Axel Bruns beat me to it. Yes, I would advise YourTwapperkeeper for data collection as well. I've been using it for a while and am very pleased with it. Things are indeed very well described in the First Monday manuscript: http://firstmonday.org/htbin/cgiwrap/bin/ojs/index.php/fm/article/viewArtic… As for handling the data, I prefer to use SPSS. Yes, a statistical tool. But I use it primarily to handle the data. Also I use SPSS to match external data to the Twitter data. The data Twitter provides are of course somewhat limited. However if one taps into external data sets one is able to enrich Twitter data for more advanced analyses. Also, SPSS has recently incorporated many text handling features to create new variables based on text strings. It thus also allows for creating your own metrics because - as Axel Bruns states - Twitter's metrices are biased. See my blogpost: http://blog.mauricevergeer.nl/2011/04/18/bias-in-twitter-api-measurements/ As for Big Data analysis: without going for the Big Data, the number of observations already increases rapidly anyhow. See my presentation held at WAPOR Amsterdam: http://www.slideshare.net/maver/candidates-communication-patterns-on-twitter. SPSS can easily handle large amounts of data. As for large networks, I would recommend Pajek: http://mrvar.fdv.uni-lj.si/pajek/. They even released another version Pajek XXL for very very large networks. Finally I know R the statstical / programming software also has a Twitter package (http://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/twitteR/index.html) Have tried it once, but because I am noy (yet) an R-expert haven't used it since then. The advantage of using it in R would be that one cold stay within a single software environment. R also has text ( http://gking.harvard.edu/readme) and several network analytical packages. Book Announcement: Social Media as Surveillance
by Dan Trottier 29 Sep '12

29 Sep '12

Social Media as Surveillance: Rethinking Visibility in a Converging World, Ashgate Daniel Trottier, Department of Informatics and Media Uppsala University, Sweden This book develops a surveillance studies approach to social media by presenting first hand ethnographic research with a variety of personal and professional social media users. Using Facebook as a case-study, it describes growing monitoring practices that involve social media. What makes this study unique is that it not only considers social media surveillance as multi-purpose, but also shows how these different purposes augment one another, leading to a rapid spread of surveillance and visibility. ‘Internet platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Google have become very popular in recent years. They process, store, analyse, and commodify a lot of personal data, usage behaviour data, communication data, and social network data. Daniel Trottier’s book is a crucial and critical resource and must-read for all who want to understand the implications social media has for surveillance at the interpersonal and institutional level and for surveillance conducted by companies and the police.’ – Christian Fuchs, Uppsala University, Sweden ‘Social media are not just sites that we visit, but increasingly places where we reside. Such spaces are manufactured to augment surveillance, fostering types of visibility that are central to new forms of sociality and power relations. Professor Trottier’s book is an invaluable analysis of how a complex assortment of groups are making a home in this new domain of interactive monitoring.’ – Kevin D. Haggerty, University of Alberta, Canada ‘Looking for a wide-ranging, well-informed, up-to-date critical sociology of social media surveillance, focused on the Facebook phenomenon? This is it.’ – David Lyon, Queen’s University, Canada More info and sample pages available at: http://www.ashgate.com/isbn/9781409438892 To order, please visit: www.ashgate.com All online orders receive a discount

suggestions for Twitter aggregating & analytic tools
by Erica Ciszek 29 Sep '12

29 Sep '12

Dear Colleagues, I was wondering if anyone can suggest particular tools for aggregating and analyzing Twitter content. What are the best tools for gathering tweets (by hashtags) and for analyzing activity (by these hastags)? Appreciate any suggestions. Best, Erica Ciszek Doctoral Student Graduate Teaching Fellow School of Journalism and Communication University of Oregon eciszek(a)uoregon.edu

