I can offer some suggestions of people doing work that intersects disability studies and internet studies - Gerard Goggin, Christopher Newell, and Katie Ellis are the first names that come to mind. A lot of the work done in this area addresses the issues of accessibility and so forth, but also extends to issues of inclusion and participation for people with disabilities. Seeking literature: History of media transitions

I know I have read about this several times, but now that I actually need it I can't find it anywhere... I am looking for literature describing what has happened when new media has been introduced, especially in terms of consequeces for democracy. What I am trying to show is that a lot of the same things happen with each new medium (utopian/dystopian views, hype and later normalisation when the new medium has become part of the established order), but at the same time there is a disruption and a new logic to be learned. regards Marius Rohde Johannessen research fellow department of Information Systems university of Agder

Apologies for cross-posting, but I think some on this list will be interested: *Whither Small Data?: The limits of “big data” and the value of “small data” studies* *Call for Papers* *Association of American Geographers Annual Meeting* *9-13 April 2012 Los Angeles, CA* *Organizers* Jim Thatcher, Department of Geography, Clark University Ryan Burns, Department of Geography, University of Washington Geographers studying technology have recently turned their gaze upon “big data” – massive datasets produced through the aggregation of crowdsourced, social, and other digitally available data. While the data itself may not be new, the ability to rapidly aggregate and analyze previously unheard of combinations of data has led to an increased focus on its importance to social explanation. Geographers have contributed to big data studies by incorporating the spatial dimension that is increasingly attached to such data and, in turn, exploring the ways big data has come to mediate the urban experience (Batty 2012). Amidst this enthusiasm, some concern has been raised as to the diminished interest in ‘small data’ studies, the epistemic limits of big data, and the new challenges posed to privacy/confidentiality, access, data ownership, and ethical use, with the editor of Wired magazine infamously declaring that big data signals the ‘end of theory’ (Anderson 2008). Perhaps the most trenchant critique of big data came in the form of six provocations intending to temper unbridled enthusiasm surrounding big data (boyd and Crawford 2012), while others have tried to retain the important focus on small-scale research methodologies such as interviews, participant observation, ethnography, and grounded theory (Burrell 2012). Rather than the deterministic result of technological development, big data and its accompanying methodologies are embedded within social and institutional values while also imbricating social relations in particular ways. The means and results of these processes offer rich potential for research; in other words, there is an impetus to study big data in its social and institutional contexts. To this end, critical GIS, feminist geography, critical social theory, and science & technology studies all promise to lend productive insights into these processes. This session aims to explore these questions through both empirical and theoretical discussions, hopefully launching future conversation. *Potential Questions:* -Does “big data” represent a further step in the so-called computational turn, or is it something new? -What are the epistemological commitments entailed in a “big data” study? -What decisions entangle big data in existing social relations? How might these decisions shape future relations? -In what contexts has the big data phenomenon developed, and how have these influenced its attendant concepts, methods, and uses? -What is the continued role of “small data” vis-a-vis increased attention to big data? Where is big data not appropriate or advantageous? -In what ways can critical theories of technology contribute to big data studies? From what other theoretical bases can big data draw? How might ‘small data’ studies draw upon these schools of thought when critiquing big data? -What ethical dilemmas are introduced by big data, and from what ethical frameworks should big data draw? -How do the implications of big data differ across diverse communities, populations, and demographics? How are race, gender, class, and other forms of difference implicated differently? Miami University – School of Education, Health & Society (EHS) and Armstrong Institute for Interactive Media Studies (AIMS) seek candidates for the Armstrong Professorship in Digital Learning. An ideal candidate for this endowed, full time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor must be a highly effective educator; produce innovative and fundable scholarship that simultaneously reflects and advances the vision, mission, and national/international reputation of both EHS and AIMS; perform service to the institution which could include development of: curricula, internship programs, or digital learning programs. *Dear All, The Centre for Media and Film Studies, School of Arts at the School of Oriental and African Studies invites you to join the Small Media Initiative for its second conference, Rethinking small media, to take place at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London on 6-7 October 2012. Much has been happening in the terrain of small media and political change, from the Arab Spring to the Occupy movements and more, and much has already been written and discussed. We want to use this event to think with, and through, unanswered questions and perhaps pose some more. In the debates about the potential for digital connectivity and new media to enhance or alter politics, the debates appear frozen around immovable binaries, such as: theory versus practice small versus big media space versus place change versus continuity old/new social movements versus new/old social movements control versus circumvention Given their longevity, perhaps these binaries are significant, but we neither expect to erase nor to resolve them. Instead we aim to explore why they are so intractable and focus on the issues they raise, helping us to define and perhaps better answer the important questions of the day: ‐ What are the specific affordances of face-to-face politics and of new media politics and how/when can they complement each other? ‐ What are the characteristics of old social movements and the new; what might each learn from the other and which are most successful at achieving their aims? ‐ How are small media echoed and elaborated by big media, and how can their inter-relationships be fostered? ‐ What kinds of regimes of control are currently operative and how can and do activists and publics circumvent the circumvenors? Each of these four issues will be addressed by a pair of speakers who come from different regimes of practice (academe, journalism, activism, technology) and their papers further interrogated by a third. Indexing something about speed, medium, and audience participation, "viral" has come to signify a method of movement that both references but exceeds the biological. In media as diverse as cell phone videos of the Occupy Movements and revolutions across North Africa and the Middle East to CSI shows, bioterror video games, and Twitter feeds tracking TSA airport screening practices, visual culture seems inextricably linked to the viral both in terms of representation and media production. Viral has become both metaphor and materiality, linking digital technologies and social media practices to medical cultures, disease patterns, and military networks. This panel seeks papers that explore the specifically visual dimensions of "viral"--what role do visuality and visual media practices play in producing, circulating, and consuming ideas about the viral, viruses, and virality? How does the viral necessitate a redefinition of what visual culture and visual studies is, and how we engage it? Sports have traditionally had a curious relationship with the academy and particularly within the arts, where they are often treated as ‘low-brow’, anti-intellectual and popular pursuits. Of the academic work that has addressed sport, very little has focused on its highly visual nature. Rather, the dominant approach, found in the history and sociology of sport, situates sport as a social phenomenon and highlights the social and economic structures of sporting events, sports organizations and professions, as well as the mediation of sport, most specifically through television. By contrast, this panel examines the specific intersection of sport and visual representation. Sports are inextricably bound to visual technologies and, as such, are a rich site of analysis for visual studies scholars. Importantly, the panel emphasizes the myriad ways in which sports and images intersect: images are used as pedagogical tools in sport as they are produced, circulated and read by coaches, athletes, trainers and sports medicine professionals; they are used as juridical tools that either replace or augment the human eye in sporting events; they serve commercial purposes as in television and print advertising; they are used as entertainment in television, film and new media; and they form an essential part of visual culture as manifest in visual art, pop culture and other forms of visual culture production. The panel calls for a rethinking of sport and its relationship to visual studies. Whether pedagogical, juridical, commercial, aesthetic or otherwise, images of sport are fundamental components of contemporary visual culture: they are bound to cultural conceptions of class, race, nation and gender and are enmeshed in the fundamental economic and institutional infrastructures of society. The panel seeks to explore this topic in hopes of bringing new perspectives, theories and approaches to analyzing sport and visual culture.
