Surveillance, defined as “any collection and processing of personal data, whether identifiable or not, for the purposes of influencing or managing those whose data have been garnered” (Lyon, 2001), is a distinctive product of the modern world and as this world has become liquefied so too has surveillance. > Why do people so willingly comply with surveillance and how does this liquidity suck everyone into its stream as participants? These and other questions will be addressed during the book presentation by Professor David Lyon (Director of the Surveillance Studies Centre, Queens University, Canada) of his new book Liquid Surveillance: A Conversation, which he co-authored with Zygmunt Bauman (Professor Emeritus of Sociology, University of Leeds, United Kingdom). > The presentation will be followed by a lively roundtable discussion moderated by William Webster, University of Stirling (UK) with the following panellists: Ann Rudinow Sætnan, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NO), Didier Bigo, King's College London (UK) and Kristin Veel, University of Copenhagen (DK). > Organised by VUB-LSTS and LISS (Living in Surveillance Societies)-COST Action in cooperation with Polity Press and deBuren. > > REGISTRATION: Please RSVP to following address: rvbrakel[a]vub.ac.be > Wednesday 23 January 2013 - 20:00 (drinks at 19.30) > > > Rocco Bellanova > > CReSPo- FUSL & LSTS- VUB > rocco.bellanova(a)vub.ac.be > > Have a look at my Bepress page: http://works.bepress.com/rocco_bellanova/ > > Visit the Computers, Privacy and Data Protection - CPDP page: www.cpdpconferences.org > > > >

Reminder: An Education in Facebook (Chapter abstracts due 18 Jan)
by Tama Leaver 09 Jan '13

09 Jan '13

Reminder, chapter abstracts due Friday, 18 January 2013 … *An Education in Facebook? * *Higher Education and the World’s Largest Social Network* Editors: Dr Mike Kent, Dr Tama Leaver and Dr Clare Lloyd, Internet Studies, Curtin University Abstract Submission Deadline: Friday, 18 January 2013 Full Chapters Due: Friday, 31 May 2013 We are soliciting chapter proposals for an edited collection entitled *An Education in Facebook?* This edited collection will focus on the relationship between Facebook and Higher Education. Facebook first emerged in 2004 as a social network for students studying at universities in the United States. It soon grew beyond North America, and beyond the confines of student networking. Having evolved initially as a student social space the platform continues to play a prominent role in the lives of many students and staff at higher education institutions. The collection will explore the use of Facebook the higher education environment as both a social space, and also its growing use as part of teaching and learning processes, both formally and informally. From students creating informal social groups around a course of study or particular unit, and dedicated online study groups, to the use of Facebook as a formal venue for teaching, we are seeking chapters that explore these and related areas. Is there an appropriate place for Facebook in formal higher education? What are the tensions between private and professional spaces online for students and teachers and what are the potential dangers of unintentional overlap? What are appropriate roles and responsibilities for staff, students and institutions in relation to the social network? What are the dangers of moving important aspects of the higher education learning environment to an external company that exploits social interaction for profit? How is the shift to online learning in many institutions complemented or challenged by mobile uses of social networks, including app use on smartphones and tablets? This book will explore these and other topics interrogating the contemporary role of Facebook in Higher Education. Some suggested topics (which are by no means exhaustive): · Facebook and/as/or Learning Management Systems? · Facebook as support network (for online and overseas learners, for example) · Teacher-led Facebook uses as in/formal learning · Student-led Facebook uses as in/formal learning · Case studies of Facebook implementation in formal learning · Informal versus formal learning online · Social networks and the flipped classroom · Context collapse · Privacy issues in social network use · Copyright issues in social network use · Mobile learning · The Facebook App in education · Roles and boundaries in networked learning · Facebook as a backchannel (either positive or disruptive) · The politics of ‘friending’ in staff and student relations · Examples of innovative Facebook integration in higher education · Whether Facebook has a place in formal education · MOOCs and Facebook · Comparative uses of Facebook and other online networks (eg Twitter) Submission procedure: Potential authors are invited to submit chapter abstract of no more than 500 words, including a title, 4 to 6 keywords, and a brief bio, by email to both Dr Mike Kent <m.kent(a)curtin.edu.au> and Dr Tama Leaver < t.leaver(a)curtin.edu.au> by 18 January 2013. (Please indicate in your proposal if you wish to use any visual material, and how you have or will gain copyright clearance for visual material.) Authors will receive a response by February 15, 2013, with those provisionally accepted due as chapters of no more than 6000 words (including references) by 31 May 2013. About the editors: The three editors are from the Department of Internet Studies at Curtin University. Dr Mike Kent’s research focus is on people with disabilities and their use of, and access to, information technology and the Internet. He recently co-authored the monograph *Disability and New Media* (Routledge, 2011). His other area a research interest is in higher education and particularly online education. Dr Tama Leaver researches online identities, digital media distribution and networked learning. He previously spent several years as a lecturer in Higher Education Development, and is currently also a Research Fellow in Curtin’s Centre for Culture and Technology. His recent book is *Artificial Culture: Identity, Technology and Bodies* (Routledge, 2012), and he is currently co-authoring a monograph entitled *Web Presence: Staying Noticed in a Networked World*. Dr Clare Lloyd specialises in mobile communication and mobile media. Her recent publications include the co-authored papers ‘Consuming apps: the Australian woman’s slow appetite for apps’ (2012); and ‘Fun and useful apps: female identity construction and social connectedness using the mobile phone’ apps’ (2012). CFP Reminder: Interactions - Studies in Communication and Culture - Abstract deadline 1/15
by Peaslee, Robert 07 Jan '13

