Radarstation 2 - Call for Tracks
by wallace 03 Oct '12

Radarstation 2 â Call for tracks Fantomton is looking for musicians for a sound-project based on samples taken at the abandoned listening station at Teufelsberg Berlin. Link to the call: http://fantomton.de/experimente/radarstation-2-call-for-tracks/ *The Project* The abandoned listening station on the Teufelsberg Berlin has a magical atmosphere. The industrial area with its rusty metal surfaces, broken glass and the unique acoustic in the domes provide a rich repertoire of fascinating sounds which reflect the areaâs ambience. We could not resist the attraction of the place and visited it in 2009, equipped with microphones and recording devices. Subsequently the recordings were given to musicians in order to get different interpretations of the sound material. The goal was to translate the impressions of the place into music. The result is the release Radarstation: http://fantomton.de/releases/music/ft001-radarstation Due to great interest and a lot of positive reactions in the recent time, we once more would like to motivate artists to use our sound material to produce new exciting tracks. *How to contribute* The tracks should mainly consist of our samples and reflect the special atmosphere of the area, interpreted by the artists. The resulting works will be presented on our website and will be offered as âRadarstation 2â³ compilation for download. There is also the possibility of a CD release. The participating tracks should not be longer than 10 minutes and we would like to receive them in flac format. We will release the compilation under this creative commons license and need your approval [1]. Deadline is the 25. November 2012. *Recourses* You can find our samples in the Fantomon Dropbox: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/9fa44oynahx9bak/lQCZ7PSJdj Click Download -> As Zip As a further inspiration we recommend to go for a walk on Teufelsberg or take a look at the numerous pictures of the place. Conversion to flac: http://flac.sourceforge.net/download.html *Send us your track* - Goto http://www.dropitto.me/fantomton - Use password: radarstation - Select your flac file and press upload Have fun listening to the samples and producing music. We are looking forward to hear your compositions and thank you in advance! The Fantomton Team [1] http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/de/deed.en_US

Mobilities research is interdisciplinary, focusing on the systematic movement of people, goods and information that “travel” around the world at speeds that are greater than before, creating distinct patterns, flows– and blockages. Mobilities research contributes to the study of these technological, social and cultural developments from a critical perspective. The theme of this year’s conference is “Differential Mobilities: Movement and Mediation in Networked Societies”. The term ‘differential mobilities’ has been deployed to describe dynamics of power within networked societies. When we conceptualize movement, mobility, or flows within spaces and places, we need to account for the systemic differences within infrastructures and terrains that create uneven forms of access. ‘Differential mobilities’, conceptually, highlights how exclusions occur, creating striations of power. It draws attention to differences in how these inequalities are experienced, the strategies for resistance, and the processes of mediation that have been implemented to instigate change. > > We invite scholars, artists, and activists to submit creative presentations or papers that address all aspects of this theme, or related topics in mobilities research, such as: > > Alternative mobilities and slow movements; > Borders, surveillance, and securitization with ubiquitous and mobile technologies; > Class, culture and the mediation of mobilities; > Civic engagement and political participation through mobile social media, new mapping practices and location-aware technologies; > Creativity and the mobilization of resistance; > Discrimination and the built environment; > Embodiment, performance and mobile mediations; > Environmentalism, mediation and mobilities; > Immigration, migration and mobilities; > Indigenous culture and the mobilities paradigm; > Media theory and differential mobilities; > Mobile communications, differential mobilities and everyday life practices; > New methodologies for mobilities research; > Planning, policy and design for present and future mobilities; > Privacy and surveillance issues and location-based social networks; > Race, gender and the politics of mobilities; > Regulating networks; > Social movements and mediated mobilities; > Urban and rural spatialities and the geographies of place; > Tourism, imaginary travel, and virtual travel; > Transitions toward sustainable mobilities; > Transportation and differential movements; > > Disciplines represented at the conference may include (but are not exclusive to): Anthropology, Architecture and Design, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Communication, Criminology, Cultural Studies, Geography, Media, Sound and Visual Arts, Politics and International Relations, Public Policy, Sociology, Theatre and Performance Studies, Tourism Research, Transport Research, and Urban Studies. > > Conference location: > Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec > > Conference hotel: > Discounted rates will be available to registered participants. > > Important dates: > Deadline for abstracts: 21 November, 2012 > (maximum 300 words, including references) > Notification of acceptance: 15 January, 2013 > Conference registration opens: 15 January, 2013 > Early Registration deadline: 2 March 1, 2013 > Conference Dates: 8-11 May, 2013 > > Please submit your abstracts through the form hosted by the conference website by no later than November 21st: > http://mobilities.ca/pamnet-4/ > > Organizing Committee: > Kim Sawchuk (Concordia University, Québec) > Jim Conley (Trent University, Canada) > Owen Chapman (Concordia University, Québec) > Adriana de Souza e Silva (NC State University, USA) > Paola Jirón Martinez (University of Chile, Chile) > Mary Gray (Microsoft/Indiana Univerisity, USA) > Ole B. CFP - Para|Sites: Locations and Dislocations of Media, 2013 NYU Neil Postman Graduate Conference
by Michelle Forelle 02 Oct '12

