internet researchers and private citizens had originally conceived, and experienced back then. Anyone else who has specific references, please feel free to continue sending them to me and/or posting them. Here are my original questions previously posted to the aoirlist. I'm hoping the formatting is better this time: "For a piece I'm preparing on interaction back and forth between online and offline or from digital to physical worlds and back, I'm looking for references about how that works for people, especially those who are members of online communities. More than particular data to show this communication in process, although that is good too, I want to conceptualize themovement, the "flow" from one realm to another, to describe what is happening. Also, how does the online communication, including that through mobile phones, affect the offline interaction, and how do the offline encounters affect what goes on inside the online communities and in other social media containing some of the same people interacting offline. This project is part of my music fan research on fan communities, identities, and relationships. I'm already aware of the articles in the first issue of Mobile Media and Communication (January, 2013), and of Lauren Sessions-Goulet's excellent paper of a few years back on offline meetings and online communities, and have a few other helpful sources. I've done a body of work on romantic online relationships so I understand many of the dynamics there. Please feel free to write off list or on.
