Call for Papers: Bridging the 'real' and the 'virtual'
by Karin Garrety 12 Oct '12

12 Oct '12

Hi all, Here is a call for papers for the European Group for Organisational Studies Colloqiuim to be held in Montréal next July. Conference link is here: http://www.egosnet.org/2013_montreal/general_theme 29th EGOS Colloquium Montréal, Canada July 4–6, 2013 Bridging Continents, Cultures and Worldviews Sub-theme 55: Bridging the Real and the Virtual in a Digital World Call for Papers (due: Monday, January 14, 2013) In recent decades we have seen much 'cyberbole' about an emerging 'virtual society' in which digital technologies are supposedly transforming our lives. This putative transformation hinges on a polarity between computer-generated 'virtual' experiences and mundane everyday 'realities' in which we are limited by natural and built environments, geography, linear experiences of time and the confines of our bodies. In the virtual world the tyrannies of space, time, distance, objects and bodies can, to some extent, be overcome. Our analytical resources are arguably deficient to explain the organisational phenomena rapidly emerging on the back of advances in digital technologies. Where do the virtual, the material and the social fit in with everyday organisational experiences and practice? Is the virtual in the digital world 'material' or 'social' or both? Post-contingency theory organisation studies rejected 'technological determinism' in all its guises. Instead, various forms of constructivism and social shaping were developed, tempered by attempts to bring the material back in (McLoughlin & Dawson, 2003). In a radically new approach Barad (2007) suggests we need to rethink the bridge between the material and the social. This idea has been taken up enthusiastically in recent practice-based and sociomaterial approaches (e.g. Orlikowsk, 2010) which seek to avoid 'throwing the technology baby out with the determinist bathwater' (Clark et al., 1988). Bridging work, it seems, remains at the core of making, and making sense of social and organisational experiences in the digital world. The notion of bridging provides the basis for this sub-theme as a forum to reflect on and investigate relationships between virtual technologies and the real world organisations and settings in which they are developed, taken up and used (or not). In particular, we welcome papers on the following: • Bridging Distance (physical, social, cultural, geographical): Beyond the hype, how are technologies such as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, ambient intelligence and immersive technology being used in organisations, and with what effects, to overcome the tyranny of distance? • Bridging Time: In the virtual world everything is speeded up. Virtual realities bridge time or even suspend notions of time in a conventional sense (e.g. gaming and simulation environments) through 24-hour global production or the creation of immersive virtual collaborative environments. • Bridging Space (home, work and third places): The cybercafé has emerged as the archetypal 'third place' in which innovation can occur in ways that are not so readily achieved elsewhere. Does virtual technology now allow a bridging between these spatial settings in ways hitherto unimagined (e.g. bridging video games with other activities, such as learning and work tasks)? • Bridging Projects: In the past decade we have seen some large and expensive IT projects fail spectacularly. What do they tell us about the ways we understand and manage (or fail to manage) bridges between the virtual and the real? • Bridging Citizen and State by making public services virtual. For example, government sponsored websites with advice about health, social security, immigration, law and so on are changing the way services are delivered. • Bridging Discourse and Cultural Practice: Efforts to improve technology design by involving potential users have been plagued by the inability of users and designers to commmunicate in a common language. Is a new and different discourse or cultural practice required to capture sociomaterial performativity? How can diverse worldviews be managed and harnessed to produce knowledge that is relevant and meaningful to practitioners from different disciplines? Public Lectures on the Psychology of New Media and Digital Piracy in IADT, Dublin
by Grainne Kirwan 12 Oct '12

12 Oct '12

Dear all Please see some details below regarding two free public events which will be held in the coming weeks in Dublin, Ireland. Please feel free to forward and share. Apologies for any cross-posting Grainne The Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Dun Laoghaire (IADT) is pleased to announce two public events being held as part of the Innovation Dublin 2012 festival. Both events are free, and examine human behaviour in relation to technology, the Internet, and digital piracy. The Psychology of New Media (7pm, 24th October 2012, Room A019, Atrium Building) The technologies we use influence our behaviour, sometimes in unusual and unexpected ways. Staff and postgraduate students in IADT examine many aspects of the psychology of new media, and this lecture presents highlights of their recent research. In particular, this event will focus on topics such as social networking, the use of artificial intelligence in customer service and therapy, using the Internet to search for medical information, online fraud and security, and the psychology of online dating. Digital Piracy & Psychology (5pm, 26th October 2012, Room A019, Atrium Building) There are many types of cybercrime but digital piracy is relatively unusual as its perpetrators rarely see themselves as criminals. As a result, the illegal copying and downloading of video, music and software is very common. This talk examines the psychology behind this offence, identifying why users engage in this behaviour and why they frequently don't see it as morally or legally problematic. The talk also uses psychological and criminological theory and research to offer suggestions on how levels of digital piracy might be reduced. Further details on psychological research in IADT is available through www.iadt.ie/ccta IADT also offer a number of full and part-time programmes in psychology, including a BSc (Hons) in Applied Psychology, a MSc in Cyberpsychology, and several accredited evening courses in subjects such as Human-Computer Interaction, Internet Research Methods, Cyberpsychology, Sport Psychology and Organisational Psychology. Further details on these programmes is available from www.iadt.ie IADT is part of Innovation Dublin 2012, which takes place across Dublin from Oct 15th -26th. The festival demonstrates Dublin’s capacity to inspire, interact and innovate. Job announcement: Uppsala University - Professorship in Media and Communication Studies
by Christian Fuchs 12 Oct '12