02 Oct '12

Para|Sites: Locations and Dislocations of Media The 2013 Neil Postman Graduate Conference New York University | February 22, 2013 *CFP Deadline: November 18, 2012 ** * *“Networks are within the movement, with other movements around the world, with the Internet blogosphere, with the media and with society at large. Networking technologies are meaningful because they provide the platform for this continuing, expansive networking practice that evolves with the changing shape of the movement.”* — Manuel Castells, Networks of Outrage and Hope: Social Movements in the Internet Age (2012) The 2013 Neil Postman Graduate Conference takes *Para|Sites: Locations and Dislocations of Media* as its theme. *Para|Sites* aims to examine media practices that transform what is regulated and controlled, actions that reveal and exploit gaps in existing social, cultural, political and educational frameworks. “Para” indicates that which is to one side of, beyond, or alongside. This conference addresses the ways that media practices can subvert, recode, co-opt, and reroute networks, systems, and traditional media structures to achieve social and cultural agendas. At times these practices can occur at the expense of particular hosts: they exhibit “parasitical” behaviors in order to move into—or through—spaces in ways they cannot on their own. They can also generate alternative structures and divergent networks (“para-sites”) that facilitate undisciplined and innovative practices. As a field, media studies can be considered para-sited, hosting conflicts and confluences, challenging the very idea of disciplines, borders and identity. This conference aims to also look at possibilities in the field of media studies within disjunctures, dislocations, disruption, and crises, producing potentialities and alternatives. Possible topics and topic areas include (but are not limited to): “*Para—* ” individuals, groups, organizations, collectives exploiting/co-opting; counter-visualities, para-academia, disability studies, alt-porn, or ethnographic states of exception. “*Sites*” as the locations, habitats, and networks being exploited; limits and borders, new materialisms, digital ethnographies, and informal economies. “*Media Studies*” as host and/or para-site; disciplinary intersections, cybernetics, blogging, digital humanities. Keynote: *Manuel Castells*, Wallis Annenberg Chair in Communication Technology and Society<http://postmanconference.org/conferences/2013-para-sites/keynote/> at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California, will deliver the Keynote Speech. Castells will speak about networked social movements and communication power from his recent book Networks of Outrage and Hope: Social Movements in the Internet Age<http://www.amazon.com/Networks-Outrage-Hope-Movements-Internet/dp/0745662854> . The New York University Department of Media, Culture, and Communication<https://steinhardt.nyu.edu/mcc/> invites graduate students, academics, activists, workers, and artists to submit conference paper proposals. The conference will be held on *February 22, 2013* at NYU. Paper proposal submissions (no more than 300 words) should be sent by November 18, 2012 to mcc.events(a)nyu.edu (with “Call for Papers” in the subject). We also welcome ideas for artwork on the theme to be displayed during the conference.