Twitter tools

I'm probably too late to chime in on this discussion, but as a reporter I love topsy.com for hashtag tracking, etc. As long as the account is extant, not deleted, it can find even deleted tweets. G'day ! Erica asked: > I was wondering if anyone can suggest particular tools for aggregating and > analyzing Twitter content. Maybe I'm old-school on this, but I'm surprised no-one's mentioned yourTwapperkeeper yet - in my experience, very straightforward to set up (all you need is a standard LAMP server setup to run it on), and fine for most standard Twitter capture tasks (e.g. tracking hashtags, keywords, specific users, etc.). It's open source and available here: https://github.com/jobrieniii/yourTwapperKeeper We've made some modifications to more easily export datasets in CSV/TSV-format datasets - see details here: http://mappingonlinepublics.net/2012/01/09/twapperkeeper-and-beyond-a-remin… Personally, I don't trust most out-of-the-box Twitter analytics tools, and prefer to roll my own - for processing CSV/TSV datasets containing Twapperkeeper-format data, I've been using the scriptable command-line tool Gawk with great success. A collection of Gawk scripts for standard Twapperkeeper data processing tasks is available under a Creative Commons licence here: http://mappingonlinepublics.net/2011/06/22/gawk-scripts-for-processing-twit… Additionally, my 'Swiss army knife' Gawk script for extracting activity metrics from a Twapperkeeper dataset is here: http://mappingonlinepublics.net/2012/01/31/more-twitter-metrics-metrify-rev… The question of developing standard, case-independent metrics for the description of Twitter activity patterns is something Stefan Stieglitz and I are taking up in two forthcoming papers (happy to share drafts - email me off-list). The keynote which Jean Burgess and I presented at the recent Conference on Science and the Internet foreshadows some of this discussion, though: Axel Bruns and Jean Burgess. "Notes towards the Scientific Study of Public Communication on Twitter." Keynote presented at the Conference on Science and the Internet, Düsseldorf, 4 Aug. 2012. http://snurb.info/files/2012/Notes%20towards%20the%20Scientific%20Study%20o… - and the slides and video of the presentation are here: http://snurb.info/node/1678 Detailed notes on how we use these scripts to process Twitter data, and additional processing tools, are also on our Website - see http://mappingonlinepublics.net/category/twitter/ for more. For network visualisation, I recommend the open source software Gephi. My article in Information, Communication & Society describes how I've used yourTwapperkeeper, Gawk and Gephi to create dynamic visualisations of Twitter conversation networks: Axel Bruns. "How Long Is a Tweet? Mapping Dynamic Conversation Networks on Twitter Using Gawk and Gephi." Information, Communication & Society, 17 Nov. 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/1369118X.2011.635214 For more sophisticated, 'big data' research (i.e. upwards of a few million tweets per dataset), the yourTwapperkeeper approach is less useful (the LAMP framework just isn't built for big data), and you'll probably need to build your own customised solution. Eugene Liang and I discuss the pros and cons of both approaches in a recent article in First Monday (while we frame this in a crisis communication context, the discussion applies well beyond this): Axel Bruns and Yuxian Eugene Liang. "Tools and Methods for Capturing Twitter Data during Natural Disasters." First Monday 17.4 (2012). http://firstmonday.org/htbin/cgiwrap/bin/ojs/index.php/fm/article/viewArtic… Hope that helps. <insert obligatory plug for the "Digital data - lost, found, and made" panel at the upcoming AoIR conference, where I'm sure we can discuss the question of Twitter research methods some more as well> -- Dr Axel Bruns http://snurb.info/ - http://produsage.org/ ARC Centre for Creative Industries and Innovation http://cci.edu.au/ Associate Professor, Media & Communication a.bruns(a)qut.edu.au Creative Industries Faculty, Z1-515, CIP Twitter: @snurb_dot_info Queensland University of Technology +61 7 31385548 Musk Ave, Kelvin Grove, Qld. 4059, Australia CRICOS No.: 00213J

Out now! Rasa Smite, Creative Networks -- In the Rearview Mirror of Eastern European History
by Geert Lovink 28 Sep '12

28 Sep '12

The Amsterdam Institute of Network Cultures presents: Theory on Demand #11 Rasa Smite, Creative Networks, In the Rearview Mirror of Eastern European History This study explores the dawn of internet culture from an Eastern European perspective. Starting with a theoretical angle several networks are introduced and interpreted as complex socio-technical systems. The author analyzes the development of self-organized formations that started off as 'virtual communities', 'creative networks' that emerged from the early days of internet culture during the roaring mid 1990s until today's social media. Along with translocal case studies of Nettime, Syndicate, Faces and Xchange, as well as other important facets of early network culture in Europe, the study looks into the local E-Lab initiative in Riga, Latvia. Describing the pioneering network culture of 1990s, this study reflects on the larger changes in the social structure of today's society, 15 years later, that occur as follow-ups of these earlier socio-technical transformations. Rasa Smite is an artist, network researcher and cultural inventor, working with emerging media since the mid-1990s. She holds a PhD in sociology from the Riga Stradins University and currently is Associate Professor and Researcher in the Art Research Lab at Liepaja University. Rasa Smite is founding director of the Center for New Media Culture RIXC in Riga (www.rixc.lv) and founder of Internet culture and networked art projects such as Xchange, Acoustic Space Lab and more recently the Renewable Network. Together with her centre she organizes the annual festival Art+Communication (since 1996), curates networked art exhibitions and publishes Acoustic Space journal series, introducing novel themes such as internet radio (1997), locative media (2003), electromagnetic waves as material and medium in art (2006), art and renewable energy (2009), techno-ecologies (2009) and the art of resilience (2012).
