Hi all, Important news, hope this goes further. Gene ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Cable Green <cable(a)creativecommons.org> Date: Thu, Sep 13, 2012 at 2:31 PM Subject: [OERU] Scientists, Foundations, Libraries, Universities, and Advocates Unite and Issue New Recommendations to Make Research Freely Available to All Online To: OER Forum <oer-forum(a)lists.esn.org.za>, OER-DISCUSS(a)jiscmail.ac.uk, oer-university(a)googlegroups.com, Educause Openness Constituent Group < OPENNESS(a)listserv.educause.edu>, "Open: WikiEducator" < wikieducator(a)googlegroups.com> [Forwarding from the Open Society Foundations and SPARC.] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 12, 2012 CONTACT: Andrea Higginbotham, SPARC, andrea(a)arl.org; 202-296-2296 Amy Weil, Open Society Foundations, aweil(a)sorosny.org; 212-548-0381 Scientists, Foundations, Libraries, Universities, and Advocates Unite and Issue New Recommendations to Make Research Freely Available to All Online WASHINGTON -- In response to the growing demand to make research free and available to anyone with a computer and an internet connection, a diverse coalition today issued new guidelines ( http://www.soros.org/openaccess/boai-10-recommendations) that could usher in huge advances in the sciences, medicine, and health. The recommendations were developed by leaders of the Open Access movement ( http://www.soros.org/openaccess/participants) which has worked for the past decade to provide the public with unrestricted, free access to scholarly research—much of which is publicly funded. Making the research publicly available to everyone—free of charge and without most copyright and licensing restrictions—will accelerate scientific research efforts and allow authors to reach a larger number of readers. “The reasons to remove restrictions as far as possible are to share knowledge and accelerate research. Knowledge has always been a public good in a theoretical sense. Open Access makes it a public good in practice,” said professor Peter Suber, director of the Open Access Project at Harvard University and a senior researcher at SPARC (The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition). The Open Access recommendations include the development of Open Access policies in institutions of higher education and in funding agencies, the open licensing of scholarly works, the development of infrastructure such as Open Access repositories and creating standards of professional conduct for Open Access publishing. The recommendations also establish a new goal of achieving Open Access as the default method for distributing new peer-reviewed research in every field and in every country within ten years’ time. “Science and scholarship are activities funded from the public purse because society believes they will lead to a better future in terms of our health, environment, and culture,” said Heather Joseph, executive director of SPARC. “Anything that maximises the efficacy and efficiency of research benefits every one of us. Open Access is a major tool in that quest. These new recommendations will underpin future developments in communicating the results of research over the next decade.” Today, Open Access is increasingly recognized as a right rather than an abstract ideal. The case for rapid implementation of Open Access continues to grow. Open Access benefits research and researchers; increases the return to taxpayers on their investment in research; and amplifies the social value of research, funding agencies, and research institutions. The Open Access recommendations are the result of a meeting hosted earlier this year by the Open Society Foundations, on the tenth anniversary of the landmark Budapest Open Access Initiative ( http://www.soros.org/openaccess/read) which first defined Open Access. “Foundations rarely have the good fortune to be actively present at the birth of a world-wide movement that fundamentally changes the rules of the game and provides immediate benefit to the world,” said István Rév, director of the Open Society Archives and a member of the Open Society Foundations Global Board. “This is what happened when the Open Society Foundations initiated a meeting at the end of 2001 that gave birth to the Open Access movement.” ### SPARC (Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition), with SPARC Europe and SPARC Japan, is an international alliance of more than 800 academic and research libraries working to create a more open system of scholarly communication. SPARC’s advocacy, educational, and publisher partnership programs encourage expanded dissemination of research. SPARC is on the Web at http://www.arl.org/sparc. The Open Society Foundations work to build vibrant and tolerant democracies whose governments are accountable to their citizens. Working with local communities in more than 100 countries, the Open Society Foundations support justice and human rights, freedom of expression, and access to public health and education. The Open Society Foundations is on the Web at http://www.soros.org. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "OER university" group. CfP: 3rd International Workshop on Model-driven Approaches for Simulation Engineering (Mod4Sim13) part of the Symposium on Theory of Modeling and Simulation SCS SpringSim 2013)
by Daniele Gianni 13 Sep '12

13 Sep '12

################################################################# CALL FOR PAPERS 3rd International Workshop on Model-driven Approaches for Simulation Engineering part of the Symposium on Theory of Modeling and Simulation (SCS SpringSim 2013) ################################################################# April 7-10, 2013, San Diego, CA (USA) http://www.sel.uniroma2.it/Mod4Sim13 ################################################################# # Papers Due: *** November 1, 2012 *** # Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings # and archived in the ACM Digital Library. ################################################################# The workshop aims to bring together experts in model-based, model-driven and software engineering with experts in simulation methods and simulation practitioners, with the objective to advance the state of the art in model-driven simulation engineering. Model-driven engineering approaches provide considerable advantages to software systems engineering activities through the provision of consistent and coherent models at different abstraction