07 Jan '13

Colleagues, With all due apologies for cross-posting: Call for Papers: Special Issue of Interactions: Studies in Communication and Culture The Host City: (Re)Locating Media Events in the Network Era Guest Editor: Robert Moses Peaslee, Texas Tech University Assistant Guest Editor: Brendan Kredell, University of Calgary As media events (Couldry, Hepp & Krotz, 2010; Dayan & Katz,1992) of all stripe proliferate around the world, a variety of stakeholdersjockey for position and advantage in the geographical and cultural contextschosen to host them. Media events, as Dayan and Katz famously characterizedthem, were defined in part by their liveness, their physical remoteness from the majority of their “audience,” their interruptive nature, and their status, nonetheless, as pre-planned (prominent examples today would include the Olympic games, the annual film festival at Cannes, the Super Bowl, and music festivals such as Chicago’s Lollapalooza). Many of these events are consistently located, well-established and have assumed a defensive position aimed at maintainingbrand identity and prestige. Others, such as the Olympics, change locations, while others (such as Austin, TX’s Fantastic Fest) are ascendant, and still others are nascent at best. Each host community, however, has a unique relationship to their event(s), and each of these relationships provides fertile ground for investigating the role of media events in promoting discourses of community identity, establishing infrastructural and externalnetworks, reifying the importance of being mediated, utilizing the "local” to speak "globally,” and a variety of other processes. This special issue of Interactions: Studies in Communication and Culture seeks research articles engaging the media events literature and investigating the relationship between event and location, between location-as-text and location-as-infrastructure, between location and audience, between location and industry, and other relevant relationships, all in the context of networked media structures. Some relevant topics areas include, but are by no means limited to: Host city branding and image management Networked media events: the impact of social media Media events and host city governance Discourses of place in the media event “Thereness” and virtuality in the media event Media events as sites of resistance Community and ritual Media events, promotion and (g)local media Fannish practices in/around the media event The political economy of the media event The audience experience: affect, memory, place Media events and mobility Comparative analyses of host cities in media event contexts Prospective authors should submit an abstract of approximately 500 words no later than January 15, 2013 to robert.peaslee(a)ttu.edu<mailto:robert.peaslee@ttu.edu><mailto:robert.peaslee@ttu.edu>. Abstracts will be reviewed by the editors on a rolling basis until then. Those authors whose abstracts are accepted will be required to submit full articles of 6000-7000 words (inclusive of notes, appendices, and works cited) no later than March 15, 2013. Full articles will be subject to a blind peer-review process, meaning that acceptance of an abstract does not denote acceptance of the full article. We anticipate accepting approximately 12 abstracts in order to produce an issue of 6-7 articles. Any revisions required by the reviewers will be expected by mid-June in order to publish the issue in early 2014. Authors wishing to propose relevant book reviews for the issue should also submit an abstract by January 15, 2013. Questions and abstracts should be directed torobert.peaslee(a)ttu.edu<mailto:robert.peaslee@ttu.edu><mailto:robert.peaslee@ttu.edu>. Also, anyone interested in serving as a reviewer should send a brief letter of interest along with a CV to bkredell(a)ucalgary.ca<mailto:bkredell@ucalgary.ca><mailto:bkredell@ucalgary.ca> Thanks and Happy Holidays!
