Re: [Air-L] Air-L Digest, Vol 101, Issue 25

That's an interesting example Annika. I thought I'd chip in my own anecdote as I've never formally looked into the subject but would like to read some work on it. A cousin of mine plays World of Warcraft and has made a few friends through it - some of whom he has met offline. A couple of years ago he logged on to find that a woman he had known for three years had died in a car crash. Her husband was one of the people he had met in person and he had spoken to her over voice chat. My cousin was pretty upset as you can imagine. His feelings became more confused when it transpired through a series of emails that the dead woman he was mourning never existed! The man claiming to be her husband had invented her. Going as far as to modify his voice over software whilst pretending to be his fictional wife. It's possible there are still people online who think of her as a real person who died. I found the blurring of the lines between fiction and reality, even with a subject (death) which is supposedly the ultimate in real fascinating. I'm not sure my cousin shared my academic interest though. My father was an online poet from the UK, but quite popular in Australia and when we had to tell people of his death, it was quite interesting contacting the various message boards he was a member of. When we play the Wii now, his character is still on there and it is funny when he appears in games as his Wii character. Feedback requested: The Ethics of Social Honeypots
by Dave Dittrich 01 Jan '13

01 Jan '13

Hi all, For those who did not attended our panel on "Other Ethics" at AoIR in Manchester, my contribution was to mention a DHS-supported effort to develop principles and applications for ethical evaluation of ICT research and how it can help in studying computer crime in ICT settings. If you are not familiar with the Menlo Report and want to learn more, see: Michael Bailey, David Dittrich, Erin Kenneally, and Douglas Maughan. The Menlo Report. Security & Privacy, IEEE, 10(2):71–75, March/April 2012. http://staff.washington.edu/dittrich/papers/menlo_report/menlo_report.pdf Two of my Menlo colleagues and I recently taught a didactic course at the PRIM&R IRB conference in San Diego. The course primarily described the Menlo Report process, but concluded with a mock IRB committee review of a fictional proposed research project in which researchers develop countermeasures to malicious botnets in social network platforms like Facebook using a combination of deception to build a social network of over 1 million users and to then use "good bots" that infiltrate the "bad bots". I would be very interested in hearing any feedback from researchers on this list who study social networks and have had experience with their own IRBs as to whether this paper is helpful and in what ways, or how it could be modified to be more helpful. You can find the paper here: David Dittrich. The Ethics of Social Honeypots. Available at SSRN: http://ssrn.com/abstract=2184997, 2012. P.S. Stuart Schecter already pointed out to me that Facebook provides a back-end service to researchers that would obviate the need to use deception in order to get the same information necessary to detect malicious botnets. I was not aware of it and possibly many others are not as well. Regardless, the discussion of how to address the issues of deception in ICT research studies is still important to consider. -- Dave Dittrich dittrich(a)apl.washington.edu http://staff.washington.edu/dittrich PGP key: http://staff.washington.edu/dittrich/pgpkey.txt Fingerprint: 097B 4DCB BF16 E1D8 A06C 7512 A751 C80A D15E E079 -- Dave Dittrich dittrich(a)apl.washington.edu http://staff.washington.edu/dittrich PGP key: http://staff.washington.edu/dittrich/pgpkey.txt Fingerprint: 097B 4DCB BF16 E1D8 A06C 7512 A751 C80A D15E E079

e-burying the dead
by Barry Wellman 31 Dec '12

About 10 years ago, my great friend Judy Merril died. As a Science Fiction editor/writer and personage around Toronto and NYC, she had a large network. It fell to me to be her Email executor. (No other social media in those days.) I had her password, and I spent real time in the next few months responding to those who were still writing to her. In some cases, people wrote as a memorial. I remember Spider Robinson's in particular. _______________________________________________________________________

New issue: Game Studies 2012 -02
by Jessica Enevold 31 Dec '12

31 Dec '12

New Issue of Game Studies Journal Game Studies: The International Journal of Computer Game Research has just published its latest issue (Volume 12, Issue 2, December 2012). All articles are available at http://gamestudies.org/1202/ Contents: The Algorithmic Experience: Portal as Art by Michael Burden, Sean Gouglas http://gamestudies.org/1202/articles/the_algorithmic_experience Art requires criticism. Portal transcends videogame tropes: it explores the human struggle against algorithmic processes through complex parallels between the player, Chell, the companion cube, and GLaDOS. Increasingly complex frustrations are experienced directly through the game’s aesthetic of play - a freedom bounded by algorithmic control. In the Double Grip of the Game: Challenge and Fallout 3 by Sara Mosberg Iversen <http://gamestudies.org/1202/articles/in_the_double_grip_of_the_game>http://gamestudies.org/1202/<http://gamestudies.org/1202/articles/in_the_double_grip_of_the_game>articles/in_the_double_grip_<http://gamestudies.org/1202/articles/in_the_double_grip_of_the_game>of_the_game<http://gamestudies.org/1202/articles/in_the_double_grip_of_the_game> A broad notion of challenge, conceptualized as both demanding and stimulating situations, is here proposed as a basis for holistic analysis of digital games which takes both the games’ mechanic and semiotic dimensions into equal account. The offered framework is demonstrated through application in an analysis of Fallout 3. Death Loop as a Feature by Olli Tapio Leino <http://gamestudies.org/1202/articles/death_loop_as_a_feature>http://gamestudies.org/1202/<http://gamestudies.org/1202/articles/death_loop_as_a_feature>articles/death_loop_as_a_<http://gamestudies.org/1202/articles/death_loop_as_a_feature>feature<http://gamestudies.org/1202/articles/death_loop_as_a_feature> This essay is a critical examination of the paradigmatic approach of interpreting computer games as games accessible for analysis and critique through 'research-play'. The essay justifies a differentiation between game design research and game studies, and explores the avenues of analysis and critique of single-player computer games for the latter. A Study of User Interface Modifications in World of Warcraft by Sean Targett, Victoria Verlysdonk, Howard J. Hamilton, Daryl Hepting <http://gamestudies.org/1202/articles/ui_mod_in_wow>http://gamestudies.org/1202/<http://gamestudies.org/1202/articles/ui_mod_in_wow>articles/ui_mod_in_wow<http://gamestudies.org/1202/articles/ui_mod_in_wow> This paper studies the effect that user created interfaces have had on WoW and its community of users through an online survey issued to WoW players. The survey results illustrate the varied nature of this community and provide information that may aid in the creation of communities dedicated to modifying the interfaces of other software packages.