12 Oct '12

http://www.uu.se/jobb/teacher/annonsvisning?languageId=1&tarContentId=212903 Professor in Media and Communication Studies at the Department of Informatics and Media, Uppsala University, Sweden Application no later than 2012-11-01. UFV-PA 2012/2227 Uppsala University invites applications for the position of Chaired Professor in Media and Communication Studies at the Department of Informatics and Media. Nature of duties General responsibility for research and research education (Ph.D. level) within the field of Media and Communication Studies and responsibility for developing the area. Teaching and tutoring at all levels; own research; supplying information about research and development in the research field; planning and leading (including applying for research grants) research projects; active participation in the department's efforts to integrate research within Media and Communication Studies, Human-Computer Interaction and Information Systems (IS) (with a focus on the challenges within the society of digital networks). The candidate who is hired will have particular responsibility for the MA programs within the area. Administrative assignments and management functions may be relevant. Required Qualifications The eligibility criteria for employment as professor are scientific as well as pedagogic skills (Higher Education Ordinance Ch 4 Sec 3). According to the appointment regulations at UppsalaUniversity, it is also a general requirement that teachers have other skills which are necessary to carry out their duties. According to the regulations, scientific skills should be demonstrated through independent research and the scientific skills should be demonstrated through research activities of high international and national quality. The applicants’ contributions to the research area of Media and Communication Studies will be evaluated in terms of quality and quantity of publications in the most relevant journals and other prestigious research outlets within the field. Experience in planning, developing and managing research projects are of importance, including experience attracting external research grants and documented experience in the supervision of Ph.D. students. To be eligible for appointment as professor applicants must have completed teacher training of relevance to operations at the University, comprising ten weeks, or have acquired the equivalent knowledge. In the assessment of teaching skills the following will be taken into consideration: planning, carrying out and evaluation of teaching as well as supervising activities and examination. The ability to teach in Swedish and English is a requirement. An appointee that is only sufficiently proficient in one of these languages at the time of appointment is expected to be able to teach in the other within two years. Assessment Assessment for the appointment of the professor shall be based on the degree of the skills required for the appointment. For this position, the ranking will be based primarily on the scientific and teaching competences of the applicants, with special emphasis on scientific proficiency. This order of priorities of the different ranking criteria is not absolute. A combined consideration of all bases of assessment could result, for instance, in an applicant vastly superior in pedagogical proficiency being ranked higher than a candidate with superior scientific qualifications (who is considered less qualified pedagogically). In determining scientific proficiency, publication quality is the most important criteria. Following from this, publication quantity is important, as is documented ability to lead and develop research and documented experience in attracting external research funding. Established research networks and an ability to collaborate with surrounding society are also considered important. In examining scientific proficiency an important selection criteria will be applicants’ documented research addressing the challenges posed by the Information Society. Equal weight is given to the assessment of teaching skills and scientific skills. When determining pedagogical proficiency, documented experiences that demonstrate quality are the most important evaluation criteria. Following from this, skills and experience in the planning, execution and evaluation of teaching, as well as supervision and examination will be considered. An ability to link teaching to ongoing research within the field is important, as well as documented experience of teaching at university level. An ability to collaborate with other actors within and outside the university around questions related to pedagogical questions is also important. Administrative skills are important in filling this position and will be given significant weight, the same goes for other merits of importance to the position. Attention will also be given to applicants' ability to: co-operate, develop and supervise activities and staff, interact with the surrounding community and to inform the public about research and developmental work. Uppsala University will in this recruitment firstly consider the applicant that in the overall assessment of competence and skill is judged to have the best qualifications to carry out and develop the tasks within the position and contribute to a positive development of the department. General goal for the recruitment Uppsala University is striving to attain a more balanced gender distribution among its teachers. Since most full professors in the Faculty are men, women are especially invited to apply for this position. Other information of importance Personal circumstances (such as parental leave) that may benefit the applicants in the assessment of qualifications should be included in the list of qualifications and experience (Curriculum Vitae). How to apply A complete application written in English shall be submitted in three copies on paper. Please see our instructions about how to apply: http://www.samfak.uu.se/digitalAssets/129/129158_instructions_professor.pdf Additional information For additional information about the position, please consult the Head of Department, Mats Edenius (tel. +46 704-250762 or e-mail mats.edenius(a)im.uu.se) The trade union representatives are Anders Grundström, SACO (the Swedish Confederation of Professional Associations), phone +46 18 471 5380, Carin Söderhäll, TCO/ST (the Swedish Confederation of Professional Employees), phone +46 18 471 1996 and Stefan Djurström, SEKO (the Union of Service and Communication Employees), phone +46 18 471 3315. e-learning and disability - signposts to research/literature
by ruth topol 11 Oct '12