levels. As these models are in a machine readable form, model-driven engineering approaches can also support the exploitation of computing capabilities for model reuse, programming code generation, and model checking, for example. The definition of a simulation model, its software implementation and its execution platform form what is known as simulation engineering. As simulation systems are mainly based on software, these systems can similarly benefit from model-driven approaches to support automatic software generation, enhance software quality, and reduce costs, development effort and time-to-market. Similarly to systems and software engineering, simulation engineering can exploit the capabilities of model-driven approaches by increasing the abstraction level in simulation model specifications and by automating the derivation of simulator code. Further advantages can be gained by using modeling languages, such as UML and SysML – but not exclusively those. For example, modeling languages can be used for descriptive modeling (to describe the system to be simulated), for analytical modeling (to specify analytically the simulation of the same system), and for implementation modeling (to define the respective simulator). A partial list of topics of interest includes: * model-driven simulation engineering processes * requirements modeling for simulation * domain specific languages for modeling and simulation * model transformations for simulation model building * model transformations for simulation model implementation * model-driven engineering of distributed simulation systems * relationship between metamodeling standards (e.g., MOF, Ecore) and distributed simulation standards (e.g., HLA, DIS) * metamodels for simulation reuse and interoperability * model-driven technologies for different simulation paradigms (discrete event simulation, multi-agent simulation, sketch-based * simulation, etc.) * model-driven methods and tools for performance engineering of simulation systems * simulation tools for model-driven software performance engineering * model-driven technologies for simulation verification and validation * model-driven technologies for data collection and analysis * model-driven technologies for simulation visualization * Executable UML * Executable Architectures * SysML / Modelica integration * Simulation Model Portability and reuse * model-based systems verification and validation * simulation for model-based systems engineering To stimulate creativity, however, the workshop maintains a wider scope and welcomes contributions offering original perspectives on model-driven engineering of simulation systems. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ On-Line Submissions and Publication +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ We invite paper submissions in three forms: 1. On behalf of Jaana Nyfjord. All the best, Sari -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [Sesweden] Call for Papers - Software Technology Exchange Workshop 2012 Date: Tue, 11 Sep 2012 21:15:14 +0200 From: Jaana Nyfjord <jaana(a)swedsoft.se> Swedsoft and its members invite you submit papers to the Second International Software Technology Exchange Workshop (STEW). Swedsoft is a cross domain initiative to strengthen software engineering in Swedish industry and Academia through cooperation and research. The workshop will take place on November 28 2012 in Kista, Sweden. STEW - General Information ======================== Transfer of results of academic research into real products or integrating them into industrial ways-of-working is one of the key challenges for both academic institutions and companies in many domains. Computing systemsand software related research are not exceptions here. Many companies today are often unaware of the existing research and many academic institutions have difficulties to disseminate their results within the industry. To remedy this, the Second International Software Technology Exchange Workshop (STEW) has been organized by Swedsoft to facilitate knowledge exchange and dissemination ofacademic results within the industry. STEW provides a forum forresearchers who can gain access to the interested industry representatives, and for the industry representatives who havethe interest and opportunity to utilize the outcome of the research into realproducts or software product development. The workshop also strives topromote networking among academia and industry attendees. Areas of Interest =============== We seek submissions from researchers working in any field related to software technologies and software development methodologies. The only requirement is that the research results published should havereached a level where industrial adoption becomes possible. The main fields ofinterest include, but are not limited to ·Emerging or established software technologies such as many-core programming,real-time systems, cloud computing, novel programming paradigms, languages or tools ·Software development techniques, especially in the context of complex systems, large scale development and geographically distributed organizations, such as model based development, agile and post-agile waysof working, feature centric development ·Software governance models, methods, studies and proposals Submissions shall be in standard, 2-column ACM format, no longer than 3 pages. While quantitative results are welcome, we are mostly interested in the novelty aspect of the research as well as its relevance for the industry and immediacy of putting it into practice in an industrial setting. Both unpublished as well asrecently published papers are welcome. STEW does not have any copyright requirements. Hence, publishing at STEW should not prevent the researchers from publishing the results at other scientific conferences. All accepted submissions will be published through Swedsoft'swebpage, www.swedsoft.se <http://www.swedsoft.se/>. By submitting, authors automatically givepermission for publication on the Swedsoft page. The Program Committee will consist of industrial and academic representatives. The Program Committee will give priority to papers that can clearlyarticulate both the results of the research as well as the concrete areas ofapplicability. At least one author of each accepted paper will be required to attendthe workshop and present the paper in a 20 minutes session. We encourage you toprepare a demo of your technology, if applicable.
