by Raquel Recuero 07 Jan '13

07 Jan '13

Dear all, I'm interested in proposing a panel to IR 14.0 (http://ir14.aoir.org/cfp/) focusing on violence and social media. The idea is to discuss how social media appropriation is, in several ways, creating violent practices and helping spread hate and aggression in social network sites. So, if any of you is researching something close to the topic and is interested in going to IR, please, let me know. :) Thanks, Raquel Recuero

CfP CHI 2013 Workshop on Exploring the Diversity of Families: Designing Technologies for the Contemporary Family Life
by Konstantinos Kazakos 03 Jan '13

03 Jan '13

Call for participation: *CHI 2013 workshop on Exploring the Diversity of Families: Designing Technologies for the Contemporary Family Life* IMPORTANT DATES: • Submission by: January 11th, 2013 • Notification of Acceptance: February 8th, 2013 • Workshop days: Sunday April 28, 2013 Website: http://www.design4diversefamilies.org/<https://owa.unimelb.edu.au/owa/redir.aspx?C=a83X0gBUoE6eefeiAo05VVE7kqSSvc8…> Contact: *design4diversefamilies(a)gmail.com* ************************** In recent years, the HCI community has expanded its interest to include exploring the role of technology within the domestic domain; particularly in the context of families and technology. Numerous studies have focused on mapping the challenges and opportunities faced in designing technologies that are appropriated to the needs of contemporary families. However, few research lines have focused on supporting families with diverse structures and situations (i.e. divorced, same-sex, dealing with death, work-related periodic separation and reunion). This workshop aims to explore the research space of family design and further our understanding of what it means to design technologies for diverse family structures. During the workshop we will readdress the meaning of a diverse family, the methods used to conduct family research as well as discuss design and evaluation techniques with a focus on user experience. This one-day workshop will bring together researchers, practitioners and designers who are interested in furthering our understanding of designing technologies for diverse families. Indicative examples of these family types include those separated by divorce, families that experience periodic transitions between being together and apart due to work-related reasons, foster and many-children families, same-sex and multicultural families as well as families experiencing chronic illnesses. During the workshop we will revisit the meaning of a diverse family, the methods used to conduct family research as well as discuss design and evaluation techniques with a focus on user experience. We invite authors to submit their *4-6 page position papers** *(in the Extended Abstract Format<https://owa.unimelb.edu.au/owa/redir.aspx?C=a83X0gBUoE6eefeiAo05VVE7kqSSvc8…> ), *video or photo essays* (up to a maximum of 2 minutes of viewable content), or *fieldwork narratives* (4-6 pages) that relate to the broad theme of diverse families and technology. Discussion topics include but are not limited to: ▪ Theoretical conceptualizations of diverse families; ▪ empirical studies within this space; ▪ methods and tools for diverse families; ▪ evaluation practices of technologies for diverse families; ▪ guidelines or lessons learned; ▪ ethical considerations. Submissions should be sent in *pdf* format to * design4diversefamilies(a)gmail.com*. Position papers will be reviewed by the organizers according to their significance, quality of presentation, as well as their potential to stimulate discussion. The accepted papers will be uploaded to the workshop's website. Please do note that all workshop participants must register for both the workshop and for at least one day of the main CHI 2013 conference. The reason for this policy is that workshops are supposed to be a part of the CHI conference, not separate events that happen to be in the same location at the same time. The intention is that people will be attending the conference as well. For some early indication on prices, please refer to last year's workshop & conference pricing: http://chi2012.acm.org/registration.shtml<https://owa.unimelb.edu.au/owa/redir.aspx?C=a83X0gBUoE6eefeiAo05VVE7kqSSvc8…> Please feel free to email us if you have any questions about the workshop. We look forward to receiving your submissions. ********************************* *Workshop Organizers* Konstantinos Kazakos, The University of Melbourne, Australia Elizabeth Bales, University of California San Diego, USA Carman Neustaedter, Simon Fraser University, Canada Svetlana Yarosh, AT&T Labs, USA Joseph ‘Jofish’ Kaye, Yahoo! 2nd CFP: CHI 2013 Workshop "Designing Gamification", deadline Jan 11
by Sebastian Deterding 03 Jan '13

03 Jan '13

## SECOND CALL FOR PARTICIPATION ## ## CHI 2013 Workshop Designing Gamification: ## ## Creating Gameful and Playful Experiences ## In recent years, gamification – the use of game design elements in non-game contexts – has seen rapid adoption in domains such as education, work, self-management, health and well-being, sustainability, or civic participation. In parallel, a growing body of research has studied its uses and effects, as well as the evaluation of game user experience in general. Yet little is known about the effective designing of gameful systems. This one-day workshop therefore convenes HCI, games, and design researchers as well as industry practitioners to take stock of current design practices and approaches to gameful systems, chart challenges, issues, and best practices, and identify key opportunities and questions for future research. You will also get to pop balloons. # Topics of Special Interest # * Postmortems, lessons learned, recurrent challenges and issues encountered in the design of gameful systems * Design models, principles, methods, tools, and evaluation methods adapted from interaction and game design * General and domain-specific constraints, opportunities, facilitating and success-critical conditions of gamification # Submission Information # We invite interested participants to submit a 3-4 page position paper in the CHI extended abstract format to Sebastian Deterding at chi2013(a)gamification-research.org. Researchers and practitioners with first-hand experience in designing a gameful system may alternatively submit a slide deck outlining their experience. For further information, see the workshop site http://gamification-research.org/chi2013/how-to-submit. Papers and slide decks will undergo a peer-jury process and 15-20 will be selected, with preference to submissions based on actual design experience. At least one author of each accepted paper needs to register for the workshop and for one or more days of the conference. # Important Dates # * Submission Deadline: January 11, 2013 * Notification of Acceptance: February 8, 2013 * Workshop: April 28, 2013