11 Oct '12

Hello learned Internet researchers! I'd really appreciate some references to good research studies in *disability and e-learning for adult learners*. I am a PhD student in the UK and this is also a new area of research in the department (of educational research) at my university. I'm particularly interested in physical disabilities and the difficulties which learners (and possibly their e-tutors) might face. To narrow this down, I am not going to be venturing into the area of learning (cognitive) difficulties. My thinking is taking me towards the route of investigating the use of *adaptive/assistive technologies* by these learners. (Do these technologies always work? are the staff trained to use the software e.g. for magnification of text on screens? Are the assistive technologies compatible with the e-courses? This is where my thinking is right now, but I'm open to new avenues of research, which would come through the literature review, hopefully!) I'm going to be doing this smallish literature review (for a short taught module) so that I can hopefully identify a narrowed-down, specific area of research for the dissertation later on. many thanks, Ruth Topol PhD student, UK

any publications on viewer or client use?
by katie vizenor 11 Oct '12

11 Oct '12

Hi, I am looking for any publications that might have to do with why Virtual World residents or VW residents might choose different clients or viewers, as they are called in the SL community. Here is why I ask: I am conducting work in Second Life among a very committed group of mentors/disability/education communities. I notice a lot of debate about what viewer is the best and there hase been some disagreement in the ranks when one group decides to support a certain viewer/client. SL has a number of clients that residents can choose from. Some apparently are better for artists/machinima filmmakers, others are for sex roleplay. This multiplicity of viewers seems more common in user content created worlds then in more game based worlds, but maybe I am wrong here. I am interested in any lists of viewers or any insight into the presence or absence of this in other worlds. I am even more interested in any discussion or literature that talks about the social/cultural/community consequences of the decision to use one or another. I hope this is clear. Thanks so much! Mark Poster, in memoriam
by jeremy hunsinger 10 Oct '12

10 Oct '12

> It is with immense sadness that we share the news that our dear colleague Mark Poster, Emeritus Professor of History and Film & Media Studies, passed away in the hospital earlier this morning. Mark Poster was a vital member of the School of Humanities, and for decades one of its most widely read and cited researchers. He made crucial contributions to two different departments, History and Film & Media Studies, and played a central role in UCI's emergence as a leading center for work in Critical Theory. > > In the first part of his career, when his focus was on modern European intellectual history, his path-breaking publications included the influential book *Existential Marxism in Postwar France* (Princeton University Press 1975), a study of the intellectual world around Jean-Paul Sartre. When the theory boom hit the U.S., thanks in part to this book, he became a widely sought-after authority on French critical thought, especially the writing of Michel Foucault, whose work he helped introduce to American audiences. He played a crucial role in setting the History Department on its current course, as one of the first departments--if not the first department--in the discipline with a required graduate sequence in theory. In that sequence Mark taught a Foucault seminar that became legendary. > > His investments in French intellectual history also positioned Mark Poster for crucial contributions to the Critical Theory Institute at UC Irvine, which he helped start as an informal reading group; by 1987 it was established as a campus research institute. The distinction of Irvine, reflected in the CTI, the graduate emphasis, the Critical Theory Archive, and departmental strengths, still defines the special character of the School, and contributes to its international reputation for scholarly innovation. Hosting internationally known scholars, the Critical Theory Institute with its public seminars and Wellek lecture series soon became one of the global hotspots in the humanities. > > In the second part of his career, Mark became a seminal theorist of media and technology. He was the founding chair of the Department of Film & Media Studies at UC Irvine. Together with Franco Tonelli and Eric Rentschler, he had helped shepherd the Film Emphasis of the early 1980s to Program status by the end of that decade, and then to departmentalization by 2002. In the process he was pivotal in hiring and mentoring faculty who now serve the School's second largest major. > > Mark Poster was a major figure in the rapid development of media studies and theory in the USA and internationally. While as an intellectual historian he could draw on Frankfurt School thought as well as on cybernetics, he was particularly interested in the potential of poststructuralism for media studies. From his translations of Baudrillard to his dissemination of Foucault, Poster played a highly influential role in the study of media culture, including television, databases, computing, and the Internet; he continued to offer crucial commentary on the relevance to technology and media of cultural theory, and his numerous articles and books have been translated into a number of different languages. Reflective of the breadth of his interests and expertise, Poster held courtesy appointments in the Department of Information and Computer Science and in the Department of Comparative Literature. First hired at UCI in 1968, Poster had recently retired after 40 years of service to the School and the Campus. > > We will let you know as plans for a memorial event in the School develop. In the meantime, we extend our condolences to his family and to all those close to him. > > Jim Steintrager, Interim Dean, School of Humanities > > Peter Krapp, Chair, Department of Film & Media Studies > > Jeff Wasserstrom, Chair, Department of History > > > jeremy hunsinger Communication Studies Wilfrid Laurier University Center for Digital Discourse and Culture Virginia Tech () ascii ribbon campaign - against html mail /\ - against microsoft attachments http://www.aoir.org The Association of Internet Researchers http://www.stswiki.org/ stswiki http://transdisciplinarystudies.tmttlt.com/ Transdisciplinary Studies:the book series
