CFP - Experiments in (and out of) the studio: Art and Design Methods for Science and Technology Studies
by Laura Forlano 28 Sep '12

28 Sep '12

Experiments in (and out of) the studio: Art and Design Methods for Science and Technology Studies One day workshop, Tuesday October 16th, 2012 10:30AM-5:30PM, Copenhagen Business School, Copenhagen The organizers invite participation in an interdisciplinary one-day hands-on workshop on emerging methods of critical practice in science and technology studies, in particular methods that engage with art and design as well as performance and exhibition. Ultimately, we aim to refine our understanding and also intervene in the way that objects can stimulate and embody critique in STS. The workshop comprises three parts: (1) A morning of talks and participant discussion in the creation and interpretation of digital and material artifacts will operate as a means of exploring how techno-scientific knowledge is produced and how the social significance of that knowledge is refracted through material things. (2) A midday ethnographic exploration of the city of Copenhagen will focus on documenting urban technology through notes, photography, video and sketches to feed into the final session. (3) In the afternoon, we invite participants to build 'machines of enquiry' to materialise and experiment with the ethnographic material as a way of prototyping research insights. If you are interested in participating, please send a brief (3-5 sentences) expression of interest and a short 250-word bio or CV to Dehlia Hannah dh2058(a)columbia.edu by October 8th at 5pm EST. Please put ‘Pre-EASST Workshop’ in the subject heading. We will notify all participants about the status of their application shortly afterwards. Co-organizers: Laura Forlano, Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology Dehlia Hannah, Philosophy Department, Columbia University Kat Jungnickel, Sociology Department, Goldsmiths, University of London Julien McHardy, Sociology Department, Lancaster University Hannah Star Rogers, Science and Technology Studies, University of Virginia This event has been jointly supported by INCITE, Goldsmiths (University of London) and Microsoft Research Cambridge.

Seeking participants for Hackerspaces panel, ICA 2013
by Kevin Driscoll 26 Sep '12

26 Sep '12

Hello everyone, A group of young scholars is seeking a small number of participants for a panel on hackerspaces for the 2013 International Communication Association (ICA) convention in London. Hackerspaces are here thought to be a vital touchstone for informal education, shared rituals, resistant media practices, and various amateur pre-histories. An interdisciplinary perspective on hackerspaces, rather than hacker culture in general, will help to bridge the many disciplinary perspectives already at play in this field by grounding the discussion in terms of specific people, places, and events. Possible topics include: * Hacker motivation for technological appropriation and tinkering * Spaces and social environments for creative and technical making * Trans-national hobbyist networks * Gender, race and ethnicity in hacker culture * Hackers in popular culture * Hacker literacies For more information, please contact Andrew Schrock at aschrock(a)usc.edu. -- Kevin Driscoll PhD candidate Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism University of Southern California

New book on digital labour
by Christian Fuchs 26 Sep '12

26 Sep '12

Digital Labor: The Internet as Playground and Factory Edited by Trebor Scholz Digital Labor asks whether life on the internet is mostly work, or play. We tweet, we tag photos, we link, we review books, we comment on blogs, we remix media, and we upload video to create much of the content that makes up the web. And large corporations profit on our online activity by tracking our interests, affiliations, and habits—and then collecting and selling the data. What is the nature of this interactive ‘labor’ and the new forms of digital sociality that it brings into being? The international, interdisciplinary contributors to Digital Labor suggest that there is no longer a clear divide between ‘the personal’ and ‘work,’ as every aspect of life drives the digital economy: sexual desire, boredom, friendship—and all become fodder for speculative profit. They argue that we are living in a total labor society and the way in which we are commoditized, racialized, and engendered is profoundly and disturbingly normalized by the dominant discourse of digital culture. Digital Labor poses a series of questions about our digital present: How is the global crisis of capitalism linked to the hidden labor of the digital economy? How do we address that most online interaction, whether work or play, for profit or not, is taking place on corporate platforms? How can we acknowledge moments of exploitation while not eradicating optimism, inspiration, and the many instances of individual financial and political empowerment? In response to these questions, this collection offers new definitions of digital labor that address and challenge the complex, hybrid realities of the digital economy. Introduction: Trebor Scholz Why Does Digital Labor Matter Now? I. The Shifting Sites of Labor Markets 1. Andrew Ross On the Digital Labor Question 2. Tiziana Terranova Free Labor 3. PhD-seminar_Digital Humanities and the Study of the Web and Web Archives
by Niels Brügger 26 Sep '12

26 Sep '12

***REMINDER*** Digital Humanities and the Study of the Web and Web Archives PhD-seminar organised by the Digital Humanities Lab/NetLab (Niels Ole Finnemann and Niels Brügger), Vejle, Denmark, 3-5 December 2012 Today the Internet is the medium which holds the most multifaceted set of materials documenting contemporary social, cultural, and political life. It has become the fulcrum for the general development of media, including mass media and a growing variety of digital devices. If the communicative infrastructure of society in the late 20th century was centered on television, it is today centered on the Internet. As a variety of digital media penetrates all spheres in society, they also play a still more dominant role for the social sciences, humanities and arts. They do so in three respects: as archives for contemporary life, as a toolbox for the study of all sorts of digital collections, including digitized collections of non-digital materials (often labeled cultural heritage), and as a means for enforced communication within all spheres of society. In this course we will concentrate on the first of these aspects, the role of the Internet and particularly on online and archived web materials for scholars studying contemporary political, social, and cultural phenomena.
