Research into Online Youth Activism

Hi there I am currently conducting a piece of research into Online Youth Activism as part of an MA in European Youth Work at the University of Bedfordshire. I am looking for help contacting 16-25 year olds who are interested in in the subject to join a research forum. Dear Thomas, I'm finta call a spade a spade, and point out that your above statement is emblematic of White male privilege. I can assure you - as can many of the female/queer/minority members of this list - that indeed professors DO "discourage pursuit of a volatile subject". This is especially true, but not limited to, of any research project that attempts to avoid deficit-based portrayals of non-whites/"other" and ICT usage. The innate conservatism of the academy stifles not only critical cultural projects, but also the recruitment and retention of minority faculty and students. Please argue this with me...i'm begging you. Moving on... I don't know you..and based on your interactions with others here i'm not sure i want to. That being said, you're entitled to your opinions on academia and the list. What you are NOT entitled to are your statements demeaning the intelligence, training, or ethos of other list members. If you spoke to me like that in person, i'd call you on it - which is why i'm saying something here. While you may have received approval or your actions off-list, note that no-one has stepped forward to publicly defend your words. That should signal to you that your actions fall outside the pale of civility. Even if you don't intend to enter academia after completing your degree, I'm sure that your behavior would be deemed objectionable in either the corporate, non-profit, or governmental sectors. I find it ironic that your paragraph ends with "open mind". IMO (i ain't humble) an open mind requires you to accept that the beliefs/practices of others have equal validity to yours REGARDLESS of whether you believe otherwise. I have yet to see you demonstrate that in your behavior on this forum. In the words of the sage philosopher O'Shea Jackson, "check yourself before you wreck yourself". Deadline Extended till Sept 15, 2012: Special Issue: Culture, Technology and Globalization in the Information Age Issue Editor: Shaheed Nick Mohammed, Pennsylvania State University at Altoona Culture as lived experience and academic concept exists and evolves under the pressure of global trends in the modern information age. Outdated notions of culture as a set of parochial markers of identity lose their relevance in a world where identities are not only hybrid, but also fluid and (often deliberately) constructed from multiple competing influences. Technologies of the information age enable cultures to exist outside of the confines of geography, history and politics traditionally associated with cultural emergence and maintenance. These technologies foster transnational and diasporic communities, enabling traditional migrants to reconstruct the traditions of home wherever they may wander. At the same time, these technologies also enable non-traditional groups with members of diverse geographic and historic backgrounds to evolve into their own "cultures" that feature membership, participation, mythology and lore in evolving forms. The Electronic Journal of Communication (http://www.cios.org/www/ejcmain.htm) invites papers on the multiple intersections of Culture, Technology and Globalization in the Information Age for an upcoming special themed issue to be published in early 2013. Manuscripts may take a variety of empirical or theoretical perspectives; topics may include, but are not restricted to, the following areas: virtual diasporas, identity and technology, hybridity and group/identity construction, "culture" in the Information Age, ethnogenesis and imagined communities. Regardless of the specific topic, special emphasis should be placed on fundamental social changes that arise from the increasingly important role of information technologies in defining and transforming human culture. Manuscripts should target approximately 25 pages or 7000 words in length excluding notes and references and should adhere to APA (6th ed.) guidelines. The extended deadline for receipt of manuscripts is September 15, 2012. It looks like my autocorrect got the best of my email ha! I'm didn't mean to state they are highly intelligent in their social awkwardness. I intended to communicate that they (trolls) are often highly intelligent, and often challenged by social awkwardness. I was closely identified but not diagnosed with aspergers myself, but fortunately I "grew out of it" so to speak. There isn't an exact parallel between trolls and aspergers, that isnt really my point, but rather that they share similarities for analogous purposes. Research and the Internet

Dear Everyone, I know how supportive AOIR is to those new to teaching, hence this request for guidance. I have been asked to do a two hour lecture to Masters students in the social sciences (in October) along the rather broad topic of "Research and the Internet". Basically it is looking at how the Internet has changed not only what we research, but also how we research - so these are two overlapping areas which I will need to cover. Can anyone recommend a suitable book/s that might assist me with this. Certainly an overview of the range of research methodologies that have emerged - both quantitative and qualitative - are an essential part of this and cover a vast range of disciplines. But I also want to stimulate thinking about the burgeoning area of Internet studies. Perhaps two hours isn't enough! But I need to start somewhere - and I also need to remember this is just an "introduction".
